It's Tuesday, February 4th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Egyptian Christian jailed for converting from Islam An Egyptian Christian, Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo, is a father of five and converted from Islam to the Christian faith. Originally from Yemen, West Asia, he has been released from an Egyptian prison after three years of incarceration. Abdo was indicted on charges of participating in a private Facebook group which advocated the Christian faith. Alliance Defending Freedom International represented the Christian convert who suffered poor treatment in prison, affecting his heart, liver, and kidneys. Trump pauses tariffs on Canada & Mexico after pledge to boost border enforcement On Monday, President Donald Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on his tariff threats against Mexico and Canada since America's two largest trading partners took steps to appease his concerns about border security and drug trafficking, reports the Associated Press. TRUMP: “Had a great talk with Mexico. We have to stop fentanyl from coming in, and we have to stop the illegal aliens from coming in.” In the face of a 25% tariff south of the border, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would reinforce the border with 10,000 members of her country's National Guard. TRUMP: “They've agreed to put in 10,000 soldiers permanently, like forever, 10,000 soldiers at their side of the border and stop fentanyl.” That's why Trump called off that tariff threat for the moment. Mexico's trade surplus with the U.S. is running at $160 billion. The Trump administration had also suggested a 25% tariff on Canadian annual imports of some $430 billion. Initially, the Canadian government responded with a suggestion of a 25% tariff on American goods, currently running at $107 billion. But, on Monday afternoon, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted on X that the pause would occur “while we work together,” saying that his government would name a fentanyl czar, list Mexican cartels as terrorist groups, and launch a “Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering.” Will Trump's tariff threat persuade China and European Union? Trump has announced a 10% tariff on China on $400 billion of imports to begin today if President Xi Jinping does not demonstrably commit to combat illegal immigration and drug smuggling, reports Reuters. TRUMP: “If we can't make a deal with China, then the tariffs will be very, very substantial.” China's surplus is $270 billion. Europe will not be immune to President Trump's tariff pressure either. He is planning to levy a tariff on the European Union which, at this point, holds a trade surplus of $160 billion with the United States. U.S. Agency for Int'l Development under control of State Dept now Meanwhile, the Trump administration has announced that the U.S. Agency for International Development, primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid and development assistance, will move under the direct control of the U.S. State Department. It will no no longer act as an independent agency. USAID spending has run between $15 and $20 billion per year over the last 20 years. It was created in 1961 under the Kennedy administration. In related news, the USAID website was taken down Saturday. Dept. of Defense ends identity months The U.S. Defense Department has announced an end to the sponsorship and support of “Identity Months” through the use of official resources. That will include Black History Month, Women's History Month, and National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The release entitled “Identity Months Dead at DoD” stated that the department would instead “celebrate the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds as we restore our warrior culture and ethos.” New York doctor to be arrested for prescribing Abortion Kill Pill A Louisiana grand jury has issued an arrest warrant for a New York doctor who allegedly prescribed abortion kill pills for a pregnant minor who resided in the state of Louisiana. The jury indicted Dr. Margaret Carpenter; her company, Nightingale Medical, PC; and the minor's mother for the felony of administering an abortion-inducing drug to the child. West Baton Rouge District Attorney Tony Clayton told the Associated Press that the mother turned herself in to the police last week. Job 24:1, 14 speaks of this. “Since times are not hidden from the Almighty, why do those who know Him see not His days? … The murderer rises with the light; He kills the poor and needy; and in the night he is like a thief.” Education decline in America The United States is leading the world in educational decline, according to the most recent Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study issued towards the end of 2024. Our students' math scores dropped from 13th place in 2019 to 25th place in the 2023 testing. American 4th graders' scores fell 18 points after 2019, while 8th graders' scores fell by 27 points—the biggest drop since the United States began participating in the test in 1995. Peggy Carr, the commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, noted what she called the “steep, steep” declines — erasing progress made in previous years. Brazil, South Africa, and Morocco have the worst scores while China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan lead the world in science and math. But let us all remember that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction..” (Proverbs 1:7) Martyr John Rogers burned at the stake February 4, 1555 And, on this day in history, February 4th, 1555, John Rogers was burned at the stake, as the first Christian martyr under the reign of the English monarch Mary I. She became known as “Bloody Mary” for ordering a total of 280 Protestants burned at the stake. Rogers was a friend of William Tyndale and continued Tyndale's efforts to translate the Bible. Roger's work included the first complete English Bible and English Bible commentary, published under the pseudonym Thomas Matthews. His translation was known as the Matthews Bible. He is remembered for singing the Psalms as he was marched to the site of his execution. Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, February 4th in the year of our Lord 2025. What's it really like to step through the black door of No 10 for the first time as Prime Minister? Ed Balls and George Osborne ask David Cameron about his “out-of-body” experience on the way to the palace, plus what it's like organising a staff team who have just had to say goodbye to a government. They discuss how to handle the top job when life starts relentlessly throwing events at you, the surprising tasks - like letters of last resort - that suddenly become your responsibility, and whether a ruthless streak is the only way to succeed. As Keir Starmer marks six months as Prime Minister, Political Currency is stepping back into 2010, when another former leader of the opposition took up the premiership. A decade ago, the Scottish people went to the polls for a referendum vote to make a choice: should the country break free of the United Kingdom? Ultimately, they voted to stay by a resounding margin – crushing the hopes of the Scottish National Party and soothing the fears of the British government of the day. Political Trade Secrets: Winning Campaigns | Elections | Politics
In this insightful episode of Political Trade Secrets, host & pollster Dustin Olson dives deep into the world of public polling—polls released to the public through the media—with two seasoned experts: Pollster John Rogers of Torchlight Strategies and Pollster Lee Vasche, Olson's colleague from American Pulse Research & Polling. Together, they unpack the challenges pollsters face in today's turbulent political climate, exploring the differences between public and internal campaign polls, and why some polling methods—like online panels—might be even less reliable than you'd expect. John Rogers brings years of experience from his time at the National Republican Congressional Committee, where he established their polling department. He shares his unique perspective on state-level polling and the critical questions reporters and voters should ask when analyzing poll results. Meanwhile, Lee Vasche, a data science expert with extensive experience in fielding multimodal surveys with a focus on live phone interviews, sheds light on the growing issues with incentivized online surveys and explains how pollsters can better account for low-propensity voters and disaster-affected areas to deliver more accurate results. Join us as we pull back the curtain on the mechanics of public polling, analyze its limitations, and reveal how polling impacts public perception and electoral strategies. A @Christadelphians Video: Would you risk your life for a book? This may seem a ridiculous concept today, but this wasn't always the case. Not only was it once illegal to own a copy of the Bible, for centuries people were forbidden to even read it! Even more interesting is that some of those who risked their lives to ensure we can have it in our homes today have a connection to Rugby and the surrounding area. John Wycliffe (1329-1384) was an English theologian, philosopher, and religious reformer. He is best known for his translation of the Bible into English, which was the first complete translation of the Bible into English from the original languages. Wycliffe was a controversial figure in his own time, and he was eventually excommunicated by the Catholic Church. He died in 1384, and his bones were later dug up and burned by order of the Pope William Tyndale (1494-1536) was an English scholar and translator who is best known for his translation of the Bible into English. Tyndale's translation was based on the original Hebrew and Greek texts, and it was the first English translation to be made from these sources. Tyndale was a Protestant, and his translation was critical of the Catholic Church. He was eventually arrested by the authorities and burned at the stake in 1536. Miles Coverdale (1488-1569) was an English Protestant Bible translator. He was the first person to publish an English translation of the entire Bible, which was published in 1535. Coverdale's translation was based on the work of Tyndale and other scholars. He also translated the Bible into German and Latin. John Rogers (1500-1555) was an English Protestant martyr. He was the first person to be burned at the stake for heresy during the reign of Queen Mary I. Rogers was a minister in the Church of England, and he was arrested for his opposition to the Catholic Church. He was burned at the stake in 1555, along with other Protestant leaders. Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556) was an English religious reformer who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1533 to 1555. Cranmer was a key figure in the English Reformation, and he was responsible for the introduction of many Protestant reforms in the Church of England. He was also a translator of the Bible, and he was one of the authors of the Book of Common Prayer. Cranmer was burned at the stake in 1556 for heresy during the reign of Queen Mary I. These are just a few examples of the many people who suffered for making the Bible available in English. Their sacrifices helped to ensure that the Bible would be accessible to all people, regardless of their social status or religious beliefs. It's Monday, February 5th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Theology professor fired for upholding Biblical sexual ethic A theology professor in Derbyshire, England, has been fired from a Methodist Bible university after sharing his Biblical beliefs on social media, reports International Christian Concern. Dr. Aaron Edwards, an employee at Cliff College for seven years, was dismissed for publicly criticizing the Methodist Church and its unbiblical views on marriage. Edwards' employer had accused him of “bringing the college into disrepute.” On February 19, 2023, Edwards tweeted, “Homosexuality is invading the Church. Evangelicals no longer see the severity of this because they're busy apologizing for their apparently barbaric homophobia, whether or not it's true. This is a ‘Gospel issue,' by the way. If sin is no longer sin, we no longer need a Saviour.” The professor's tweet drew push back from several homosexual groups, prompting Cliff College to call the post “unacceptable” and “inappropriate,” demanding the professor remove the tweet. Isaiah 5:20 describes perfectly both the push back of the homosexual groups and the cowardly, unbiblical Cliff College. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” Truth be told, Cliff College brought itself into disrepute. To his credit, Edwards refused to take down the post, arguing it would violate his conscience. He further pointed out that the post was not defamatory to any individual in particular and was, therefore, not in violation of the school's social media policy. Despite his sincere efforts, the school opened an investigation, leading to the professor's suspension and subsequent dismissal. Unbelievably, school officials threatened to refer him to the U.K. government's counter terrorism and hate speech unit. Edwards is suing Cliff College for unfair firing and compensation under England's Equality Act. U.S. hits hard at militias in Iraq and Syria On Friday, the U.S. military launched an air assault on dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iranian-backed militias and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, reports the Associated Press. This was retaliation for the drone strike that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan last weekend. The massive barrage of strikes hit more than 85 targets at seven locations, including command and control headquarters, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, drone and ammunition storage sites that were connected to the militias or Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force. The Force is the Guard's expeditionary unit that handles Tehran's relationship with and arming of regional militias. The U.S. strikes appeared to stop short of directly targeting Iran or senior leaders of the Revolutionary Guard Quds Force within its borders, as the U.S. tries to prevent the conflict from escalating even further. Iran has denied it was behind the Jordan attack. Protesters rally in Texas against entry of illegal immigrants Here in America, hundreds of people converged Saturday in trucks, vans and RVs, in southern Texas to rally against what they say is an illegal immigrant "invasion," demanding tough new controls at the U.S. border with Mexico, reports AFP. Scrawled on the side of one of the vehicles reaching Quemado, Texas -- population 162 -- were the words "Join the God Fight." The convoy decided to gather in this tiny town along the Rio Grande river, which forms the natural border between the United States and Mexico, as debate swirls again about how to address record high illegal immigrant crossings. Hundreds of thousands of people from Central and South America, and beyond, have waded illegally across the river in recent months. But their huge numbers have become a galvanizing issue, especially ahead of the November presidential election, with Republicans in Congress blocking additional U.S. aid to Ukraine and Israel over demands that President Joe Biden does more to stop the flow. And so it is at tiny Quemado that the activist group calling itself "We the People" -- the first words in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution -- decided to meet and make their anger known. Under the slogan "Take our border back," these activists, traveling in convoys from the across the United States, have been arriving in towns along the border to camp -- and protest -- this past weekend. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America to spend $100 million on presidential election A national pro-life advocacy organization aims to spend nearly $100 million and knock on over 4 million doors ahead of the 2024 presidential election, reports the Christian Post. The November election outcome could have major implications for the future of abortion policy in the United States. In a statement Thursday, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America announced it will collaborate with its partner organization Women Speak Out PAC to "spend $92 million and reach 10 million voters to protect life across America." The figure exceeds the $56 million spent in the 2020 election cycle and the $78 million the group pledged to spend during the 2022 midterm election cycle. The campaign's hundreds of thousands of volunteers will canvas in eight battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Bloody Mary's first Protestant martyr And finally, on February 4th, 1555, John Rogers, an English Protestant clergyman and Bible translator, was burned at the stake in England by Queen Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary.” She was determined to violently restore Roman Catholicism. Translating the Bible into commonly spoken English, Rogers published The Matthew Bible under the pseudonym Thomas Matthew. Rogers' work constituted the first complete English Bible and commentary. On January 28 and 29, 1555, he came before the commission appointed by Catholic Cardinal Reginald Pole. He was sentenced to death by Catholic Bishop Stephen Gardiner for the so-called sin of denying the Christian character of the Church of Rome and the alleged real presence of Jesus Christ in the symbolic elements of bread and wine of Catholic communion. Even though Rogers was denied a meeting with his wife, he awaited and met death cheerfully. Shortly before his execution, Rogers was offered a pardon if he were to recant, but he refused. As he was marched to the site of his execution, the irrepressible John Rogers sang the Psalms. In John 16:2, Jesus said, “The time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.” Tragically, that is exactly what Bloody Mary thought, that she was offering a service to God by killing Protestant leaders who loved God's Word.
