On February 16th 2021, Pastor James Coates turned himself in to the police. He was arrested "for violating a bail condition to comply with COVID-19 health orders," he was charged with breaching health restrictions, and spent 35 days in jail for refusing to sign a legal undertaking requiring him to stop holding non-compliant services. On March 22nd 2021, Pastor James Coates was released. Today, Mondo welcomes Pastor Coates to the show to discuss this story and his new book, "God vs. Government."

GUEST: NATHAN BUSENITZ, co-author, God vs. GovernmentAs the Covid-19 virus spread across the world, governing authorities mandated shutdowns on businesses, schools, and churches. We were promised that it would be just “two weeks to stop the spread” or “a month to flatten the curve.”Well, two weeks turned into 24 months of shutdowns, mask mandates, gathering and movement restrictions, and “get-vaccinated-or-else”. And while the virus has retreated for now, just wait for the next variant to arrive and the vise will be tightened again.One perspective became abundantly clear during the mandated lockdowns—the government views in-person church gathering as “non-essential”. Meanwhile, liquor stores and big box stores like Wal-Mart were allowed to stay open as “essential”. The duplicity and ineffectiveness of the measures was obvious to any discerning observer.In the midst of all this, a large church with a well-known pastor in Los Angeles (Grace Community Church, John MacArthur) and a small church with a little-known pastor in Edmonton (GraceLife Church, James Coates) came to the same conclusion: they “must obey God rather than men” and reopen their churches in obedience to what Scripture declares, particularly in Hebrews 10:“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:23-25).Both churches (and some others) opened in defiance of government edicts. National media covered the story, certain Christians sniped how these churches were “not loving their neighbor” or were “disobedient to Romans 13”. Thankfully it appears we can now put COVID in our rear view mirrors. This pandemic is over but the scars and fears remain. One of the fears involves the persecution of Christians that saw pastors get arrested and thrown into prison for refusing to bow down to the government. In America when we hear about this type of persecution we associate it with some far off country in the Middle East and certainly not with our neighbor Canada up north. Unfortunately our former good neighbor Canada used Covid as a reason to persecute the Christian church there and it's pastors. One such Pastor was James Coates and he has a story to tell and we are sharing it with you today. On this show we are talking about pastors who have been imprisoned in Canada for breaching health protocols.Both governments and churches have walked off their maps since early 2020, when efforts to curb the health impacts of Covid-19 first began. Health protocols and policies have varied from province to province and changed constantly. In early 2021, the Alberta government increased restrictions on church gatherings at that time in the province. Many complied, but some leaders felt that the measures were doing more harm to their congregations than good. One such leader was Pastor James Coates from GraceLife Church in Edmonton, Alberta. He and his leadership team, as a matter of personal conscience and conviction, actually breached the health protocols. This landed Pastor Coates in jail, and led to the eventual lockdown of his church building by the Alberta government. Following this, Pastor Tim Stephens from Fairview Baptist Church in Calgary, was also arrested in front of his small children at his home after allegedly violating public health restrictions and failure to comply with a court order that was never actually received. He is expected to be before the courts with his case in the spring of 2022. These pastors, along with others across the nation, represent a spectrum of theological perspectives, but all have one in thing common, in that they are conducting themselves in accordance to their personal conscience, and standing on section two of the Canadian Charter, which protects freedom of religion and conscience in Canada. Pastor James and Pastor Tim join us to update and discuss what has been happening with their cases. Dr. Joe Boot from the Ezra Institute also joins us to give commentary. Thank you for joining.
