Welcome to B The Way Forward Interludes - a series of conversations that don't necessarily fit in our regular season, but are just too good to not share. Dr. Timinit Gebru is one of the leading voices in AI research calling for more responsible and inclusive AI systems. Or, as she puts it - “a technological future that serves our communities instead of one that is used for surveillance, warfare, and the centralization of power by Silicon Valley.” As the Founder and Executive Director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR), Timnit isn't just calling out the dangers of Big Tech's approach to AI - she and her colleagues are working to forge new approaches and new ways to imagine what our future can look like. In part 2 of our conversation, Timnit shares why the “Distributed” aspect of DAIR is so important, the kinds of projects they undertake that could never be done within the halls of Big Tech or Academia, and why the current method of designing LLM's flies in the face of core engineering principles. Plus, you all had a lot of questions about AI at our recent Responsible AI Forum by AnitaB.org - and Timnit has some answers for you. --- At AnitaB.org, our mission is to enable and equip women technologists with the tools, resources, and knowledge they need to thrive. Through innovative programs and initiatives, we empower women to chart new paths, better prepared to lead, advance, and achieve equitable compensation. Welcome to B The Way Forward Interludes - a series of conversations that don't necessarily fit in our regular season, but are just too good to not share. Heard something about AI Lately? Have those two letters shown up in just about every app you use - whether you want them to or not? Yeah. Same. These days, it seems like you can't go an hour without hearing that Artificial Intelligence is going to radically remake our world. But… is it? There's so much hype it can be hard to really know what people even mean when they say AI. It can't all be ChatGPT helping you with cover letters and AI-generated images of the Balenciaga Pope, can it? Dr. Timnit Gebru is one of the voices speaking loudly and honestly about AI outside of the Big Tech hype bubble. And she has the bonafides to back that up. Timnit holds a BA, Masters and a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Vision from Stanford. Plus, She co-led Google's Ethical AI research team… until, in 2020, she and her co-lead sounded the alarm about the potential harms of large language models in a paper they titled “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big.” That paper led to an abrupt end to her time at Google. But Timnit hasn't stopped working on how AI and Machine Learning can be developed in ways that serve all communities - most recently as the co-founder and Executive Director of DAIR. In part 1 of our 2-part conversation, we talk about what AI is and isn't, the difference between AI summers and AI winters, and why bigger isn't always better when it comes to language Models. For a special series of episodes dubbed Through to Thriving that will air throughout the year, Tech Policy Press fellow Anika Collier Navaroli is hosting discussions intended to help us imagine possible futures—for tech and tech policy, for democracy, and society—beyond the moment we are in.The third episode in the series features her conversation with Dr. Timnit Gebru, the founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. Last year, Dr. Gebru wrote an New York Times opinion that asked, “Who Is Tech Really For?” In the piece, she also asked, “what would an internet that served my elders look like?” This year, DAIR has continued to ask these questions by hosting an event and a blog called Possible Futures that imagines “what the world can look like when we design and deploy technology that centers the needs of our communities. In one of these pieces, Dr. Gebru, along with her colleagues Asmelash Teka Hadgu and Dr. Alex Hanna describe “An Internet for Our Elders.”

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 28, 2025 is: derelict DAIR-uh-likt adjective Derelict is a formal word that describes something that is no longer cared for or used by anyone. It can also describe someone who is negligent or who fails to do what needs to be done. // The kids made sure to stay away from the spooky derelict houses in the neighborhood on Halloween. // The officers were charged with being derelict in their duty. See the entry > Examples: "In a movie that spends most of its time confined to the disorienting guts of a derelict spaceship, tracking Kenneth's de-evolution from Kennedy wannabe to a used car salesman version of Colonel Kurtz is often the only moral compass we have to find our way towards a better tomorrow." — David Ehrlich, Indie Wire, 15 Feb. 2025 Did you know? The Latin verb relinquere, meaning "to leave behind," left English with a number of words, including derelict. Something derelict has been left behind, or at least appears that way. In another sense, someone who is derelict leaves behind or neglects their duties or obligations. Another descendant of relinquere is relinquish, meaning "to leave behind," "to give up," or "to release." Relic also ultimately comes from relinquere. Relics, in the original sense of the term, are things treasured for their association with a saint or martyr—that is, objects saints and martyrs left behind. Relinquere also gives English its name for the containers or shrines which hold relics, reliquary.

From Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg, billionaires with no education expertise keep using their big names and big dollars to hype LLMs for classrooms. Promising ‘comprehensive AI tutors', or just ‘educator-informed' tools to address understaffed classrooms, this hype is just another round of Silicon Valley pointing to real problems -- under-supported school systems -- but then directing attention and resources to their favorite toys. Former educator and DAIR research fellow Adrienne Williams joins to explain the problems this tech-solutionist redirection fails to solve, and the new ones it creates.Adrienne Williams started organizing in 2018 while working as a junior high teacher for a tech owned charter school. She expanded her organizing in 2020 after her work as an Amazon delivery driver, where many of the same issues she saw in charter schools were also in evidence. Adrienne is a Public Voices Fellow on Technology in the Public Interest with The OpEd Project in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, as well as a Research Fellow at both (DAIR) and Just Tech.References:Funding Helps Teachers Build AI ToolsSal Khan's 2023 Ted Talk: AI in the classroom can transform educationBill Gates: My trip to the frontier of AI educationBackground: Cory Booker Hates Public SchoolsBackground: Cory Booker's track record on educationBook: Access is Capture: How Edtech Reproduces Racial InequalityBook: Disruptive Fixation: School Reform and the Pitfalls of Techno-IdealismPreviously on MAIHT3K: Episode 26, Universities Anxiously Buy Into the Hype (feat. Hot enough for ya? The future of our planet could be determined by what American politicians put into the next FARM BILL, which currently gives MASSIVE subsidies to animal agriculture, to produce cheap meat and dairy. But, the meat and dairy industry is a HUGE contributor to climate change. Our government claims it's fighting climate change while subsidizing the very industry that's largely causing it. Will politicians vote to continue this dangerously unsustainable status quo for the next 5 years? Activists from Free From Harm continue to speak truth to power. At one so-called “listening session,” activists stood up to a pro-factory farming politician to deliver tough questions about the massive bailouts to animal agriculture, the spread of diseases like bird flu and how Big Ag Big Dollars have corrupted politics. Now, UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell speaks with those activists, including Free From Harm's Robert Grillo and activist Natalie Fulton, and brings you the latest.

This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
Today we're joined by Alex Hanna, the Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR). In our conversation with Alex, we discuss the topic of AI hype and the importance of tackling the issues and impacts it has on society. Alex highlights how the hype cycle started, concerning use cases, incentives driving people towards the rapid commercialization of AI tools, and the need for robust evaluation tools and frameworks to assess and mitigate the risks of these technologies. We also talked about DAIR and how they've crafted their research agenda. We discuss current research projects like DAIR Fellow Asmelash Teka Hadgu's research supporting machine translation and speech recognition tools for the low-resource Amharic and Tigrinya languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea, in partnership with his startup Lesan.AI. We also explore the “Do Data Sets Have Politics” paper, which focuses on coding various variables and conducting a qualitative analysis of computer vision data sets to uncover the inherent politics present in data sets and the challenges in data set creation. The complete show notes for this episode can be found at twimlai.com/go/649.
