A powerful new translation is bringing Luxembourg and Ukraine closer through literature. Iryna, a member of the LUkraine asbl, shared details about Das Karussell von Odessa, a moving poetry collection by German-language author Pit Hoerold which has now been translated into Ukrainian for the first time. The new translation will be presented at Luxembourg's LiteraTour festival in Bettembourg on 23rd April, the collection captures the emotional reality of the war in Ukraine through a series of poetic testimonies. Though Hoerold has never set foot in Ukraine, his ability to channel the voices of mothers, soldiers, and ordinary citizens living through conflict stunned readers. “He could feel more than politicians,” Iryna remarked. “It's like he became Ukrainian through his words.” The Ukrainian translation is being released just in time for a public presentation at the LiteraTour literary festival in Bettembourg on 23rd April. The project was made possible through collaboration with the the College of Alderman of the Commune Bettembourg and generous support from Hoerold himself, who donated the translation rights as a gesture of solidarity. The translation was handled by Yevgeniya Inozemtseva, a Ukrainian linguist from a family of translators and edited by Iryna herself. “It was hard not to cry while working on it,” she shared, highlighting how deeply the poems resonated. One piece even targets Vladimir Putin with biting satire written in multiple languages, which is a reflection of the book's multilingual and multicultural depth. Beyond Ukraine's pain, the collection also offers a look at Luxembourg's cultural context, drawing parallels with historic battles and reflecting on shared European history. “It's not just a Ukrainian story,” said Iryna, “it's a story of people, of humanity.”

There are about 250,000 Ukrainian parolees who have entered the United States as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the context of U.S. immigration law, an immigration parolee is an individual granted temporary permission to enter or remain in the United States but without establishing a path to permanent residency. Iryna Mazur, a U.S. immigration attorney and Honorary Consul of Ukraine to Philadelphia, discusses their current status under the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) federal programs. On January 27, 2025, the Trump administration placed all parole programs on hold, and also, Ukraine was never redesignated for another TPS period. It is expected that the Administration will make a final decision with regards to the future of the U4U program and relevant re-parole authorizations by the end of April 2025. https://fimlaw.com/meet-our-lawyers/ https://www.consularcorpsofphiladelphia.org/ukraine/

To historia ukraińskich kobiet, które po inwazji Rosji na Ukrainę znalazły schronienie w Polsce. Zabierały dzieci i najpotrzebniejsze rzeczy, jechały pociągami, autobusami, samochodami. Zostawiały pracę, biznes, ustabilizowane życie i rodziny. Wiele z nich musiało zacząć od zera, ucząc się języka i zmieniając zawody. Polacy przyjmowali uchodźców z otwartymi ramionami, ale każda pomoc kiedyś słabnie. Bohaterki reportażu to Alla, Ella, Iryna, Ludmiła i Tatiana.

Together with the Chytomo team, she organized the Ukrainian Chytomo Award for the Outstanding Achievements in Publishing. The publishing markets observer. In 2022, she co-founded the Ukrainian Club of Montreal. Iryna is a deputy director and a head of the analytical department of the Ukrainian Book Institute, guest teacher of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. Back in 2009, I was writing my university master's thesis. I used this as an opportunity to create something practical and impactful. And I knew that Oksana (Oksana Khmelyovska, Chytomo co-founder, editor-in-chief) shared this vision and was the ideal partner to help me bring it to life. Besides, we recognised that the key to our growth lay not only in analyzing the process, but in engaging directly with industry experts — publishers, managers, writers, and designers. How? Given our journalistic background, we decided to start Chytomo — an online magazine about publishing, literature, and design. For the past 14 years, we have been leading this project, and I am pleased to see that Chytomo has now become an influential platform for aspiring publishing professionals in Ukraine, a tool for fostering a culture of reading, and a media outlet that introduces Ukrainian publishing and literature to a global audience.” __ LINKS: https://chytomo.com/en/authors/iryna-baturevych-2/ https://culturalhub.org/publication_author/iryna-baturevych/ https://ukraineworld.org/en/podcasts/ep-325 https://publishingperspectives.com/tag/iryna-baturevych/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/iryna-baturevych-520a0b23/ ---------- PUBLICATIONS: Wettbewerb auf Spitzenniveau https://www.boersenblatt.net/news/wettbewerb-auf-spitzenniveau-327671 (DE) https://www.giornaledellalibreria.it/scritti-da/iryna-baturevych-1917.html (IT) https://life.pravda.com.ua/authors/656ef0f89a2df/ (UA) Interviews: UkraineWorld Ukrainian non-fiction books: what is available in English? – with Iryna Baturevych Publishing Perspectives: Ukraine's Iryna Baturevych: ‘Solidarity Is Our Superpower' La Press Un essor inattendu pour le marché du livre en Ukraine Le Devoir En Ukraine, poésie de guerre et livres bombardés ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. She's a board member of the Climate Action Network for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, has acted as an observer at COP and SB negotiations, and was awarded a green ticket for the UN Youth Climate Conference in 2019. Iryna and I met back in June of this year, during the UN Climate Meetings in Bonn, Germany, where I was delivering some climate communications training alongside folks from UNU-EHS and UNFCCC. Iryna was quick to question the relevance of some approaches for contexts where, for example, freedom of speech was limited. Following further discussion, Iryna invited me to attend n-ost's conference on climate journalism in Tbilisi, Georgia, to hear the experiences of those reporting on climate despite a range of challenges, including censorship, authoritarianism, and full-scale war.Amongst other things, Iryna and I discussed the lack of visibility the region has on the international stage, the surreality of being labeled an extremist, and the need to live in exile in order to talk about climate change.Additional links: Check out the Climate Action Network Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central AsiaFind out more about the n-ost network for cross-border journalismRead about and support Green Network

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky knows that if he has any hope of victory in the war in his country he needs his international friends to keep backing him. Although the size of that task was pretty clear this week, in both the United States and Europe, when he returned largely empty handed - for now, at least. Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, says he remains up for the fight and talked confidently about ultimate success. It is now approaching two years of war in Ukraine. Despite both leaders talking of victory, the fighting and losses continue and neither side has been making much progress on the battlefield. In this edition, we hear conversations among Ukrainians. They talk about the emotional impact of the fighting but also how they are able to have plans despite the war. Three residents of Kyiv share their experiences, including Iryna, on how the approach of a second Christmas at war has affected her wedding plans to her British fiance. “When first he proposed I said yeah, we're going to do it after the war, after we will win,” says Iryna. "But now it's so long already and I feel like I just paused my life. So we decided to get married next year.” Host James Reynolds also hears from a woman whose brother was captured in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol and brings together Ukrainians in the UK and Poland. Iryna Tsilyk is one of Ukraine's best known young documentary makers. She made her name following the lives of soldiers, female paramedics and families living on the frontline in East Ukraine after the region was taken over by Moscow-backed separatists. However after Russia's full-scale invasion brought the war to Iryna's home city of Kyiv, she decided she could no longer stay behind the camera. So, in her current project, The Red Zone, Iryna is turning the lens on herself and her family.Iryna's husband, Artem Chekh, is a well-known novelist and journalist. He volunteered to join the army and found himself in Bakhmut, scene of some of the bloodiest fighting. For five days Iryna did not know if he was alive or dead. She is focusing on the anguish she felt over this period and using a series of flashbacks to illustrate their past lives in peacetime.Iryna tells Lucy Ash that to give herself more artistic freedom she has decided on a radical new tool for her work: this film will be an animation. Making films in wartime is a challenge and animation is expensive but Iryna has foreign backers and is determined to tell her own story in her own way.
