Our guest today is Brian Moore, former England and British Lions rugby player, lawyer, newspaper columnist, television commentator and author. If it's informed and insightful opinions you've come for, you're in luck. In a world where the professional sphere of sports intertwines with broader societal issues, Brian Moore dives into themes of identity, retirement, and the business of sports, unraveling the complexities faced by athletes and their transitions post-career. He shares his personal journey through retirement, highlighting the often-overlooked challenges athletes face when leaving the sports arena. Despite a parallel career in law, Moore explains that rugby was more than just a pastime—it was a core part of his identity. The conversation delves into the psychological toll of losing a primary self-concept, underscoring the necessity for structured support and planning for athletes transitioning to life beyond sports. The podcast also delves into the financial underpinnings of sports, particularly rugby's struggle to balance growing costs with limited income. Moore and host Richard Gillis discuss the unrealistic parallels drawn between football and other sports, emphasizing rugby's unique economic challenges. They explore potential solutions, from restructuring leagues to encouraging private investment, all while considering the implications for the international game. The podcast offers a comprehensive exploration into how sports intersect with identity, economics, and societal health, providing listeners with a nuanced understanding of the complexities faced by athletes and the broader implications for society. Through candid discussion, Brian Moore illuminates the paths for supporting athletes in their retirement, enhancing the financial viability of sports, and fostering a culture of physical literacy.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. In the latest edition of The Slam Podcast - in association with Callaway - Matt Coles and Matt Chivers are joined by award-winning journalist and author Richard Gillis. Richard wrote The Captain Myth: The Ryder Cup and Sport's Great Leadership Delusion, published in 2016, which re-thinks the role of the Ryder Cup captain and how important they actually are. With an array of interviews with an abundance of golfing figures, Richard considers the idea of the good and bad captain - the inevitable labels given to the winning and losing leaders at the Ryder Cup. Richard joins the team to discuss how captains have been perceived in previous iterations of the event, when often their fate has been determined by flip-of-a-coin moments, such as Justin Rose's memorable putt when facing Phil Mickelson at the 2012 matches at Medinah. Do we just seek a story of romance surrounding who wins? Or does the best team simply win most of the time? He also delves into the business side of the Ryder Cup and ponders its future if money becomes the primary object of the event. One day, could it be held every year? Or, could it become a four-day tournament? You won't want to miss this special Ryder Cup preview! The Matts also previewed the huge week in Rome and revealed the European pairings they would go with for the first foursomes session on Friday morning. Will Luke Donald opt for experience over rookies, or will the Englishman put trust in his most fresh-faced team members?

An event that sticks in both our minds and you’ll hear why later on. We covered many points in his career, the highs and lows. Times that have included writing fake viewers questions for the lunch break during Channel 4’s coverage of the cricket; riding the internet wave in the early 2000’s with Sport Business; And his time in the West Indies for the 2007 Cricket World Cup covering the Irish team's involvement. A tournament that included their defeat of the mighty Pakistan team, led by Bob Woolmer. Shortly after Bob was found dead in his room and Rich found himself close to the centre of it all after spending what turned out to be his last day with him, and was staying just 3 doors down from where it happened. The media circus that ensued sounds bonkers. Please do give us a rating or review on Apple as it really helps people find the podcast and give us a follow on any other platform you may be using. In the new episode of The Line, Richard Gillis & Danny Rogers talk to Jermaine Jenas, the former England & Premier League star who is one of the rising stars of sports broadcasting. The conversation starts in 2006 in Baden Baden, at the England team's during the ill-fated Fifa World Cup campaign, which won more headlines for WAGs, Beckham-mania and tabloid stings than football matches. This summer, Jenas is part of the BBC's team in Russia for the 2018 version. We discuss whether journalists should be patriotic when it comes to covering England matches, whether football is ready for its first gay superstar and what really happens behind the scenes at Match of the Day.

The former England rugby star is today one of the most distinctive & authoritative voices in sports broadcasting & news media, working for the BBC & Daily Telegraph & establishing his own rugby podcast Full Contact, which is a cult hit among sports fans of all ages. In the latest episode of The Line, Moore talks to The Line’s regular host Richard Gillis about the sport’s relationship with the media, the rise of the pundit class and the cult of the super coach. Featuring one tale of sponsorship in rugby's amateur era involving ill-fitting shorts and a last gasp run to a Richmond sports store on the morning of the 1991 World Cup final. Moore also discusses the marketing challenges facing today’s generation of rugby stars and the role PR management played in the career of Danny Cipriani, the great lost talent of English rugby. Throughout this exclusive one-to-one encounter, Moore’s trademark bite & wit are never far below the surface. The only time he sounds uncomfortable is when asked whether he considers himself a brand (spoiler: he doesn’t, but he is).

Sex, violence, booze and drugs. And that's just before we talk about brown envelopes full of cash and dawn raids in Swiss hotels. Sometimes it feels like sport lunges from one big PR crisis to the next, keeping a whole specialist comms industry busy. Ben Stokes' infamous right hook, Wayne Rooney's drink-and-drive escapades, Joey Barton's betting habit and the end of the Tiger Woods brand via a car crash with a fire hydrant: the list of sports crises is a long one, moving from personal disasters through to the big corporate scandals of recent years, involving Fifa's financial shenanigans, and the money and doping problems that have dogged sports such as cycling and athletics. Communications expert and former News of the World editor Phil Hall has witnessed, exposed and advised on many comms crises first hand. In this episode of The Line, we talk about what it's like when a client is in the eye of the storm. We look at the nature of a scandal, the little moments that define a story and celebrity news management in the age of Twitter. "I used to have a checklist of the dos and don'ts of crisis management", says Hall. "But I chucked it in the bin. Every case is different." He found that being an underdog is important, momentum isn't and it's possibly that luck matters more than anything else. Also: Paul Azinger should not captain another U.S. team.
