What happens when we step outside the boundaries of the physical world?Psychiatrist Bernard Beitman and neuroscientist Marina Weiler dive deep into the mysteries of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near-death experiences (NDEs), astral encounters, and the possibility of life beyond the body.Pre-order Dr. Beitman's newest book "Life-Changing Synchronicities: A Doctor's Coincidences and Serendipities" at Simon & Schuster, Barnes and Noble, Inner Traditions, Amazon, Books-a-Million, Bookshop.org (May 2025).Marina shares her personal brushes with the paranormal—including poltergeist-like events and vivid dreams of the departed—even though she has never had an OBE herself. Bernard recounts his own surreal journey to the "coincidence control office" during an out-of-body episode. Together, they explore how these extraordinary events can transform our perspectives, reduce fear of death, and inspire profound life changes. Can we meet others—or even non-human entities—while traveling the astral plane? Is consciousness truly separate from the brain? Join this fascinating conversation as science and the mystical collide, and discover how synchronicity, intention, and expanded awareness can reshape our understanding of reality.Marina Weiler is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), University of Virginia. A trained neuroscientist with expertise in neuroimaging, brain stimulation, and consciousness studies, she investigates experiences that transcend traditional physical explanation. Her research has earned recognition from CAPES (Brazil), the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, the NIH, the Templeton World Charity Foundation, and the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Research.

For those who have listened to me on Small Town over the years, you know I always reference the Gateway Program, developed through the work of Robert Monroe and the Monroe Institute in Virginia. Monroe believed that by using specific sound frequencies and meditation techniques, he could leave his physical body and travel via a second body, or spirit body, to other realities removed from the physical world — places unbounded by time or death. The Gateway Program is a series of audio exercises using frequencies, including binaural beat hemispheric synchronization exercises, developed by Robert A. Monroe to achieve expanded states of consciousness. Through these courses, I was able to dissociate from myself and connect with spirit beings from the other side through the combined hemi-sync frequencies and meditational exercises. My guest, psychologist and author Candice Sanderson, joins me for this episode of the Small Town Tales Podcast to discuss her out-of-body travels, her experience with the Monroe Institute, and her book, The Reluctant Messenger: Tales from Beyond Belief.About Candice SandersonIn August 2013, Candice Sanderson began receiving messages from nonphysical realms, changing her pragmatic life as a psychologist. Since that remarkable transformation, multiple agencies have studied her newfound skills: researchers from the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia, the Institute for the Awakened Mind, Monroe Institute, and a Harvard study funded by the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS).Sanderson's international award-winning books, The Reluctant Messenger, The Reluctant Messenger Returns, and her series of short books called From the Reluctant Messenger, chronicle some of her out-of-body travels and extraordinary connections with non-human intelligences. All of her books have been #1 Best-Sellers on Amazon in multiple categories, and over 10,000 copies have sold across the globe. Where to find the Candice:Website: www.CandiceSanderson.com About CL ThomasC.L. Researchers at the University of Virginia have investigated children's reports of memories of previous lives for nearly sixty years, studying more than 2,500 cases from around the world. In many cases, a deceased individual has been identified whose life matches the details given by the child. Common features in the cases include a child talking about a past life at a very early age, behaviors that appear connected to that life such as phobias related to the mode of death, and sometimes even birthmarks or birth defects that correspond to wounds the previous person suffered. Our conversation will highlight Dr. Tucker's research over the past 20 years, including details of some of his most interesting cases. His work provides persuasive evidence that some children do, in fact, possess memories of previous lives and we will look at how this phenomenon changes our understanding of consciousness and what it means to be human. Dr. Jim Tucker is a child psychiatrist at the University of Virginia, where he is the Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. He is the Director of UVA's Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), and he is continuing the work of Ian Stevenson with children who report memories of previous lives

He is founder and president of Associated Clinicians of Virginia, which provides psychotherapy and organizational development services to individuals and businesses. Dr. Pasciuti is chairman of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at The Monroe Institute, in Faber, Virginia, and he collaborates on research related to NDEs, psychic phenomena, and the survival of consciousness at the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), a research unit of the department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine. He is author of Chrysalis Crisis, How Life's Ordeals Can Lead to Personal and Spiritual Transformation. (Rainbow Ridge books, July 2019) In his seminal book Chrysalis Crisis: How Life's Ordeals Can Lead to Personal & Spiritual Transformation he explains how you can use your life ordeal to bring about personal and spiritual growth. Like the butterfly that struggles to free its wings from the chrysalis cocoon, it can be a struggle to let go of the lingering effects of a crisis. But just as the butterfly's struggle to release its wings also strengthens them for flight, the struggle for growth after a crisis can contribute to personal transformation, and strengthen your flight through life. Such outcomes are possible when ten key areas of human growth are developed. These ten key areas cover a broad range of human functioning. They include your physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development; your identity, intimacy, and existential growth; and your intuitive and spiritual evolution. Chrysalis Crisis examines each of the ten keys areas through the use of case examples drawn from clients in Pasciuti' s clinical practice, ordeals from people close to him, and his own crisis.

The Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine is a fascinating place. Founded in 1967 by Dr. Ian Stevenson—originally as the Division of Personality Studies—its mission is “the scientific empirical investigation of phenomena that suggest that currently accepted scientific assumptions and theories about the nature of mind or consciousness, and its relation to matter, may be incomplete.” Other universities across the country are also approving University-Sanctioned Paranormal Research Projects.  Is this a new trend or has the emergence of paranormal reality shows brought these studies "into the light?" Join us tonight as we uncover and share our findings.
