Disciple Up #278 Stewardship Part Two By Louie Marsh, 10-5-2022   Leadership Servanthood Trust/Faithful   NEW TESTAMENT   oikonomos (οἰκονόμος) primarily denoted “the manager of a household or estate” (oikos, “a house,” nemo, “to arrange”), “a steward” (such were usually slaves or freedmen), Luke 12:42; 16:1, 3, 8; 1 Cor. 4:2; Gal. 4:2, RV (KJV, “governors”); in Rom. 16:23, the “treasurer (RV) of a city (see CHAMBERLAIN, Note); it is used metaphorically, in the wider sense, of a “steward” in general, (a) of preachers of the gospel and teachers of the Word of God, 1 Cor. 4:1; (b) of elders or bishops in churches, Titus 1:7; (c) of believers generally, 1 Pet. 4:10.¶   Oikonomia is transliterated into English as “economy.” The English word that translates—rather than transliterates—the word oikonomia is the English word stewardship. So, stewardship and economics are closely related concepts, and in fact, to a New Testament Christian, there was no distinction between them.   A steward in the ancient world was a person who was given the responsibility and authority to rule over the affairs of the household. For example, the patriarch Joseph became a steward over Potiphar's household: he managed everything in the household and was given the authority to rule over the house (Gen. 39:1–6a). In that role, he was responsible to manage the household well; he was not to waste the resources of the family but to make wise decisions.   Yet, the role of the steward was not something that just happened to emerge in the Greek system of management, nor was it something invented by the Egyptians in the time of Joseph. The steward's role derives from the principle of stewardship, which is rooted in the creation of mankind.   What Is Biblical Stewardship   The concept in the New Testament that describes and defines what it means to be a servant before Christ is the word stewardship. Economics and the ethical and emotional issues that surround it are frequent topics of discussion and front-page news items. This is particularly true in an election year, when much of the debate focuses on economic issues. What we don't see initially is that other issues, such as education and abortion, are also questions of economics. Broadly understood, economics has to do not only with money or taxes or business but with the management of resources. That includes all of our resources, such as the resource of our unborn children and educational materials and policies.   In other words, how we use our resources is the subject of economics, and in a biblical sense it is the chief concern of stewardship. Consider the verbal link between stewardship and economics. The English word economics and economy come from the Greek word oikonomia, which is made up of two parts: oikos, the word for “house” or “household,” and nomos, the word for “law.” So, oikos and nomos together literally mean "house law."   Jesus was a Steward:   “42And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?” (Luke 12:42, ESV)   “1He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions.” (Luke 16:1, ESV)   Paul was a Steward:   “1This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:1–2, ESV)   “1I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, 2but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father.” (Galatians 4:1–2, ESV)   “23Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you.” (Romans 16:23, ESV)   Peter was a Steward:   “10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10–11, ESV)   2) How it's used – how the words are used in the Bible   STEWARD   “15Thus says the Lord God of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him:” (Isaiah 22:15, ESV)   “3and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.” (Luke 8:3, ESV)   “7For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,” (Titus 1:7, ESV)   STEWARDS   “14“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property.” (Matthew 25:14, ESV)   “1This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:1–2, ESV)   “10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:” (1 Peter 4:10, ESV)   STEWARDSHIP   “15But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. SESSION 16 It is convenient to run to God for supply and provision whenever we find ourselves in some kind of pressing needs or some kind of trouble, and this is good but not good enough if we truly desire to step into God’s ordained plan and design for us. The first time I saw the term god’s economy was around 1993, 94, not very sure. During this period, I was into selling Christian books and also help to build Christian leaders’ personal libraries. I remember going into a bookshop ran by Christian science, and I saw this big book with the title, god’s economy. I could remember opening just to check what in the world this book could be talking about. I had previously bought some concordance and other reference books in the shop. I remember looking at the name of the author, and it says witness nee. But i remember another Chines author by the name watchman nee. I did not by the book that day because i was a bit skeptical, partly due to the Christian science environment. By the time i returned to buy a copy, they have all been sold. I did regret not buying a copy that day. I later in the future found the pirated copies that were printed in various volumes. The Greek word economy Oikonomia comes from the word stewardship. It means the manager of a household. The administrator of a house, a distributor or dispenser of resource, or even assignment that makes the house run effectively. The father has a divine enterprise and investment that should be administrated according to his divine program. MATHEW 24 …45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the others their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whose master returns and finds him doing his job. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.…

Continue to explore hypothesis, economy, and recapitulation. Consider the economy (“Oikonomia”) or the way the work is structured out. It means the good order and arrangement of affairs. How does the hypothesis relate to the economy? A valid hypothesis must express its economy. The overall gist of the story must make sense of all of its component parts and vice versa. Where do we get the “economy” of Scripture? We get the economy through the teachings of the Church, which upholds the Rule of Faith. Irenaeus stated, “But we hold fast to the rule of truth, that there is one almighty God who founded everything through his Word and arranged it and made everything out of the non-existent . . .” As the Church proclaims the Gospel, it is setting up the economy of Scripture. Christ is the center of all the economies of Scripture. Consider recapitulation, which is a summary and conclusion. For Irenaeus, Christ is the answer and fulfillment to all the questions to the Old Testament and creation. Jesus is the “x”, the referent and Christ is the hypothesis. Consider the broad view of hypothesis, economy, and recapitulation. There are various intensive reading strategies including the lexical strategy, which are tools to help study in the original languages. There are also translations for example, the LXX and Origen’s Hexapla. The goal of intensive readings is to gain a better understanding of what is written. Another strategy is the Dialectical strategy that considers apparent contradictions for example the Arian controversy and also the term “created by” in Hebrews 3:2 and Proverbs 8:22 as compared to what it tells us in John 1:1. The goal is to arrive at a unified reading by showing how seeming distinctions or contradictions illuminate other parts of Scripture. Athanasius points out that if Jesus was made, than he is a work. Ecclesiastes 12:14 states, “ For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.” But Jesus will never be brought to judgment. Consider what we read in Sanctified Vision. Consider that essence is being and economy is doing. Lastly there is the Associative strategy that attempts to establish links between texts. Cyril of Alexandria in his commentary on John states in reference to Ecclesiastes 10:9-10, “. . . whoever splits wood will be endangered thereby if the iron is blunt and he does not sharpen the edge he will be troubled and work harder.” For Cyril, wood is the Holy Scripture and the axe is the reader. Did Cyril taking things too far? How do we consider allegorical interpretation? Where does Cyril arrive at this interpretation? The goal of the Associative strategy is that it enhances the total reading of Scripture and it also provides a depth of interpretation.

Why the Church-Age, the dispensation of the mystery, is so important for you to master. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 f. The divine division and provision of the different dispensations. These divine divisions of different dispensations are periods of times in human history expressed in terms of divine revelation for that period. The inerrancy of the Word of God is the only true source for looking at history from the divine viewpoint. Dispensations are the means that God uses by which believers living at a specific time in history can adjust to God's will, and God's plan and God's purpose for their lives. The whole key to understanding every dispensation is based upon the courtroom trial of the angelic conflict and how the biblical interpretation of history relates to the different dispensations and to that conflict. The oldest book in the Bible from the standpoint of writing is not the book of Genesis but the book of Job which is written in Archaic Hebrew. The very first book that God gave man starts out with a scene in the courtroom of heaven and the angelic conflict and a man being entered into evidence testing. The very first passage of human history began in a courtroom, actually the Garden of Eden, with two individuals, Ish and Ishshah, or Adam and the woman, being interrogated by Satan, whose name means attorney, accuser, and who is called serpent, Gen 3. Then human history ends with the last book of the Bible, Revelation, with mankind standing in another courtroom, the Supreme Court of Heaven, before the Great White Throne Judgment to plead their case before God as to why they did not think they needed Him. Since God is light, and since He won't be there, there will be no light where they live. Since God is love, and since He won't be there, there will be no love where they live. Since God is holy, and since He won't be there, there will be no holiness, where they live. a. The sovereignty of God. b. The integrity or holiness of God. c. The love of God. d. The life and personality of God. e. The omnipresence of God. f. The omniscience of God. g. The omnipotence of God. h. The faithfulness of God. i. The happiness of God. j. The grace of God. The Church-age, the dispensation of the mystery = the intensified stage of the appeal trial of Satan and the angelic conflict. Oikonomia - “the management of a household or of household affairs” (oikos, “a house,” nomos, “a law”). The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament = it is used for the “divine plan” of salvation and spiritual instruction or training in faith. Theocentric Dispensations refer to the Old Testament periods of time emphasizing and glorifying God the Father's purpose in the divine provision of dispensations as they relate to the angelic conflict. Two Theocentric Dispensations - 1. The age of the Gentiles in the Old Testament, Adam to the Exodus generation, 1441 B.C. 2. The age of the Jew, 1441 B.C. to the first Advent of Christ, 4-5 B.C. Two Christocentric Dispensations where TLJC is the center of the dispensation - 3. The Hypostatic Union, 4-5, B.C. to His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension, 30 A.D. 4. The Church-age, 30 A.D., to the Rapture, ? A.D. Two Eschatological Dispensations: 5. The Tribulation, from Rapture to the Second Advent of Christ. 6. The Millennium, from the Second Advent to the last Judgment. There are basically six dispensations, which is interesting because in the Bible, 6 represents the number of man and therefore it can refer to history of man. 7 represents God's perfection, His sovereignty and holiness, and therefore the after human history is completed we will enter into the eternal state. God the Holy Spirit restored the earth in seven days. The seven-day week is a reminder of our creator. God blessed the seventh day, making it holy, EXO 20:8-11. Noah took every clean beast and every bird by sevens, and in seven days it rained; where's that in the Bible? Gen 7. The New Testament has the seven loaves; seven devils exorcised from Mary Magdalene; forgiveness seventy times seven. Revelation has seven churches. Luke's Gospel demonstrates that Jesus was predestined for greatness because great men occurred in multiples of seven generations starting from Adam, Enoch at 7, Abraham at 21, David at 35 and Jesus at 77. Also in Acts, there were seven deacons of the church. LUK 6:40 “A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.” Six dispensations divided into three categories: 1. Theocentric 2. Christocentric 3. Eschatological Our Lord accomplished the strategic victory of the angelic conflict through His salvation ministry on the cross plus His physical death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. The believer accomplishes the tactical victory of the angelic conflict through his advance to spiritual maturity in the PPOG; at this point he becomes an invisible hero. In the Church-age, if enough believers grow to spiritual maturity to form a pivot, there will be prosperity in certain portions of the earth. (1) Angelic power, manifest by a lot of demon possession among unbelievers and a lot of demon influence of believers. (2) Human power, organized for influence and control. Our Lord will have representation on earth until the Second Advent when the devil's kingdom comes to an end. Jesus Christ does not come down to the earth today to bail you out as He did with believers in the past. You have a portfolio of invisible assets and the PPOG. If God performs a miracle, it is an insult, for it can never be compared to your portfolio of invisible assets. During the Old Testament, Jesus Christ was present many times on earth, including His incarnation, which occurred in the dispensation of Israel. In the Millennium He will be on the earth ruling for 1000 years. The provision for the Royal Family of God is infinitely greater than any grace provision of any other dispensation in history. God's grace provision of the portfolio of invisible assets plus the PPOG in time duplicates the grace provision of eternity past and the prehistoric angelic conflict. All the demon activity, wars, invasions, and violence of the coming Tribulation period is absolutely nothing compared to your challenge in the Church-age. As a winner, you demonstrate the validity of the sentence to fallen angels in eternity past. The Church-age exists to challenge Satan during the absence of Christ from the earth. This is why you have many problems and difficulties in your life, EPH 6:12, 2CO 10:3-4. While Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father, the Church exists to challenge and to utilize divine power to defeat Satan's purposes. Because of the great power experiment of the Church-age, this dispensation is the crossroads of history, the intensified stage of the angelic conflict, the final blow to Satan's power on earth in the spiritual realm. In the angelic conflict, Satan tries to convince people that God is unfair, unjust, and a God who is not merciful or gracious. In this dispensation of grace, the Church-age, the dispensation of the mystery, God demonstrates the fallacy of the satanic lie through people who are graced-out totally. There has never been a time in human history where so much power has ever been released toward merit-less objects for the fulfillment of the plan of God. There is an infinite gap between divine perfection and human imperfection and grace is the infinite filler that fills the gap. EPH 3:2 - calls this the dispensation of the total grace-out. 2CO 6:9 we are unknown yet well-known,
