Send us a textAbout This EpisodeWould you ever chase a stranger off the subway? That's exactly what Jenny Wood did, and it changed her life forever. This stranger became her husband and the experience became a powerful metaphor for embracing what she calls "wild courage," the ability to take bold action despite our deepest fears. During her 18 years at Google, Jenny Wood grew from entry-level to executive leadership, running operations teams that drove billions in annual revenue. The heart of Jenny's philosophy is her framework of nine counterintuitive traits: weird, selfish, shameless, nosy, obsessed, manipulative, brutal, reckless, and bossy. These deliberately provocative terms represent qualities we're taught to suppress, especially women. Jenny brilliantly reclaims these traits, showing how embracing the right version of each empowers us to achieve extraordinary results. Whether you're considering a career pivot, seeking promotion, or simply want to live more boldly, this episode will give you the tools to embrace your own wild courage. Gravity - The Digital Agency Power Up : Weekly shows for digital marketing agency owners.
In today's episode, I spoke with Andy Storch, an author, keynote speaker, consultant, and trainer who helps professionals in large companies own their careers and prepare for the future. As someone who transitioned from corporate consulting to entrepreneurship, Andy shares his journey of building multiple successful ventures including his book "Own Your Career, Own Your Life," his speaking business, and the Talent Development Think Tank conference and community. This conversation couldn't come at a better time for you, my audience of consultants, coaches, and experts building your businesses. As AI tools make certain aspects of our work more automated, Andy highlights why human connections and personal branding are becoming even more valuable currencies in today's marketplace.Three Key Takeaways You Can Apply Today:✅ Commit to consistent sales activities - The most successful consultants maintain regular sales efforts regardless of how busy they get with client work. Set up a simple system to reach out, follow up, and stay in regular contact with prospects, understanding that in the corporate world, sales cycles often take 3-6 months.✅ Build around your strengths - Take time to identify what you excel at and enjoy, then structure your business to leverage those strengths. Andy learned to focus on his speaking and facilitation talents while delegating project management tasks that didn't align with his skills.✅ Use tools to stay organized - Implement systems like Notion to keep your contacts, sales activities, and communications organized in one searchable place. Consider hiring a virtual assistant to handle lower-value tasks so you can focus on high-value activities like sales and client delivery.Andy's Three Steps for Future Success:
Today on the show we've got Jenny Wood discussing her new book Wild Courage: Go After What You Want and Get It, which hits shelves on March 25. In the book, Jenny writes about how courage is essential to our success, and how, in her words, “Wild courage will change your life.” She explains to us what wild courage is, anyway; how to look fear in the eye and do it—whatever it is to you—scared; the four-step goal setting practice of rock, chalk, talk, and walk; and in one of the most fascinating parts of the book to me, Jenny takes nine traits that aren't necessarily associated with courage and reframed them for wild courage. You'll see what I mean when you read the book and listen to the episode. Jenny tells us about her absolutely wild love story—which was featured in The New York Times—and Jenny really is just incredibly fascinating: she is a tap dancer, an FAA-licensed private pilot, and a zucchini bread connoisseur, in her words. She describes herself in her bio as an “Unstoppable confidence booster,” and was a top executive at Google and is the founder of Own Your Career, one of the largest career development programs in Google's history. Jenny's work is dedicated to helping people make their impossible dreams happen, and she is a speaker, writer, mom, and, while at Google, ran a large operations team that helped drive tens of billions of revenue per year. Her writing has been featured in the Harvard Business Review, Entrepreneur, Inc., and Forbes. Take a listen to our conversation!Wild Courage: Go After What You Want and Get It by Jenny Wood

So you want career growth. But how do you make it happen? You need to answer the question of 'what do you mean by career growth'. And the answer could be ANYTHING. Time with family. Travelling. Money. Praise. Promotions. Prestige. Specialization. Really it could be anything and an honest, personal answer will help you achieve it. This was the focus of my conversation with Adam Pekarsky. He's had career growth, but not really of the traditional kind. He started out as a lawyer and now he is a leader and majority shareholder at Humanis Advisory - an executive search firm. He reflects on career growth in his new book (out this month) called "The Ampersand Chronicles Vol 1: Stories of a Small but Mighty Business in a Rough and Tumble Town". He writes the most amazing blog you've read and has organized his best into a book! So his insights on career growth from his own perspective but also that of the people he helps: - All motivation is valid, but you have to know what yours are. - Maybe you want to climb the ladder, but maybe you want something else as well. There may be trade-offs. - He resists the idea of work life balance because it's limiting, a zero-sum game. For him it's 'work-life integration' and it enables more possibilities. - Passion is important. Think about what Tiger Woods said in his prime "I'm not the best golfer in the world because I have the most talent. I'm the best golfer in the world because I practice the most." It would be hard to 'practice the most' without passion. It was wonderful conversation full of good stories and good advice Find Adam on LinkedIn or at https://humanisadvisory.com/ To get a copy of the book, please contact Kiara Tyler at kiara@humaniscalgary.com and they will add you to the list!
