Veteran journalist Joe Mathews offers a post-election analysis of California's future, arguing that the state's path lies not in isolation but in building global alliances — particularly at the local level. While many focus on tensions between the state and federal governments, Mathews suggests California's cities should forge connections with counterparts worldwide who face challenges from authoritarian forces. As national governments falter globally, he argues, local governance becomes increasingly crucial. Drawing from his international expertise, Mathews outlines how California's communities could learn from places all over the world.

It's time for the final installment of this year's in-person interviews I conducted at the legendary Newport Folk Festival which took place in Newport, Rhode Island, July 28-30. First up, my friends Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran of Illiterate Light stopped by to chat with me about the Bike Stage that they hosted, curated and operated. Jeff and Jake -- a hard-core rocking two-piece by day -- have created a sustainable and entirely off-the-grid solution to set a shining example of how we can mitigate the environmental impact of the live music ecosystem. This is the embodiment of Think Globally, Act Locally!!Next up, I spoke to Jake Ewald of Slaughter Beach, Dog, a Newport Folk first-timer whose alt-folk brand of artistry was a perfect fit for the Harbor Stage audience. I talk to Jake about his powerful songwriting and how very unexpected it was for him to even be at Newport Folk. We share tons of laughs as Jake's comedic timing is spot-on. Slaughter Beach, Dog's new album Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling will be out September 22.I also had the pleasure of sitting down with Erich Huffaker and Mariam Diakite of Orchestra Gold, a band with roots both in Oakland, CA as well as Mali, West Africa.  I talk with Erich and Mariam about the African Psychedelic Rock movement and how African Dance is integrated into the ethos of this band, whose mission is to "spread healing and community through the universal gift of music." Amen. And to close down the 2023 Folk Fest series, I had a gem of a convo with Newport natives Evan St. Martin and Dave Sarazen of Laden Valley.  The first act to hit the stage this year, it was a surreal experience for sure, and they both related to me just how incredibly special it was for them, after years of attending the festival as fans, to actually be up there performing one of their rare live shows. This was an example of the pure joy of live performance for both fans and the artists themselves. It has truly been an honor to bring all these amazing artists to the Roadcase audience. Newport is a truly special experience for artists and fans alike, and I'm glad I can bring some of that excitement and musical joy to all of you.  See you all at Newport 2024, and in the meantime, Rock On!!

If you'd like to receive this gift, subscribe at the BAE level over at https://www.patreon.com/millennial by October 20th! What are the ethics involved with creating and consuming true crime media? With a recent Netflix release centered on infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, victims' families have been vocal about the damage of being forced to relive their trauma through the cultural zeitgeist. Do we need to keep rehashing the same traumatic stories again and again? As we inch closer to midterms, Laura has an important PSA: Think globally, act locally. Stories of US Governors transporting asylum seekers to other states, the Iranian government's violent crackdown on protests, and Italy's new far-right Prime Minister don't exist in a vacuum. Andrew's Tech Corner gets he and Chloé feuding about Instagram reels, has us cheering for an improvement to Amazon's ebook return policy, and sending thoughts and prayers to the Instagram employees inevitably training the new Ai that will block unsolicited nude photos. This week's recommendations are for your face: Apostrophe (Andrew), the Weilisi Ring Light (Laura), and Trader Joe's daily facial sunscreen (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Inspired by this Reddit thread, we're talking about the adult luxuries we never saw ourselves being obsessed with. King beds are game changers for those of us in relationships. Or, you know, just people with dogs. What types of things have we splurged on that have improved our lives? Laura only recently discovered the benefits of a good vacuum! Her floor is now SO! CLEAN! Better quality also leads to having to buying certain types of products less. It's a win-win!

Ah some music...yay! Teri Smolens and Seabury Gould join me all the way from Northern California to sing original songs from their album, Newsicals, written during Covidtime. One of a kind!!BIO: Teri Smolens, the singer - songwriter, has a lifelong connection to folk music and a background in musical theater. Growing up in the 1960s and 70s, she also had exposure to classic rock, jazz, blues, and the topical music made popular by the many rallies and protests of the era. Forced into early retirement from her catering business of 25 years by the 2020 lockdown's, she was left with lots of time to research (another passion) and write, shifting her shifting her creative outlet from food to songs. "Newsicals" was created to make the news, in some small way, music to the ears - perhaps easier to take in and digest via melodies and humor.BIO: Seabury Gould is an eclectic musician, multi- instrumentalist, singer, recording artist, music teacher & storyteller. He is perhaps especially known for his singing & playing of guitar, bamboo flute & Irish bouzouki.  He plays solo & with other musicians in a variety of styles including traditional Irish/Celtic music, original songs, folk songs, blues, music of India, & Beatles songs. One of Seabury's main inspirations was folk musician & activist Pete Seeger who coined the phrase "Think Globally, Sing Locally".  He is originally from the Philadelphia area where he started playing guitar at age 11. He has lived on the 'Redwood coast' in Humboldt county for 18 years. Seabury is a composer, songwriter & arranger. He leads singalongs with an emphasis on "Hope-ful songs". In a decades-long effort to expand its international “circle of friends,” the PRC has persisted in supplementing its national-level diplomacy with local exchanges. Over the past four decades, the PRC has forged more than 2000 sister-city relationships worldwide, including over 200 in the United States and over 350 in the EU. China forms these ties across the world through the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, a United Front organization that specializes in developing relationships with local business, political, and media figures abroad. But sister cities are only one of many avenues for Beijing to engage with local actors in order to realize its global aspirations. Bonnie Glaser talks with Dr. Mareike Ohlberg about China's strategy of local diplomacy and its importance in an environment of increasingly tense national-level relations. Topic: Using Intelligence Analysis in InfoSec: Think Globally and Act Locally In episode 48 of The Cyber5, we are joined by Rick Doten. Rick is VP of Information Security at Centene Corporation and consults as CISO for Carolina Complete Health. We discuss shifting the operating model of threat hunting and intelligence to a more collaborative model, “think globally and act locally.” We then dive deep into the intelligence analysis for collecting and analyzing the vast array of network data to prioritize network protection. Finally, Rick makes an argument for the outsourcing of an intelligence function as a viable model.  5 Topics Covered in this Episode: Security Operations Integrating with Cloud, Applications, and Mobile: (01:00 - 06:00) Security operations involve integration with key elements of the business such as the cloud, applications, and mobile team. Risks to a container are much different from a server and force security operations to integrate with many teams, especially in large enterprises. This will guide how we protect proactively with alerting and reactively with incident response.  Using Intelligence Analysis with Information Security Data Collection (06:00 - 08:52) Intelligence includes tracking specific campaigns of threat actors, their intentions, and capabilities. Intelligence analysis in the disciplines of information security is linking the human to the malicious act. For example, suppose a criminal threat actor uses email phishing and credential harvesting. In that case, the data collection model and instrumentation will be different than looking at actors who use exposed RDP or take advantage of supply chain risks. It will also be very different from a nation-state actor who is known to go “low and slow” and persist in 10 different places in a network.  Value of Attribution and Communicating to the Board of Directors: (08:52 - 13:26) The mindset of keeping confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information safe and not wanting to attribute the threat actors and building appropriate threat models is becoming more antiquated. Understanding the human who perpetrated the act is critical. Their job is to break into a network and collect and/or monetize. This used to be easier in the defense industrial base because there are cleared environments for information sharing; however, this is becoming more efficient with Information Sharing Analysis Centers (ISACs). Boards of Directors understand competitors stealing intellectual property, so framing cyber threats in the same vein is the most productive way to get them to understand the importance of nation-state espionage or cyber criminals.  The Right Way to Do Threat Intelligence: Think Globally Act Locally (13:26-24:00) The most important threat intelligence is internal network telemetry. The wrong mentality is to buy threat intelligence feeds and load indicators of compromise (IOCs) into a security tool like a SIEM. This will result in tremendous workloads with little results as good actors change their signatures constantly. Instead, it's important to get timely, actionable, and relevant finished intelligence on actors and their campaigns, not data or information. Finished intelligence might be reviewing technical methodologies of Russian GRU (or REvil ransomware) actors and identifying behaviors that can be detected internally on the network. At the highest level of attack campaigns are assignments of individuals to attack one particular company and steal/monetize something very specific. After gaining this intelligence, a security team can “dogpile” with the different entities of the business (SOC, applications, IT, development, mobile, etc.) to hunt and defend, “think globally, act locally.” Threat intelligence could certainly be outsourced, especially for companies who do not belong in an industry with ISACs.  The Hardest Part of Intelligence Analysis: Determining Targeted Attack Versus Commodity (24:00-31:00) The hardest part of intelligence is being able to quickly identify if the attack is targeted or commodity. An actor who persists on Active Directory and the domain controllers is much different from those who want to exploit a bug in a cloud application or mobile application. Security teams who have minimal visibility gaps with internal network telemetry that can quickly detect these differences separate the mature security teams from the less mature security teams.
