Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager.  He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s.  RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

Jason Ricci joins me on episode 93 (and on episode 94)In part one: Jason tells us how he started out in a punk band, with his bandmates suggesting he take up the harmonica. Of course, he took to it quickly, to become quite possibly the leading diatonic harmonica player of his generation. After initially developing his blues playing via the classic players, Jason moved to Memphis and developed his signature fast licks under the guidance of Pat Ramsey. Then, after getting into jazz and a brief flirtation with the saxophone, he started playing overblows, inspired by Howard Levy and the more blues based approach of Adam Gussow. Jason moved from Memphis for stints in various places, including Florida and jail, before settling in Nashville where he really made his presence known with his band Jason Ricci and New Blood. To be continued...Links:Jason's social media links::https://mooncat.org/https://www.instagram.com/jasonricci93/https://twitter.com/jasonricci93Patreon page:https://www.patreon.com/jasonricciTip Jason:PayPal.me/jasonricciBandcamp:https://jasonricci.bandcamp.com/Videos:Jason's YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/jasonricciBaby Scratch My Back with the Nick Moss band:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSGrzkcdiM0Podcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBor sign-up to a monthly subscription to the podcast:https://www.buzzsprout.com/995536/supportSpotify Playlist:Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICASSupport the show

This week on Dopey! We are joined by legendary bluesman and harmonica virtuoso and addict in recovery -  Jason Ricci. Jason delivers the super hardcore Dopey on every front. Possible top 5 of all time! Starting with his childhood - raised in a recovery cult, becoming a punk rock skater that turned to the Blues for salvation. And that's just the warm up! Hear Jason become completely enslaved by cocaine, crack and heroin until he miraculously crawled his way into recovery. PLUS a primer all about Alister Crowley! PLUS emails, voicemails and more on this brand new crazy episode of the good old Dopey Show. More about Dopey -  Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

Tom Ellis joins me on episode 62 for something a little bit different as we do a retrospective of the legendary Paul Butterfield, with Tom our resident expert. Born in 1942 in Chicago, Butterfield frequented many of the South Side blues clubs located there and even had the audacity to hire Howling Wolf's rhythm section before going on to record his seminal album ‘The Paul Butterfield Blues Band'. His high energy form of blues launched him on the scene and he quickly followed this with the genre busting East West album, with the band evolving further in the following albums by incorporating horns. Butter moved to Woodstock and formed Better Days. He also appeared in some notable sideman roles, including The Last Waltz concert with The Band.Butterfield has left us a tremendous body of work. He helped bring blues to the mainstream and created his own sound on harmonica that is as influential as any of the classic harmonica players.Links:Tom's Blues Access magazine articles on Butterfield:http://www.bluesaccess.com/No_25/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_27/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_29/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_31/butter.htmlEast West Live album review:https://www.bluespower.com/447rev.htmHorn From The Heart documentary:https://www.hornfromtheheart.com/Homespun instructional material:https://www.homespun.com/instructors/paul-butterfield/Videos:Album with John Mayall:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR040iW52_cPerforming at Woodstock in 1969:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h62W2ARtwU8Mystery Train with The Band:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-fmqOU8_UoPlaying with Muddy Waters:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Sj5tpn-noPerforming with BB King, Eric Clapton, Steve Ray Vaughan:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-i-tIXxtlY2015 Hall of Fame Induction, with Jason Ricci:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMxFvBVTWmMPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsor:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS

Widely considered one of the top harmonica players in the world, the singer and songwriter has been making records, winning awards, and thrilling audiences since he was a teenager. Ricci spent time studying and playing with blues legends like James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Johnny Winter, R.L. Burnside, and Howard Levy, and would come to be accepted by them as a peer. When it comes to hard living, Jason checks a lot of boxes: drugs, prison, and sexual confusion, to name a few. Now he can add the Troubled Men Podcast to the list. Topics include a deep freeze, Mardi Gras, rolling blackouts, Lent, Larry Flynt RIP, a guest recording, a new number, skate punk roots, flaka, a first teacher, teen trouble, “The Last Stop,” Idaho, Pat Ramsey in Memphis, living with the Kimbrough family, the N. Nic has been one of my best friends since I met him six years ago. He is an acclaimed harmonica player who has sat in with the likes of Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Jason Ricci, John Nemeth and Ronnie Baker Brooks. He also is a brilliant songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist who is influenced by artists like Daniel Johnston, David Dondero and Ray Bonneville. We had a fun conversation that hit on all sorts of random musical topics, one of them being what to do when you feel stagnation. Talking with Jason Ricci is one of the most popular harmonica players on the planet today. Listed in almost every top ten list of players on the internet today Jason Ricci is a polarizing force always in the spotlight and on the tips of critics, artists and fans tongue's everywhere. Through two-plus decades of endless touring, TV appearances, recordings, and the internet Jason Ricci's style of playing is so revolutionary and influential that there exists an entire younger generation of players imitating his music, clothes, gear, and even stage presence. Nicknamed “Moon Cat” (a street name he once used in Nashville and New Orleans to avoid police detection) Jason has been an almost constant force for decades in the studio, festivals, club dates, and press. Love him or hate him, through performing, singing, songwriting, teaching, harmonica playing and activism in the fields of L.G.B.T., mental health and addiction, it is not an overstatement that this young, white, queer, skateboarding, punk rock-loving, multiple convicted felony having Moon Cat from Maine is currently changing the world through music and education. Jason was a featured performer on Johnny Winter's Grammy award-winning CD ‘Step Back' (2014) Has received multiple Blues Music Award Nominations 2009 – 2016, and won a Blues Music Award in 2010. Featured performer at the Rock & Roll hall of fame with Zac Brown & Tom Morello for the Paul Butterfield Blues Band induction in 2015 Jason has worked and/or recorded with Junior Kimbrough, RL Burnside, Nick Curran, Walter Trout, Ana Popovic, Cedric Burnside, Joe Louis Walker, Peter Karp, Sue Foley, and many others. from his website www.mooncat.org
