Send us a textTo sign up for the November 16th virtual LYRIC WRITING WORKSHOP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1070697919299?aff=oddtdtcreatorMy guest today is New England based singer/songwriter Jesse Terry. Before I introduce him I wanted to let you know that on Saturday Nov. 16th I am offering a virtual 3 hour songwriting workshop.  There are a few spaces left and you can sign up through the show notes or on my website at scarletvkeys.comThis workshop will be very process oriented focused on lyric writing. You will be doing a lot of small writing exercises to sharpen your lyric writing skills.  We will work on metaphor, avoiding cliche's and literary devices used by some of the best writers.Today we will talk about his writing process, crowd funding an album with your super fans and some of the reasons he writes such beautiful melodies.  He's going to play a few song off of his new record Arcadia, released Oct. 4. And this might just be his best record yet. It's rooted in rhythmic rock & roll and sharp songwriting, Arcadia marks a turning point in Jesse Terry's career. It's the seventh original album from an award-winning musician who's spent much of the past decade on the move, playing 150 shows annually, bouncing between solo performances and full-band gigs. Arcadia captures both sides of that musical personality, finding room for amplified anthems one moment and intimate moments the next, showcasing just how wide Terry's reach can be.  Arcadia is layered with dueling electric guitars, stacked vocal harmonies, and heartland hooks, all supplied by instrumentalists like Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack), Ross McReynolds (Katie Pruitt, Becca Mancari), Sam Howard (Molly Tuttle, Joy Williams), Juan Solorzano (Ruston Kelly, Parker Millsap), and Danny Mitchell (Rodney Crowell, Anderson East). It's a big, bold sound — the sort of record that begs to be played in the car, windows rolled down, driving down the fast lane toward some new horizon. At the center of that sound is the craft Terry has been sharpening since his years in Nashville, back when he composed songs for others as a staff writer on Music Row. A grand-prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Terry established himself as a top-shelf.Jesse's new record: https://open.spotify.com/album/5lpXAMZDC4hqAU0t2AV29Z?si=SpFXPTHsSL-BidKeOtVbgghttps://www.jesseterrymusic.com/Become a podcast member:Join the "What's in a Song" membership community:https://buymeacoffee.com/scarlet.keysMixed by Peter Sykes: https://www.petersykesmusic.com/Otto Gross: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMnxx19QD-vxD4wnYGTn3JwScarlet's website:https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PPScarlet's website: https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PP55NU6E9ST6&keywords=the+craft+of+songwriting&qid=1659573139&sprefix=the+craft+of+songwritin%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1

It is a pleasure to welcome singer, songwriter, and guitarist Kyle Daniel to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  Kyle Daniel's music is a unique blend of classic Southern rock and modern country, a fusion that appeals to a wide range of music lovers. His blue-collar sound resonates in rock clubs, honky-tonks, and everywhere in between. At the heart of this distinctive sound is a guitar hero, storyteller, and songwriter who has earned his audience the old-school way: by touring relentlessly, from dive bars in Tennessee to the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, and hitting key UK festivals along the way.  Kyle, a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, began his musical journey at a young age, playing in bars before he could legally drink. His passion for music was undeniable, as he followed in his parents' footsteps to become a skilled guitarist. His early success, winning the Kentucky Blues Challenge at 17 and placing in the finals at the International Blues Challenge at 18, was just the beginning of his inspiring journey.  Later, Kyle began writing songs that showcased not only his fiery fretwork but also his songwriting chops and vocals. His debut EP, Kyle Daniel, was recorded in a single day and released independently in 2018.Even without a label's help, the self-titled record found critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone praising it for mixing "the gravely twang of Steve Earle with Chris Stapleton's range, plus bigger hooks." After spending several years as a sideman for other artists, Daniel finally claimed his share of the spotlight, brewing up his melting pot of hard-hitting American roots music.   On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kyle Daniel spoke about his lessons from Anderson East, Bob Seger, and Brandy Clark and his debut album, Kentucky Gold.Let's connect on social media! We had the pleasure of interviewing Anderson East over Zoom video!GRAMMY® Award-nominated Alabama-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and performer Anderson East has released his new album M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. The reimagined recording of his critically acclaimed studio album Maybe We Never Die is available to stream and download beginning today HERE via Elektra/Low Country Sound. Last year, East reimagined, recut, and re-recorded his fifth full-length offering, Maybe We Never Die, live in one day at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL as M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. He was accompanied by his bandmates, GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, and a handful of close friends including Natalie Hemby, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Foy Vance. Regarding M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E., East shared, “It's amazing how easy it is to make a record after you've already made it once. This was fun, and it's a scrapbook of a moment. We're used to making records with everyone in the same room. It was nice to revert back to that. I just wanted to be around people and go play something. We decided to go to FAME for a day, because it's one of our favorite rooms and the people are incredible. It felt very natural to fully simplify Maybe We Never Die at a place we enjoy.”Maybe We Never Die initially captivated fans and critics last year. The album arrived to widespread acclaim from Forbes, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Southern Living, American Songwriter, and more. East delivered unforgettable performances of the album's lead single “Madelyn” on Late Night with Seth Meyers, CBS Saturday Morning, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and celebrated the album's release with his 49-city Maybe We Never Die Tour of North America, which wrapped earlier this month. Now, M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. represents Anderson East at his most vulnerable, vibrant, and vital.ABOUT ANDERSON EAST:GRAMMY® Award-nominated Alabama-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and performer Anderson East has always seamlessly trafficked between heritage soul, Americana, gospel, R&B, blues, roots, and rock. Following his independent debut Flowers of the Broken Hearted [2012], he continued to hone his voice and vision on Delilah [2015] and Encore [2018]. In addition to eclipsing 100 million streams, the latter yielded the single “All on My Mind,” which notably garnered a 2019 GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of “Best American Roots Performance.” In between sold out headline gigs in historic venues such as the Ryman, he delivered soaring and scorching performances on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, TODAY, Late Night with Seth Meyers, PBS' Austin City Limits, and more. Maybe We Never Die arrived to widespread tastemaker acclaim in 2021. Forbes raved, “Maybe We Never Die is fit for dancing through the end of the world,” NPR noted, “his hefty vocals seem only more urgent in this subdued setting,” and American Songwriter praised, “characterized by his gentle, We want to hear from you! The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, we feature a conversation with one of most admired and sharp-witted singer-songwriters in the fertile Nashville Americana scene, Caroline Spence. A sought-after lyricist who mines her own vulnerabilities and lovelorn past to tell delicately crafted story-songs, her voice seems to always hover angelically above the page, bringing to mind new-wave country pop heroines Alison Krauss or her vocal hero, Emmylou Harris. Growing up in Charlottesville, VA daydreaming to Harris' signature twangy honey-toned records like 'Wrecking Ball,' Spence admittedly was a bit starstruck when the silver-maned lady herself came on board to sing harmonies on the title track of Spence's newest LP 'Mint Condition.' It quickly became a critic's darling and an Americana radio staple nationwide. As a conversationalist, she usually leads with cheerful southern modesty, but beginning with her 2015 debut 'Somehow,' Spence wasn't afraid to push at country music's guy-centric boundaries. She brought aboard a talented group of genre-defining collaborators like blue-eyed soul hero Anderson East and folk pop favorite Erin Rae to give the songs new heft. Her follow-up 'Spades And Roses' brought more lush atmospherics to her yearning acoustic stories, elevating the clear-eyed feminine power behind emotive songs like “Heart Of Somebody.” While Spence will tell you she is just furthering the empowered spirit of roots songwriter pioneers who came before her, during this time of high anxiety, her deeply felt love songs like “Sit Here and Love Me” and “Slow Dancer” seem especially fitting, touching on her bouts of depression and her inability to connect with the ones who are trying to help her through. Sometimes sad songs truly do make people happy, and if you're feeling a bit low, maybe pop on her newest single “The Choir,” about finding your people when you need them most.

Solo artist. Frontman. Behind-the-scenes songwriter. For more than a decade, Adam Hood has left his mark both onstage and in the writing room, carving out a southern sound that mixes equal parts country, soul and American roots music. It's a sound that began shape in Opelika, Alabama. Raised by working-class parents, Hood started playing hometown shows as a 16 year-old, landing a weekly residency at a local restaurant. He'd perform there every Friday and Saturday night, filling his set list with songs by John Hiatt, Hank Williams Jr, and Vince Gill. As the years progressed, the gigs continued — not only in his home state, but across the entire country. Eventually even landing himself a three-year nationwide tour opening for Leon Russell. These days, though, Hood is no longer just putting his own stamp on the songs of chart-topping country stars. Instead, many of those acts -- including Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Anderson East, Josh Abbott Band, Lee Ann Womack & Brent Cobb -- are playing his songs. In 2016, Hood signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Nashville and GRAMMY Award-winning producer Dave Cobb's Low Country Sound. All while remaining adamantly focused on his own career, playing around 100 shows annually promoting third solo release, Welcome to the Big World, and now his newest release, Somewhere in Between. A showcase for both his frontman abilities and songwriting chops, Somewhere in Between shines a light on Hood's strength as a live performer. He recorded most of the album live at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios over two quick days. Teaming up with friend and producer Oran Thornton (Miranda Lambert's Revolution, Angaleena Presley's Wrangled) their goal was to create something that reflected the raw, real sound of his concerts, where overdubs and unlimited takes are never an option. The result is a record that reflects Hood's working-class roots, mixing the upbeat thrill of his roadhouse roots-rock songs with the contemplative, stripped-down sway of his country ballads. Joining him in the studio were guitarist Pat McLaughlin, bassist Lex Price, and drummer Jerry Roe. All of whom captured their parts in just a handful of live takes while Hood simultaneously tracked his vocals. Stripped free of studio trickery and lushly layered arrangements, Somewhere in Between is an honest, story-driven record. One that's both relatable and deeply autobiographical, with Hood writing or co-writing ten of the record's eleven tracks, alongside friends like McLaughlin, Brent Cobb -- who also appears on the electrified "She Don't Love Me" -- Josh Abbott, Jason Eady, and plenty of others. Somewhere in Between is an album that finally finds Hood telling his own story. A dedicated family man, he wrote "Locomotive" — a heartland anthem, full of Telecaster twang and sunny swagger — after watching his young daughter develop her motor skills while playing with a set of blocks. Balancing his life as a relentless road-warrior, Hood penned highway ballad "Downturn" about a life filled with wanderlust and long drives from gig to gig. As a blue-collar songwriter, Hood shines a light on everyday experiences — from family and friends to the thrill of Friday nights. Partly because he's stuck to his roots. The native Alabaman still lives in the Yellowhammer State and celebrates America's rural pockets with songs like "Keeping Me Here" and "Real Small Town," two songs filled with images of main streets, open landscapes, hard times, and good people. "It's southern music," he says, grouping Somewhere in Between's wide range of music under an appropriate banner. "That's what it represents: the soulful side of southern music, the country side of southern music, the genuineness of southern culture, and the way I grew up. One of the t-shirts I sell at every show simply says ‘Southern Songs,' and It's a good summary of what I do. It's what I've always done."

The Vinyl Supper with Foy Vance

Foy greets musician and old friend Anderson East for his first ‘last' dinner. Anderson East came to fame with his albums Delilah and Encore, and catapulted even further with his turn on the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. Foy and Anderson hit the ground running with stories of literal purple rain falling in Minnesota bars, and their food choices are just as enlightening. The joy of jalapenos, a feta cheese and coriander sauce, and the difference between a proper catch up and Fancy Ketchup, and that's just getting us started. The two dig deeper to talk about the childhood joy of music, entertainment as a caveman instinct, and a possible last moment with The Godfather and pizza. But don't worry, Anderson finds plenty of time to opine on the possibility of pairing oysters with a McDonald's cheeseburger and the art of ‘not giving a fuck.' The two go deep and go easy but end on the note that no matter what happens in quarantine, music isn't going anywhere. This episode was recorded in June 2020. Visit TheVinylSupper.com for more information on this podcast and video series.

The Vinyl Supper with Foy Vance

If you miss having dinner with friends, grab a seat at Foy's table. On The Vinyl Supper, Foy Vance chats songs and food with old friends and special guests. During each episode, Foy has a lively discussion with his guest about what three courses they'd eat and what music they'd listen to at their last meal. And of course, they catch up and chew the fat with moments of levity amidst the cathartic reflection. Foy's pals talk about everything from pairing burgers with oysters to Japanese beef and redneck sushi. Conversations meander through global tours and global lockdown, losing loved ones and winning Grammys, reflecting on life before and during quarantine. As it turns out, you can tell a lot about a person by their favorite food and music. Foy recorded The Vinyl Supper while quarantining in the hills of his hometown of Aberfeldy, Scotland. His season one guests have enough Golden Globes, Grammys, Emmys & Billboard Awards to fill several supper tables: Anderson East, Atticus, Benny Blanco, Blake Mills, Bruce Cockburn, Chrissy Metz, Courteney Cox, Devin Dawson, Josh Groban, Keith Urban and Passenger.

It's Time...for the 58th installment of #TBKoW. The #GoodBrothers open things up with more #Blues and #Soul this week. We play a little ditty from the delicious Anderson East and touch on the Blues and Soul movement running wild in the world of #music. Boy I tell yah, Youngblood can hit a note. Somehow this leads us into a non-update update on the Conor McGregor sexual assault accusations and the Jon Jones issue with, not-so delicious, Cinnamon. Uncle Boobah then talks about his week long debacle with #Amazon and #AmazonLogistics and Ole catches us up on his week with his #family. We finally get into this week's episode by taking a few moments to remember the #victims, their families and friends, and anyone affected by the egregious amount of gun violence that occurred within the past 7 days. We discuss the El Paso, Dayton Ohio, and Gilroy California shootings, as well as, looking into the gang violence that occurred in Chicago over the weekend causing a local hospital to close. This is, of course, a real issue in our country today. We look into the often avoided subject of #mentalhealth and its impact in gun violence. As much as we don't want to, this leads us to a #political discussion on #gunviolence and what true, unadulterated gun reform should look like (just blatantly repealing the 2nd Amendment will not help). This lead us into our weekly politics update, specifically the second round of the #Democratic #Presidential #Debates. Thankfully we do not go as in-depth as the first debate, but we'll touch on a few subjects and who is looking like they'll move on to the next round. We'll wrap things by analyzing Mario Lopez's recent comment, and subsequent apology, about parents and their impact on their child's gender identity. We give an update on the spread of #EasternEquineEncephalitis by mosquitoes, the deplorable acts of someone on the Gacha Life Kids Phone App, a convicted Child Molester that was beaten to death by other inmates in a #Florida #CorrectionalFacility, and Russia's floating Nuclear Power Plant, eloquently dubbed "Chernobyl on Ice". And always as a reminder, remember to be kind to one another. We need this now more than ever. Stop with all the #bullying. Stop ridiculing one another. Ask someone how they're doing. Smile at a stranger. This may be the one thing that makes the most change in a person's day. As mama always said, "If you ain't got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all". #BeKind Oh, and you won't get any money from Equifax. #SorryBoutYourDamnLuck Music - “If You Keep Leaving Me” by Anderson East Drink Sponsor - Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey and High Quality H2O Show support for our Network by picking up some Merch (http://bit.ly/TBKoWShop). The title is a lyric from the newest Jamestown Revival record, San Isabel. The song is, "This Too Shall Pass." The Hunts - Darlin' Oh Darlin' (2018) The Hollering Pines - Long Nights, Short Lives and Spilled Chances (2013) The Bones of J.R. Jones - The Bones of J.R. Jones (he's a solo artist) Rickie Lee Jones - Kicks (2019) American Aquarium - Wolves (2015) Kylie Rae Harris - Kylie Rae Harris EP (2019) And of course, I'm listening to the usual suspects as well. Mandolin Orange is still aways a big player. Anderson East, Jade Bird, James Morrison and Josh Ritter. There's so much good music. Music and solitude go hand in hand for me. And writing. Sometimes drawing, which more closely resembles doodling these days. All this listening to music violates the true meaning of solitude - which is defined by psychology in a way not quite to my liking. Solitude is the state of being alone without being lonely. The authors of a book, Lead Yourself First, give a more detailed definition that I rather like. Solitude is a state of mind, a space where you can focus on your own thoughts without distraction, with a power to bring mind and soul together in clear-eyed conviction. Simply put, it's freedom from distraction. Technically listening to music violates the definition I suppose. But I count it anyway. Lyrics and melodies provoke thoughts, but I consider that a positive distraction. It feeds my solitude. It's part of rest, restoration and rejuvenation. A Coat Of Armor We all have one. Because we all need one. Every now and again. Truthfully, I think we need one more often than not. Sorta like being fully clothed. We spend most of our time being fully clothed. Okay, I won't get into a modesty debate just here, but you know what I mean. ;) Not many people see me running around in my boxers and a t-shirt. It's a select few. So it is with exposing ourselves sans armor. It's just not safe most of the time. Armor is protection. You're likely thinking of the armor worn by knights in medieval days. Or maybe you're thinking of the body armor worn by today's soldiers or law enforcement officers. Here in Texas, you could even be thinking of armadillos. We need armor to protect against attacks. From people intending to harm us. Armor can also signify resilience, our ability to protect ourselves against adversity. Circumstances. Events. People. Situations. It's not bad. It's necessary. And part of how we all must live our lives. Introversion Versus Extroversion Of all the personality traits these seem the most talked about. They're the biggest elephants in the room often used to describe ourselves or others. I can only speak to my own introversion, which is part of my armor. Just like an extrovert deploys that quality as part of her armor. My introversion appears quite frequently like extroversion. Somebody smarter than me will have to explain it. My way of looking at it is based on my internal energy. When my armor is weakened, I retreat. It's one way I can refuel and attempt to fortify myself. Attempt being the operative word. ;) I suspect extroverts do the opposite. When their armor is weakened, they likely seek the company of others in their effort to recharge and renew strength. Such is the individual nature of our armor - whatever characteristics and qualities make up our armor are largely individual to us. While it's true that we're much more alike than not, it's the subtle nuances of our personalities that make us US. In medieval days a big part of the armor was the shield. You could judge a knight by his shield. It was a primary identifier. For whom is this knight fighting? Who and what does he represent? Our armor,

Cobb first heard Chris Stapleton’s classic country delivery through the tinny speaker of an iPhone and was so taken he swore he’d someday work with the Kentucky-born singer. Eight years later they celebrated an all-genre Album of the Year nomination for “Traveller” at the 58th annual Grammy Awards. He also heard something special in Jason Isbell, Anderson East, and Brandi Carlisle. His work with all those distinct, genre-bending voices has earned him widespread critical acclaim and an additional nomination for Producer of the Year. Cobb has made some of the most respected and critically acclaimed albums to come out of Music City in recent years. He made Sturgill Simpson a reluctant star with “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music”. And Jason Isbell No. 1 in three genres with rock, country and folk chart-topper “Something More Than Free”. This year his work on Brandi Carlisle's recent album cleaned up at the Grammies. I had the pleasure of speaking with Dave Cobb at the historic RCA Studio A in Nashville, which was built by Chet Atkins himself during the golden age of country music in Nashville. Dave has recently taken over the stewardship of that room and has created a string of incredible records while remaining humble and somewhat in awe of his surroundings. It was a pleasure to spend some time with him - enjoy my conversation with Dave Cobb, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

Rock'N Vino: A Pairing of Music & Wine

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 7, 2019 21:07

The Rock'N Vino podcast sits down with BottleRock Co-Founder and Partner of BottleRock Presents Dave Graham about this year's line-up. Find out about what's new, what's happening, and what to expect from the year's festival as long as a breakdown from Coco and Mike on this year's line-up. NAPA — BottleRock Napa Valley producers today unveiled the lineup for the seventh incarnation of their annual wine country festival, held at the Napa Valley Expo between May 24 and 26—Memorial Day weekend. This year's lineup features a new twist with the festival featuring dual headlining sets each night. Friday includes alt-rockers Imagine Dragons and rapper Logic. Saturday has Neil Young and Promise of the Real, along with R&B superstar Pharrell Williams. Rootsy rock band Mumford & Sons and guitar virtuoso Santana will close out the festival on Sunday, May 26. The lineup again features more than 80 artists over the three days. "We've expanded the capability of the second stage," BottleRock CEO Dave Graham said. "We wanted to be able to attract some major acts to play the second stage at the same time the main stage was playing, and that's exactly what we did this year." The bill is rounded out by a slate of eclectic artists, including Sylvan Esso, OneRepublic, Flogging Molly, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Cypress Hill, Tash Sultana, Lord Huron, Big Boi, Bishop Briggs, Jeff Goldbum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and others. Graham said the addition of Young is particularly meaningful this year. "Neil Young has not performed in the Bay Area, publicly, since the last Bridge School Benefit Concert back in 2016," he said. "What an honor for us to have a legend like him up on our stage." BottleRock will again feature it's culinary stage pairing celebrity chefs with musicians, actors and Bay Area luminaries cooking up unique dishes for festivalgoers, along with the festival's focus on the region's best food and wine. The culinary stage lineup will be announced in April. "This year, BottleRock is also a part of the prize offerings for [TV show] Top Chef, so the winner will get an appearance on the Culinary Stage this year," Graham said. Last year, more than 120,000 camp out to see performances by Bruno Mars, The Killers, Muse and others. Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the festival's website. Prices range from $359 for a three-day general admission pass up to $1,599 for a three-day Skydeck and VIP Viewing passes. Platinum Passes for BottleRock, which cost upwards of $4,000, are sold out. Singer/Songwriter Adam Hood knows the dual life of living in small town America while traveling as a singer/songwriter. “Somewhere In Between” is an ode to the people, the pace and what it means to leave a small town for a different life than what you know. The Alabama native’s album was recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios and was produced by Oran Thornton who also produced Miranda Lambert 'Revolution,' Eric Church 'Caught In The Act: Live,' and Angaleena Presley 'Wrangled’. Hood is most known for co-writing songs like Brent Cobb’s “King of Alabama,” Anderson East’'s “”Surrender"” and album cuts recorded by Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town and Lee Ann Womack. The album’s latest track “Easy Way,” is co-written with Pat McLaughlin and premiered on Billboard. The video for the “loose country rocker” (Rolling Stone Country) “She Don’t Love Me” is also on CMT and features fellow songwriter Brent Cobb. We chat about the song “The Heart of A Queen,” “Alabama Moon” and others. Adam does spend his time somewhere in between his home state of Alabama and Nashville and chat about how that works for him and his career.

I first heard about Anderson East from a friend in New Jersey, who I trust implicitly with music recommendations and such. He’s the guy that turned us on to Marcus King, so as you can imagine, when he says I need to check something out, I usually obey and listen. We actually posted pictures on our instagram channel back in January of Anderson’s gig at the Bowery Ballroom. Truth is, I cannot say enough about this young dude’s tremendous talent as a singer-songwriter, but to say he is exclusively that, also doesn’t tell the whole tale. Anderson’s vocal stylings will make you think of R&B and Soul singers of days gone by, but his lyrics, will conjour up images of love lost, good times and plenty more. Eric recollects his DJ background at WIZN and WEZF and his experience working with the Burlington-based band, Currently Nameless. Beyond Andrew's experience in Citizen Bare, which started in 2007, Andrew plays live music out with his wife, Elizabeth, as The Owl Stars. Attention turns to radio, both large wattage, low wattage with The Radiator from Burlington and college radio, including WWPV, where Eric D. hosted a show for four years from 1998 to 2002. Eric D's desire to share more music has led to the creation of a private Facebook group called 'Long Tall Road', which is meant to share underground music and events in Northern Vermont. You can request to join here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1940349699560254/ Don't miss Tyler Childers and Anderson East coming to Higher Ground soon. They discuss CDs and the Live Music Archive (http://www.archive.org) and nugs.net and how the distribution model has changed in the music industry. Songwriting gets discusssed, after Eric D. hears Chris Stapleton for the first time with Justin Timberlake on the CMA in 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSfQw-Qhr14 and recently listened to him on the Joe Rogan podcast (which you can listen to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26JaoS-zbz8) Eric D. attended Higher Ground's debut show on April 15, 1998, where Everything and Agents of Good Roots played. They chat through some of the behemoths of the Vermont music scene over the years, including Phish, Belizbeha, Smokin' Grass, viperHouse, Twiddle and Seth Yacovone. National touring acts get touched on, including The Tedeschi Trucks Bands and The Wood Brothers, who played together in Essex Junction, VT in 2017. Eric D. recollects seeing Smooth Hound Smith opening for The Record Company at Higher Ground and The Barr Brothers, who Andrew was recently introduced to by Eric D. Venues get discussed including the Stowe Performing Arts Center (RIP), the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds, the Shelburne Museum and the Lake Champlain Waterfront in downtown Burlington, ArtsRiot, Nectar's, Radio Bean and the Light Club Lamp Shop. The City of Burlington, all 50,000 people of it, is addressed, including the beauty and draw that the Queen City is. Working Class Audio Session #097 with Matt Ross-Spang!!! Matt Ross-Spang , born in Memphis, began working at the Legendary Sun Studio when he was just 16, working his way up from intern to the Chief Engineer. He championed to bring the recording studio back to its origin, working hard to find, install and use the same period equipment that Sam Phillips engineered with in the 1950s. His 11 years of dedication to Sun and its signature sound garnered national attention when he was featured by Lester Holt for NBC’s Nightly News and the Today Show. NPR also featured Matt and his work on All Things Considered. "It's fantastic that [Ross-Spang] has pursued this with such scholarly devotion," says Peter Guralnick, author of the definitive, two-part Presley biography, Last Train to Memphis and the recently released biography, Sam Phillips The Man Who Invented Rock and Roll.. "Sam was systematic in thinking about sound and gave great thought to it — no square angles; the tiles. In addition, he felt there was something unique about the room at 706 Union. He didn't know it when he rented it. To have reconstituted it is an exercise in creative archeology." In 2015 Matt left Sun to venture out on his own as an engineer and producer.  His first project post Sun was to engineer and mix Jason Isbell’s “Something More Than Free” for acclaimed Producer Dave Cobb which would award him his first Grammy. The record broke several records debuting at #1 on the Country, Rock, Folk and Indie Charts. It also broke Americana Radio chart records , staying #1 for over 25 weeks. The record won Grammys for Best Americana Album and Best Americana Song for (24 Frames). Since then Matt hasn’t slowed down ...engineering recent releases by The Drive By Truckers, Elle King, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Isaak, The Rival Sons, Corb Lund, Lori Mckenna, Brett Dennen, Brent Cobb, Amanda Shires, Anderson East, The Sheepdogs and the concept album “Southern Family”. Matt also engineered, mixed and Co-Produced Margo Price’s debut album; entitled “Midwestern Farmer’s Daughter” the record was made in 3 days in 2014 at Sun Studio and released on Third Man Records. The record debuted in the top 10 Billboard country charts to critical acclaim and is already considered one of the best albums of 2016. Matt most recently was hired by Sony Records to mix 18 previously unreleased songs by Elvis Presley from historic 1976 sessions in the Jungle Room at Graceland which was released in August of 2016. Matt also recently produced albums on Sean Rowe, Patrick Sweany and UK artist Emily Barker. The City of Memphis named him one of its “30 under 30” Memphians in 2015 as well as honoring him with a key to the city in 2016. The City of Germantown also named a day after Ross-Spang in 2016. Matt and Matt join each other over Skype for a conversation about's Matt's journey.
