Unfortunately some scheduling issues pushed back our recording of #Pratchat80, and unfortunately we aren't going to be able to bring you that discussion of Making Money until until October. But it has been a very long time since we talked about Going Postal, so Ben thought you might like a recap to tide you over - plus a discussion of some of his favourite Discworld book covers, prompted by subscriber Ian! We'd love to hear about your favourite covers, from any of the various editions of Pratchett's works! Let us know about them using the hashtag #Pratchat79A on social media, or get in touch via email or our subscriber Discord. You can find various covers of the Discworld books via the L-Space wiki, or via the Internet Speculative Fiction Database at isfdb.org. For the isfdb, make sure you choose “Fiction Titles” below the search box when searching for a specific book, then scroll down to the bottom of the list of editions and click the link which says “View all covers for [Book Title]”. Note that not all the covers Ben mentions are at those two sources; we've linked to other sources below where necessary. Ben mentions these favourite covers: The original cover for The Colour of Magic by Alan Smith Pratchett's own original cover for The Carpet People (the image isn't as small as Ben remembered) The new Penguin paperback designs by Leo Nickolls, incorporating Paul Kidby's artwork, especially Moving Pictures. (The link is to the L-Space page Ben put together for these editions, which also gives you handy links to all the books in the wiki.) Paul Kidby's covers for the first UK editions, in particular Night Watch, Going Postal and The Science of Discworld, plus the back cover of the original hardcover edition of The Last Hero Josh Kirby's covers for Eric (the original large format edition), Small Gods, and especially Reaper Man The cover for the graphic novel adaptation of Small Gods by Ray Friesen The Penguin 25th Anniversary edition of Hogfather, with art by BoomArtwork The American hardcover edition of Raising Steam, with art by Justin Gerard The Mai Més Catalan editions with covers by Marina Vidal, especially Equal Rites and The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents We discussed Going Postal way back in 2020, in #Pratchat38, “Moisten to Steal”, with guests Nicholas J Johnson and Lawrence Leung. We'll be back in October with #Pratchat80 discussing Making Money with guest Stephanie Convery.
Steam power comes to the Disc, whether or not the Disc is ready for it. This book, which lays track (ha ha) for many changes in and around Ankh-Morpork, unfortunately instead became a farewell to many beloved characters. Why did Sir Terry give the Disc's version of Transylvania a German name? The issue came up in a discussion on our Discord server, and I'm sharing what I learned from that discussion with our listeners. What we learn is that Sir Terry was well-versed in European history and an excellent linguist as well. That shouldn't surprise anyone who's read Monstrous Regiment, or Raising Steam, in particular. I say “in particular” because many of the Lancre books reference Uberwald, and Moist von Lipwig (Going Postal, et al.) hails from there. There's a big bilingual pun at the heart of it all, in fact. Great stuff, but as usual if you don't get the pun it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book(s). Uberwald is a cool name for a place with vampires, werewolves, and Igors in it, after all. Many thanks to Bas and Malocaptain, who participated in the above-referenced discussion on Discord, and thus enlightened us about another STP pune, or play on words. If you have thoughts about this experiment in three-minute podcasting, please shoot me an email at randy@mindkindle.net. I'd love to hear from you; I will answer you; and if you are a first-time emailer I'll include a recording of the Clacks episode with my reply. That's the only way you can get a copy of the Clacks episode, short of using a second email addy and a fake name! Steve & Colm tackle the penultimate book in the Discworld canon, finding a lot to talk about and a lot more to disagree about. They discuss modernity, tradition, identity, fundamentalism, and, of course, trains. Colm sets off groans across the north east of England and Steve makes an enemy of the gnome community.

After a dip into the Medicine Makers and Purveyors section of Directory of Ankh-Morpork Merchants, Traders and Services, we give a nod to the city's three greatest culinary figures. Then we consider Harry King, and his transformation from King of the Golden River to the Disc's first Railway Baron. Finally, we consider the speed with which Ankh-Morpork develops in the brief time between The Color of Magic and Raising Steam, and realize that really just doesn't matter. All this, and another sausage inna bun. The Discord server link is https://discord.gg/K9s6BSW. As always you can reach me at randy@mindkindle.net, and remember you can find the Portal blog, Gnomic Musings, at https://mindkindle.net/gnomic-musings-the-discworld-portal-blog/.This week's contest quote: “Clear my appointments this morning, will you? I will see the Guild of Town Criers at nine o'clock and the Guild of Engravers at ten past.”“I wasn't aware they had appointments, sir.”“They will have,” said Lord Vetinari. Is that quote from Monstrous Regiment, The Truth, or The Fifth Elephant? E-mail your answer (or guess) to me at the above email address. As usual, no animals, Ankh-Morpork merchants, goblins, or even grags were harmed in the production of this show. Remember only you can perform Random Acts of Kindness. As always, this episode is dedicated to the memory of Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE. Chelonian mobile.
The most up-do-date info available on the big scoring controversy between the wizards and the witches. As of this writing, the books which have been adudged as featuring one or more witches in a major role are:Witches: Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, Carpe Jugulum, Wee Free Men, Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, I Shall Wear Midnight and The Shepherd's Crown.Initially, the Wizards were given credit for The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Moving Pictures, Eric, Interesting Times, Hogfather, The Last Continent, The Last Hero and Unseen Academicals. The wizards appealed because they hadn't been credited with a point for Equal Rites. They also discovered that the scorer, who has since been sacked, counted The Color of Magic as one book. With these changes, The contest resulted in an eleven-all tie. The witches appeared to accede to this, although there is some disagreement about that. The wizards, however, immediately expressed their displeasure and appealed to Lord Vetinari, claiming that Soul Music, Going Postal and Raising Steam all feature at least one wizard in a major role. There is some disagreement about this, to put it mildly. But Lord Vetinari will have to sort it all out. It is rumored that he has tasked Commander Vimes with investigating this whole situation, but from our perspective it is very difficult to see a reason for calling in the Watch. Stay tuned to The Discworld Portal for more on all this. If you want to get involved in the discussion, or if you would like to see the full story as it will undoubtedly appear in The Ankh Morpork News (Motto: We're not the Times. Street version: Our iconographer doesn't suck) please go to the Portal's Patreon page to find out how. You can go to Patreon.com and search for The Discworld Portal.
