Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Guitarist and songwriter David Grissom is on the show this week! Anyone who knows anything about the guitar knows Grissom is a monster player, and has been a key element of albums for Joe Ely and John Mellencamp, and then with the band Storyville. But what I wasn't really aware of was his extensive list of session work he did here in Nashville during the early 2000's. For a good 10 years or so, Nashville session work was kind of his main thing. He played on huge records for artists like Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Lee ann Womack, Montgomery Gentry, Billy Ray Cyrus and Brooks and Dunn. But he also maintained his work on the rootsier side of things, writing for, touring with or playing on records for Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Eliza Gilkyson, Chris Isaak, Rita Coolidge and lots more. So all this to say we had alot to talk about. I wanted to dig into that session scene in the early 2000's and see what was going on at that point. We had a great talk about all the aspects of his career, making some of the classic records he was involved in, how he got into music in the first placxe and his current band and regular gigs around Austin, TX. We also get a little nerdy and talk about his signature Paul Reed Smith guitars closer to the end.You can get all the info on David, his recordings, live albums, and weekly gig at: www.davidgrissom.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. Please leave a review on Apple Podcasts - it really helps get the show heard by more folks! Twice 5 Miles Radio, hosted by James Navé, welcomes two-time Grammy Award nominee singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson to the microphone. Songs From the River Wind is the title of this show and the title of Eliza's latest record.   Eliza has twenty-five records to her credit, starting in 1969 with Eliza '69 and continuing with Songs From the River Wind in 2022. Since Eliza and I live in Taos, I recently visited her for dinner and her husband, Bob Jensen, and my creative collaborator Allegra Huston.  The dinner conversation ranged from life on the road as a touring musician, old Taos adobe houses, the ins and outs of teaching songwriting compared to teaching poetry, and, of course, the state of the world. After dinner, we strolled across the field in Eliza's backyard, walking and talking on what seemed like the roof of the world under the dusk darkening star popping sky.  When we left, Eliza offered me her CD, Songs from the River Wind, which I happily took and immediately started playing in my car CD player. Yes, my car has a CD player. While it's a bit retro, it certainly does the job with Eliza's lovely songs. Of course, you can also listen to all of Eliza's musical work on YouTube and other digital platforms. Speaking of listening, enjoy this interview and all that Eliza has to say.

But this episode is not about mutually assured destruction, per se. If I'm missing any other Star Trek episodes that tackle the subject, let me know! It's "The Man in the High Castle," not "Man in the High Tower," and it is indeed based on the novel of the same name, written by Philip K. Dick.Slaid is entirely correct about Star Trek's Nielson ratings in the 60's. When Star Trek aired on NBC, its ratings were low, and the network cancelled it in its third season. It's useful to keep in mind, however, that at the time the vast majority of TV viewers were watching only three broadcast networks: ABC, CBS, or NBC. So even a show with "low ratings" in the 60's would have commanded a much larger audience than a show with "low ratings" today. So it's kind of hard to make comparisons today. But its true that Star Trek didn't really become the hit show that it is today with its cult following and influence on popular culture until the 70's, when it was in syndication. Is Q, and the coinciding Q Continuum, immortal? The much loved character Q, from Star Trek: Next Generation is an omnipotent being with the ability to control time and space at will. Q is part of a collective, the Q Continuum, which exists in another dimension not accessible or understandable to humans. Q is not a benevolent being. He is better described as bored than benevolent. Although he has a fascination with Picard and with humanity and its historical outcomes, he is at times antagonistic and arbitrarily cruel. Trelane, the antagonist of this episode, "The Squire of Gothos," is a precursor to Q. The question of whether or not Q can decline or die has been recently raised as a possible plot line in the newest season of Star Trek: Picard, currently airing on Paramount Plus.

In 2021 I saw that John Gorka, was performing a virtual concert—so I bought tickets, set up a video projector, and watched him in my living room with my wife and my two boys.  It was a moment of light in a dark time.  So, when it came time to put together Restoring Memory: A COVIDCalls exploration of the first 2 COVID years, I took a chance and reached out—and well, he's here! From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania.  Jack Hardy's legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) was a powerful source of education and encouragement early in his career, and he won the New Folk Award in 1984 at Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector's edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John's greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio. Many well known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O'Connell. John has played all over the USA and Europe at hallowed venues like Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateEliza Gilkyson is a middle child, a constant reinventor of herself and a surprise teacher of songwriting. Her father, the acclaimed folk singer/songwriter Terry Gilkyson, moved his family to California in the late 1940's to pursue a career in folk music. He found success with his group The Easy Riders and as a staff songwriter for Disney. He wrote songs for animated films and most famously "Bear Necessities" from The Jungle Book, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Terry greatly influenced Eliza's style with a love of melody, natural talent and visceral writing. Young Eliza spent time in the southwestern US soaking in the sounds of "western folk." That sound encompasses her new album Songs From the River Wind (out on Jan 14, 2022). She's spent many years going back and forth from New Mexico to California, to Austin, Texas and back to New Mexico again. The pandemic and settling into her third act put a lot of things into perspective, including officially moving 100% to her beloved Taos, New Mexico. The new album is not political, which is unusual for Eliza, who's been known to write pointed political scorchers on her records. Lots of these songs and sounds are encompassing a time gone by featuring moments of joy and beauty. The sounds of the album completely encapsulate her dad's trademark style, led by Taos band The 'Rifters, who accompany Eliza this time around. Eliza's embarking on another new reinvention of herself, which she has been known to do over the course of her amazing life. Most famously, at 50 years old around the year 2000, Gilkyson reclaimed the identity of "folk singer" and released her career-affirming and changing album Hard Times in Babylon. That record unlocked her writing and set her on a path of authentic creation in her music and she has not looked back. Here's to constant reinvention!   Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

My guest today is award winning singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player, Ray Bonneville. When it comes to playing rack harmonica, Ray might just be as good as it gets. To accompany his truth telling lyrics, he's able to seamlessly pull off complicated finger picking patterns and play elaborate counter melodies on the harmonica between verses. Often called a “song and groove man,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec, he moved to Boston at age twelve, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot's license in Colorado before living in Alaska, Seattle, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region's culture and rhythms. And then, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: After two decades working as a studio musician, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands, and living hard, Bonneville's lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music. Ray recorded his first album, On the Main, in 1992. He's since released nine albums, earned wide critical and popular acclaim, and won an enthusiastic following in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His awards include a prestigious Juno, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for his 1999 album, Gust of Wind. In 2012, Ray won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. His post-Katrina ode, “I Am the Big Easy,” earned the International Folk Alliance's 2009 Song of the Year Award, placed number one on Folk Radio's list of most-played songs of 2008, and was recently covered by Jennifer Warnes for the BMG label. Other notable artists who have recorded his songs include Ronnie Hawkins (“Foolish”) and Slaid Cleaves (“Run Jolee Run”). Ray has shared the bill with blues heavyweights Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Dr. John, J.J. Cale, and Robert Cray, and has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix, Eliza Gilkyson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and other prominent musicians. He has performed at renowned venues around the world, including South by Southwest, Folk Alliance, and Montreal International Jazz Festival, and plays over 100 shows per year across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. When not on the road, he resides in Austin, Texas. During our conversation, we chat about his early life and first musical groups, his time in the military, life as a pilot, and the finer points of songwriting. Eliza Gilkyson has been making records for more than 50 years, and has covered everything from love and longing to political and topical songwriting. Her latest, 'Songs From the River Wind', has more of an old-West vibe as she takes a second look at some of the songs her father, Terry Gilkyson, wrote and recorded, and updates them from her own perspective. This kind of collaboration across time is not unfamiliar to folkies, but most songwriters who decide to rewrite old ballads will typically scrap all the lyrics and write them anew. Gilkyson, instead, decided to cowrite with her late father and present these adaptations alongside plenty of new originals. The result is a creative commentary on the legacies we leave and how the people who pick them up will do with them what they will. No better songwriter to do that than Eliza Gilkyson—the latest guest on 'Why We Write with Kim Ruehl.'

I might be a Universal Unitarian after this one! Erin Walter, the vocalist and bassist from Parker Woodland calls in from Estes Park Colorado to talk to us about her passion for her music, the ideas that permeate her writing, and what she did during quarantine.Austin, Texas indie-rock collective Parker Woodland has been fighting the good fight to share the healing powers of music even before the pandemic hit. And when it did, they doubled down. The band's driving force is inspiring songwriter/vocalist/bassist Erin Walter, a Unitarian Universalist minister, activist for Girls Rock Camp and a whirlwind of positivity. Instead of sitting things out for the year, Walter and company released the “propulsive” (Austin American Statesman) EP The World Is On Fire (And We Still Fall In Love) in February and launched a 80-city virtual tour which includes UU churches, a festival for peace with Willie Nelson and Eliza Gilkyson, a Girls Rock Camp SXSW event and festival, a women's conference, and Play For The Vote (Beyonce, Paul McCartney, Adele and Aretha Franklin also performed) to remind people of the good things that connect us despite the hardships life throws at us. The tour continues at least through August (more info here). While the band started as a trio of friends with Walter, Strait Music's Dan McMonigle on guitar, and DJ/artist Ralph Cutler on drums, during the pandemic Parker Woodland has evolved into a diverse collective of musicians which has resulted in even more exuberant and lively performances than before. With the ongoing virtual tour, a livestream video trilogy release party and discussion with the video creators and actual live performances to be announced soon, you can bet when those live shows happen they will be even more uplifting and explosive than before. In the meantime, there is plenty to experience online. “The World's On Fire trilogy is my documentation of Austin band life, from practice space to studio, the garage to the stage to the road,” Walter said. “I hope the videos celebrate how special the Austin music community is and remind everyone how much we have to look forward to as we emerge from the pandemic. Though some things will be forever changed, like losing Music Lab, music is the magic that brings us together.WEBSITE | SPOTIFY | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | YOUTUBE // LYRICS | RADIO EDITS | PRODUCTION CREDITS | PHOTOS

In May, I left my job to pursue music full time.  By August, I was on a musical rocket ship, opening shows all over the world for Mary Gauthier, who received a GRAMMY nomination in December of 2018.On paper—and on social media—it looked like a dream come true.  In a lot of ways, it was.  But in reality, I felt like I was drowning.                 — Jaimee HarrisOn the heels of her debut album Red Rescue, hailed by many as one of the top Americana albums of 2018, Jaimee Harris does not disappoint with the release of The Congress House Sessions, a thoughtful, intimate EP with stripped-down recordings of some of her most requested songs.  These new recordings, recorded at the storied Congress House Studio by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Ani DiFranco, Eliza Gilkyson) and Andre Moran (Sarah Borges, Rickie Lee Jones), feature some of Austin's favorite players, including Jane Ellen Bryant and Kris Nelson on backing vocals, Ray Bonneville on harmonica, Brian Patterson on electric guitar, and Sammy Powell on piano.  Don't let the healthy list of players mislead you; this is no large, speaker-rattling production.  Longtime friends add color and texture, but what you'll hear is Harris and her guitar, delivering her songs in a setting closer both to what they were at their inception, alone in her room with a guitar, and how they have developed after a few years acclimating to performing without a band.Jaimee Harris loves fronting a band, and it shows.  During the years she built a devoted critical and popular following in Austin, Texas, she fronted a slate of seasoned musicians with admirable swagger. When she alighted upon the scene, this jaded music city, replete with (and weary of) singer-songwriters, woke up and took notice.  Here, finally, was a new voice—yes, her singing voice is noteworthy: rich, sonorous, full, delivering a uniquely stylized, throaty tone—but equally important, here was the new voice of a noteworthy writer and performer.  If you meet Harris today, you'll want to be her friend.  And no matter what part of the country you're in, if you spend a day with her, she will convince you to meet up at a nearby roller coaster park/pinball arcade/skeeball hall she happens to know is awesome.  She will share embarrassing stories and laugh at your worst jokes (either because she finds them funny or because she finds hilarious how bad your jokes are).  Later, when you watch her sing, she'll break your heart, cradle your heart, win your heart, then break it all over again. The next day, you wouldn't be the first to feel jealous.  This friendly, breezy, beautiful swirl of platinum hair, impossibly high cheekbones, and a winning smile has it too easy, you think.  Talent and looks?  Gag me.  While a cliché in this age of ubiquitous self-improvement empathy memes, it holds true that you never know what someone is going through or has been through.

Escuchar audio

We welcome Tucker Biddlecombe with the debut of Music In The Listening Place, a collection of choral works performed by the Vanderbilt University Chorale and conducted by Biddlecombe. Biddlecombe demonstrates masterful programming in his ability to curate a modern listening experience based on mostly classical texts. Of particular note is Three Songs of Faith, an elegant collection of settings of e.e. cummings texts by Eric Whitacre. In a similar vein are the delicate Trois Chansons of Maurice Ravel. A particular gem is Three Settings of Ezra Pound, composed by PARMA artist Michael Slayton. Eliza Gilkyson’s “Requiem” is unlike any other. Sweet and nostalgic, this hymn for the departed draws innocence from the youthful voices of the Chorale. Another highlight is David Dickau’s exquisite setting of If Music Be the Food of Love, through which the Chorale expresses remarkable balance and dynamic facility. Also included on the album are several text settings by composer Jonathan Dove; an arrangement of the traditional Indodana, as well as settings by Alf Houkum, Daniel Read, and James Mulholland. Truly, Biddlecombe captures the joy and sophistication of all things choral with this enchanting recording. In The Name of God”. Joan Baez heard the song playing on the radio and pulled over to make sure she knew whose song it was because she wanted to sing it. Baez covered it on her 2018 Grammy-winning album. A candid conversation with Eliza Gilkyson. She discusses her amazing release, "2020." A plea for peace and unity during the harrowing times is a running theme throughout the songs on this record, which easily is a contender for this year's best album. Your interviewer is Allen Larman. The unravelling of America. The show tonight inspired by what is essentially a pretty sad article from rolling stone.com Songs about melting down. Heavy stuff from Bohannons and Drive by Truckers, Eliza Gilkyson. Includes fresh observations from Sammy Brue, prophetic Neil Young from On The Beach, dark, dark, SOngs:Ohia and the genius of Purple Mountains, all lightened up with a shot of Linda Rondstat. (Check how the second verse in Poor Poor Pitiful Me could be a #metoo song). That marathon new Bob Dylan track Murder Most Foul and then some thoughts and prayers towards the end with Cowboy Junkies and Los Lobos. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/political-commentary/covid-19-end-of-american-era-wade-davis-1038206/
