Matt Anderson is one of CKUA's favourite artists. On the air and certainly with the audience. Matt is releasing his 11th solo studio album The Hammer and The Rose April 25th. I was delighted with all of that information until I got to"the date" April 25. As you may know, that's the first Friday for the CKUA Spring fundraiser. I asked Matt's team if I could move the Stew interview to this Saturday - and they approved!! So, we get the story of the album and we are the first play of several tracks, anywhere. This album, about the relationship between the head and the heart, presents a different Matt. A slightly quieter Matt, so you can hear the texture and grain of his voice. Great songs too. Co-writing the title track with Steve Dawson Co-writing with Tom and Thompson Wilson, Terra Lightfoot and Jesse O'Brien. Co-writing The Cobbler with producer/drummer Jason Van Tassel - as a tribute to, and in memory of, their Fathers. Includes a fine cover of JJ Cale's Magnolia. With Afie Jurvanen on guitar and vocals.
One of the true pleasures of a lifetime in music and broadcasting is connecting with artists at the very beginning of their careers. If the connection is a strong friendship, emotionally you get to go along for the ride. On the downside, you must be prepared to lose those friends along the way through attrition, lifestyle and medical issues. I'm pleased to say Colin James has given all of us a great ride. 8 Junos, 31 Maple Blues Awards, Induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame, Order of BC and turning 60 years old with 21 studio albums under his belt. Colin has played his way through an amazing collection of audiences. Starting with Stevie Ray style Texas blues, then blues rock, big band swing, roots, Americana and all the way back to blues. What a Ride!! Following a stellar concert at Massey Hall, Colin is on a Canadian tour now and he's heading our way. With the wonderful Terra Lightfoot! Feb 26 -Grey Eagle Calgary Feb 27 – N Jubilee Edmonton March 1 – Orpheum Vancouver March 3 – Royal Theatre Victoria March 4 & 5 – Port Theatre Nanaimo Colin is a master storyteller. This time he has tales of recovering from a road accident on his scooter in the USA. Damage to his foot and fret hand slowed him down considerably. He has stories of becoming what he dreamed of as an 8-year-old and the biography he's almost finished writing. The complete interview can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel.
This is Episode 424 of Georgian Bay Roots Radio, hosted by Lloyd Lemon that was released on December 1, 2024. Episode 424 is sponsored by The Georgian Bay Folk Society. In this episode Lloyd presents his interview with Terra Lightfoot as recorded at the Sharing Circle on Saturday morning, August 17, 2024. The interview is accompanied by music discussed by Terra (I finally get a chance to play some David Wilcox (one of Terra's early influences). Terra talks about some of her musical roots, her relationships with mentors like Colin Linden and Daniel Lanois, playing on tour with Blue Rodeo, Bruce Cockburn, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and some of the artists she has co-written with -including Matt Anderson, Colin Linden, Colin James, and Tyler Chester. Terra also graced us with two acoustic performances of new songs: L A Good Sign and and Could've Stayed Lost that she has already recorded and are planned to be released in February. We had some technical challenges with the field recording, but you can hear Terra's talent, passion and spirit shine through (even if it does not duplicate the amazing experience of sitting beside her while she sang and played). #summerfolk #podcast #georgianbayroots #georgianbayrootsradio #Summerfolk49 #terralightfoot #interview #davidwilcox #samweber

Colin's 21st album is called Chasing the Sun. Today, Aug 17 is his Birthday. Happy Day Colin Co-produced by Colin Linden in his Pinhead Studios in Nashville. Colin's coming to the Mulligan Stew Podcast with the complete story of how he and his friends wrote and created these outstanding songs. Colin singing a Lucinda Williams song, Protection, with Lucinda in the studio doing harmony. Two tracks with blues harp legend Charlie Musselwhite, co-writing memorable songs with Tom Wilson, Terra Lightfoot, Thompson Wilson, Jesse Obrien and others. A great rhythm section of Darryl Jones (Stones) Charley Drayton (Keith Richards). A splendid cover of Paul Butterfield's classic In My Own Dream. Also vocals by The McCrary Sisters and Ruby Amanfu Colin Linden leading the all-star band and co-writing with Colin James. It's their 6th album together. Colin and I have been doing interviews for a long time but there are still events and moments in his life that need retelling. For example, when the two Colins' met on the Canadian Prairies Colin James was 13 and Colin Linden was 17. Both were into playing the blues. A short time later Colin, still a teenager, got to play for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Stevie helped him take the next steps in his career. This is the complete Interview. His 2021 album Open Road won the JUNO Award for Best Blues Album and was nominated for Blues Foundation Best Blues Rock Album in 2023. Catching the Sun may very well get the best reception yet.

This weeks terrydavidmulligan YouTube is a tour with music from the heart. Every year, just about this time, Barney Bentall gathers up friends and hits the road with a travelling barn burner. Everyone on stage is the leader of their career or a band. There are at least 16 artists in this years Express. AND best of all, they're raising funds for the charities listed below. Barney Bentall writes his own introduction. This was his newsletter a week ago. Hi ya all. Gearing up for the Cariboo Express shows. Depending on how we mark the birth of this whole thing, it's the 18th or 19th year! I think for all of us that play in this big ol' bad ass band, it is a musical highlight of our year. With the help and hard work of some worthy charities, we've managed to raise over 5 million dollars over the years. Here are the dates: Come on out! There are always great guests that show up along with all the regulars. For those of you in the Toronto area, spread the word. This will be our second year and we want to keep coming back and develop what we have going out west. We are supporting Classroom Champions at the Glenn Gould show. Cheers and see you soon! Barney
First Podcast guest is Buffy Sainte Marie. Buffy has announced after a glorious 60-year career, she's not touring anymore and her documentary Carry it on has been nominated for an International Emmy Award. They're announced Nov 20. The only Canadian entry. I've been honoured to know Buffy for much of my life. Buffy's first comment was “How long have we been doing this Terry?” We cover off the film, why touring can be a hard road. Early days in Greenwich Village NYC. Her role in the indigenous community. Reveals why she's been so committed to tribal education. Lots of other stories. Second Podcast Guest is Tom Wilson Tom brings his music to Calgary Festival Hall October 19 and Festival Place Sherwood Park Edmonton Friday Oct 20. He's been just a tad busy. A new documentary, two new albums. An Indigenous Scholarship program. Named to the 2024 Order of Canada list. Working on BARK music. Reuniting his 90's band Junkhouse and re-releasing their 30-year-old Strays album. And his art has exploded up and out. Writing lately with Daniel Lanois, Terra Lightfoot and Colin James. There's another book coming and Lee Harvey Osmond things. And that's why we have him guesting. To support this up-and-coming new artist!!! Next week – Barney Bentall and Cariboo Express Two weeks – Susan Tedeschi – celebrating the 25th anniversary of Just Won't Burn. Her second album earned her a Grammy Nomination and started her career. More at www.mulliganstew.ca

From The Cat Came Back, Polly Wolly Doodle, We're Gonna Shine, to You Can Do It (If You Try), once you hear Fred's songs, you'll be singing along all day. Fred Penner has been the soundtrack to so many kids' lives and now those kids (myself included) are raising their kids on his music! His positivity and upbeat music is fun to listen to for those young and old. His songs are about encouragement, love, kindness, feelings and being positive. It was my sincere honour to interview Fred Penner for this episode. In this episode, we talk about his 13th album, Hear the Music, current tour, his views on the state of parenting and families today, raising his own kids, how he creates his music and the messages in his songs. It's the most wonderful conversation that I know you will enjoy as much as I did. It was the perfect way to celebrate my 150th episode of Parenting our Future! Fred's tour dates include May 28th and 29th at the Arts Theatre in Surrey with Charlotte Diamond and Rick Scott. May 30th to June 5th at the Vancouver Children's Festival on Granville Island, Vancouver. We talked about a previous episode of Parenting our Future, with Dr. Shimi Kang, “The Tech Solution” the link is below https://www.parentingforconnection.com/parentingourfuture/episode/cef039c6/the-tech-solution-with-dr-shimi-kang-or-pof62 For , you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Fred Penner Fred Penner could be forgiven for wanting to hang up his guitar and just relax. As Canada's foremost family entertainer, the genial singer/songwriter really has nothing left to prove. Witness his 12 previous albums with their 10 JUNO Award nominations and three wins. See also Fred's 12 seasons (and nearly 950 episodes!) hosting the hit CBC TV show, Fred Penner's Place. There are also his performances alongside luminaries including (but not limited to) Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Raffi, Sharon Lois & Bram and Buffy Sainte-Marie; his status as the first kid's performer to headline the Los Angeles Amphitheater; his honourary doctorates and his prestigious Member of the Order of Canada and Member of the Order of Manitoba. Oh, and let's not forget his winning turn as emcee of the cutting-edge 2015 Polaris Music Prize or his altruistic, globe-trotting work as an Ambassador for World Vision. All fabulous and notable. But at the end of the day, Fred loves making music and connecting with audiences of all ages. And so, despite a resume as long as it is glittery, Fred Penner is set to return with lucky album number 13, Hear The Music. Hear The Music features a roll call of marquee Canadian talent including (but not limited to) Ron Sexsmith, Alex Cuba, Basia Bulat, The Good Lovelies, Terra Lightfoot, Afie Jurvanen (a.k.a Bahamas) plus backup vocals from Fred's own family, all tethered to the sterling production of long-time collaborator Ken Whiteley. Says Fred: “Hear The Music brings me together again with my dear friend, producer Ken Whiteley, who so lovingly guided me through the process of making this album. I am honoured to have worked with him and the wealth of passionate, talented musicians who provided their creativity and support on this exciting project!” With 14 songs played by an acclaimed roster of musicians (jazz bassist George Koller, saxophonist Mike Murley) and with Fred himself on guitar, ukulele, harmonica, flute and jawharp, Hear The Music truly has something for everyone. PODCAST EXCLUSIVE - Terra Lightfoot - is a musician's musician; an awesome guitar player, singer and songwriter who has been making consistently great records (Juno nominated) for over a decade. This was the first time I've ever chatted with Terra and I loved it! I was really looking forward to it and it went in directions I didn't expect. We talked about her honky tonk piano playing grandmother, her guitar “Veronica” and meditation. It was a blast. For more on Terra, check out her website at www.terralightfoot.com.
Megan Nash is back with an all new season of Pep 'n Ched! In this episode Megan Nash and Terra Lightfoot plan a wedding, market a business, and talk a bit about songwriting too.
Folks, Summerfolk has come and gone for another year and it was ... well, it was different. But we all know why and there's no point belabouring that increasingly stale pandemic narrative. Host, Kelly Babcock takes you on one more tour of music by some of the performers of Summerfolk 46 with one additional song thrown in from our friend and performer from past Summerfolk seasons, Shawna Caspi whose album, Hurricane Coming, has just been released.. The SF46 performers we played tracks from this week included Julian Taylor, Madison Violet, Emm Gryner, Basset the Band, the Slocan Ramblers, Jaffa Road, Mimi O'Bansawin, Benjamin Dakota Rogers, Danny Michel, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar, and Terra Lightfoot. Enjoy.
In celebration of the little festival that could, and was: Summerfolk 46. Since it was impossible to catch all the acts, at all the venues, here's a handy sampler of a few of the great sounds the Georgian Bay Folk Society brought to Owen Sound this year. Travel by ear around the world with Jaffa Road, Moskitto Bar, Okan and Quique Escamilla. Revel in the shimmering guitars of Tony McManus & Julia Toaspern, the heavy riffs of Terra Lightfoot and the deep groove of Ray Bonneville. Rock out with The Skydiggers, get down with the bluegrass of the Slocan Ramblers, surround yourself in the voices of Crystal Shawanda and Evangeline Gentle. And from Kurt Swinghammer, a real special cut called 'Owen Sound'. These artists performed all over the scenic city for one weekend, and for one hour only they're all together on this episode of Georgian Bay Roots!
The fantastic guitarist and singer/songwriter Terra Lightfoot talks about Sides One and Two of the Beatles eponymous 1968 double album - what has become known the world over as The White Album. Terra goes through the album, with host Paul Romanuk, track by track. As usual, lots of talk about her career and music as well. If you're looking for more information on Terra, her homepage is a great place to start: http://terralightfoot.com/ (terralightfoot.com) A couple of her songs that we talk about during the podcast are Straight Line, from her 2011 self-titled debut album, as well as Drifter, from her 2017 New Mistakes album. I highly recommend exploring both records. You can find them wherever you stream your music. Other subjects covered during our conversation include: recording with top session players in Memphis, getting rid of writer's block, cover art inspiration and teaching her brother to play Blackbird around a campfire.
Canadian musicians Terra Lightfoot, Zaki Ibrahim and Tami Neilson honour Joni Mitchell's celebrated album Blue by covering their favourite songs; why there are more ticks in more places than there used to be; Drew Hayden Taylor says it's time for Canada to replace the beaver with the otter as our national symbol; why author and historian Mark Bourrie says he's done writing about Canadian history; and more.
"Christmas With Terra Lightfoot" The Ontario-born Terra Lightfoot was on our show back in 2018 and since then she’s been quite busy. We’ll catch you up on what she’s been up to, but a little background is in order first. Lightfoot played in The Dinner Belles before going solo back in 2011. Since then she’s put out four albums, including her latest, which is called Consider The Speed. Along the way, she’s been nominated for a Juno and the Polaris Prize, she’s toured with Bruce Cockburn, the Posies, Blue Rodeo and Toad the Wet Sprocket and she’s garnered rave reviews from everyone from No Depression to Pop Matters. Consider The Speed is a powerful entry in Lightfoot’s discography. Filled with rootsy ballads, raging guitars and big crunchy pop, it’s ruminative, emotionally direct and stirring at every turn. We love Terra Lightfoot and we’re so happy to have her back. In this conversation Terra talks to Alex about her love of Bonnie Raitt, lucid dreaming and how to stay creative during Covid. She also talks about a spooky (at first) island getaway and she gives an update on her attempt to learn the cello…..
Canadian Singer/Songwriter Terra Lightfoot joins the Podcast this week. Terra's flawless guitar licks bring a bright and compelling tone to a genre in need of a F#*king Rockstar!!!! Terra's new album CONSIDER THE SPEED is chilling, sorrowful and at the same time beautiful. Terra opens up about the hectic pace of touring and the roadblock she met when writing the new album. Terra plowed through that roadblock with the simmering, bluesy track "TWO WILD HORSES". Saddle up and enjoy the ride we took together!!!!!!!!!!!
What can we say about our friend Jeff Heisholt? He's a skilled and creative Canadian musician and keyboardist, who can definitely be considered a true ‘working’ player in the Toronto music scene. He’s spent the last 20 years on the road, throwing down mad ivory playing skills with bands and artists such as The Trews, Peter Elkas, Terra Lightfoot, Skydiggers, and Burt Neilson Band. We were really excited to sit down with Jeff and discuss his new synthesizer project ‘Current Fantasy’, a project he streams regularly to his Facebook channel, that while all 'Jeff', definitely channels many of his own musical heroes like 808 State, Aphex Twin, The Orb and Tangerine Dream. It's a phoner with former Winnipegger [Henry Beckwith](http://www.henrytours.ca/), currently based in Toronto and touring Canada and the world as a front-of-house audio guy and tour manager for an impressive list of nationally-known artists (his clients include Basia Bulat, Dan Mangan, Wintersleep, Terra Lightfoot, American Football, and more). Henry and I played in a short-lived reggae band together about 15 years ago, and it has been cool to watch his progress over the years (from afar) as he went from a touring musician to a sound guy at clubs to the guy who runs tings on the road for well-known acts. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba's newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). It's a Canadian double header! Terra Lightfoot's latest album, "New Mistakes' continues the Canadian singer-songwriter's journey from folk and alt-country into rockier territory. The album is a winner on all fronts - great songwriting, a band firing on all cylinders and Terra's earthy vocal and guitar front and center. Terra talks about songwriting, crafting lively tones with her SG/Bassman setup and more. Steve 'Lips' Kudrow is in Australia with his band mates celebrating 40 years of the band, Anvil. The Canadian metal band rose to prominence in the early '80s and haven't stopped - as well documented in the 2009 documentary, 'This is Anvil'. Steve talks about his unconventional path to creating metal tones and what it means to have endured in the music business on his own terms. First up this week, Mike catches up with Hamilton, ON singer, songwriter, and guitarist Terra Lightfoot about what’s been keeping her busy since her breakout second solo album, Every Time My Mind Runs Wild, was released last year and what she has planned for a follow-up. As well, Terra and Mike chat their experiences at South by Southwest 2016, playing showcase shows in the middle of the night, and more. Our feature interview is a lengthy conversation Mike had with Music Canada President Graham Henderson about the disappearing middle class of creators and how musicians and other copyright holders got squeezed out of the economic equation in the digital revolution. Why did tech companies get subsidized and become extremely rich on the backs of creators and what can now be done about it. The conversation is based on a speech Graham gave at the Economic Club of Canada last month entitled “The Broken Promise of a Golden Age,” and also follows the formation of the coalition Focus on Creators, which sees Canadian musicians, authors, songwriters, composers, music producers, poets, playwrights, film composers, actors, directors, and other members of the creative class have signed a joint letter addressed to the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, urging the government to put Canada’s creators at the heart of our cultural policy.

We've got plenty of Canadian Music Week content coming your way in the next few weeks, but this is where it all starts. Our two musical interviewees - Halifax rock outfit Gloryhound and Hamilton, ON songstress Terra Lightfoot - are performing at this year's edition of CMW. The former dropped their latest disc, Loaded Gun, produced by the one and only Garth Richardson (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine), last year, and since they've hit the road with the likes of Deep Purple, Theory of a Deadman, and many more top-tier touring acts. As for Lightfoot, in addition to her work with Dinner Belles, she's been amassing plenty of attention for her solo material and is directly supporting Daniel Lanois at his sure-to-sell-out CMW showcase at the iconic Horseshoe Tavern. Keep an eye for both. And finally, to prep us for the big closing weekend of CMW, we speak with festival director Justin Kwan about the new and special initiatives planned for this year's edition. Enjoy!
