We get it, and so does our guest, Kathy Callahan. Did you know that if you add up the cats and dogs in the United States, they’d represent the 5th largest population of protein consumption in the world? When it comes to pet supply chains and sustainability, there is typically 1 sector called "pet services and products”. This one sector, encompasses dozens of other industries that have many categories in human supply chains. For example, apparel, food, medicine, and healthy/beauty are considered dramatically different industries in the human world, but we buy good and services for our pets in all those areas and more.  The environmental impact of the pet sector is huge. Did you know that 300 million pounds of packaging is sent to land fill each year? Finally, the pet industry has often overlooked and serious social sustainability challenges as well. Pet ownership has been directly linked to home ownership, but with systematic racist policies historically making home ownership out of reach for communities of color, what are the Justice, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion implications of the industry itself? Why aren’t people aware or talking about this?  In Episode 40, Sheri Hinish discusses massive opportunities in pet sustainability, in caring differently for our furry friends, with MelissaBauer from the Pet Sustainability Coalition. PSC has a super cool origin story starting with Chris Bentley. A lover of life and an environmentalist at heart, Chris Bentley has spent several decades looking for ways to minimize his environmental footprint. Based in Colorado, Chris was active in the entrepreneurial business community where he saw the Natural Foods movement adopt Organic Certification and the Outdoor Industry collaborate to build innovative sustainability tools. With over 25 years of success in the pet products industry, first with Aspen Pet and then with Only Natural Pet and “I and Love and You,” he knew there was an opportunity to drive impact in an industry he had grown to know and love. Together with fellow sustainable business leader Marty Grosjean at Only Natural Pet, Chris partnered with sustainability icon Hunter Lovins at Natural Capitalism Solutions to develop a suite of sustainability tools that could provide their respective companies the resources they needed to implement sustainable business processes. The outcome of this project was a world class toolkit built by Natural Capitalism Solutions that had far reaching potential. The new vision for these tools was to serve as a transformative catalyst that would enable the entire pet industry to engage more positively with the environment and communities where they do business. When complete, Chris, Natural Capitalism Solutions, the Outdoor Industry Association, and 25 business leaders met at Global Pet Expo 2013 where they formed a new nonprofit collaborative that would share tools and resources to encourage adoption of sustainable business practices. Banco De Gaia with Toby Marks in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1978, Marks began his musical career as a drummer in a heavy metal band. Marks moved to Portugal in 1986 and played Beatles music for tourists. He first delved into electronic music in 1989, when he bought a digital sampler. The first tune he recorded on it was called "Maxwell House". Having cut his teeth on the early 90s ambient dub compilations, in 1994 he released his first studio album Maya on Planet Dog records, which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize on its release. It was followed in 1995 by the critically acclaimed Last Train to Lhasa. Both albums reached No. 1 in the UK independent charts and featured in the national album chart top 40. In the following decade Banco De Gaia released Live at Glastonbury, Big Men Cry, The Magical Sounds of Banco De Gaia, Igizeh and You Are Here. In 1997, Banco De Gaia put together a five-piece band that included Ted Duggan (drums), Ashley Hopkins (bass), Larry Whelan (wind synth, saxophone and ethnic flutes), and Gary Spacey-Foot (percussion and saxophones). The band reduced in number to just Marks, Duggan, and Hopkins in 1999, and then just Marks and Duggan from 2000 until 2003, when Marks went back to being a solo artist. On 20 September 2009, Banco De Gaia played an album launch show for his album Memories Dreams Reflections at Dingwalls in London. This show was to celebrate 20 years of Banco De Gaia. Marks was joined on stage by three members from the original five-piece band: Hopkins, Whelan, and Duggan and vocalist Maya Preece, who sang on the latest album. He released a studio album Apollo on 8 April 2013, on his own Disco Gecko Recordings. In 2015, Banco (Toby Marks) returned to playing with a live 3-piece band, Ted Duggan (drums) and James Eller (bass). On 7 October 2016 he released his ninth studio album The 9th of Nine Hearts, featuring collaborations with Sophie Barker (Zero 7), Tim Bowness (No-Man), Dick Parry (Pink Floyd) and his band.

Это музыка 90-х годов, эмбиент, электроника… да, и не важны стили, главное, что это музыка, самая мелодичная для меня музыка, музыка которую сейчас не делают… Многие треки я не слышал годами, так как вся эта музыка в то время была только на кассетах и покупалась только в одном месте! В одном историческом месте, куда уходили все мои деньги на покупку эти мега-кассет, с необычной для меня в то время музыкой. Я жил той музыкой тогда, засыпал, просыпался, грустил… все было связанно с ней. Первые ночи в Кацивели в 1996 году, уже проходили под эту музыку! Про каждый трек я могу писать бесконечно. Я рад, что наконец то все собрал, на самом деле очень трудно было найти всю эту музыку, и вот готов, микс длиной 13 лет… теперь я знакомлю вас с этой волшебной музыкой. Deep Space Network – Zenn La. Трек 1993 года – трек который я искал 13 лет, трек который был у меня записан на видеокассету еще, запись прогамы Chillout Zone @ MTV, уже в далеком 96-году я был болен тем треком. И вот недавно, на каком то торренте, скачал… потому что нигде его не было! Ой, я помню клип, такой весь из компьютерной графики, жаль нет на ютубе) да, было время когда я с видеокассет переписывал музыку на обычные кассеты. Salt Tank – Saragasso sea. Магический трек, клип, все тоже началось с клипа все, а потом чудом нашел на кассетке, той самой)  Stevie Be Zet – Man in machine. А тут я расскажу целую историю, дело в том что тогда в 90-х я думал что группа Global Communication. В то же время у меня была кассета Stevie Be Zet – но там была музыка Global Communication. А все дело в том, что были попутаны кассеты при покупке кассет))) потом в долго в инете не мог найди этот трек, потому что думал что это какой то редкий альбом Global Communication. И вот только месяц назад я нахожу в инете, всю эту музыку. Не поверите, но наверное лет 5 засыпал под эту кассету, где этот трек был первым. Все мои мысли перед сном, то о чем я думаю сопровождались этим треком, по этому этот трек для меня особенный. Ярчайшие звезды Крыма, падали под этот трек. Stevie Be Zet – passion & hope. Продолжение, предыдущего трека… как мне нравился один момент в этом треке, не передать. Вот она, настоящая музыка, наполненная мелодией.  End of Orgy – Orange Orange. В 90-х я на МТВ записал музыкальный фильм, группы End of Orgy. Опять же искал наверное всю сознательную свою жизнь, нашел месяц назад на одном торренте. Что бы описать, то что делают эти ребята, я просто процитирую одну рецензию: «Горячо любимый мною французский коллектив, который не так давно исчез с музыкального горизонта, но успел подарить истинное наслаждение и оставить неизгладимое впечатление в сердцах. Никому неизвестная группа, однажды «проскользнувшая» на MTV, и оставшаяся незамеченной, вовсе не гениальные музыканты. Они делают в принципе простую музыку, но тут и срабатывает принцип «всё гениальное просто». Как же сложно описать словами ту красоту, которую «вытворяют» эти люди.…Иногда это так глубоко проникает в ваше подсознание, освобождая что-то доселе неизвестное и одновременно до боли знакомое. Музыка этого коллектива электронная, но в ней заключена душа, огромная человеческая душа. Нео-симфонизм, Melancholic Ambient, как ещё можно назвать это? Бесполезно, эта музыка выше всяких ярлыков и критики. Иногда эта музыка пугающе откровенна, как будто кто-то переживший много боли и радости открыл вам свою душу, рассказал об израненном сердце. И вы вдруг осознаете, что этот человек …вы сам.…Да, музыка END OF ORGY полностью инструментальная, однако слова здесь излишни, ваше воображение само всё дорисует. Ленивое полуденное солнце, ранняя весна в маленьком городке, маленький одинокий мальчик на скамейке в скверике, яркие звезды, таинственно мерцающие в небе. Простите, это лишь мизерная часть ощущений и настроений. Эта музыка не навязчива, она обволакивает и забирает с собой, на ваших глазах рождается маленькое чудо. Эта музыка - моё наслаждение, моя боль и моя искрящиеся радость, она всегда живёт внутри меня, радуя уже первыми аккордами.  Не надо жестокости и замкнутости в себе, позвольте себе иногда на время уйти в другой мир, где всё так чисто и где можно проронить слезу. Слёзы - это признак человечности. И запомните - всё прекрасное впереди, простите за смелость, но если вы не слышали этого - вы ничего не слышали, как это не абсурдно и нескромно! Трек тоже был заслушан мною до дыр. После выхода альбома "...I Care Because You Do" Aphex Twin охарактеризовали как "Джимми Хендрикс хаус-музыки". Думается не напрасно... Banco de Gaia – Lai Lah (v.1). трек с альбом MAYA, яркий готический эмбиент, насыщенный богатой музыкой ввиде инструментов древних Мая. Как щас помню, очень любил этот трек слушать дома, днем, после школы, когда я был сам дома. «Banco de Gaia - Британский эйсид-хаус-бум конца восьмидесятых дал миру много новых и интересных имен. Под влиянием музыкальной эстетики того времени родилось множество стилей и направлений современной электронной музыки. Одним из тех, кто ступил на музыкальный путь после распространения в Британии электронного движения, является и англичанин Тоби Маркс, который благодаря своим оригинальным работам под псевдонимом Banco De Gaia, сам того не подозревая, создал и развил новое музыкальное движение. Первоначально идея была проста - смешать экзотические элементы восточной и арабской музыки с эмбиентными и дабовыми ритмами. Однако постепенно такой подход претерпел некоторые изменения. И вместо сэмплирования старых и избитых кассет и пластинок Тоби отправляется с портативным магнитофончиком путешествовать на Ближний Восток. Я кстати эту группу тоже с видеокассеты на обычную кассету переписывал, магическая музыка, смотришь клип и попадаешь в средневековье. Autechre – Nil трек с альбома «Amber» 1994 года, в то время я просто дурел этой группой, мне даже в 90-х посчастливилось купить переписанную сиди болванку с этим альбом, а потом еще на Петровке купить альбом 1993 года - "Incunabula". В альбоме «Amber» уже нет той позитивной романтики, что была на "Incunabula". "Amber" более задумчивый, темный, и при этом местами просто завораживающе красивый. Холодные амбиентные композиции сменяются довольно тяжелыми ритмичными треками, а кульминацией диска становится светлая, легкая и воздушная композиция "Slip". Для части поклонников группы, так и не принявших шумовые эксперименты, "Амбер" так и остался вершиной творчества Autechre. Если задаться вопросом, кто из музыкантов оказал наибольшее влияние на электронику второй половины 90-х, британский проект Autechre наверняка будет упомянут одним из первых.  Global Communication – «9:25» да-да, именно так называется трек, из альбома "76:14" (1994). Этот трек для меня особенный, он как то заменял мне кислород, я слушал его часами, днями просто. Альбом Global Communication 94-го года, названный "76:14", является, по мнению многих критиков и слушателей, наивысшей точкой эмбиент-хаус-движения середины девяностых. А некоторые треки из этого альбома навсегда стали классикой мирового эмбиента. Ambient House - этот термин использовали, чтобы различить новую волну амбиент исполнителей например, The ORB, The KLF, Irresistible Force, Future Sound Of London, Orbital и т.п. Термин Ambient House часто применяли к неопределенной танцевальной музыке, которая не обязательно использовалась только для танца. В своем более строгом виде, Ambient House подразумевал музыку, использующую первичные элементы Acid-House музыки: midtempo, four-on-the-floor beats; synth pads и strings; soaring vocal samples. Было время я очень увлекался этим направлением, последний трек в миксе как первый трек в другом моем жизненном периоде, только вот для микса нужно найти весь материал того времени, многие вещи есть, но все же маловато будет, но думаю я все таки познакомлю вас, с этим прекрасным прошлым, интересным стилем.

Даже не знаю с чего начать, многое хочется рассказать, то как все начиналось, а начиналось все именно с этой музыки. Микс – моя история, история становления моего вкуса. В один микс, я собрал все ту музыку, благодаря которой, я такой как сейчас. Это музыка 90-х годов, эмбиент, электроника… да, и не важны стили, главное, что это музыка, самая мелодичная для меня музыка, музыка которую сейчас не делают… Многие треки я не слышал годами, так как вся эта музыка в то время была только на кассетах и покупалась только в одном месте! В одном историческом месте, куда уходили все мои деньги на покупку эти мега-кассет, с необычной для меня в то время музыкой. Я жил той музыкой тогда, засыпал, просыпался, грустил… все было связанно с ней. Первые ночи в Кацивели в 1996 году, уже проходили под эту музыку! Про каждый трек я могу писать бесконечно. Я рад, что наконец то все собрал, на самом деле очень трудно было найти всю эту музыку, и вот готов, микс длиной 13 лет… теперь я знакомлю вас с этой волшебной музыкой. Deep Space Network – Zenn La. Трек 1993 года – трек который я искал 13 лет, трек который был у меня записан на видеокассету еще, запись прогамы Chillout Zone @ MTV, уже в далеком 96-году я был болен тем треком. А тут я расскажу целую историю, дело в том что тогда в 90-х я думал что группа Global Communication. В то же время у меня была кассета Stevie Be Zet – но там была музыка Global Communication. А все дело в том, что были попутаны кассеты при покупке кассет))) потом в долго в инете не мог найди этот трек, потому что думал что это какой то редкий альбом Global Communication. И вот только месяц назад я нахожу в инете, всю эту музыку. Не поверите, но наверное лет 5 засыпал под эту кассету, где этот трек был первым. Все мои мысли перед сном, то о чем я думаю сопровождались этим треком, по этому этот трек для меня особенный. Ярчайшие звезды Крыма, падали под этот трек. Stevie Be Zet – passion & hope.
