Texas Democrats who skipped town to stop redistricting efforts are now facing arrest after House Speaker Dustin Burrows signed off on civil arrest warrants, citing a “dereliction of duty”. Many of the Democrats that fled the state went to Chicago where Illinois Governor JB Pritzker rolled out the red carpet for them. Now, other Democrat Governors, Gov. Gavin Newsom in California and Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York are now vowing to conduct their own redistricting votes to combat the possible gains by Republicans in Congress. FOX's Eben Brown speaks with Texas State Senator Mayes Middleton (R) who says his Democrat colleagues have let the State of Texas down, by not just avoiding the redistricting vote but by shutting down all legislative business, and they should face the consequences. Texas Democrats fled to Illinois to block a GOP redistricting vote, prompting the Texas House to issue civil arrest warrants. The move, largely symbolic, aims to restore quorum. Governor Abbott and Speaker Burrows support the action, intensifying a partisan battle over congressional maps and legislative power. There was no way out. The cell door was locked, the corridor quiet, and the warders had already done their rounds. A smuggled spoon pressed cold against the palm of my hand, a comb tucked into a loose floorboard, a stamp in my sock and a muffin hidden in the mess. None of it made sense yet, but I would figure it out. I had to. I was going to escape Spike Island, and when I did, my captors would shout: "He Fled!" by Mark K. It is meaningful and instructive that the Legal Defense Fund, which has championed racial justice at the voting booth, in education, housing and in the criminal justice system since its founding by Thurgood Marshall in 1940, is on the frontlines today, winning legal victories in a perilous moment for American democracy. LDF is defending the hard-won civil rights of Black Americans against racially imposed barriers, laid out in Project 2025 and implemented by President Trump and the 119th Congress. As LDF Associate Director-Counsel Todd Cox explains on this episode of Power Station, Congress has abdicated its responsibility as a check on the executive and the U.S. Department of Justice has rejected its mandate to enforce civil rights laws, leaving the LDF and its sister organizations to carry out the fight in the courts. LDF brings the expertise and infrastructure needed to litigate, advocate in state legislatures and on Capitol Hill, organize in impacted communities and educate the public and policymakers about what is at stake. Todd, a consummate civil rights litigator, looks to his grandparents, who fled autocracy and racial violence in the south, as his inspiration and guide. Hear him and share this powerful story.
For over a week now, we have been reporting stories about Canadians stranded in Israel since that country launched its pre-emptive attack on Iran on June 13. But slowly, and under the radar for security reasons, The CJN has been speaking to some of the first tourists who found ways to evacuate Israel–mostly without any help from the Canadian government. We couldn't report their stories until it was safe to do so. But now that many of the Canadians we interviewed last week are either home or well on their way, we can bring you some of their amazing stories–whether it was boarding that all-expenses paid, chartered luxury Israeli cruise ship for a party-filled voyage to Cyprus or taking an anxiety-filled secret bus trip through Israel to Jordan and then a flight to Cairo, and finally on to Europe, all while hiding their Jewishness and the fact they are gay. Leonard Temes is an architect and interior designer from Toronto who came to Israel for on a Pride mission with a Jewish Federations of North America group, but left clandestinely five days ago. He had the added fright of finding himself on the same plane as those extremist pro-Palestinian protesters who tried to participate on the global March on Gaza, but were kicked out of Egypt by local authorities. Meanwhile Philip Lerner, a Thornhill data scientist, came to Israel to volunteer with an Orthodox youth group connected to the AISH movement. Lerner was offered a berth on that Israeli cruise ship chartered by Birthright, via Ashdod to Cyprus. He's dubbed the overnight voyage “The Jew Cruise”. But Lerner says despite what social media videos you might have seen of the 1,500 Jewish young people dancing and partying on the pool deck, the overall journey was anything but smooth sailing. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner speaks with both Leonard Temes and Philip Lerner, about how they got out. East Texas looks peaceful—until you listen closely. For three generations, one family has battled entities that refuse to stay buried: a silver-eyed man stalking school hallways, a trench-coated burn victim staring through bedroom windows, and a playful phantom dog that leaps onto hotel beds at midnight. From ghost walks in Jefferson to K2 meters spiking beside wicker tables, each trip unearths fresh evidence that something dark followed them home long ago. On a warm summer's evening in 1921, Dr. Richard Brumfield loaded about a dozen sticks of dynamite into his snazzy red convertible and left Roseburg, headed for handyman Dennis Russell's tiny shack in the hills near Dillard. Dr. Brumfield had hired Russell to blast out some stumps from around a rural farm property he owned. At least, that's what he'd told Russell when he hired him. But, as it turned out, he was lying about that. What Brumfield really wanted to hire Russell for was to impersonate a corpse. His corpse.... As many as 100,000 enslaved people fled successfully from the horrors of bondage in the antebellum South, finding safe harbor along a network of passageways across North America via the Underground Railroad. Yet many escapes took place not by land but by sea. William Grimes escaped slavery in 1815 by stowing away in a cotton bale on a ship from Savannah to New York, enduring days without food or water before settling in Connecticut. Frederick Douglass disguised himself as a free black sailor, using borrowed papers to board a train and then a steamboat from Baltimore to New York, reaching freedom in less than 24 hours. Thomas Jones, a formerly enslaved man from North Carolina, escaped in 1849 by hiding on a ship bound for New York, relying on his maritime knowledge as a steward to evade detection and later reuniting with his family in the North. This was a secret world of stowaways and the vessels that carried them to freedom across the North and into Canada. It sprawled through the intricate riverways of the Carolinas to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay to Boston’s harbors. Today’s guest is Marcus Rediker, author of “Freedom Ship: The Uncharted History of Escaping Slavery by Sea.” We see the Atlantic waterfront as a place of conspiracy, mutiny, and liberation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If a story reveals something about its characters, it also reveals something about the storyteller. The story you're about to hear is no exception. But what could a story tell about the one who is telling it? You might ask. Well, what if, in this story, the storyteller was the Prince of them all? What if, thousands of years ago, he understood better than anyone what makes a story an invisible thread connecting humanity together? What if he told a tale you could still connect with today? His name was Ovid. You might have seen the famous photo of a U.S. helicopter incongruously perched atop the roof of a Saigon building, with people lined up on a sloping ladder, backlit by the sky, hoping to board. The image illustrates the final hours of the evacuation of U.S. citizens, South Vietnamese allies and others from what was then South Vietnam on the day its capital, Saigon, fell to the North Vietnamese army and its allies at the end of the Vietnam War. When so many were scrambling to leave, a few Americans chose to stay. Claudia Krich, a retired teacher who lives in Davis, was among them. Her journal of the experience is the basis of her new book, Those Who Stayed / A Vietnam Diary. She went to Vietnam in 1973 to work in a medical relief program. On today's Davisville she talks about why she stayed when Saigon surrendered, her experiences in Vietnam, and what she saw that day. She'll talk about her experience at the Davis library at 6 p.m. April 30, exactly 50 years after the end of the war.

Shocking New Kohberger Claim, Witness Recalls Seeing Him with “Vacuum-Type Object” As He Fled Newly revealed court documents have provided fresh insight into the night of the brutal home invasion attack that left four University of Idaho students dead, as Judge Steven Hippler denied a motion from accused killer Bryan Kohberger. The ruling rejected his defense's attempts to challenge key evidence and upheld the validity of the search warrants used in the case. A surviving housemate, one of two roommates who were not attacked, told police that she saw an intruder walk out the back door of the Moscow, Idaho, home. She described him as a tall, lean White male with "bushy eyebrows" and noted that he was carrying a "vacuum-type object" as he left after locking eyes with her. Although she admitted to police that her memory was “fuzzy and cloudy” and that “everything was kind of blurry,” her description of the suspect remained consistent across multiple interviews. She also recalled hearing a male voice inside the house say, "I'm here to help." His defense team had sought a Franks hearing, a rare legal proceeding where they could argue that law enforcement misrepresented or omitted critical information in the search warrant affidavits. They focused on the surviving housemate's credibility, claiming she was in a dreamlike state and that police unfairly paraphrased her statements. However, Judge Hippler ruled against them, stating that any issues with her account were “fodder” for cross-examination at trial but did not impact the probable cause that led to Kohberger's arrest. The court documents also revealed new details about the evidence seized from Kohberger's Pullman, Washington, apartment. Investigators collected a dust container from a Bissell PowerForce vacuum, which was found in a closet near the front door, along with a black glove and receipts. The contents of the vacuum remain undisclosed. Retired NYPD inspector Paul Mauro weighed in on the discovery, stating, "If he was exceptionally careful, and wore booties, etc., it could explain the lack of other forensics. Especially if it was a wet vac." Criminal profiler and psychoanalyst John Kelly echoed that sentiment, saying, “He was probably trying to clean up hair and fiber.” Kelly has previously suggested that the suspect may have used his criminology background to stage the crime scene and eliminate forensic evidence. Inside Kohberger's apartment, police also noted the absence of shower curtains and empty trash cans. However, they did recover bedding with blood stains and hair samples. His office was also searched, but no physical evidence was collected from there. Authorities allege that Kohberger meticulously planned the attack and may have researched other knife murders before the slayings. At the crime scene, a knife sheath was found under Madison Mogen's body, which contained DNA allegedly matching Kohberger. However, the murder weapon has never been recovered. Judge Hippler dismissed all of Kohberger's motions to suppress evidence, including an argument that law enforcement improperly withheld information about investigative genetic genealogy (IGG) techniques used to identify him. The judge ruled that such details would have only strengthened the probable cause for search warrants, not weakened it. With the judge's decision standing, Kohberger's trial remains set for August. If convicted, he faces the death penalty. #IdahoMurders #BryanKohberger #TrueCrime #UniversityOfIdaho #BreakingNews #CrimeScene #Justice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Born in 1781, Princess Juliane of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld grew up in a world convulsed by the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. And her life proved to be as tempestuous as the age she inhabited. Wed to Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich of Russia when she was just 14, her deeply unhappy marriage pushed Julie to make an audacious bid for freedom, in defiance of the social expectations placed on women of her social status. Now, her little-known story has been brought to life in a new book by historian Helen Rappaport, who speaks to Danny Bird about the unconventional life of Queen Victoria's trailblazing aunt.
