Biological oceanographer John Ryan joins Mongabay's podcast to discuss his team's multiyear study that examined vocalizations of baleen whales, including blue (Balaenoptera musculus), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), and how this science is critical for understanding their feeding habits, and thus informing their conservation. The study found that these whales' songs rise and fall with their food supply, which provides valuable insights into how changing ocean conditions can affect their health and guide management measures. “Some of the research we did tracking the movement and ecology of blue whales helped our sanctuary [to] act on this long-term concern about ship strikes, and to join a program that is called Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies,” the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) researcher says. Modernity is dying within and around us, and we need to face that death with courage and compassion. Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti, author of Hospicing Modernity, joins us. Highlights include: How her mixed Indigenous and German heritage in Brazil exposed her to a complex mix of love and violence, deepening her understanding of how socialization and education can perpetuate harmful relationships; Why the ‘house of modernity', which is built on a foundation of humanity's separation from the rest of nature, is structured to ultimately fail; Why we need to ‘hospice modernity' both within and around us, without feeling overwhelmed or rushing for quick fixes, while making space for something much larger to emerge; Why we need to compost the ‘pedestal' sense of agency from modernity and its elevated sense of certainty and subject-object relationships and embrace a more intersubjective mycelial sense of agency; Why ‘outgrowing modernity' will require us to prepare for a ‘well-died death' and a greater sense of emotional sobriety, relational maturity, intellectual discernment, and interspecies and intergenerational responsibility. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. Today we're reflecting on the profound theme of humanity and, 'Friendship Between Species.' As we navigate through times of loss, such as the passing of a beloved animal friend, we find solace in the enduring bonds we share with animals. Research by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) focuses on the significant relationships between humans and animals. These bonds provide emotional support and improve mental health, especially in challenging times (eg Covid puppies). Interspecies friendships can bring comfort and joy, offering emotional companionship that sometimes transcends human relationships. Animals can alleviate feelings of sadness and provide a sense of purpose and love. The grieving process following the loss of a beloved animal friend, like a cherished horse is a long one, as animals give love and devotion in its purest form. This episode is dedicated to Hamasa, a beautiful Arabian horse, my favourite on Instagram. Thank you for tuning in. Love Always, Amber

There's a world in which a group of mountain gorillas in Rwanda might one day be able to pay for their own protection. It involves a new financial model with an AI-powered digital wallet and data that's provided by the gorillas themselves, as well as the people who live and work around them. All of this might sound far-fetched, but the man behind this project has brought other unlikely ideas to life. Jonathan Ledgard is a futurist thinker on risk, nature, and advanced technology in Africa and emerging markets, as well as a pioneer of drone delivery and interspecies money. We hear his story in the latest installment of our oral history project. We Meet: Jonathan Ledgard, CEO of TehanuCredits:SHIFT is produced by Jennifer Strong and Emma Cillekens. There's been a lot of chatter in the press lately about advances in interspecies communication and our soon-to-arrive ability to translate what our non-human neighbors are saying. That's quite a breakthrough, considering how much trouble I often have understanding what other HUMANS are saying. But there's another factor: even though AI, machine learning and large language models give us extraordinarily powerful abilities to analyze unimaginably large volumes of data, and to perhaps decode non-human communications, I'm not convinced we should. Have a listen.
In this podcast episode, Frances Fox delves into her experiences as a trained remote viewer from a secret government program exploring human potential and psychic abilities. She discusses the limitations imposed by our reliance on physical communication and the untapped potential of telepathy. Frances emphasizes the importance of becoming spiritually sophisticated to navigate the current paradigm shift, arguing that many societal norms and beliefs hinder our true abilities. She also highlights interspecies communication and the relevance of telepathy in understanding extraterrestrial messages. The episode calls for a deeper self-reliance and spiritual awakening to face the evolving challenges of our time. fWotD Episode 2440: Communication Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Tuesday, 9 January 2024 is Communication.Communication is usually understood to be the transmission of information. Its precise definition is disputed and there are disagreements about whether unintentional or failed transmissions are included and whether communication not only transmits meaning but also creates it. Models of communication are simplified overviews of its main components and their interactions. Many models include the idea that a source uses a coding system to express information in the form of a message. The message is sent through a channel to a receiver who has to decode it to understand it. The main field of inquiry investigating communication is called communication studies.A common way to classify communication is by whether information is exchanged between humans, members of other species, or non-living entities such as computers. For human communication, a central contrast is between verbal and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication involves the exchange of messages in linguistic form, including spoken and written messages as well as sign language. Non-verbal communication happens without the use of a linguistic system, for example, using body language, touch, and facial expressions. Another distinction is between interpersonal communication, which happens between distinct persons, and intrapersonal communication, which is communication with oneself. Communicative competence is the ability to communicate well and applies to the skills of formulating messages and understanding them.Non-human forms of communication include animal and plant communication. Researchers in this field often refine their definition of communicative behavior by including the criteria that observable responses are present and that the participants benefit from the exchange. Animal communication is used in areas like courtship and mating, parent-offspring relations, navigation, and self-defense. Communication through chemicals is particularly important for the relatively immobile plants. For example, maple trees release so-called volatile organic compounds into the air to warn other plants of a herbivore attack. Most communication takes place between members of the same species. The reason is that its purpose is usually some form of cooperation, which is not as common between different species. Interspecies communication happens mainly in cases of symbiotic relationships. For instance, many flowers use symmetrical shapes and distinctive colors to signal to insects where nectar is located. Humans engage in interspecies communication when interacting with pets.Human communication has a long history and how people exchange information has changed over time. These changes were usually triggered by the development of new communication technologies. Examples are the invention of writing systems, the development of mass printing, the use of radio and television, and the invention of the internet. The technological advances also led to new forms of communication, such as the exchange of data between computers. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Tuesday, 9 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Communication on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Amy Neural.
“She's more than just a dog, she's an amazing parallel universe..” Thank you for joining me today! And if you are listening to this around the time it is released, Happy New Year! As we wind up one year and begin a new one, I thought it was the perfect time to release the first episode of the Mystic Dog Mama Spotlight Series, where I shine the spotlight on other mystic dog mamas and their stories with their dogs. My very first guest in this series is such a beautiful and amazing soul, and I'm so excited to introduce you to her, and her former paraplegic rescue dog, Edie. G.G. Silverman is an award-winning author of fiction and poetry, as well as a visual artist, educator, and writing coach. Her writing has recently been shortlisted for the 2023 Dzanc Short Story Collection Prize, and her manuscript, The Blood Year Daughter, was recently named a finalist for the 2023 St Lawrence Book Awards. GG also describes herself as disabled, neurodivergent, and the daughter of immigrants, all of which have informed her path. When not obsessing over her writing, art, or her dog, G.G. enjoys yoga, gardening, cooking, and traipsing through the evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest, searching for magic and medicine. In this conversation, GG and I talk about the role of everyday creativity in the spiritual paths we are walking with our dogs. We also explore the ways in which our dogs invite us to let in more magic into the everyday, and ask us how we can become even better versions of ourselves. GG and I share a love of the mystical, and have both embraced the path of the hedgewitch - a path which seeks the magic and medicine in everything we encounter, including belly rubs. GG talks about finding love notes from the universe, and it is my hope that as we enter this new year, that this conversation is one such love note for you, reminding you that magic is, indeed, everywhere, and your dog is right by your side, helping sniff it out! Want to share your story in the spotlight series, or have suggestions for another incredible mystic dog mama that you'd like me to feature? Message me on Instagram @mysticdogmama! Please subscribe to the podcast, and let me know what other topics you'd like me to cover to help you live your best Mystic Dog Mama (or Papa!) life with your own pup! Finally, as we close out 2023, I hope you take GG's word of the year, “Shine,” and carry it forward into 2024 in your corner of the world! We can never have too much light. Wishing you a wonderful and happy new year, filled with loads of reasons to celebrate! Until next time! To connect with G.G. please visit https://www.ggsilverman.com. “I really felt like I turned into a bird. The way I was playing was changed. Like I played the way nobody would play a clarinet unless they had spent weeks listening to nightingales.” – David Rothenberg David Rothenberg is, amongst many other things, an interspecies musician. That means he makes music with whales and birds and insects and even with many plants and animals that reside in ponds. He's also a writer, he's written many books, including Why Birds Sing, Whale Music and Nightingales in Berlin, which was also made into a film. And he is a professor of philosophy and music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In Indifference: On the Praxis of Interspecies Being (Duke UP, 2023), Naisargi N. Davé examines the complex worlds of animalists and animalism in India. Through ethnographic fieldwork with animal healers, animal activists, farmers, laborers, transporters, and animals themselves, and moving across animal shelters and dairy farms to city streets and abattoirs, Davé shows how human-animal relations often manifest through care and violence. More surprisingly, what Davé also finds animating interspecies relationality in India is an ethic of indifference---that is, an orientation of mutual regard rather than curiosity, love, desire, or animus. For Davé, indifference is a respect for others in their otherness that allows human and nonhuman animals to flourish in immanent encounters. Indifference, then, becomes the basis for an interspecies ethics and a method of care and practice in everyday life. With indifference, Davé describes both a mode of relationality in the world and a scholarly approach: seeking what is possible when we approach ethico-political concepts with indifference rather than commitment or antagonism. Moments of indifference, Davé contends, offer the promise of otherwise worlds. In this episode, I share our recent quick updates and discount codes for our parrot pals! Why is it important for parrots to fly and be able to use their wings? And what about free flight training? What about predators, and what are parrot predators? Can interspecies relationships exist between a parrot and a predator? I always get asked about dog and bird relationships, so I break it down in this episode!
The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life
In this episode we grapple with the questions, Can you ever really be in a consensual relationship with a being who depends on you for food? How do white supremacy culture and patriarchy show up in horsemanship? What does non-coercive horsemanship look and feel like? If you've read my book, The Spirited Kitchen, or you've been around my work for a while, you know that I come from a long line of horse people - a lineage that wends its way from southern Alberta and rodeo culture to the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s where my wayback people bred, trained, and worked Highland ponies to labour in the coal mines and to build railroads. It's been a long and complicated relationship between my family and horses. I am the first generation in as far back as we can remember to not have horses in my life on an everyday basis. It's a profound source of grief for me. What has also been a source of grief is that for many of the problems I've supported my child through, (if you don't know, I have a 19 year old with autism, ADHD, and mental and physical health challenges), the thing that seems to work best is time outside the city with horses. And this is where my next guest comes in… Alexa Linton is an osteopathic practitioner with 15 years of manual therapy and energy work under her belt. She also works with animals using kinesiology, cranial sacral therapy, and intuitive communication. She also helps humans navigate pet death. As a horse steward, trainer and healer, Alexa has seen and experienced a lot of changes in the industry over the years but there is much further to go in uncoupling from systems of dominance. Her course, The Whole Horse Apprenticeship, and her show, The Whole Horse Podcast, are places of refuge for horsey people who no longer feel comfortable with coercive horsemanship. In this week's episode, we have a return guest to the podcast. Ruth Catlow has taken the amazing work she did in lockdown and held live festivals in the park where people get to become one of the seven core species: a dog, a Canada goose (just visiting!) a tree, grass… and, yes, a stag beetle. What they're not being, are people. So they're looking at the world through new eyes, hearing it with new ears, smelling, tasting, sensing in all ways - and the whole experience of what it is to live in this place as home, instead of just dropping in…becomes deeper, and more complex and more alive. And then each of the species can put forward ideas for the Interspecies Treaty of Finsbury Park which will make it a much better place for everyone - including the people. And then - because Ruth's enthusiasm and expertise range widely over the ways things can be made more fair and equitable, as well as work better, she's designed the app that allows a much fairer voting system, so the people-become-MoreThanHumans can vote on the seven ideas put forward for the Treaty in ways that allows more nuance than simply ranking them. This last became a whole other hour of conversation on voting systems and how we can create a decent democracy - so that's the bonus... well worth a listen! In this episode, Roy and Phil have a discussion with David Ian Howe! David is an archaeologist, artist, comedian, content creator, and educator who is particularly passionate about ethnocynology – the study of the relationship between humans and dogs. We discuss everything from the process of the domestication of dogs, to the value of interspecies interactions, to some of David's influences as a creator and educator (shout out Steve Irwin, Dave Chappelle, etc.). This episode is a bit of a deviation from our usual herp-focused content, but remains relevant to our typical subject matter and admittedly has plenty of herp discussion as well. Have a listen! David Rothenberg is a writer, philosopher, ecologist, and musician, speaking out for nature in all aspects of his diverse work. He investigates the musicality of animals and the role of nature in philosophy, with a particular interest in understanding other species by making music with them. As a professor of philosophy and music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he “teaches engineers nonquantifiable things.” He is also an acclaimed composer and jazz clarinetist known for his integration of world music with improvisation and electronics. Originally intending to be a scientist, music pulled Rothenberg away during his high school years – ultimately becoming the modality through which he would explore nature and deep ecology. Looking back at those high school years of the 1970s, Rothenberg told The New York Times, "I was influenced by saxophonist Paul Winter's Common Ground album, which had his own compositions with whale and bird sounds mixed in. That got me interested in using music to learn more about the natural world." As an undergraduate at Harvard, Rothenberg created his own major to combine music with communication. He traveled in Europe after graduation, playing jazz clarinet. Listening to the recorded song of a hermit thrush, he heard structure that reminded him of a Miles Davis solo. Because of Rothenberg's study of animal song and his experimental interactions with animal music, he is often called an "interspecies musician." He is said to "explore the sounds of all manner of living things as both an environmental philosopher and jazz musician." Rothenberg's book Why Birds Sing: A Journey into the Mystery of Bird Song (Basic Books 2005) was inspired by an impromptu duet in March 2000 with a laughingthrush at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. A CD accompanying the book also featured Rothenberg's duet with an Australian lyrebird. The book served as the basis for a 2006 feature-length BBC documentary of the same name. His next book, Thousand Mile Song (Basic Books 2008), reflects similar curiosity about whale sounds considered as music, from which both scientific and artistic insights emerge. It was turned into a film for French television. Philip Hoare of The London Telegraph said of the book, "while Rothenberg's madcap mission to play jazz to the whales seems as crazy as Captain Ahab's demented hunt for the great White Whale, it is sometimes such obsessions that reveal inner truths...I find myself more than a little sympathetic to the author's faintly bonkers but undoubtedly stimulating intent: to push at the barriers between human history and natural history." His book Survival of the Beautiful: Art, Science and Evolution (Bloomsbury Press 2011) was described by the journal Nature as exploring the theme that beauty is not random but is intrinsic to life—and that evolution proceeds by sumptuousness, not by utility alone. His remarkable output in books is matched by his creative output in other areas. As a composer and jazz clarinetist, Rothenberg has sixteen CDs out under his own name over the past 30 years. His 2020 releases include In the Wake of Memories and They Say Humans Exist, named best jazz album of the year by Stereo+ Magazine in Norway. He has performed or recorded with Peter Gabriel, Pauline Oliveros, Ray Phiri and Suzanne Vega. As a musician, Rothenberg tries to blend the indigenous energy of the world's primal music with the exploratory spirit of improvisation. He has studied jazz clarinet professionally, as well as Tibetan ritual wind music in Nepal and folk music in Norway. Since 2014, Rothenberg has been an Ambassador of the international non-governmental humanitarian mission, the Dolphin Embassy, participating in non-invasive research of the possibilities of free dolphins and whales – playing music for them. In 2017, the Dolphin Embassy released the full-length documentary Intraterrestrial, which received awards from international film festivals. The film's soundtrack features music by Rothenberg. Links to his extensive work, global press coverage, and extended recognition can be found on his website. Please join us in conversation with this remarkable philosopher and interspecies musician who combines art and science to make nature come alive in remarkable ways!

Irish vegan studies are poised for increasing relevance as climate change threatens the legitimacy and longevity of animal agriculture and widespread health problems related to animal product consumption disrupt long held nutritional ideologies. Already a top producer of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, Ireland has committed to expanding animal agriculture despite impending crisis. The nexus of climate change, public health, and animal welfare present a challenge to the hegemony of the Irish state and neoliberal European governance. Efforts to resist animal rights and environmentalism highlight the struggle to sustain economic structures of inequality in a society caught between a colonialist past and a globalized future. Animals in Irish Society: Interspecies Oppression and Vegan Liberation in Britain's First Colony (SUNY Press, 2021) explores the vegan Irish epistemology, one that can be traced along its history of animism, agrarianism, ascendency, adaptation, and activism. From its zoomorphic pagan roots to its legacy of vegetarianism, Ireland has been more receptive to the interests of other animals than is currently acknowledged. More than a land of "meat" and potatoes, Ireland is a relevant, if overlooked, contributor to Western vegan thought. Corey Lee Wrenn is Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Kent. She is the author of several books, including A Rational Approach to Animal Rights: Extensions in Abolitionist Theory (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) and Piecemeal Protest: Animal Rights in the Age of Nonprofits (University of Michigan Press, 2019). Kyle Johannsen is a philosophy instructor at Trent University and Wilfrid Laurier University. His most recent book is Wild Animal Ethics: The Moral and Political Problem of Wild Animal Suffering (Routledge, 2021). Learn more about your ad choices. Dr. Jun Wu is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern. The Wu lab uses interspecies chimeras to study fundamental biology: conserved and divergent developmental programs, determination of body and organ size, species barriers, and cancer resistance. They are also working to develop new applications for regenerative medicine. He talks about developmental compatibility between species, and the similarities and differences between blastoid models and blastocyts. He also discusses the challenges of growing human cells in animals, and human-monkey chimeric embryos.
