It's perfectly natural for people to take things for granted from time to time. But when you're raising a child who is completely blind, today's guest will tell you that you definitely gain a new perspective and truly see the beauty in everything. Joining me for this inspiring conversation is Nicole Carr. Nicole is a nurse and a beautiful mom to 3 kiddos, Nora, Aubrey, and Mac. Now that she has seen the challenges firsthand, she is driven to change the world on what is possible for the visually impaired. When Mac was born, both of his lungs collapsed, and he was rushed to the NICU. A few weeks later, Nicole and her husband, Chris, noticed that something wasn't right. His eye movements seemed off, and he would often be startled when they picked him up. Soon afterward, Mac was diagnosed with optic nerve hypoplasia. The diagnosis was anything but definitive, and the Carr family literally had to wait and see what type of vision problems their son would have. She shares many wonderful and empowering messages about how we are only limited by the assumptions and blind spots that we create for ourselves and others. Nicole and her husband have created an amazing nonprofit called Blind Spot, which helps other families with visually impaired kids with the support they need to dream big and set their sights on accomplishing their goals. She is such a lovely human being and I'm so grateful to be able to share her journey with you. Key Takeaways with Nicole Carr How Nicole's instincts kicked in during her pregnancy that something wasn't right, even though the tests were always clear. That 85% of what a child learns by the age of 5 is with their vision. 75% of the population that is blind is unemployed, and roughly 10% get a college degree. Even as a nurse, it's difficult to understand what the loss of normal life is for a family unless you go through it yourself. We're all human beings with stuff going on at home, and we need to understand that and help each other, especially in the workplace. If we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, the people around us are more likely to reciprocate. How people tend to make assumptions or put limitations on ourselves and others to rationalize why something can't be done, when it absolutely can be done. The amazing things that the Blind Spot nonprofit is doing to help other families educate those with disabilities. Show Notes: Get Full Access to the Show Notes by visiting: MatteasJoy.org/25. RALEIGH, N.C. (August 3, 2020) – For the third installment of Your Point of Pride – The Podcast, Dr. Nicole Pride has called upon an Atlanta-based, Emmy Award-winning namesake, Nicole Carr, to discuss passion. Carr is currently an investigative journalist with Channel 2 Action News, the local ABC affiliate. Since joining WSB-TV, Carr has interviewed an alleged NSA leaker, uncovered faulty data from the Georgia Department of Health in relation to COVID-19 testing, and has been involved with investigations into alleged misconduct and corruption by a Georgia district attorney. “In a time when hard-nosed, truth-seeking journalism is going unappreciated, I found my conversation with Nicole to be a much-needed breath of fresh air,” Pride said. “She is one of those rare people who has managed to follow a career path that allowed her to pursue her true passion." In their 40-minute conversation, Carr and Pride discussed meeting the challenges associated with the pursuit of passion, self-motivation, and becoming the best version of themselves. “I don’t think that we can properly assess or put anything in life in context until we are honest with ourselves about what we’re dealing with,” Carr said in the conversation. “I try to understand that truth can come in many different forms. It’s not debatable, but it is complex and many things can be true at the same time.” While Carr has been in Atlanta for more than two years, she has North Carolina ties – first as an Army Brat living with her family in Fayetteville when her father was stationed at Fort Bragg, later as a proud graduate of Winston-Salem State University, and most recently as a former reporter in the Piedmont Triad and Raleigh-Durham television markets. Carr has also worked in Nashville, is a past fellow for the International Center for Journalists, and holds a master’s degree from Syracuse University. Story- and truth-telling might be Carr’s job, but she finds her most important work to be at home as a wife and mother to her three children.
We're talking to Nicole Carr, professor at Texas A&M University who talks about what it's like being a mom working from home, a college professor who is in touch with her students' personal and academic needs, and also what it's like to be an average person balancing the changes and uncertainties ahead. Listen for the candid conversations we shared about our own journey as parents of school-aged children, and the implications of the current social changes in their lives as they hibernate from their community of friends. Nicole Carr is the CFO of Measurabl, a software platform that enables owners and operators of real estate to measure, manage, and report non-financial ESG data, such as energy, water, and waste consumption data. Nicole grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a known beer city. She went on to attend University of Colorado Boulder, studying accounting and playing volleyball for the Buffaloes. After spending four years in Boulder, Nicole moved to Denver to begin her career working for KPMG, one of the “big four” accounting firms. A few years passed and Nicole felt burnt out in her public accounting role, so she began working for one of her best clients, Realty Income, a San Diego public company. There, she spent about six years with that company, working in financial roles. During her time at Realty Income, Nicole became more familiar with ESG (Environmental Social Governance) and realized she wanted to make it a bigger part of her career. She stumbled upon Measurabl while flipping through a long list of San Diego companies and it happened to be the only business she dogeared, so she knew she had to get in touch with the team. A year later, Nicole is leading the company’s financial division. Listen to the rest of her story. Thanks to our partners Cox Business for their support in enabling us to grow the San Diego ecosystem.
