Felton Pruitt talks to Aoife O'Donovan and Ray Bonneville, both performing in Grass Valley on Saturday, April 9th.
My guest today is award winning singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player, Ray Bonneville. When it comes to playing rack harmonica, Ray might just be as good as it gets. To accompany his truth telling lyrics, he's able to seamlessly pull off complicated finger picking patterns and play elaborate counter melodies on the harmonica between verses. Often called a “song and groove man,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec, he moved to Boston at age twelve, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot's license in Colorado before living in Alaska, Seattle, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region's culture and rhythms. And then, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: After two decades working as a studio musician, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands, and living hard, Bonneville's lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music. Ray recorded his first album, On the Main, in 1992. He's since released nine albums, earned wide critical and popular acclaim, and won an enthusiastic following in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His awards include a prestigious Juno, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for his 1999 album, Gust of Wind. In 2012, Ray won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. His post-Katrina ode, “I Am the Big Easy,” earned the International Folk Alliance's 2009 Song of the Year Award, placed number one on Folk Radio's list of most-played songs of 2008, and was recently covered by Jennifer Warnes for the BMG label. Other notable artists who have recorded his songs include Ronnie Hawkins (“Foolish”) and Slaid Cleaves (“Run Jolee Run”). Ray has shared the bill with blues heavyweights Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Dr. John, J.J. Cale, and Robert Cray, and has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix, Eliza Gilkyson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and other prominent musicians. He has performed at renowned venues around the world, including South by Southwest, Folk Alliance, and Montreal International Jazz Festival, and plays over 100 shows per year across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. When not on the road, he resides in Austin, Texas. During our conversation, we chat about his early life and first musical groups, his time in the military, life as a pilot, and the finer points of songwriting. Just like Stan Rogers said we should, we did "rise again" and got to experience real, live music at Summerfolk 46 last weekend! Join host Kailey Jane Hawkins as she recounts some of her favourite festival moments (like when she got to meet the Good Lovelies and got a song shoutout from Amanda Rheaume!) and listen to some amazing local musicians showcase their stuff. It's all here, tune in today! Featuring music by Stan Rogers, Julian Taylor, The Skydiggers, Andy Elliott, Dave Hawkins, Mia Kelly, Bob Miller, Patty McLaughlin, Pete Seeger, Bill Monahan, Ray Bonneville, The Good Lovelies and Amanda Rheaume!
In celebration of the little festival that could, and was: Summerfolk 46. Since it was impossible to catch all the acts, at all the venues, here's a handy sampler of a few of the great sounds the Georgian Bay Folk Society brought to Owen Sound this year. Travel by ear around the world with Jaffa Road, Moskitto Bar, Okan and Quique Escamilla. Revel in the shimmering guitars of Tony McManus & Julia Toaspern, the heavy riffs of Terra Lightfoot and the deep groove of Ray Bonneville. Rock out with The Skydiggers, get down with the bluegrass of the Slocan Ramblers, surround yourself in the voices of Crystal Shawanda and Evangeline Gentle. And from Kurt Swinghammer, a real special cut called 'Owen Sound'. These artists performed all over the scenic city for one weekend, and for one hour only they're all together on this episode of Georgian Bay Roots!
All aboard for Summerfolk 46!! Have you got your boarding pass...I mean, tickets yet? Join host Kailey Jane Hawkins as she shares music from artists playing THIS YEAR at Summerfolk 46 AND she'll tell you which stages you can find them at...including the Marine and Rail stage, the very stage she is hosting! Tune in now to hear music by Chantal Kreviazuk, The Skydiggers, Mia Kelly, The Arrogant Worms, Joshua Arden Miller and the Pappy Johns Band, Amanda Rheaume, Katherine Wheatley, Ray Bonneville, Julian Taylor, Raven Meets Lion, Basset, Benjamin Dakota Rogers and the Good Lovelies!
Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is the on air indie show.Welcome & enjoy. Episode 50.First, music history facts for June 1st.David Bowie released his self-titled debut studio album in 1967. They released two singles from the album. “Rubber Band” and “The Laughing Gnome”. The album's failure cost Bowie his record contract with Deram Records who dropped him in April 1968.We meet Jaimee Harris today. Her debut album Red Rescue was one of the top Americana albums that year. The Congress House Sessions sophomore album released in January. An incredible release, with a stripped-down version of Red Rescue.Jaimee has earned the moniker “The Next Queen of Americana Folk” by many industry watchers. We chat about everything and anything on the show. From her music, life experiences, women in music and prison reform.Enjoy!Tracks: "Depressive State" 16:23 "Snow White Knuckles" 34:51 "Catch It Now" 42:33"Red Rescue" 57:06 Full Bio Provided by the Artist JAIMEE HARRIS“The Next Queen of Americana-Folk” (NPR)The Congress House SessionsIn 2018, everything in my life changed. In May, I left my job to pursue music full time. By August, I was on a musical rocket ship, opening shows all over the world for Mary Gauthier, who received a GRAMMY nomination in December of 2018.On paper—and on social media—it looked like a dream come true. In a lot of ways, it was. But in reality, I felt like I was drowning. — Jaimee HarrisOn the heels of her debut album Red Rescue, hailed by many as one of the top Americana albums of 2018, Jaimee Harris does not disappoint with the release of The Congress House Sessions, a thoughtful, intimate EP with stripped-down recordings of some of her most requested songs. These new recordings, recorded at the storied Congress House Studio by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Ani DiFranco, Eliza Gilkyson) and Andre Moran (Sarah Borges, Rickie Lee Jones), feature some of Austin's favorite players, including Jane Ellen Bryant and Kris Nelson on backing vocals, Ray Bonneville on harmonica, Brian Patterson on electric guitar, and Sammy Powell on piano. Don't let the healthy list of players mislead you; this is no large, speaker-rattling production. Longtime friends add color and texture, but what you'll hear is Harris and her guitar, delivering her songs in a setting closer both to what they were at their inception, alone in her room with a guitar, and how they have developed after a few years acclimating to performing without a band.Jaimee Harris loves fronting a band, and it shows. During the years she built a devoted critical and popular following in Austin, Texas, she fronted a slate of seasoned musicians with admirable swagger. When she alighted upon the scene, this jaded music city, replete with (and weary of) singer-songwriters, woke up and took notice. Here, finally, was a new voice—yes, her singing voice is noteworthy: rich, sonorous, full, delivering a uniquely stylized, throaty tone—but equally important, here was the new voice of a noteworthy writer and performer. If you meet Harris today, you'll want to be her friend. And no matter what part of the country you're in, if you spend a day with her, she will convince you to meet up at a nearby roller coaster park/pinball arcade/skeeball hall she happens to know is awesome. She will share embarrassing stories and laugh at your worst jokes (either because she finds them funny or because she finds hilarious how bad your jokes are). Later, when you watch her sing, she'll break your heart, cradle your heart, win your heart, then break it all over again. The next day, you wouldn't be the first to feel jealous. This friendly, breezy, beautiful swirl of platinum hair, impossibly high cheekbones, and a winning smile has it too easy, you think. Talent and looks? Gag me. While a cliché in this age of ubiquitous self-improvement empathy memes, it holds true that you never know what someone is going through or has been through.

Nic has been one of my best friends since I met him six years ago. He is an acclaimed harmonica player who has sat in with the likes of Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Jason Ricci, John Nemeth and Ronnie Baker Brooks. He also is a brilliant songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist who is influenced by artists like Daniel Johnston, David Dondero and Ray Bonneville. We had a fun conversation that hit on all sorts of random musical topics, one of them being what to do when you feel stagnation. This episode of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast brings a conversation with Canadian born, Austin based Roots Musician Ray Bonneville. Ray had a former life as a Marine in Viet Nam, a bush pilot in the Canadian wilderness and the leader of a garage blues band. Ray’s music came to me at the suggestion of fellow KKFI DJ John “Junebug” Stuerke, host of the weekly Blues Kitchen Show. He said I should check out Ray’s “Bad Man’s Blood;” that it would be a good fit for The Tasty Brew. He was right! Some years later, I wrangled Ray into the radio station for a live interview and performance in between private showcases during a Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas City. I don’t think I’ve missed a Ray Bonneville performance in Kansas City since. His music is blues informed but greatly influenced by the musical gumbo found in his former home of New Orleans. The tones he accomplishes with just a guitar and harmonica are uniquely his own. Before a recent Kansas City show, we had a wide ranging conversation in the Green Room, next to the railroad tracks, at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City…that at times was accompanied by train whistles, steel on the rails, horns and the country band doing sound check in the Gospel Lounge below us. Now THAT’s Americana! Enjoy a conversation with the incomparable Ray Bonneville.
Vandaag een aflevering van Stormy waarbij A.J. Croce centraal staat. Hiermee geassocieerd hoor je Randy Newman, Henny Vrienten, Huub van der Lubbe, Ray Bonneville en Tony Joe White.

It's the last full episode for 2014 and, boy, it's quite a show this week. Week in Geek: Andrew reads the metafictional sci-fi novel, Redshirts, while Dan watches a movie nobody liked or saw...and liked it: Earth to Echo. Boasts of Bethel: After having mentioned the Satoshi Kon manga, Opus, a few weeks ago, Dan discusses its meta-fictional qualities and how it both helps and hinders the comic. Discussion: Sony Pictures was hacked by a mysterious, overseas group that exposed a bunch of previously classified documents. But what is the purpose––and what is the fallout––of this latest hacking endeavor? World-Building & Storytelling: Based on a divisive article published by the Telegraph, Dan and Andrew launch into what seems to be the never-ending debate between what's most important in fantasy and/or sci-fi fiction: a highly-realized world or the stories that are told in that world? As mentioned above, this is the last regular show for the year; however, small updates will be released from now through the new year, so you won't be without your beloved For All Intents and Purposes for long. Continue to feel free to leave comments at the page for this episode at forall.libsyn.com. Or do the same (and join in on the conversations) at the official Facebook and/or Google+ pages. You may also e-mail the show at forallpod@gmail.com For all intents and purposes, that was an episode recap. Featured Music: -"Stayin' in Black" by Wax Audio -"Misty Mountains" by Howard Shore (from the soundtrack to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) -"So Long Blues" by Ray Bonneville

This past week, the amazing Martyn Joseph spent a bunch of time in town, and it was wonderful. He made some time to stop by the station to chat and play some songs for today’s show! As if that weren’t enough, we’ve got more new music, a Trout Forest Music Festival preview, and a look ahead to another upcoming house concert that promises to be equally amazing!

We’re pre-recorded this week from my basement, and that means that I have access to some discs in my CD collection that I don’t often lug down to the station. This week we dig back through the collection for some classic blues, country, and all around good stuff that you don’t always hear on the show, but maybe should.

RAY BONNEVILLE is a distinctive artist, a man who cooks up a deep blues groove, blending a unique percussive electric guitar style, a weathered voice, and soulful rack harmonica into image provoking songs that can be believed. Born in Canada, he moved to the Boston area in his early teens where he started playing guitar and harmonica. His last 30 or so years have seen him seeking adventure and playing music throughout the world. Being a dual citizen allows him the freedom to live between Montreal Canada, and Austin Texas. THOSE DARLINS are a trio of young women based out of Murfreesboro, TN. They are part Carter Family and part Ramones. The unrelated band mates are Kelley Darlin, the group's bassist, Jessi Darlin, who plays guitar, and Nikki Darlin, on baritone ukulele. Sonically, they walk the line between traditional country and punk. As the NY Times put it, "This young country trio is a tangle of bare legs, cowboy boots and Southern sass."
Pre-recorded again this week as I'm off to Ear Falls, Ont. for the Trout Forest Music Festival. For those of you stuck at home (or listening later on), some new music and some old classics, mixed in with some news and upcoming shows.
