Clive Barker's non-Hellraiser franchise is brought back around to no longer focus on the plight of white women in this stunning, complex, and challenging reframing of the classic. There is a lot of stuff happening in Nia DaCosta's "Candyman."  The movie takes on a whole bunch of weighty ideas and attempts to explore them via the slasher film.  But it's just possible that by trying to fit into that subgenre, and need to not go over 90 minutes, that it loses too much along the way.

For episode 54 the boys are back in the studio to review an ahead of its time horror classic. Candyman (1992), and it's near 30 year separate sequel and Jordan Peele production, Nia DaCosta's Candyman (2021). Along the way we talk shop on how exceedingly rare quality horror sequels have been historically and beg the question, has there ever been a horror sequel to meet or exceed the quality of an original? Maybe Scream 2? Candyman (2021) walks a fine line and is often brilliant, funny and genuinely inspired. Is it as good as the original??? Peep the pod and our full review to find out. Crack open a couple of cold ones with us, leave your review for these films in the comments and let us know what you think we should review next.

Summer is coming to a close, but before we pack it in for the season we've got one last major thrill to end it on. Point Break is the ludicrous, amazing, exhilarating action spectacle which still defines the high point of Kathryn Bigelow's directorial career. It embodies the best of what we love about Keanu Reeves and is brimming with career-best performances from the likes of Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty, Gary Busey, and a number of others. The fusion of high-octane sports spectacle like surfing and sky diving melds beautifully with the adrenaline of heist movie action, brilliantly delivered by Bigelow's peerless eye in numerous unforgettable action sequences that still stand as some of the best of all time today. As autumn rears its head over the horizon we've got new films to cover as well, like the box office success of Nia DaCosta's Candyman before jumping back into the '90s to revisit the history of another important minority group in the movies with a review of The Celluloid Closet (1995). All of this and more from your independent resource on classic and contemporary cinema.

This week we start by discussing Lisa Joy's platitude-filled sci-fi noir REMINISCENCE (2:14), starring Hugh Jackman. One of us enjoyed it, one thought it was "meh," and one found it utterly insufferable. Next, we cover David Lowery's epic fantasy film THE GREEN KNIGHT (18:29), starring Dev Patel as Gawain from Arthurian legend. Overall, we dug this gorgeous film that both honors the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Next, we tackle Nia DaCosta's CANDYMAN (38:23), a sequel to the 1992 film, which features lots of visually stunning and unsettling moments, but two of us thought it didn't dig as deep into social commentary as it could have. And on this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the winner of our amusement park movie poll, Herk Harvey's 1962 horror film CARNIVAL OF SOULS.

Sam Clements is joined by actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the star of Nia DaCosta's Candyman, to talk about his work on the movie.  A spiritual sequel to the urban legend-turned-iconic horror tale, Nia DaCosta's Candyman sets its scene in the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down. Now a gentrified neighbourhood, artist Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) moves into a loft there, and a chance encounter with an old-timer exposes him to the true story behind the town's infamous Candyman. Eager to use these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for his paintings, Anthony unknowingly opens a door to a complex and terrifying past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a horrifying wave of violence. Dare you say his name?
