Fill up the cooler and buckle up! We are getting you all set up for your weekend summer road trip — lots of great music to keep you moving, including pillow talk with the R&B singer Blossom and MC Ripley Snell. They’ll invite us inside the dreamy world they created for their new EP. We've also got a session with one of our favorite breakout acts of 2018, singer-songwriter Haley Heyndrickx — luminous, wise, and winsome. And we’ll tell some stories about how we get where we’re going, both ON the map and OFF. One remarkable guy, living outside Eugene, Orego, is one of the country’s foremost cartographers. We’ll hear how he shares his vision of the world through handmade maps. Plus, a pianist throws his grand piano onto a trailer to play across Eastern Oregon and back again.
This week on "State of Wonder," we remember the life and legacy of the ground-breaking writer Ursula K. Le Guin, and then we talk with Oregon's three Grammy nominees: Portugal. The Man, The Decemberists' side project Offa Rex, and Randy Porter and Nancy King.Remembering Ursula K Le GuinPortland lost a living legend this week. Ursula K. Le Guin passed away on Monday at the age of 88 in her Northwest home. Her writing not only spanned genres, it tore down the barriers that separated them, helping to elevate science fiction and fantasy into "literature" — to say nothing of opening up fiction to women writers and women protagonists. The worlds Le Guin created were places of refuge for those who felt like outsiders and places that challenged readers to think differently and expand their imaginations. In this segment, we listen to: 2:04 - A remembrance from April Baer 5:50 - A conversation with Le Guin at Wordstock in 2015, shortly after the release of a new version of her guide to writing, “Steering the Craft,” in which she spoke about her writing process and what it means to “push back” as a woman writer. 13:57 - A conversation with Le Guin's eldest child, Elisabeth Le Guin, a professor of musicology at UCLA, about the inspiration that is her mother, and what it was like to sit around the dinner table with such a fierce woman. You can listen to the full interview here. 22:38 - A conversation with Molly Gloss, the author of numerous books including "The Hearts of Horses" and "Wild Life," who met Le Guin in 1981 and has been a close friend and writing peer since. You can find the full conversation on Think Out Loud.Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" Is Up for Best Pop Group Performance - 29:17“Feel It Still,” the first single from Portugal. The Man’s newest album, “Woodstock,” set new records at the top of multiple charts, becoming the biggest crossover hit since Gotye’s “Somebody that I Used to Know.” Now the song has snagged Portugal. The Man a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Last summer, the band played an exclusive live set at the OPB studio and sat down to talk about the album. You can watch videos of their opbmusic session here. The Decemberists' Collaboration with Olivia Chaney Gets Nominated for Best Folk Album - 35:57The Decemberists may have finally met their match. The band teamed up with British singer Olivia Chaney under the name Offa Rex — a reference to an Anglo-Saxon king. The album, produced by local whiz Tucker Martine, is called “The Queen of Hearts,” and it's up for the Grammy for Best Folk Album. We invited Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy into the studio, and got Chaney on the line from England, to talk about how this dream team came to be. Randy Porter and Nancy King Contend for Best Jazz Vocal Album with "Porter Plays Porter" - 44:32Last but not least in the trio of Oregon Grammy contenders is the jazz pianist Randy Porter. Porter was first exposed to the music of his namesake, Cole Porter, at age 20, when he worked on a revue of the great American composer’s work. Randy Porter has since become a successful pianist known for his impeccable technique, and now his trio has teamed up with one of the region’s jazz treasures, vocalist Nancy King, on the record “Porter Plays Porter with Nancy King.” It’s up for the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

With me today is (and now he will always be known as) Grammy nominated Randy Porter, pianist, composer, teacher and Nancy King wrangler. His album with Nancy King, “Porter Plays Porter” on which they do songs by America’s greatest songwriter, Cole Porter is nominated along with Portland band Portugal the Man. Did he say, “America’s greatest songwriter?” You heard me. Go back and listen again. Randy is a musician’s musician. We hope he wins. We’re homers. Meet Randy Porter.
As the County Executive, Randy Porter essentially serves as the CEO and CFO of Putnam County. With his usual calm and steady demeanor, Randy talks to us about the daily responsibilities of his job, the things he sees on the horizon, and how serving as the EMS Director for 30 years prepared him for what he’s doing now. In this episode, Randy also shares about his faith, his family, and his values. It’s not often that we get to communicate with our elected officials on a personal level, but in this episode, we got to hear the core of our County Executive and why he feels privileged to serve our community in this capacity. Enjoy!
Portland-born Justin Hopkins is the quintessential LA story. A road more musicians are familiar with than not. Hopkins began playing multiple instruments at a young age, self-taught on guitar while simultaneously taking piano and bass lessons from NW Jazz greats Randy Porter and Phil Baker. After a brief stint playing college athletics in California, Hopkins graduated from University Oregon. Soon after, he and his band decided to pick up roots and move to the beach cities of Los Angeles, where he became a regular on an early, and emerging Hotel Cafe scene that would spawn Platinum selling careers for his peers like Sara Barielles and Mat Kearney. All at the same time Hopkins was a focused and dedicated behind the scenes songwriter/producer, behind the helm on albums for Country artists like Brett Young, and in the same evening going to write songs for R&B legend Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds. After several years and a long list of collaborations, Hopkins set out for Solo success, releasing the self-funded "Vol 1: Here Goes Nothing." The expansive, 14 track album took over 18 months to record, but received a heap of critical praise, and set Hopkins off on over 3 years of touring to support the album. He signed with Universal/Pama Records in 2007, releasing "You are where you come from." In contrast, YAWYCF was recorded in 1 week in a parish church house, in a remote village in Sweden, with Hopkins playing nearly every instrument but drums, the album solidified Hopkins' reputation in Europe as the ultimate showman and songsmith. The first single "Why would god come to LA" landed in the top 20, peaking at #10, and it would be several months till Hopkins returned to the US. Upon his return Hopkins focused on what he knew best, being a sideman and supporting other artists. He landed a gig playing with his dear friend Joe Firstman as a regular guitarist in the house band for Last call with Carson Daly. He would later get a personal call from Carson to be on his latest venture, NBC's hit show The Voice, where he landed a spot on Ceelo's team in season 2. Since then, Hopkins has kept busy touring, producing, while also being a serial Entrepreneur. Since 2009 he helped found Showkicker, a crowdbooking™ platform for live bands, developed a software called Sun Number™, that is used by Zillow to determine solar viability for homes in California and the east coast. He is currently a majority partner in an up and coming on demand Photo service called Commish™, as well as a consultant for several major emerging Cannabis companies in both Oregon and California. Most recently he has began making music on a regular basis, collaborating with grammy winners like Krish Sharma (Rolling Stones), Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow), and many more. With a wildly large catalogue of songs ranging from Country to Dance, it's clear Hopkins moves to the pulse of whatever moves him. He currently lives in Redondo Beach with his wife of 8 years and their young daughter. facebook.com/Justinhopkinsofficial twitter.com/jhopsmusicbox
