Welcome to Episode 76 of Tablesetters! Devin and Steve are back at the mics to bring you everything happening across the baseball landscape — from monster contracts and rising stars to organizational missteps and real-life tragedy. We begin with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s jaw-dropping 14-year, $500 million extension — the third-largest contract in MLB history — and discuss what it means not just for the Blue Jays, but for a league that's fully leaning into early-career investments. With extensions this past week for Garrett Crochet, Ketel Marte, Jackson Merrill, Cal Raleigh, and Kristian Campbell, it's clear that locking in young stars is the model. Which leads us to a central question: Will the Orioles follow suit? With talent like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Jackson Holliday blossoming, it's time for Baltimore to decide whether it wants to ride the wave — or get caught chasing it later. Next up, we pivot to injuries shaping the early season. Key arms and contributors are already shelved, including Blake Snell, Spencer Arrighetti, Zach Eflin, Reynaldo López, and Victor Robles. We assess the impact of those absences and who might rise to fill the void. From there, we spotlight the scorching start of Sacramento's Tyler Soderstrom, who's tied with Aaron Judge atop the MLB home run leaderboard. His success is forcing a conversation about top prospect Nick Kurtz, who's dominating Triple-A. The Athletics may have a good problem on their hands — but one that demands a creative solution soon. We also cover two sobering off-the-field stories. First, the resignation of Tigers Assistant GM Sam Menzin following serious allegations of misconduct — a reminder of the cultural accountability still needed in front offices. And second, the devastating nightclub collapse in Santo Domingo, which claimed 66 lives, including beloved figures from both music and baseball: Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Rubby Pérez, and Nelsy Cruz. In one of the week's most powerful and human moments, Jarren Duran opened up about a suicide attempt he survived during a dark period in his career. His story, shared in a Netflix docuseries, is raw, courageous, and a vital reminder of the mental health challenges facing athletes today. And we close out with a look at Chase Dollander's MLB debut — 5 innings, 6 strikeouts, and his first career win — and Zac Veen's red-hot start in Triple-A. Colorado might not contend this year, but the future is taking shape. Plus, we take a few quick swings in Take a Pitch/Swing Away — including jersey etiquette at games, Kyle Tucker's potential contract value, and whether Mets players should be publicly name-dropping Sandy Alcantara. All that and more in this week's episode. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter @TablesettersPod, subscribe wherever you listen, and keep the conversation going — we're just getting warmed up.

Busy weekend for trades; Braves lose ERA leader

Tomorrow's 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline looms large, and this past weekend was dominated by deals as the Rays emerged as big sellers and the Yankees, Phillies, Mets and others did their best to bolster rosters for the stretch drive. On today's episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:38-4:40) To say that the Rays have been active is a massive understatement as they dealt third baseman Isaac Paredes to the Cubs, reliever Jason Adam to the Padres and starter Zach Eflin to the Orioles. They also shipped Randy Arozarena to the Mariners early Friday morning. As far as buyers go, the Yankees landed Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins and the Phillies acquired reliever Carlos Estéves from the Angels. Got all that? On the injury front, the Braves were dealt another blow as MLB ERA leader Reynaldo López exited his start Sunday with right forearm tightness. Not great and it might force Atlanta into acquiring rotation help in a hurry. ACT 2: AROUND THE LEAGUE (4:41-7:24) Elsewhere in the Majors, rookie shortstop Xavier Edwards hit the first pitch of the game for career homer No. 1, then proceeded to cap off his afternoon with an infield single to complete the second cycle in Marlins history. In Baltimore, Cedric Mullins made a sick over-the-shoulder grab in center to help secure a win over the Padres, Steven Kwan knocked a go-ahead homer to carry the Guardians past the Phillies, and the Dodgers got a big boost from No. 4 prospect River Ryan, who allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings to help beat the Astros. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (7:25-8:17) The Yankees head to Philly tonight to clash with Bryce Harper and Co. in the opener of a three-game series, and in Houston, Paul Skenes – who was tagged for his first career loss in his last outing – makes another do-not-miss start as the Pirates do battle with the Astros. The Braves were dealt a big blow Sunday as Ozzie Albies suffered a fractured wrist and will miss eight weeks. Also, the Hall of Fame welcomed the Class of ‘24 and Jorge Soler and Shohei Ohtani needed just two swings to smash 951 feet worth of homers.  On today's episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:41-6:22) In the ninth inning of the Braves' loss to the Cardinals Ozzie Albies awkwardly snagged his glove on a baserunner's shoulder. It immediately didn't look good and the news wasn't good as X-rays revealed a broken left wrist. In Cooperstown, Todd Helton, Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer and Jim Leyland were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and not to be outdone, Jorge Soler crushed a 478-foot homer for the Giants at Coors – MLB's longest of the season – and Shohei Ohtani followed suit with a 473-footer of his own on Sunday Night Baseball. ACT 2: WHIPAROUND (6:22-8:30) Elsewhere around the Majors, the Yankees and Rays traded home runs – and slow home run trots – in a Tampa Bay win, Royals righty Seth Lugo strengthened his AL Cy case with a three-hitter against the White Sox, the Mariners overcame a Yordan Alvarez cycle to salvage the series finale against the Astros, and the Phillies put an end to the Pirates' six-game win streak. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (8:30-9:17) No fewer than four Cy Young candidates take the mound tonight as Tarik Skubal and the Tigers hit the road to battle the Guardians, the Braves and Reynaldo López host the Reds, Ranger Suárez toes the rubber for the Phillies in Minnesota, and the visiting Red Sox and Tanner Houck match up against the Rockies.   To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Plus the latest update from final fan voting for the All-Star Game saw some big names in tight races. On today's episode: Act I: THE BIG STORIES (0:52-3:17) James Wood is a name you will be hearing about often. With his elite speed, the 21-year-old Nationals outfielder was off and running in his Major League debut. He singled in his first at-bat, walked and also reached on an error in a wild 9-7 loss to the Mets. J.D. Martinez crushed a three-run homer in a six-run top of the 10th for the Mets, who then hung on for dear life. The resurgent Astros put a damper on Canada Day ceremonies in Toronto with a matinee win over the Blue Jays. The Brewers and Rockies rounded out a quiet slate in baseball with an extra-inning slugfest at Coors Field. Act II: WHIPAROUND (3:17-5:05) All-Star Game voting ends at noon ET tomorrow and some races are going down to the wire. It's especially tight in the AL and NL outfields, where Juan Soto and Christian Yelich are leading by slim margins. Act III: LOOKING AHEAD (5:05-6:16) There's a pitcher going tonight who is bidding to be the NL starter in the All-Star Game. And that's after being a reliever the past two years with no certainty of even making the Opening Day roster a few months ago. Jackson Holliday is getting the call, David Bednar blew another save, and the Royals keep winning! Fred Zinkie and Jeff Erickson cover it all and more! --- 00:30 - Jackson Holliday promoted! Let's start a pod with some pod-sitivity!!! 12:30 - Here we go again: Framber Valdez to the IL. A few thoughts on all these pitcher injuries….. 16:00 - Spencer Arrighetti to start for Astros. Is he ready to help fantasy teams?… 20:40 - Fred's free agent additions 23:30 - Apparently Elly De La Cruz is good after all…. 26:00 - In fantasy football, we see Zero RB. I know it's too early to say that definitively, but we have some mid/late-round starters such as Tanner Houck, Sean Manaea, Shoto Imanaga, Garrett Whitlock etc. who are off to excellent starts.  33:30 - Chris Bassitt threw 115 pitches on April 9, but he will be fine since he throw 80 mph…. 36:30 - Royals start 46:00 - Worried about David Bednar after he gave up 4 runs today? 48:30 - George Kirby with another poor start… 52:00 - Ronald Acuna stole three bases, so he's probably still good….. 54:00 - Reynaldo López 58:00 - Tyler O'Neill --- Vivid Seats Promotional Copy This MLB season, knock it out of the park with Vivid Seats and score great tickets to the biggest games of the year.
