On a warm summer's evening in 1921, Dr. Richard Brumfield loaded about a dozen sticks of dynamite into his snazzy red convertible and left Roseburg, headed for handyman Dennis Russell's tiny shack in the hills near Dillard. Dr. Brumfield had hired Russell to blast out some stumps from around a rural farm property he owned. At least, that's what he'd told Russell when he hired him. But, as it turned out, he was lying about that. What Brumfield really wanted to hire Russell for was to impersonate a corpse. His corpse.... In this special on-the-ground episode of The Long Form Podcast, I travel to Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to speak with Manzi Willy Ngarambe, the newly appointed Vice Governor of North Kivu Province. Just 100 days into his leadership under the AFC/M23 administration, we discuss his unexpected rise to power, his childhood escape from conflict, and his vision to rebuild a region long defined by violence and displacement. We unpack the deep-rooted issues behind the decades-long war in eastern Congo, the marginalization of Kinyarwanda-speaking Congolese, and the prospects for returning refugees, lasting peace, and justice in the DRC. Can the AFC/M23 bring real stability to the region? Is being a Congolese Tutsi still a death sentence? This episode dives deep into history, identity, and the fragile hope of a new beginning for Central Africa.#DRCongo #NorthKivu #ManziWilly #M23 #CongoCrisis #TheLongFormPodcast #AfricanPolitics #RefugeeReturn #PeaceInAfrica #Goma #Rwanda #TutsiInCongo #CongoleseHistory #YouthAndPoliticsListen to the Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya podcast on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/rw/podcast/the-long-form-with-sanny-ntayombya/id1669879621Listen to the Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7HkkUi4bUyIeYktQhWOljcFollow Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya on Twitter: https://x.com/TheLongFormRwFollow Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thelongformrw/Follow Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@longformrwFollow Sanny Ntayombya on Twitter: https://x.com/SannyNtayombya About Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya:The Long Form with Sanny Ntayombya is a weekly podcast intent on keeping you up to date with current affairs in Rwanda. As many as 100,000 enslaved people fled successfully from the horrors of bondage in the antebellum South, finding safe harbor along a network of passageways across North America via the Underground Railroad. Yet many escapes took place not by land but by sea. William Grimes escaped slavery in 1815 by stowing away in a cotton bale on a ship from Savannah to New York, enduring days without food or water before settling in Connecticut. Frederick Douglass disguised himself as a free black sailor, using borrowed papers to board a train and then a steamboat from Baltimore to New York, reaching freedom in less than 24 hours. Thomas Jones, a formerly enslaved man from North Carolina, escaped in 1849 by hiding on a ship bound for New York, relying on his maritime knowledge as a steward to evade detection and later reuniting with his family in the North. This was a secret world of stowaways and the vessels that carried them to freedom across the North and into Canada. It sprawled through the intricate riverways of the Carolinas to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay to Boston’s harbors. Today’s guest is Marcus Rediker, author of “Freedom Ship: The Uncharted History of Escaping Slavery by Sea.” We see the Atlantic waterfront as a place of conspiracy, mutiny, and liberation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You might have seen the famous photo of a U.S. helicopter incongruously perched atop the roof of a Saigon building, with people lined up on a sloping ladder, backlit by the sky, hoping to board. The image illustrates the final hours of the evacuation of U.S. citizens, South Vietnamese allies and others from what was then South Vietnam on the day its capital, Saigon, fell to the North Vietnamese army and its allies at the end of the Vietnam War. When so many were scrambling to leave, a few Americans chose to stay. Claudia Krich, a retired teacher who lives in Davis, was among them. Her journal of the experience is the basis of her new book, Those Who Stayed / A Vietnam Diary. She went to Vietnam in 1973 to work in a medical relief program. On today's Davisville she talks about why she stayed when Saigon surrendered, her experiences in Vietnam, and what she saw that day. She'll talk about her experience at the Davis library at 6 p.m. April 30, exactly 50 years after the end of the war.

Shocking New Kohberger Claim, Witness Recalls Seeing Him with “Vacuum-Type Object” As He Fled Newly revealed court documents have provided fresh insight into the night of the brutal home invasion attack that left four University of Idaho students dead, as Judge Steven Hippler denied a motion from accused killer Bryan Kohberger. The ruling rejected his defense's attempts to challenge key evidence and upheld the validity of the search warrants used in the case. A surviving housemate, one of two roommates who were not attacked, told police that she saw an intruder walk out the back door of the Moscow, Idaho, home. She described him as a tall, lean White male with "bushy eyebrows" and noted that he was carrying a "vacuum-type object" as he left after locking eyes with her. Although she admitted to police that her memory was “fuzzy and cloudy” and that “everything was kind of blurry,” her description of the suspect remained consistent across multiple interviews. She also recalled hearing a male voice inside the house say, "I'm here to help." His defense team had sought a Franks hearing, a rare legal proceeding where they could argue that law enforcement misrepresented or omitted critical information in the search warrant affidavits. They focused on the surviving housemate's credibility, claiming she was in a dreamlike state and that police unfairly paraphrased her statements. However, Judge Hippler ruled against them, stating that any issues with her account were “fodder” for cross-examination at trial but did not impact the probable cause that led to Kohberger's arrest. The court documents also revealed new details about the evidence seized from Kohberger's Pullman, Washington, apartment. Investigators collected a dust container from a Bissell PowerForce vacuum, which was found in a closet near the front door, along with a black glove and receipts. The contents of the vacuum remain undisclosed. Retired NYPD inspector Paul Mauro weighed in on the discovery, stating, "If he was exceptionally careful, and wore booties, etc., it could explain the lack of other forensics. Especially if it was a wet vac." Criminal profiler and psychoanalyst John Kelly echoed that sentiment, saying, “He was probably trying to clean up hair and fiber.” Kelly has previously suggested that the suspect may have used his criminology background to stage the crime scene and eliminate forensic evidence. Inside Kohberger's apartment, police also noted the absence of shower curtains and empty trash cans. However, they did recover bedding with blood stains and hair samples. His office was also searched, but no physical evidence was collected from there. Authorities allege that Kohberger meticulously planned the attack and may have researched other knife murders before the slayings. At the crime scene, a knife sheath was found under Madison Mogen's body, which contained DNA allegedly matching Kohberger. However, the murder weapon has never been recovered. Judge Hippler dismissed all of Kohberger's motions to suppress evidence, including an argument that law enforcement improperly withheld information about investigative genetic genealogy (IGG) techniques used to identify him. The judge ruled that such details would have only strengthened the probable cause for search warrants, not weakened it. With the judge's decision standing, Kohberger's trial remains set for August. If convicted, he faces the death penalty. #IdahoMurders #BryanKohberger #TrueCrime #UniversityOfIdaho #BreakingNews #CrimeScene #Justice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Newly revealed court documents have provided fresh insight into the night of the brutal home invasion attack that left four University of Idaho students dead, as Judge Steven Hippler denied a motion from accused killer Bryan Kohberger. Born in 1781, Princess Juliane of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld grew up in a world convulsed by the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. And her life proved to be as tempestuous as the age she inhabited. Wed to Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich of Russia when she was just 14, her deeply unhappy marriage pushed Julie to make an audacious bid for freedom, in defiance of the social expectations placed on women of her social status. Now, her little-known story has been brought to life in a new book by historian Helen Rappaport, who speaks to Danny Bird about the unconventional life of Queen Victoria's trailblazing aunt. CEO killer suspect caught, Syrian president fled country for Russia, Trump: Liz Cheney should go to jail

It's Tuesday, December 10h, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Adam McManus Persecution of Christians up in Indonesia The General Assembly of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia has announced growth in the Christian faith in that country. The organization pointed to seven new Christian groups, each with at least 10,000 members added to the list. While the church has grown in Indonesia, the believers' very presence has led to persecution in the Muslim-majority nation where 87% are Muslim and about 10% Christian. According to Persecution.org, the SETARA Institute recorded 217 incidents where religious freedom was violated in 2023. That's up from 175 in 2022.   Also, in 2023, places of worship were disturbed 65 times in Indonesia. That was up from 16 incidents in 2017. For example, one local province banned a Christmas choir practice for a Catholic Church earlier this month — requiring permission from the government for this “religious activity.”  Syrian president fled country for Russia The Middle East is in more turmoil. After 13 years of civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country for Russia. Syria's government has been turned over to a rebel faction led by a former Al Qaeda fighter named Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. The new government will be headed by a party espousing hardline Sunni Islamist ideology. In excess of a half a million Syrians have lost their lives in the civil war, and millions have left the country. In God's providence, Iran's influence in the Middle East has diminished greatly, with the loss of an ally in Al-Assad and Israel's crushing of Hezbollah in Lebanon. For now, Iran and Russia are seen as losers, and Turkey and Israel are seen as winners in the ongoing saga.  China initiates naval drill off coast of Taiwan Communist China has initiated a third and more significant naval drill encompassing the coasts of Taiwan, reports CNN.   This comes after the U.S. approved $2 billion in more arms sales for Taiwan. China vowed “strong countermeasures” to the action, reports the South China Morning Post. Psalm 46 assures that it is God who “makes wars cease to the end of the Earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.” CEO killer suspect caught Police nabbed Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, while he was chowing down at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He's an anti-capitalist Ivy League grad who liked online quotes from the “Unabomber'' Ted Kaczynski — and seethed in a manifesto, “These parasites had it coming,” reports the New York Post. Officers found a black 3D-printed pistol and a black silencer in Mangione's backpack. He graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer and Information Science in 2020 The tech whiz, originally from Towson, Maryland, apparently hated the medical community because of how it treated his sick relative. The suspect also may have held a grudge because of his own interactions with the industry, noting an X-ray photo on his X account showing four pins in his spine. Trump on Meet the Press: Liz Cheney should go to jail On Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump was on NBC's Meet the Press, suggesting that jail time might be appropriate for former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming and others on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack who pursued prosecution for January 6th protestors back in 2021. He also alleged that the committee destroyed evidence after a year and a half of testimony.  Listen. TRUMP: “They deleted and destroyed a whole year and a half worth of testimony. I think those people committed a major crime.” KRISTEN WELKER: “Sir?” TRUMP: “and [former Congresswoman Liz] Cheney was behind it.” WELKER: “Well.” TRUMP: “and so was [Democrat Congressman] Bennie Thompson. And everybody on that committee. For what they did,” WELKER: “Yeah.” TRUMP: “Honestly, they should go to jail.” KRISTEN WELKER: “So, you think Liz Cheney should go to jail?” TRUMP: “For what they did.” WELKER: “Everyone on the committee, you said.” TRUMP: “I think everybody. Anybody that voted in favor …” WELKER: “Are you going to direct your FBI Director and your Attorney General to send them to jail?” TRUMP: “Not at all. I think that they'll have to look at that. But I'm not going to. I'm going to focus on ‘Drill, baby drill.'” WELKER: “When you say that it carries weight though. You've tapped these people to lead the Justice Department and FBI.” TRUMP: “They can do whatever they want.” WELKER: “Okay.” TRUMP: “Biden can give them a pardon if he wants to, and maybe he should.” But Trump said, the decision to prosecute Liz Cheney would be left to his Attorney General appointee. Trump eager to issue pardons to most January 6th protestors In related news and in that same interview. President-elect Trump is looking at issuing pardons on his first day in office for those caught up in the January 6th investigations. The Biden Justice Department has prosecuted 1,572 persons in the protest. Over 1,200 of these have pleaded guilty or have been proven guilty in trial.  321 defendants pleaded guilty to felonies and 675 have pleaded guilty to misdemeanors. Here's Kristen Welker with the question. WELKER: “You promised to pardon those who attacked the Capitol on January 6th. Are you still vowing to follow through with that promise?” TRUMP: “We're looking at it right now. Most likely, yeah.” WELKER: “Well, you know.” TRUMP:  “Those people have suffered long and hard. And there may be some exceptions to it. I have to look. You know, if somebody was radical, crazy. There might be some people from Antifa there.  I don't know. These people have suffered. Their lives have been destroyed.” The degree of violence occurring at the January 6th protest is under debate, however. FactCheck.org notes that no police officers died  — while one officer did suffer a stroke and five committed suicide days or months after the January 6th event.  In addition, 17 officers suffered injuries during the protests that resulted in loss of days at work.  By contrast, some 2,035 police officers were injured during the 2020 George Floyd riots. PoliceMag.com reports that “16,241 protesters and rioters were arrested. Nearly 17% of the arrests were for felonies and 7% of the total involved violence. Many of the cases were quickly dismissed.”  New York jury acquits Daniel Penny A New York jury has acquitted Daniel Penny of all charges Monday, reports NBC News. He was the marine charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide for allegedly killing a young man in a subway who was threatening to kill people on the subway, according to witnesses.   The victim, Jordan Neely, had an extensive criminal record of 42 arrests. Emotions are running high after the verdict. A New York Black Lives Matter leader, Hawk Newsome, called for vigilantes to kill others “who have attempted to oppress us.” Wherever this applies, let us remember what Jesus said: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”  (Matthew 5:44) Was there an alphabet in the days of Noah? And finally, could there have been an alphabet used for written human communications as far back as the days of Noah?   That's what researchers have discovered from an excavation in a tomb in northern Syria, located about 500 miles west of where the ark would have rested. Characters that appear to be a real alphabet were etched into clay cylinders dated to 2400 BC.  Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, December 10th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
