Like many pastors and churches, when COVID-19 hit the news and shut down orders spread across the globe, Tim Stephens and Fairview Baptist Church stopped holding services and assessed the situation. Not knowing what they were dealing with, they took every step necessary to use wisdom and prudence in their decision-making. But as it became clear that this virus was not all that the government made it out to be, Tim's convictions stirred to re-open the church and begin preaching and holding worship services. His decision to re-open had a wide ripple effect that ultimately led to his imprisonment. As a husband, and a father to 8 children, Tim and Raquel Stephens had so much to lose. As fines piled up and public pressure mounted, Tim's convictions remained anchored. To end the whole ordeal all he had to do was sign an agreement stating that he would not go back and re-open the church. He refused. This interview is the entire story in his own words.

Fairview Baptist Church began in 1960 in obedience Jesus' command we call the Great Commission. As the church moves to a new and larger location we remember the calling we have as a church and as individual Christians. This sermon considers the command, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations."

It's Wednesday, November 9th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Thailand legalized abortions up to 20 weeks of pregnancy In Thailand, the country's Public Health Ministry legalized abortions up to 20 weeks of pregnancy at the end of last month. The move extends a previous law which allowed the murder of unborn babies up to 12 weeks. Pro-abortion legislation in the country is new. Thailand had criminalized abortion as recently as 2020. Canadian court acquitted pastor for in-person worship services Last Tuesday, the Provincial Court of Alberta acquitted a Canadian pastor of violating COVID-19 restrictions on in-person worship services. Pastor Tim Stephens of Fairview Baptist Church spent three weeks in jail last year for refusing to abide by the government's worship bans. In a blog post, Pastor Stephens praised God for the victory while calling for repentance in Canada. He wrote, “Our society with its laws, mandates, and opinions reflect a change of ‘god' with corresponding views of authority and humanity that will lead to dystopia unless there is repentance.” Psalm 37:1-3 says, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.” Victors include Huckabee Sanders, DeSantis, Rubio, and Polis Tens of millions of Americans headed to the polls yesterday for the 2022 midterm elections. At stake is control of both houses of Congress and 36 governorships. FiveThirtyEight released their final election forecast yesterday. Republicans were widely favored to win the U.S. House of Representatives. They were also slightly favored to win the Senate with a 59% chance of control over Democrats' 41% chance. The victors included New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu, Arkansas Republican Governor-elect Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio, Ohio Republican Senator-elect J.D. Vance, and Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis, a self-professed homosexual. Republican Greg Abbott beat Democrat Richard “Beto” O'Rourke Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott beat celebrity Democratic candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O'Rourke 55.8% to 43.0%, reports the Texas Tribune. Listen to what the Fox News panel had to say about O'Rourke last night, starting with Britt Hume. HUME: “O'Rourke is becoming the Charlie Crist of Texas.” (chuckles) MARTHA MacCALLUM: “He's gone from the cover of Vanity Fair magazine and this shining hope of the Democrat Party. Jessica, your thoughts on what has happened to Beto O'Rourke. Does this seal the deal? Is he done now in politics or not?” JESSICA TARLOV: “If the evening goes as I expect it to for Stacey Abrams as well, there's going to be a lot of soul searching about where you're dumping your money when you go on Act Blue. There are a lot of people whose races are a lot closer. “These are celebrity candidates. I think that there have been incredible messaging moments that are going to have rallied the Democratic base and made you really focus on the issues that matter to us as a party. They are seemingly just not great candidates to win statewide office and I hope people will take stock of that.” Senate races too close to call at 10:33pm central Tuesday night According to Fox News, a number of the hotly contested races for U.S. Senate were too close to call at The Worldview's press deadline last night at 10:33pm Central. They include the races in Georgia between Democrat Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Hershel Walker, in Pennsylvania between Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz, and in Wisconsin between Republican Senator Ron Johnson and Democrat challenger Mandela Barnes. A look at the past 22 midterm elections In a column entitled “The 2022 Midterm Elections: What The Historical Data Suggests,” John Wooley wrote, “In the 22 midterm elections from 1934 -2018, the President's party has averaged a loss of 28 House seats and four Senate seats. The president's party gained seats in the House only three times, but gained seats in the Senate on six occasions. The president's party has gained seats in both houses only twice. “The incumbent president's ability to launch new major policy initiatives would be greatly weakened under divided government. If the Democrats lose control of either House, the Administration can expect to be the target of numerous congressional inquiries.” New York Christians want to be able to defend themselves at church A church in New York State is challenging a law that bans guns in places of worship. The New York law prohibits the carrying of firearms in houses of worship regardless of whether a church “prefers to permit—or even encourage—people to carry a firearm on its premises.” First Liberty Institute filed the lawsuit last Thursday on behalf of His Tabernacle Family Church. The lawsuit accuses New York of making churches choose between their First and Second Amendment rights as well as leaving them particularly vulnerable to violence. Daughter of 107-year-old South Carolinian woman gives God the glory And finally, a Christian woman from South Carolina celebrated her 107th birthday last month. Adell Julie Thompson was born October 10, 1915. She told WLTX News 19 she does what the Bible tells her: “I had no dream of being 107 years. But the Lord spared me, and I try to do the right thing.” Thompson has lived through 18 U.S. presidencies. Her legacy includes three children, six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren. Thompson's daughter gave God the glory for her mother's long life. DAUGHTER: “I get to be here to do this interview about my mama, with my momma alive and well, in her right mind, my family members that's all around it. That's all I can say. To God be the glory and I thank God for every moment of it.” Proverbs 3:16 says of the wisdom from God, “Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, November 9th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Pastor acquitted after being arrested when police helicopter found church gathering outside during pandemic A Canadian pastor who was arrested twice in 2021 for continuing to congregate with his church in Calgary, Alberta, during the pandemic was acquitted of the public health-related charges against him Tuesday. The Provincial Court of Alberta tossed out charges against Pastor Tim Stephens alleging he violated provincial public health orders regarding physical distancing, his attorneys at the Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) announced in a press release. Stephens was imprisoned twice last year for keeping his Fairview Baptist Church open. His second arrest, which reportedly happened after a police helicopter found his church gathering outside after police had locked their church, prompted Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., to send a letter to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) urging it to consider adding Canada to its watch list. "We are pleased that the Court has acquitted Pastor Stephens on the charges of not complying with a public health order," attorneys for Stephens said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. "Pastor Stephens was illegally arrested and imprisoned for having allegedly violated the public health orders, which have since been shown to be ineffective and harmful." This is just my opinion. On today's podcast, David Fiorazo interviews Pastor Tim Stephens of Fairview Baptist Church in Calgary, who has been arrested twice so far for obedience to Christ, leading his congregation, and continuing to hold church services in spite of government orders and limitations on worship in Canada. Daily podcast, relevant articles on issues pertaining to Christians and more can be found on Stand Up For The Truth.
On this show we are talking about pastors who have been imprisoned in Canada for breaching health protocols. Both governments and churches have walked off their maps since early 2020, when efforts to curb the health impacts of Covid-19 first began. Health protocols and policies have varied from province to province and changed constantly. In early 2021, the Alberta government increased restrictions on church gatherings at that time in the province. Many complied, but some leaders felt that the measures were doing more harm to their congregations than good. One such leader was Pastor James Coates from GraceLife Church in Edmonton, Alberta. He and his leadership team, as a matter of personal conscience and conviction, actually breached the health protocols. This landed Pastor Coates in jail, and led to the eventual lockdown of his church building by the Alberta government. Following this, Pastor Tim Stephens from Fairview Baptist Church in Calgary, was also arrested in front of his small children at his home after allegedly violating public health restrictions and failure to comply with a court order that was never actually received. He is expected to be before the courts with his case in the spring of 2022. These pastors, along with others across the nation, represent a spectrum of theological perspectives, but all have one in thing common, in that they are conducting themselves in accordance to their personal conscience, and standing on section two of the Canadian Charter, which protects freedom of religion and conscience in Canada. Pastor James and Pastor Tim join us to update and discuss what has been happening with their cases. Dr. Joe Boot from the Ezra Institute also joins us to give commentary. Thank you for joining. They're just hirelings. You know, Jesus talked about the hireling. And he said, when the hireling is watching over the flock, the first time he sees the predator coming, he abandons the sheep and runs off to save his own hide. But the shepherd, when he sees the predator approaching, he'll lay his life down for the sheep. 0:24 Wake up church, there's a war going on for the soul of our country, where the lies of the demonic control the narratives of our culture. Join your host, Gary Duncan, in search of the kingdom, warriors of our time, those not afraid to speak up and walk out the word of God in the face of evil. Get ready for a supernatural impartation a spiritual download of faith and fire into your life. Welcome to the remnant revolution. 0:53 As you were talking about the pastures that is if every pastor or enough of them stood up to this tax exam, oppression, yeah, and would all come together and realize that we can preach government, we can preach politics, we can preach this stuff without fear. If they all did go worse. Yeah, then then they'd have to take them all to jail. 1:17 Well, that's that's exactly right. In fact, Richard land who used to lead the engagement section of the Southern Baptist Convention, trying to get people to engage, used to say, if we're all willing to go to jail, none of us will have to. It's kind of like what Benjamin Franklin said, We either hang together or we hang separately. Here's the deal. The church there's never been a church in the history of the IRS, not one that's lost tax exempt status for political speech, not one church. And if people don't want to believe me, check out Matt Staver, the founder and president of Liberty Counsel. Mat Staver is one of the leading lawyers, attorneys in America, he's defending Christians left and right. And he's one of the leading authorities on Christians and tax law. And we have Matt Staver to speak at our boot camps that we do, we might want to mention those towards the end of our discussion, but at our boot camps, we have Matt speak, and he alleviates the fear that these pastors have of losing their tax free status. I actually do a presentation on the IRS and the Johnson Amendment and all that kind of stuff. But here's the deal. If we stay silent long enough, they're going to weaponize the IRS, I'm just telling you, they're gonna do that. And they'll come after us eventually, if we keep staying silent. You know, Dr. Ben Carson said he had never been audited by the IRS until he spoke at that prayer breakfast with President then President Obama, and, you know, challenged him. And of course, that's how Ben Carson then became kind of a national name. Everybody knew him. But he said after that I was audited three or four times just one right after the other. Yeah. Hmm. 3:04 I was gonna say, I watch the hearings back when the IRS was persecuting and going after the Tea Party. Sure. It was unbelievable. I didn't listen to the news or watch the actual conversations back and forth. And you could tell the this director, mopping he was lying through his teeth, and just say, well, the smugness of what they were doing, and if and if you people don't believe this, I would, I would urge them and this I watched this not too long ago with Simone gold, Dr. Simone gold. Oh, sure. Same thing. She She Oh, have you Okay, we she takes you through step by step of when she first started, you know, with some of the vaccine mandates, how they've gone from just persecuting her to now anybody that even in contact with her has now had all kinds of issues and things develop people come in. I mean, it's unreal. I'm like, Oh my gosh, and so it's to me, we're in the middle of a I call it a medical terrorism because they're right they're trying to scare us from doing anything. 4:17 And that's one of their that's why they're making such examples out of these these soldiers who've spoken out. Now one of them was still in uniform and should have resigned first and then made these comments but they're trying to make an example that's what they're doing with all the people from January the sixth now they should not have gone into the Capitol and done what they did that was that was wrong, but they are not guilty of crimes that they ought to be treated the way put in solitary confinement for you know, since then, and all that kind of stuff. They're trying to make examples out of them to send a message to everybody else. Keep your mouth shut. Don't say anything. Don't stand up. Listen in 2008 I don't know if you're familiar with Alliance Defending used to be called ATF Alliance Defense Fund, but they're one of the largest Christian defense organizations in the world. Certainly in the United States, they launched what was called puppet freedom initiative. And the pulpit freedom initiative was a direct attack on the Johnson Amendment. And they vetted and trained 33 pastors across America to actually defy the Johnson Amendment and break the law, according to tax law, and endorse candidates from their pulpits, I was one of them. And then when we did that, that was when john mccain was running for president and we all held our noses and endorsed him. After that, the next day on Monday, we sent copies of our sermons to the IRS and said, This is what I did in my pulpit yesterday. And I was exercising my first amendment right. Now the reason we did that is we were trying to get the IRS to come after us and then ADF was going to defend us. And we were going to prove once and for all, that the Johnson Amendment is unconstitutional. We know what the IRS did nothing. And we've done the pulpit freedom initiative Sunday, on most major general elections, ever since the last official pulpit freedom Sunday, we had there were over 1600 pastors who officially participated that ADF would have defended, had the IRS come after them. And the IRS has done absolutely nothing. They even released unofficially, an unofficial memo that where they admitted that they don't have the authority to tell a preacher what he can preach, or what he can preach. Well, this is the fact. But these guys are under the illusion that they're going to lose their nonprofit status. When they're not. There never has been a church that's lost over political speech. But here's the deal, Gary, even if we did, are we going to be silent? I mean, I'd rather have my Liberty than tax free exemption. I mean, you know, are tax exempt status. The church ought to be because the power to tax would then give the the government the power to control the church, they control everything else they tax. But my point is, the most important thing is not a tax exempt status, the most important thing is freedom to speak our minds guaranteed by the First Amendment. So these preachers need to quit worrying about their tax free, you know, tax exempt status. Yeah, that's an issue and we ought to fight that. But that's not the most important issue, the most important issue is their freedom of speech, the freedom of religious thought, good grief, are they not even going to fight for that? And these guys? Well, for the most part, Gary, I think most pastors are ill informed cowards. And today, we're pastored by hirelings, these guys do it for a paycheck. They're probably good guys, generally speaking, but they're in it for the career. They want a big church, they want a big paycheck, they want to be able to go play golf all the time, and they're not going to do anything that will jeopardize that. And there's cowards. I've even said that, well, to go around the country and paint most churches yellow, because because that's what they are, they're yellow. So it takes patriots to fight. If you remember, the framers, when they signed the Declaration of Independence, they thought they were signing their death warrants. They were convinced that they were going to be killed, and they would have been had the British won that fight, they would have executed all of those men that signed that declaration of independence and 8:49 many others. That's a brand that brings a thought to my mind about Win Win or the church and I say the church meaning just the body of Christ. Yeah. When are we willing to sign our death warrant? You know, it's obviously 9:05 not now. 9:08 But so we went, how bad you got to get for us to say, Okay, this is enough. We need to stand up and do some Yeah, I don't like you said, I don't know that we have that much time. 9:17 Well, Gary, in my presentation, when I when I get toward the end of it, I step out of character, and I become myself in my presentation. And I talk about what happens to a culture when the church goes silent. And I use Germany as an illustration. You know, the church in Germany just sat by while Hitler and the Nazis took over, because, you know, economy was getting better things were looking up and I even show pictures of Cardinals and bishops standing there doing the Heil Hitler salute. I even have pictures of Cardinals and bishops shaking hands with Hitler. They thought that if they could stay neutral, everything would be okay. Well, we know how that turned out. It wasn't okay, and In the end, Hitler went after the Catholics to I mean, he hated them all. Because tyrants cannot allow freedom of thought they just can't have that you got to knuckle under. And tyrants will always go after the church because the Church says, No, we're accountable to God and you're not God. That's why the Caesars in Rome, were so rough on the Christians, the first two or three centuries, because the Christians refused to say, Caesars Lord, Jesus is Lord. Now we'll we'll submit Caesar to you as our governor, but you're not the Lord. Well, that wasn't good enough. And so they killed Christians. That's what they always do. So I don't know how these preachers, these modern preachers today think that if America falls and goes Marxist, that they're going to be okay, because they're not going to be okay. 10:55 To me this, it's for me, it's plain to see that everything that we're going through right now, with the vaccines and the January 6, and all the things that are happening, I mean, we're getting hit, we're in a war, and we're getting hit from all sides. Yeah, if you look at it, every bit of it is anti God. It's an anti rubberised is moving itself around the world. And so if we're in that place, then to me, the church, the body of Christ should should shift from a peace time mentality to a wartime mentality. Yes. And so, you know, and you hear that, I know you did an article on Romans 13, unlimited submission to government released that book, there's a great bunch of people that that's what they fall on, you know, well, we got to submit to government and I hear it, you know, I think even in Titus three, one through two says, remind them to be subject to the rules and authorities to obey to the already for every good work to speak evil of no one to be peaceful, gentle, showing all humanity, humility to all men, you're right, that you're like, Okay, so I can't stand up and fight against, you know, Allah, because that would be speaking evil. 12:09 But Gary, in my book that I just released on Romans 13, by the way, if the people are interested in my materials, they can go to my website, Dan Fisher brr.com. And they can they can get our materials. But in that book, 12:22 we'll have all that in the links in the in the show notes and all that we'll have all that Lego as 12:26 well, in my book on Romans 13, I identify the kind of government that Paul is saying, you should submit to he says that the kind of government that's worthy of your submission, rewards the doers of good and punishes the doers of evil. And by doing so, they become a minister of God, because all authority ultimately comes from God. Then I quote, preachers from the Great Awakening, and our war of independence, who, who were preaching about those very passages of Scripture, and they clearly say, as Paul does that, if a government does the opposite of what Paul says, and they punish the doers of good and reward the doers of evil. Well, that's the opposite of the kind of government Paul's talking about. So, in a republic, like ours, all lived under a dictatorship. We live in a republic, where the people or the government see people have got to understand that the government is not in Washington, DC. The government is not in their state capitol, the government is in their house. They are the government. That's what a Republic is. So if a government does the opposite of what Paul says it's supposed to do, it's not a minister of God. Do we honestly believe that Hitler was a minister of God, or that these godless democrats who actually took God out of their platform and want to murder preborn babies, even after they're born? They want to lay them on a table and let the mother and the doctor decide what to do with it. You it's much you know, a botched abortion. 14:03 Nancy, they just passed yesterday, I think it was thirsty. HR. Oh, my gosh, I forgot it. They just passed a bill that is called the women's health. And if you go in there and you read, and I did I went through and read some passages of their how they define what a woman is, and that it's just insane. It's insane what they're saying. Yes and No, right. You had you had one democrat that voted against it 14:34 in that sad Democrat. So that's why I say that Christians shouldn't even call themselves Democrat. I don't believe you can be a democrat and be a Christian. I don't either. And it's not because I'm dyed in the wool Republican, because I'm just as mad at the republicans as I am the democrats just for different reasons. I'm mad at the republicans because they don't stand for what they say they believe because our platform the republican party platform is great, but these turkeys won't stand for it. And then Senator They won't fight. They just they're just too much. Now all they care about their own careers, but when you look, see democrats for years have been hiding behind this mother's health thing. And the average American reads that and they say, Well, sure, we, we want to be able for a woman who's pregnant that has like, for instance, an ectopic pregnancy where the mother is going to die, because the baby is forming in the fallopian tube. Sure, the doctors have got to take care of that. That's what they think when it says mother's health, no, but but the democrats what they mean by mother's health is, if the mother is distraught, if the mother is worried if the mother is anxious, that they call that the mother's health, well, of course, a woman pregnant outside of wedlock is anxious and distraught, they've sinned, I wonder they're going to do what murdered their baby. They hide behind these terms. And until Americans wake up, and start to smell the coffee, As the old saying goes and realize that we're just flat out being lied to typically by both sides, but certainly by the left. They don't mean that their words don't mean what we think they mean, they've taken these terms, and they've redefined them. When they talk about paying your fair share, you know, when they talk about taxes, what they're talking about is theft. Yeah, what they're talking about is, you shouldn't make over a certain amount of money. And if you are wealthy by their definition, then you want to be able to confiscate it. The problem is, Gary, that's that, and that, that sin, and I've never been hired by a poor man. 16:41 I've said that so many times, I said that I said, Everybody I've worked for has always got more money than I do. They might go businesses, right? Is it because I'm self employed? And I've like, I've never worked for a poor person. And, you know, I've hired poor people. Yeah. But I've never worked for a poor person. No, in the mentality of what they say with that. It's just it's bizarre. 17:03 But isn't it funny, but isn't it funny that even though those democrats are themselves wealthy, that that law doesn't apply to them, because they're able to shelter their money and hide it, and steal it from taxpayers. So like, Nancy Pelosi is against you owning a gun, but she has hired guns surrounding her. She's against building a wall on the southern border, but she has a wall all the way around her property. 17:28 So Is that wrong? Yeah. Is that wrong for the church to stand up and say, Well, I see you as you're making laws, and you're the government, you're the government officials. Why is it that wrong for churches to stand up and, and speak that out and say that in the pulpit wrong, 17:47 Gary, it's wrong if they don't, yeah, Jane says in James 417. If you know to do good, and you don't do it, you've sinned. In a republic, citizens are the masters, but if they don't do their job, tyrants are more than happy to step in and do it for him. So when Jesus says render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's in America, Caesar is the people. So if you're going to obey Jesus command to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's you've got to be engaged in government at the citizen level, because that's what a Republic is. So your face obeying the commands of the Lord. 18:23 Wow, I'll say that again. I've never heard that that that because when you think of Caesar, you think of Oh, the bad guy. You know, because we're a republic. We are Caesar, we 18:33 are Caesar. So when Jesus says render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's if he was speaking in America today, then he's saying, citizen, do your job, because in America, since we have a republic of by and for the people, then we are Caesar. So the Christian that doesn't do their job is disobeying the command of Jesus to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's. So we're sending the Christian that doesn't vote in America, the Christian that doesn't speak out on these issues, the preacher that doesn't bring the biblical perspective on an institution that is of God and is found all throughout Scripture. I mean, I've challenged people show me an Old Testament hero that wasn't involved in government at some level. Show me one. 19:22 Didn't Jesus deal with the government half his life anyway? I mean, it wasn't. Of course he did. He was constantly failing when 19:28 he even refused to submit to these Sabbath laws because they were they were unbiblical. Even though the Sabbath laws were as binding as the other Roman laws. Jesus didn't submit to all the laws. He didn't submit to those that were improper. He refused to do it. So he wasn't a rebel. He's the Lord. He's sinless. But show me one Old Testament hero that wasn't involved in government. You can't find one. I mean, Esther. Abraham, Abraham fought a war to To go free lot, I was Moses, Joshua, and they go through the list Daniel hit, you can't hardly find any. Because the job of the Christian is to be engaged and be salt and light in the culture. And governance is a key ingredient of the culture. It's not all that there is in the culture. And I'm not suggesting that all of the answers are found in government. But I am telling you, that government is 1/3 of what God instituted so that we could live civilly on this planet. And if you don't address that, 1/3 that 1/3 goes to hell. I mean, literally hell in a handbasket. And if it's government, think of the damage that it does. If it's the home if we don't address the home, and it goes to hell in a handbasket. What happens in America? well over half of the minorities in America, over half of their pregnancies are from unwed mothers, we can see what's happening in America, look at the divorce rate. Okay, so if you don't address the church, from a biblical perspective, what happens to the church, it goes to hell in a handbasket. What's happened to the church in America. So what preachers are doing these days and they've been doing it for two or three decades, they preach Christian psychology, what they're basically preaching is self help gospel, about how you can be a better you how you can have your best life now, how you can have five steps to success, three steps to this four ways to do that. And yeah, the Bible does teach how we can be a better us. But what the Bible really teaches is how we're to be holy instead of happy, and how holy people stand up against evil. And what's happening in America right now is evil. It is wicked. Nancy Pelosi is one of the most wicked women to ever be in governance in America. And I would say that if she was a Republican, I don't care that she's a Democrat. In the end. She's one of the most wicked individuals, Chuck Schumer, same way. Joe Biden has been wicked. All of his political life is just that now he's kind of mentally diminished and people kind of feel sorry for him. Go back and listen or read, listen to or read the things that Joe Biden used to say back when he was mentally, all together. He's a wicked person. Kamala Harris is so bad. She was the first one to drop out of the Democratic primary. She's a wicked individual, these people are wicked Bill Clinton is a wicked, immoral whoremonger according to Scripture. You know, Hillary Clinton is a turncoat liar. I mean, according to Scripture, I'm not saying that I'm attacking them personally. Jesus can save them but the Bible calls liars people that are going to be in the lake of fire. 22:51 So we need sorry that I'm so No, no, there's nothing to be sorry for because that's hail and brimstone. And we haven't heard that and 50 years, you know, well, 23:01 you know, you read in the book of Revelation it says, all liars will have their partner like a fire. Well, that's liars. That's Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. They're liars. You know, all of those who practice sexual immorality. So you go to First Corinthians six, when Paul lists the people aren't going to be in heaven. He lists drunks, thieves, liars. Now, yeah, he lists the sexually immoral, he lists them right along in the sexually aberrant. But he but if you look at the list closely, you'll find yourself on it. I found myself on the list. That's why I need Jesus. But these people that walk around claiming to be Christians, and on their way to heaven and their habitual liars, or their adulterers are adulterous is whether homosexual or lesbian Scripture says they're not going to be in heaven. 23:42 Did you watch it the way that leads to life is narrow. Did you hear the the new governor of New York or is it whoever took grief? Yes. And he starts talking about God, God brought, you know, God's saving us with this vaccine and God, this and God that like, Okay, I need to find out what church she goes to, because what she's spouting is so demonic. 24:08 Well, Gary, what she's done is she's created a god in her own image. That's what the Romans one talks about. Romans one talks about a fallen culture that redefines God in human terms. That's exactly what they do. They're talking about God, all right, but it didn't the God of the Bible. And if it is the god listed in the Bible, it's his name is Satan. These people are ministers of Satan is what they are. 24:32 Yeah, no, no. You're getting me riled up, because that's what I want to hear. That's what I want to hear in the pulpit. That's where we're at. That is 24:42 Fairview come to Fairview Baptist Church. And you'll hear it every Sunday. All the people can come to one of the churches that are going to have me do the black robe and they'll hear this stuff. 24:54 Yeah, any any pastor this, listen to this, I encourage you to reach out to him and let's talk We'll talk about your, your, your boot camp. But yeah, reach out to reach out to Dan, we'll have all the show notes and stuff, but to, to get educated to learn about this to, to sit down, have a meal and pray with, with Dan and to just really start looking at where our country is and what the passion of this, this black road regimen is, and, and just getting educated on history and and listen to what God's saying, but I just encourage anybody, you know, at this point right now to do that, as well as to the reach Look at his website. But talk to us about your boot camp, which, you know, what's the solution? I mean, we could probably I know I can go on for hours talking about planning and just getting riled up. Sure, you know, Holy Spirit, we got to pray to the Holy Spirit in our secret place. We've got to, you know, trust in Him, because, really, there's a question. Yes. And it's like, well, who can we trust him? We don't trust I don't trust anybody anymore. I used to, you know, you have some faith and faith and law and faith in the medical field. Well, that's out the window. Yeah, the land trust that. So we've always trust. If you're Christian, you always trust in Jesus and God, the Holy Spirit. But we're at a point where it's becoming real. It's not just something we read. It's real. It affects us deeply. So right solution. What's your solution for pastors? And how do 26:30 I believe there are two solutions, one of them is still far more controversial than the other. We can talk about it if you want to politically but spiritually, I believe the solution is pastors have got to reengage, we have got to have a modern version of the black robe regiment. And remember, again, that that black robe title was given by the British not as a compliment, but but as condemnation. When they captured these preachers out on the battlefield. I don't know if you know it, but they they execute most of them. Even while they're trying to surrender. I tell the story in my presentation of a preacher named john Rosberg, they executed him on the battlefield, he's trying to surrender to them. But we've got to have a new, we've got to have the spirit of the black robe regiment today. preachers have got to begin to engage, they've got to preach the whole counsel of God, not just the parts that they know people want to hear. They've got to preach the tough parts, too. And that's hard for me to do. Because it cuts me just like it cuts everybody else, the Word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than a double edged sword, the book of Hebrews says, so it's going to cut us when we preach it. But that's how we become closer to what God wants us to be. But so so my solution is to get pastors to engage. So the guy that I co pastor with, there's two pastors in our church, Paul Blair, and myself, we've been working together for years now we're in the same church together. Because we travel and speak so much. We have started doing what we call a Liberty pastors boot camp, or a Liberty pastors training camp. And by the way, you want to put that website up there to Liberty, pastures calm, okay, they can go to the website and find out where we're going to do the next camp. We're working on scheduling some right now. But what that camp is, is it's a three day boot camp, and I mean boot camp, we begin it by me doing the black robe Regiment, the whole deal. But anyway, we teach pastors, the nuts and bolts, and we asked them to bring their wives with them, and we put them up for three days, they pay a nominal registration fee, and donors pay the overwhelming majority of the whole cost they get in, they get a kind of a three day vacation in a really swanky place with meals and everything. But we teach them the nuts and bolts of what it means to be a black robe, preacher, and how to do that in their churches and why it is so critical. And I would encourage any pastor to come that's listening, or if there's a church member listening, and they want to encourage their pastor to come. There are many guys that were at our last camp. We had about 100 pastors and then their wives. We had men there who the church members sent them, they heard about it, and they put the money together and sent the pastor. So we we train these men, and when they come out of there, they have no excuse. They know how to be a black robe preacher. Now it's time to do it. And they also become part of a network of guys that we've trained. We've trained over 700 preachers around the country, and they become a network. They become a part of a network. And we do continuing education, we'll do webinars and other things that they can take advantage of, to continue their learning and sharpen you know, As iron sharpens iron, we all need to get better and so we do it together. 29:42 Do you have somebody in the Nashville area that you know, necessary? 29:47 We, I don't know if we've had pastors from the Nashville area, the Bible. We'd love to do one in Tennessee. We're working on doing one right now in Missouri. Arkansas. So that's pretty close to you. We just finished one in Houston, Texas, we've done them as far away as Miami, Florida. So yeah, yeah, we're so if you know somebody in your area would be interested in helping to host one, we'd love to come to the center of Tennessee and put on one it'd be, it'd be wonderful. 30:22 Well, I'll see what I can get going on something like that. Okay, great. That's contracting needed. definitely needed. Well, I know we could keep going for hours. But be respectful of your time. But so what's what's a final parting word that you would give to us as we listen to the individual, the individual person in the congregation that hears this that might be stirred, to want to get back a little bit more of learning what they can do, because I get overwhelmed when I think about everything that's going on in this country? And and where do I, you know, where do I start? I've got you know, some people have wife and kids. And of course, I do, too, but they're grown. But yeah, they have families and jobs. And it's like, I just don't have enough time. And then when I do have time, I just want to decompose from the world, because all I hear is the bad stuff going on. And everybody's on Facebook. And and yeah, we're getting canceled in every place we can go. But that's part of the remnant is that the remnant? is what's coming out of this. There's, yeah, there's the masses aren't getting it? 31:29 No, they're not? Well, what I would say to the individual person is that you either go to fight, or you're going to lose it all. Look what's beginning to happen with people who refuse to take the shot, whether or not the shots a good thing is a different argument. But I'm definitely against the government forcing you to take a shot, but what's happening to them, now they're losing their jobs. So not engaging, not engaging, is going to come to all of us. So they neither sit in a house and decompress or go do their hobbies, and stay out of the fight, but the fights coming to them. So it's just a matter of time, I would say to people in the church. First of all, you need to learn this history, not all of it, none of us have mastered it. But learn enough of it that you know what you're talking about. And then make sure that your pastor is engaged in doing this, if he isn't go to him and asking to give him the materials, challenge him. If he won't engage, get out of there, go find a church where the pastor will engage, be a part of a congregation, that's going to make a difference. Now, granted, we want to preach the gospel, and we want people to be saved. But we also want to be salt and light. And you can't separate that you can't just say, we want to get people saved. But then that's the end of it. No, that's the beginning of it. That's not the end of it. And so they've got to be in a church where the pastor is going to engage and stand up against evil. The spiritual war is raging. It's whether or not we're going to be faithful and get involved. And if we're not, we're going to answer to the Lord for that. And in short term, we're going to probably answer here in America because the republic that we knew the republic that the framers founded is gone. Now, it still exists in some states, but it doesn't exist in New York, it doesn't exist in some of these states that have given up and the and they have gone left, and we better just recognize that that's where we are. And these people better engage Time is running out. It's running out. 33:29 Yeah. Now, let me go back to something real quick that you'd said you talked about the boot camp, but then you said there's a political aspect whether I want you want to go into it or not. Yeah, cuz I'm, 33:40 I'd be happy to, I believe that the Republic is gone. Now. I really, I believe the republic could be saved in some states. The union is too large to be governed by one government and we're too different. We are I believe irreconcilably divided. It is time for a political separation. I think the framers if they were to come back today, they would be amazed that we have one government governing over 300 million people. That's not the way it was originally designed. The states were sovereign. And the federal government had very limited responsibilities. The states were the ones that were most in charge today. It's the opposite. So you have one monolithic government in DC that's trying to control everything. Well, people in Oklahoma are very different from people in Massachusetts. You can't pass the same laws that people of Massachusetts want to murder preborn babies in Oklahoma. We want to save them. But we're being forced by a federal government that's out of control. So I think it's time for like minded states to stand up and say either you back off, or we're pulling out. I mean, it's just time and I don't mean a war. nobody's talking about shooting at people. You don't have to have a war to politically separate. It's happening. All over the world, Scotland nearly separated from Great Britain A few years ago, Great Britain just pulled out of the EU, Catalonia is working on separating from Spain, that the the right of free association is one of our rights from God. And the original states would have never joined the union if they thought they were stuck and couldn't get out, and would even be forced to go against their own religious beliefs. This is why Texas, for instance, insisted when they joined the union, that they remain a republic and could pull out at any time. This is why it's called the Republic of Texas. And they even put in their ratification papers that they could divide Texas up into as many as five states. That's in their agreement. That's it That's in their agreement. So it's time we can't be, we can live peaceably with people like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden, but you can't be under their government, not if you're a conservative, not your Christian, these people are Marxists. And to sit here and worship some nostalgic America that used to exist and go down with them, like going down with the Titanic is not only insane, it's a sin. It's a dereliction of duty. Thomas Jefferson even said in the Declaration of Independence, that when government ceases to do its primary function, the citizens have three steps that they can take, I call it DEF CON, three, two and one. They can either alter it, abolish it, or throw it off. But they not only have the right he says in the declaration to do that they have the duty to do that. We're there. I believe we're at DEF CON one. 36:41 Yeah. And you think about what, when you said that I was thinking about Okay, we had the Puritans or separatists. This effort is that what the pilgrims were that's where we're, that's where we're at. We're at the separatist place, getting away from England, get away and in America is at the same place to get away from this government that's in charge. That's exactly right. Yeah, exactly. And there, but there's nowhere to go. Yeah, well, you don't, there's not another country, we 37:11 don't have to go you pull out, you create a different government. If Jefferson was not saying did you have to go to some deserted island, he was saying you pull up the Declaration of Independence was a secession document, they were seceding from Great Britain, we celebrate it. It's what it was, they were breaking. In fact, he says when it becomes necessary to, to break the political bonds that have tied two peoples together, when it becomes necessary to do that. Sometimes that becomes necessary. And I believe we need to try to save the republic in as many states as we can. And I think there's about 25 or 26 states that would do it. It's time to do it. If we don't do it pretty soon, Gary, they're going to have is painted into a corner, it's going to be checkmate. And we're done. 37:57 Right. And if we're not standing up at this hour, then years down the road, when we have grandkids, they're gonna be wondering, what what were you doing doing during what were you 38:08 doing? Well, most of us won't because would be dead? Yeah. Like, they'll excuse? 38:13 Yeah. And the older I get the more I think, Well, you know, it's, it's not my problem, you know, but you bet it's your problem. It's definitely my problem. And you may have got to do that. And I think the calls are problem. Yeah, the call that you're putting out there for, for educating pastors and helping them along, and just waking up the church and waking up the people to understand where we really are. And I think looking back at our history is so, so important, you know, because we are repeating the history, and we are maybe too late. And only through and only through God can will we know in a few years, but we've got to do something 38:54 well, even even if it's too late, we got to go down swing and Gary. And again, when I use these terms, I'm not talking about shooting at people. I'm talking about fighting the good fight, the spiritual fight the political fight, that's what I'm talking about. 39:06 And it's important not to be compartmentalizes, what we'll get is was people will say, well, you need to share the gun. It's all about sharing the gospel. The world's coming to an end. Anyway, we know that the end of the story, so we just need to get the gospel spread. Well, that's true, but we still that's building the wall. Yeah, we still need to fight, right? 39:27 Here's what I say. I say if somebody believes that preach the freedom to preach the gospel as the most important thing, then surely the second most important thing is fighting for the right, the freedom to preach the gospel. If preaching the gospel is the most important thing, then the freedom to preach the gospel is the second 39:44 most important thing, and I encourage everybody to wake up, pay attention to what's going on around us. Pay attention to what's happening in Australia. Pay attention to what's happening in Canada. Pay attention what happened in Louisiana, with the pastor down there. What was his name spell, Tony. It's happening in our backyards, and we need to realize that we need to just be awake. You're awake. Oh, Dan, this has been Austin. I could talk for hours. Thank you, Gary. You've got a life to live out there. So 40:13 I'll be back again sometime. I'd love to do it. 40:15 Thanks again. It's been a pleasure. And I'll have all your show notes. So your website again, one more time. 40:21 Dan Fisher, b. r r.com. 40:24 And you got two books out there. Yes. 40:27 bringing back the black robe Regiment, and unlimited submission with a question mark. 40:32 I'll get those on the show, my friend. Appreciate it, sir. The late Pastor H.P. Gauldin, founding Pastor of Brightwood Baptist Church (1940) and Fairview Baptist Church (1960), both of Greensboro, NC, preached this message over the airwaves of the old WGBG, Greensboro, NC, which was at 1400 on the AM dial, during one of Brightwood's 9am Sunday Morning radio broadcasts, circa 1960. I am personally unaware of Brother Gauldin's ministerial whereabouts, either before or after the previously-mentioned twenty-year period. I'm also unsure if either of these churches exist today, in any way, shape, form or fashion. From growing up in Greensboro, I know they did in those days, but I've been gone for some time, therefore, the uncertainty. Nevertheless, let God's word preached by His man, in this classic, yet relevant message, help you, in this needed hour!
Episode SummaryThis episode was recorded at the tail end of the third major COVID lockdown in Ontario, Canada, and while other parts of Canada were also still under lockdown. This episode focuses on the ever increasing loss of liberty that is sweeping Canada as a result of continued COVID mania. We document how COVID has been used to justify suspension of the democratic process, increased surveillance, and the silencing and censoring of those in the Canadian medical establishment who dissent from the accepted narrative. Particular attention is given to the persecution of pastors, including James Coates, Arthur Pawlowski, Tim Stephens and Tobias Tissen. Finally, we discuss statements by medical experts Dr. Peter McCullough and Dr. Michael Yeadon, who suggest concerning theories about the endgame of this COVID madness, and we draw parallels to actual events that unfolded during WWII.Episode Timeline & Notes0:00:32 - Opening SegmentTwitter | "Trudeau describes the euphoria of getting a COVID vaccine, tells Canadians to shame their “crusty uncle who resists” into getting their shots.Trudeau gushes about receiving vaccine: ‘Getting that shot really was an amazing feeling' | LifesitenewsAre your parents hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine? Wynton Marsalis joined us for Behind The Note Podcast today! We talked many things including leadership, building a team, and turning vision into reality. Rate Behind The Note Podcast on the platform you're using right now to read this script and to listen to the show. Press Play. Enjoy. Share. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is Wynton's Bio straight from his website: Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He is the world’s first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz. By creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new music for quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras, tap dance to ballet, Wynton has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers. The Early Years Wynton was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1961, to Ellis and Dolores Marsalis, the second of six sons. At an early age he exhibited a superior aptitude for music and a desire to participate in American culture. At age eight Wynton performed traditional New Orleans music in the Fairview Baptist Church band led by legendary banjoist Danny Barker, and at 14 he performed with the New Orleans Philharmonic. During high school Wynton performed with the New Orleans Symphony Brass Quintet, New Orleans Community Concert Band, New Orleans Youth Orchestra, New Orleans Symphony, various jazz bands and with the popular local funk band, the Creators. At age 17 Wynton became the youngest musician ever to be admitted to Tanglewood’s Berkshire Music Center. Despite his youth, he was awarded the school’s prestigious Harvey Shapiro Award for outstanding brass student. Wynton moved to New York City to attend Juilliard in 1979. When he began to pick up gigs around town, the grapevine began to buzz. In 1980 Wynton seized the opportunity to join the Jazz Messengers to study under master drummer and bandleader Art Blakey. It was from Blakey that Wynton acquired his concept for bandleading and for bringing intensity to each and every performance. In the years to follow Wynton performed with Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sweets Edison, Clark Terry, John Lewis, Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and countless other jazz legends. Wynton assembled his own band in 1981 and hit the road, performing over 120 concerts every year for 15 consecutive years. With the power of his superior musicianship, the infectious sound of his swinging bands and an exhaustive series of performances and music workshops, Marsalis rekindled widespread interest in jazz throughout the world. Wynton embraced the jazz lineage to garner recognition for the older generation of overlooked jazz musicians and prompted the re-issue of jazz catalog by record companies worldwide. He also inspired a renaissance that attracted a new generation of fine young talent to jazz. A look at the more distinguished jazz musicians of today reveals numerous students of Marsalis’ workshops: James Carter, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Harry Connick Jr., Nicholas Payton, Eric Reed and Eric Lewis, to name a few. Classical Career Wynton’s love of the music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and others drove him to pursue a career in classical music as well. He recorded the Haydn, Hummel and Leopold Mozart trumpet concertos at age 20. His debut recording received glorious reviews and won the Grammy Award® for “Best Classical Soloist with an Orchestra.” Marsalis went on to record 10 additional classical records, all to critical acclaim. Wynton performed with leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Pops, The Cleveland Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra and London’s Royal Philharmonic, working with an eminent group of conductors including: Leppard, Dutoit, Maazel, Slatkin, Salonen and Tilson-Thomas. A timeless highlight of Wynton’s classical career is his collaboration with soprano Kathleen Battle on their recording Baroque Duet. Famed classical trumpeter Maurice André praised Wynton as “potentially the greatest trumpeter of all time.” Record Production To date Wynton has produced over 80 records which have sold over seven million copies worldwide including three Gold Records. His recordings consistently incorporate a heavy emphasis on the blues, an inclusive approach to all forms of jazz from New Orleans to modern jazz, persistent use of swing as the primary rhythm, an embrace of the American popular song, individual and collective improvisation, and a panoramic vision of compositional styles from dittys to dynamic call and response patterns (both within the rhythm section and between the rhythm section and horn players). Always swinging, Marsalis blows his trumpet with a clear tone and a unique, virtuosic style derived from an encyclopedic range of trumpet techniques. The Composer Wynton Marsalis is a prolific and inventive composer. The dance community embraced Wynton’s inventiveness by awarding him with commissions to create new music for Garth Fagan (Citi Movement-Griot New York & Lighthouse/Lightening Rod), Peter Martins at the New York City Ballet (Jazz: Six Syncopated Movements and Them Twos), Twyla Tharp with the American Ballet Theatre (Jump Start), Judith Jamison at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (Sweet Release and Here…Now), and Savion Glover (Petite Suite and Spaces). Marsalis collaborated with the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society in 1995 to compose the string quartet At The Octoroon Balls, and again in 1998 to create a response to Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale with his composition A Fiddler’s Tale. With his collection of standards arrangements, Wynton reconnected audiences with the beauty of the American popular song (Standard Time Volumes I-VI). He re-introduced the joy in New Orleans jazz with his recording The Majesty Of The Blues. He extended the jazz musician’s interplay with the blues in Levee Low Moan, Thick In The South and other blues recordings. With Citi Movement, In This House On This Morning and Blood On The Fields, Wynton invented a fresh conception for extended form compositions. His inventive interplay with melody, harmony and rhythm, along with his lyrical voicing and tonal coloring assert new possibilities for the jazz ensemble. In his dramatic oratorio Blood On The Fields, Wynton draws upon the blues, work songs, chants, call and response, spirituals, New Orleans jazz, Ellingtonesque orchestral arrangements and Afro-Caribbean rhythms; and he uses Greek chorus-style recitations to move the work along. The New York Times Magazine said the work “marked the symbolic moment when the full heritage of the line, Ellington through Mingus, was extended into the present.” The San Francisco Examiner stated, “Marsalis’ orchestral arrangements are magnificent. Duke Ellington’s shadings and themes come and go but Marsalis’ free use of dissonance, counter rhythms and polyphonics is way ahead of Ellington’s mid-century era.” Wynton extended his achievements in Blood On The Fields with All Rise, an epic composition for big band, gospel choir, and symphony orchestra – a classic work of high art – which was performed by the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Kurt Masur along with the Morgan State University Choir and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (December 1999). Marsalis collaborated with Ghanaian master drummer Yacub Addy to create Congo Square, a groundbreaking composition combining elegant harmonies from America’s jazz tradition with fundamental rituals in African percussion and vocals (2006). For the anniversary of the Abyssinian Baptist Church’s 200th year of service, Marsalis blended Baptist church choir cadences with blues accents and big band swing rhythms to compose Abyssinian 200: A Celebration, which was performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Abyssinian’s 100 voice choir before packed houses in New York City (May 2008). In the fall of 2009 the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra premiered Marsalis’ composition Blues Symphony. By infusing blues and ragtime rhythms with symphonic orchestrations Wynton creates a fresh type of enjoyment of classical repertoire. Employing complex layers of collective improvisation, Marsalis further expanded his repertoire for symphony orchestra with Swing Symphony, premiered by the renowned Berlin Philharmonic in June 2010, creating new possibilities for audiences to experience a symphony orchestra swing. Marsalis’ rich and expansive body of music for the ages places him among the world’s most significant composers. Television, Radio & Literary In the fall of 1995 Wynton launched two major broadcast events. In October PBS premiered Marsalis On Music, an educational television series on jazz and classical music. The series was written and hosted by Marsalis and was enjoyed by millions of parents and children. Writers distinguished Marsalis On Music with comparisons to Leonard Bernstein’s celebrated Young People’s Concerts of the 50s and 60s. That same month National Public Radio aired the first of Marsalis’ 26-week series entitled Making the Music. These entertaining and insightful radio shows were the first full exposition of jazz music in American broadcast history. Wynton’s radio and television series were awarded the most prestigious distinction in broadcast journalism, the George Foster Peabody Award. The Spirit of New Orleans, Wynton’s poetic tribute to the New Orleans Saints’ first Super Bowl victory (Super Bowl XLIV) received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Feature (2011). From 2012 to 2014 Wynton served as cultural correspondent for CBS News, writing and presenting features for CBS This Morning on an array topics from Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Louis Armstrong to Juke Joints, BBQ, the Quarterback & Conducting and Thankfulness. Marsalis has written six books: Sweet Swing Blues on the Road, Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life, To a Young Musician: Letters from the Road, Jazz ABZ (an A to Z collection of poems celebrating jazz greats), Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life and Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! a sonic adventure for kids. Awards and Accolades Wynton Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards® in grand style. In 1983 he became the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards® for both jazz and classical records; and he repeated the distinction by winning jazz and classical Grammys® again in 1984. Today Wynton is the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards® in five consecutive years (1983-1987). Honorary degrees have been conferred upon Wynton by over 25 of America’s leading academic institutions including Columbia, Harvard, Howard, Princeton and Yale (see Exhibit A). Elsewhere Wynton was honored with the Louis Armstrong Memorial Medal and the Algur H. Meadows Award for Excellence in the Arts. He was inducted into the American Academy of Achievement and was dubbed an Honorary Dreamer by the “I Have a Dream Foundation.” The New York Urban League awarded Wynton with the Frederick Douglass Medallion for distinguished leadership and the American Arts Council presented him with the Arts Education Award. Time magazine selected Wynton as one of America’s most promising leaders under age 40 in 1995, and in 1996 Time celebrated Marsalis again as one of America’s 25 most influential people. In November 2005 Wynton Marsalis received The National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the United States Government. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan proclaimed Wynton Marsalis an international ambassador of goodwill for the Unites States by appointing him a UN Messenger of Peace (2001). In 1997 Wynton Marsalis became the first jazz musician ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his epic oratorio Blood On The Fields. During the five preceding decades the Pulitzer Prize jury refused to recognize jazz musicians and their improvisational music, reserving this distinction for classical composers. In the years following Marsalis’ award, the Pulitzer Prize for Music has been awarded posthumously to Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. In a personal note to Wynton, Zarin Mehta wrote: “I was not surprised at your winning the Pulitzer Prize for Blood On The Fields. It is a broad, beautifully painted canvas that impresses and inspires. It speaks to us all … I’m sure that, somewhere in the firmament, Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong and legions of others are smiling down on you.” Wynton’s creativity has been celebrated throughout the world. He won the Netherlands’ Edison Award and the Grand Prix Du Disque of France. The Mayor of Vitoria, Spain, awarded Wynton with the city’s Gold Medal – its most coveted distinction. Britain’s senior conservatoire, the Royal Academy of Music, granted Mr. Marsalis Honorary Membership, the Academy’s highest decoration for a non-British citizen (1996). The city of Marciac, France, erected a bronze statue in his honor. The French Ministry of Culture appointed Wynton the rank of Knight in the Order of Arts and Literature and in the fall of 2009 Wynton received France’s highest distinction, the insignia Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, an honor that was first awarded by Napoleon Bonaparte. French Ambassador, His Excellency Pierre Vimont, captured the evening best with his introduction: “We are gathered here tonight to express the French government’s recognition of one of the most influential figures in American music, an outstanding artist, in one word: a visionary… I want to stress how important your work has been for both the American and the French. I want to put the emphasis on the main values and concerns that we all share: the importance of education and transmission of culture from one generation to the other, and a true commitment to the profoundly democratic idea that lies in jazz music. I strongly believe that, for you, jazz is more than just a musical form. It is tradition, it is part of American history and culture and life. To you, jazz is the sound of democracy. And from this democratic nature of jazz derives openness, generosity, and universality.” Jazz at Lincoln Center In 1987 Wynton Marsalis co-founded a jazz program at Lincoln Center. In July 1996, due to its significant success, Jazz at Lincoln Center was installed as new constituent of Lincoln Center, equal in stature with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and New York City Ballet – a historic moment for jazz as an art form and for Lincoln Center as a cultural institution. In October 2004, with the assistance of a dedicated Board and staff, Marsalis opened Frederick P. Rose Hall, the world’s first institution for jazz. The complex contains three state-of-the-art performance spaces (including the first concert hall designed specifically for jazz) along with recording, broadcast, rehearsal and educational facilities. Jazz at Lincoln Center has become a preferred venue for New York jazz fans and a destination for travelers from throughout the world. Wynton presently serves as Managing and Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Under Wynton’s leadership, Jazz at Lincoln Center has developed an international agenda presenting rich and diverse programming that includes concerts, debates, film forums, dances, television and radio broadcasts, and educational activities. Education In 2011 Harvard University President Drew Faust invited Wynton to enrich the cultural life of the University community. Wynton responded by creating a 6 lecture series which he delivered over the ensuing 3 years entitled Hidden In Plain View: Meanings in American Music, with the goal of fostering a stronger appreciation for the arts and a higher level of cultural literacy in academia. Giving Back Wynton Marsalis has devoted his life to uplifting populations worldwide with the egalitarian spirit of jazz. And while his body of work is enough to fill two lifetimes, Wynton continues to work tirelessly to contribute even more to our world’s cultural landscape. It has been said that he is an artist for whom greatness is not just possible, but inevitable. The most extraordinary dimension of Wynton Marsalis, however, is not his accomplishments but his character. It is the lesser-known part of this man who finds endless ways to give of himself. It is the person who waited in an empty parking lot for one full hour after a concert in Baltimore, waiting for a single student to return from home with his horn for a trumpet lesson. It is the citizen who personally funds scholarships for students and covers medical expenses for those in need. Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, Wynton organized the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Concert and raised over $3 million for musicians and cultural organizations impacted by the hurricane. At the same time, he assumed a leadership role on the Bring Back New Orleans Cultural Commission where he was instrumental in shaping a master plan that would revitalize the city’s cultural base. Wynton Marsalis has selflessly donated his time and talent to non-profit organizations throughout the country to raise money to meet the many needs within our society. From My Sister’s Place (a shelter for battered women) to Graham Windham (a shelter for homeless children), the Children’s Defense Fund, Amnesty International, the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute, Food For All Seasons (a food bank for the elderly and disadvantaged), Very Special Arts (an organization that provides experiences in dance, drama, literature, and music for individuals with physical and mental disabilities) to the Newark Boys Chorus School (a full-time academic music school for disadvantaged youths) and many, many more – Wynton responded enthusiastically to the call for service. It is Wynton Marsalis’ commitment to the improvement of life for all people that portrays the best of his character and humanity. In 2011 Wynton joined with Harvard University President, Drew Faust to present a series of 6 lectures to the student body over 3 years. The series entitles Hidden In Plain View: Hidden Meanings in American Music was developed to foster a stronger appreciation of the arts and a higher level of cultural literacy amount college students.
If there is one thing that kills any sort of gospel emphasis or progress in true sanctification, it is legalism. Of course no one would even identify themselves as a legalist, it is always that person to the right of me, the one whose standards are stricter than mine that has that issue. Yet the problem is everywhere, especially in my own heart. We all struggle with the temptation to think that my standing with God is based upon my own striving and effort. In this podcast, I’ve asked my old college friend Brian McLaughlin (Pastor of the Fairview Baptist Church in Decatur, AL) to talk about identifying legalism and then overcoming those legalistic tendencies that sometimes tempt us to take pride in ourselves.

Fast Talk with Vickey Wachtel with Co-Host Courtney Barker Guest James White James White has a varied background in business and administration. I am Veteran of the US Navy. While on active duty I served at a number of shore and sea commands as a Navy Corpsman specializing in laboratory medicine. While running and operating laboratories and blood banks, the responsibility of maintaining meticulous records, ensuring all military and civilian (ie. FDA and JCAHO) compliance, and supply and budgetary concerns fell on me. After several injuries forced me out of active service I earned his degree in Pastoral Studies and served as an assistant at Fairview Baptist Church for about 1 1/2 years until the death of the Senior Pastor. I then helped a friend start a new indirect cell phone retailer in Virginia. With Johnny and I being the first 2 employee, I helped build Cellular Solutions to a company of 7 store with a net worth of over $5M in a period of just 3 1/2 years. Shortly after finding myself in Texas, I ended up serving as VP of Sales and Marketing for Accent. I then had the opportunity to reach for the American dream of being a business owner and jumped in with both feet. Now I am the CEO of Coventry Business Solutions Coventry Business Solutions chose its name for a very particular reason. It completely describes our philosophy and our services. We believe that in the business world time is money. So if you are wasting time, then you are losing money. Therefore, Coventry Business Solutions came up with a bright idea...why not put together the services that companies and business owners need in one company? That saves companies and business owners time and money by not having to find 4, 5, or more different people to service all of their business needs.
