State Issue 1: Amending Citizen Initiative & Our State's Constitution

On Aug. 8, Ohioans will head to the polls for a special election on Issue 1. If approved, Issue 1 would make changing the state's constitution more difficult. Specifically, the ballot proposal would amend the state constitution, raising the threshold for future constitutional amendments and requiring a 60% supermajority of Ohio voters to pass, instead of the current 50% plus one vote. Additionally, getting on the ballot would require signatures from voters in all 88 counties, as opposed to the 44 county threshold currently in place.rnrnIn putting Issue 1 on the August ballot, Republican lawmakers have said they hope to make it more difficult to amend the constitution in the future, specifically citing efforts underway to put a constitutional amendment legalizing abortion on the November general election ballot. Other supporters of Issue 1-including the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Restaurant Association and the Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association-have cited an anticipated ballot issue to raise the minimum wage next year as the primary reason for their support.rnrnLocal opponents of the issue include Cleveland City Council, Greater Cleveland Congregations, and Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates. In a statement urging Ohioans to vote no on Issue 1, Cleveland City Council said the proposed amendment "would destroy citizen-driven ballot initiatives as we know them, upending Ohioans right to make decisions thereby making it more difficult to amend the state constitution."rnrnJoin us for a forum moderated by Rick Jackson, and hear from both advocates and opponents of State Issue 1.

It is never easy to work in the restaurant industry. Even before the pandemic, many restaurants were operating in the red, and several of them shuttered their doors permanently during the lockdowns. Now that restaurants have reopened to full capacity, they have a new set of hurdles to leap over. John Barker is the president and CEO of the Ohio Restaurant Association, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to discuss the struggles these restaurants have experienced. One side of the coin is the supply shortage, to the point where some menu items are being dropped temporarily or altogether. Barker says restaurants have had to cut costs in creative ways, even if that means having their menus be all-digital by scanning a QR code with one's smartphone. Another issue has been the labor shortage. Now that many establishments have raised their wages, that topic has not become the issue anymore. Barker says there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of jobs available, but they are not being taken.

You and I spent just under 21 billion dollars last year eating out. That’s the estimated sales figure for Ohio’s more than 22,000 eating and drinking establishments. We enjoyed meals at little diners at country crossroads and at Wendy’s, Bob Evans’ and other major chains and we supported more than half-a-million people in who Ohio work in the industry. Today, John Barker of the Ohio Restaurant Association, joins Ohio Farm Bureau’s Adam Sharp to talk all things restaurants, this week, on Town Hall Ohio.

Ep. 28 - Jamie Richardson: VP of Government and Shareholder Relations at White Castle Systems, Inc.

Today’s guest on the show is Jamie Richardson, the Vice President of Government and Shareholder relations at White Castle Systems, Inc., the Chairman of the Ohio Restaurant Association, and a family-owned business advocate. “It's 95 years ago that the epicenter of all cravings was launched, and we’re going better and bigger and having more fun than ever.” White Castle is celebrating its 95th birthday this year – and its 95th year as a family-owned business. Jamie is an advocate for family-owned businesses. He believes it is important for family-owned businesses to share their story with thought leaders and lawmakers, whether that's at the state level or the federal level, to ensure that lawmakers consider the impact that new policies might have on family-owned businesses. Jamie believes that family businesses are unique in a number of ways. “They are very distinctive… because a lot of the the businesses that are known for treating their team members well… tend to be family businesses.” Being family-owned gives them the freedom and flexibility to make good decisions for the long haul. Family-owned businesses are less likely to get caught up in what Jamie calls “the sudden tug” in an emergency. “We feel it gives us an anchor and we call it the base of all metaphysics here in Castle Land.” Jamie is also a great networker, which comes down to being a great friend. Jamie approaches community engagement and networking events as opportunities to make new friends, and that opens him up to connect and start helping them more easily. Jamie engages with local communities, professional communities and charitable communities because it opens him up to a more diverse network of friends from different industries, different backgrounds, different worldviews and different perspectives. When you start to listen to people and genuinely appreciate them, then networking can begin to unlock some doors. “The greatest part of networking is about friendships, and part of that friendship is being a good listener.” Since 2008, Jamie has seen bigger barriers to entry in the foodservice industry, and more restaurants are going out of business. These barriers are put in place by regulators at the local, state and federal level – often with good intentions – and it puts a strain on an industry that already operates with compressed margins. The impact of regulation is real. The struggle to remain profitable is only made more difficult by the fact that these threats are often more external than they are the result of a foodservice company’s own decisions. “We think it's our responsibility to focus on being good citizens and let them know what the real world looks like.” I appreciate Jamie for taking the time to talk to me. He’s a great person and a great friend, and that has taken him a long way in his career.   Resources: Get in touch with Jamie on LinkedIn   Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. This week's podcast is all about restaurants. We talk with John Barker, CEO of the Ohio Restaurant Association, about what's worrying the state's restaurateurs, including why most are against a minimum wage hike. We also touch on whether tipping should be banished, how fast-casual is shaking up dining, and advice for those looking to open their own restaurant (and why they maybe shouldn't do it).
