Today, our guest is Dr. Scott Freeman, lecturer emeritus in biology at the University of Washington. Since the mid-1990s, Dr. Freeman's focus has been on textbook writing and teaching. He co-authored Evolutionary Analysis and was sole author of Biological Science, each through four editions. He is a recipient of a UW Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Freeman's research interests center on the impact of active learning strategies and high-structure course designs on student performance in college science courses. Specifically, he investigates whether certain types of course designs have a positive impact on achievement by underrepresented minority and economically disadvantaged students, the impact of course-based undergraduate research experiences, and the support of underprepared, at-risk students in chemistry. We are delighted to have Dr. Freeman on the show to discuss his work in scholarship of teaching and learning, some of the surprising findings from the research on active learning and what it means to create a high-structured course. Dr. Scott Freeman, thank you so much for joining the show today.

Inside the two-year fight to bring charges against school librarians in Granbury, TexasNBC News, By Mike Hixenbaugh, Tyler Kingkade, Scott Friedman and Eva Parks, on July 23, 2024https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/school-librarians-banned-books-investigation-texas-rcna161444In a saga reminiscent of the Keystone Cops, a two-year pursuit of felony charges against school librarians in Granbury, Texas, unfolded like a farcical mission gone awry. Right-wing extremist Scott London embarked on a vendetta, pouring over stacks of literature while sporting a body cam to capture his quest to persecute—er, prosecute—three school librarians. Their alleged crime? Allowing minors to check out books deemed obscene. Despite subpoenas and dramatic investigative theatrics, the case ultimately fizzled when the district attorney declined to indict, citing insufficient evidence.Scott London's mission to stop kids from reading books he deemed inappropriate was both absurd and alarming. The details of his crusade, covered by NBC News through the reporting of Mike Hixenbaugh, Tyler Kingkade, Scott Freeman, and Nia Parks on July 23, 2024, reveal a tale of overreach and misplaced zeal. The debate over who should decide which books belong in schools or libraries was reignited by this case. Cindy, a commentator on the issue, argued that self-righteous individuals like London, who have nothing better to do than invade privacy and push their own beliefs, should not make such decisions. Instead, she suggested that the Ministry of Education, funded and managed at the federal level, should handle these matters to ensure uniformity and fairness across states.London's antics included gathering a list of children who had checked out the contentious books, ironically in the name of creating a safe environment for them. His efforts highlight a broader issue: a segment of the population views education and access to diverse ideas as threats. This mindset, according to Cindy, stems from discomfort with topics like gender and homosexuality, which London finds "icky" and thus seeks to ban from public discourse.Eli, another commentator, emphasized that banning books only makes them more appealing to children. If a book is removed from a library, kids will find ways to access it, often through other means like purchasing it online. This approach does nothing to stop children from reading the material and instead punishes educators and librarians who aim to provide a comprehensive education. The discussion also touched on the racial aspects of book banning. Books by and about people of color are frequently targeted, reflecting a discomfort with confronting historical and contemporary issues of race in America. Cindy noted that the shame associated with America's racist past leads to an avoidance of these topics, resulting in efforts to erase them from educational materials. The case of Scott London's failed prosecution of librarians in Granbury, Texas, serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle over educational content and the dangers of allowing personal biases to dictate public policy. It also underscores the need for a more mature and equitable approach to managing school libraries and the materials they offer to students. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.31.2 featuring Infidel64, Cindy Plaza, Eli Slack and Kelley LaughlinBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

OLD NEWS: A 2014 meta-analysis by Scott Freeman and colleagues of 225 peer-reviewed studies concluded that students taught in an active learning environment significantly outperform peers taught using more traditional formats.  CURRENT STATUS:  Most colleges and universities are still a long way from full adoption of these practices.  The reasons are complex.  Resistance comes from institutions and often from faculty, but also from students.  We have trained our students to think that traditional lecturing is THE way to learn, in spite of mountains of evidence to the contrary. In this episode, we discuss an elegant, controlled classroom study by Louis Deslauriers and colleagues that again tests the value of active learning, but importantly then pays attention to the student perspective and provides suggestions about getting students on board the active-learning band-wagon.  This is a beautiful and important study.  Enjoy!

In this episode, Chris Rivers and Scott Freeman discuss some best practices in initiating and navigating difficult conversations in community groups. We have found that many leaders are hesitant to step into difficult conversations for a number of reasons. What if I say the wrong thing? What if I offend someone? Will it even help if I say something? I'm not qualified to speak into this! Chris and Scott provide encouragement as well as challenge the hesitations leaders experience when confronted with difficult conversations within their community groups. Ultimately, these challenges should push us to pray diligently and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us. We believe it is essential to have a solid groundwork of understanding the scriptures in order to effectively disciple others. The goal for Understanding the Bible is to do just that - equip members across the church with a solid understanding of scripture to be able to disciple others, no matter their leadership role. Resources - - After listening to this episode, email your responsible pastor and let him know when you plan to take your group through Understanding the Bible this school year. - A few weeks before you are ready to start, ask your responsible pastor to provide you with enough participant guides and facilitator guides for your group members and facilitators, and make a plan to get the guides to your members at least 1 week before the first time you watch a session. - During the week before your group starts the study, send the template email in the facilitator guide and include this trailer video (vimeo.com/575080584/da30791dfc) to help your group have an idea of what to expect. In this episode, Chris Rivers and Scott Freeman discuss Grace Church's Shepherding Values—Love Patiently, Know Thoroughly, Speak Wisely, Direct Biblically, and Pray Diligently. The Shepherding Values were created as a guide for effectively equipping community group leaders, as well as other leaders who carry shepherding responsibilities. Scott and Chris give an overview of each of the shepherding values and the possible implementation of each. As leaders, we are often using many of these values at the same time or in correspondence with one another. Scott talks through why we have recently added the fifth Shepherding Value—Pray Diligently. We believe that in order to be effective leaders, we must be prayerfully dependent on God while we Love Patiently, Know Thoroughly, Speak Wisely, and Direct Biblically. It is important to be self aware as a leader in knowing which values are your strongest and which are your weakest. Some of these values may come more easily than others, and it's not possible to encompass all of them perfectly. However, there is room to grow and challenge yourself in the areas that you are weak. You can use the resources listed in the episode notes to work through the applying document. As you continue to implement these values into your leadership, you will see that they become more natural. The community group experience serves as an opportunity to dig deeper into God's Word, share life with other believers, and apply biblical teaching to our everyday lives. This process can look different yet still have the same outcome—authentic, biblical community. Our hope is that this new process will serve to create expectancy for what is coming as we look ahead to future sermons. Scott Freeman, a former prosecutor with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, is the co-founder of JST Capital, a firm specializing in providing a full suite of traditional financial services to institutions and high-net worth individuals in the digital asset market. On this episode of the Crypto Conversation, Scott and Andy discuss institutional investors, whether the Bitcoin halving is priced in, and the effect of the Coronavirus on the financial markets.  Why you should listen: As we begin a new decade, many market watchers had expected turbulence and volatility, and 2020 is not playing around. The Coronavirus is driving the global news cycle and impacting all financial markets as governments scramble to contain the virus and prevent a pandemic. In the meantime, with just 100 days until the Bitcoin halving, while stock markets fall, the BTC price is soaring, is the halving priced in? Key takeaway: It's too early to know what will happen with the Coronavirus but it's already having a negative impact on the global economy. Andy and Scott discuss a note on the virus by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a statistician and risk analyst whose work concerns problems of randomness, probability, and uncertainty. Taleb's take is that in order to contain such a virus, all resources must be diverted to containment as soon as possible, an opportunity that China missed. Taleb's view is that while there is a very high probability for humanity surviving a single such event, over time, there is eventually zero probability of surviving repeated exposures to such events. As a companion piece to Rock N Roll Archaeology EP13: Hard to Handle, Shelley and Christian discuss this all too-short of the life story of Otis Redding, written by Scott Freeman. Scott gives his take on Otis' life coming from Macon Georgia, the same town where Little Richard and James Brown were born. Otis grew up on the streets. His father was preacher and had been a sharecropper. They lived in tough neighborhoods until Otis got money. Otis loved to be around his family and friends from home, although towards the end his life got very hectic and ended tragically. Published by St. Martin's Press - December 11, 2001.
