All Eyes on Justin Farmer: Veteran WSB-TV News Anchor Launches a Second Act in Public

Second Act Stories

Justin Farmer is one of the most recognizable people in Atlanta. He spent 17 years as the evening news anchor on WSB-TV, Atlanta's top-rated news station, and one of the biggest local market news stations in the country. News was a Farmer family business; Justin's father, Don Farmer, was an ABC news correspondent, a founding CNN anchor, and later the evening news anchor on WSB in Atlanta, a job he held until 1997. Ten years later, Justin landed the same job, at the same station. But let's rewind: this all meant that Justin grew up with an inside track to history. While he graduated from Boston College with a degree in political science, his family legacy and several internships at WSB naturally led him to broadcasting. His first TV job was as a sportscaster in Albany, Georgia. But a life in TV news is nomadic, and Justin moved from market to market before eventually landing back home in Atlanta and working for WSB. In 2007, he finally landed at the anchor desk. Everything was going well until the early 2020s, when in the span of 14 months, Justin lost both his biological parents and his beloved WSB co-anchor, Jovita Moore. This series of traumatic losses caused him to rethink what he wanted from life. He challenged himself to do something different, and his passion for investing and wealth management emerged as his new career goal. It wasn't an easy path. Studying for the Series 65 - Uniform Investment Adviser Law Exam, is a full-time job itself, but Justin climbed that mountain around his very high-profile full-time job. He passed the first time he took it. Then, on November 26, 2024, he signed off from WSB-TV with three hilarious words and launched Exit Wealth, a private investment firm that works with ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Our interview with Justin happened just weeks after he embarked on his second act. In this episode, Justin shares his history in TV news, some of the fun stories that are always part of live TV, his painful turning point, the thought process behind leaving what appears to be a “cushy” job, and the mountains he had to scale to make his second act a reality. Learn more about Justin by Googling his name and learn more about Exit Wealth by visiting their website. Second Act Stories theme music: "Between 1 and 3 am" by Echoes

GA's 'bait-and-switch' school voucher scheme & another call for a party reboot

Friend of the show Jay Bookman penned a piece chonicling how unpopular taxpayer funded private school vouchers are with conservatives and liberals - red and blue states. He also deftly explained what's happening in Georgia as a program set to aid maybe 6% of the state's student population attend a private school - with 1% of its education budget - suddenly appears to be available to nearly 20% of the state's students - at a much higher taxpayer cost - due to an interpretation by an unelected board tasked with managing the voucher program. Also, the disparate storytelling from Fox-owned WAGA-TV and Cox Media's WSB-TV. My goodness. Leigh McGowan, aka "Politics Girl" called for a Democratic Party "reboot" in one of her latest social media "rants" (her word; not mine) and I'm in near-total agreement with everything she said. Also, is Senator Chris Murphy prepping for a Presidential run? Sure seems like it. He ripped Georgia Rep. Barry Loudermilk's interim January 6th report recommending a criminal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney and has honed his anti-Trump/Musk messaging effectively, too. Just putting a pin in this for 2028.

Chase Oliver is a 38-year-old Libertarian activist living in Atlanta. Dubbed “…the most influential Libertarian in America…” by Rolling Stone, Oliver is a champion of the rights of the individual against the growing power of the state. Oliver began his political activism opposing the War in Iraq under then-President George W. Bush, and he discovered the Libertarian Party when he stopped by a booth at the Atlanta Pride Festival in 2010. In 2020, he ran for Congress in Georgia's 5th district to complete the term of the late civil rights icon John Lewis. In 2022, he ran for U.S. Senate, debating incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker's empty podium. Oliver was widely credited with causing the runoff election between Warnock and Walker. Riding the success of his senate campaign, Oliver announced his intent to run for the Libertarian Presidential nomination. Since then, he has participated in the Free and Equal Debate which included candidates outside of the Republicans and Democrats, topped the vote in four Libertarian primaries, including Oklahoma's very first Libertarian primary, won the Presidential Straw Poll with about 43 percent of the vote at the Libertarian Party of Iowa's first Caucus and became the first third-party presidential candidate invited to speak at the Iowa Political Soapbox at the State Fair. Chase Oliver has appeared on PBS, CNN, Fox Business, CSPAN, WSB TV and Radio, Fox News, 11 Alive News, Forbes, USA Today, Vice Media, Reason TV , and more. He has been featured in The New Y ork Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Guardian, and Rolling Stone.

Claud "Tex" McIver is convicted in the shooting death of his wife, Diane. That conviction has been reversed and now, the once-prominent Atlanta attorney takes a plea deal that will pave his way to a release. Georgia's highest court ruled that the jury should have been able to consider a misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter charge. McIver has now pleaded guilty to lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter, conduct, and possession of a gun during the commission of a crime. He will receive credit for the time he's already spent in custody. Tex McIver is a prominent Atlanta Lawyer,  Vice Chair of the State Elections Board, and his wife, Diane, is a beautiful, incredibly successful business woman in her own right.    They are married 11 years, but on a September night, Tex McIver shoots his wife in the back, killing her.  Diane McIver is shot inside a Ford Expedition she is riding in with her husband and a close family friend. They are returning home from their ranch in Putnam County late on Sunday night. Diane is in the front passenger seat, Tex is in the back seat.   Dani Jo Carter is driving the SUV back from the Ranch to the Condo in Buckhead when the interstate traffic gets heavy and she takes an exit into Downtown Atlanta.  McIver tells the police it was a bad area and he asked his wife to hand him his gun. He said it was in the center console up front. Diane McIver hands Tex his gun. McIver says soon they were out of danger and he fell asleep. He wakes up when Dani Jo stops the car and somehow the gun fired.     As friends come to offer condolences on the passing of his wife, most expect to see Tex McIver upset, in shock that he accidentally shot his wife, the love of his life, and caused her death. Instead, they find a man who seems more concerned about money. Within two days of Diane's death, Tex is asking about his wife's Social Security benefits.  Then  Tex McIver seems to be investigating how to liquidate his late wife's assets. Tex McIver organizes many of his wife's possessions to sell at an auction as part of an estate sale. Tex McIver said he was liquidating things to settle his wife's estate.  McIver sold everything he could of his wife's clothing, jewelry, furs, hats, just about everything. The sale lasted several days. It was later revealed that Tex McIver owed his wife nearly $350,000 which she loaned him for a barn he built on the ranch for guests on their estate The Atlanta Police eventually came to the decision to charge Tex McIver with involuntary Manslaughter and reckless conduct in the shooting death of his wife. The charges seem to suggest that they believe Tex McIver's claim that the shooting was an accident. The day after a judge sends McIver to jail, McIver is indicted on a charge of malice murder along with six other charges including three counts of influencing a witness.  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Clint Rucker - Award- winning attorney, municipal court judge, and fmr.
