Just before Iron Maiden played their final concert of The Days of Future Past Tour in Sao Paolo, Brazil on December 7, 2024. it was announced that longtime drummer Nicko McBrain would be retiring from the road after 42 years with the band. Soon after the conclusion of the tour, it was announced that Simon Dawson, who has working with Steve Harris in British Lion for the last decade, would be taking his place on the road. However, manager Rod Smallwood has said that Nicko would still be around and would be available to play on any future recording Maiden may endeavor to record. We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to reflect on the career Nicko has forged before and during his stint with Iron Maiden and reflect on what a character he truly is. When we learned that Nicko had suffered a stroke several months before rehearsals began for the Days of Future Past Tour, we speculated that his time in the band would be short. We want to celebrate all the amazing work over the decades and his contributions to Maiden but we'll also contemplate what the band will sound like without their long-time drummer and how Simon Dawson will fit on the upcoming Run For Your Lives Tour in 2025 and beyond. Plus The Wolf shares his story of meeting Nicko at a golf tournament and relive some funny moments throughout his career. UP THE IRONS!!! La ContraHistoria
Las hambrunas de Bengala

La ContraHistoria

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2024 74:05

40 Percent Melt-up Followed by an 80 Percent Freefalling Market Says David Hunter. Expect Freefalling Markets; COVID Crash "On Steroids" David Hunter David Hunter, a veteran contrarian macro strategist, is forecasting a major "melt-up" in financial markets followed by a dramatic collapse. He predicts that stock markets will continue to surge, with the S&P 500 possibly reaching 7,500 and the NASDAQ hitting 25,000 before this parabolic rally culminates. However, Hunter warns that this final stage will be followed by a global economic bust, driven by decades of overspending, overborrowing, and central bank policy errors. In terms of precious metals, he has a bullish pre-bust outlook, forecasting gold to rise to $3,400 and silver to reach $75 in the near term, boosted by a weakening dollar and falling interest rates. He then sees a crash in prices. After the bust, Hunter sees both metals continuing their upward trajectory, with gold potentially reaching $20,000 and silver soaring to $500 as part of a broader commodity-driven recovery. Interview by Simon Russell-WhiteIt's appropriate to skip the fluff on this one, for goodness' sake it's Steve Harris (Bass/ Keyboards) we're talking to here and the importance of his "other band" (insert laughter here) Iron Maiden needs no explanation and/or justification. The focus tonight? The band he helped put back together piece by piece... Yes, I'm talking about the one and only British Lion. After the band imploded in the 90s, the man himself couldn't bear the sight of knowing that British Lion would not be again, the reasoning he explained was simple. "The songs were just too good for it to stop". And the rest, as they say, is history. For his bandmates - Richard Taylor (vocals), David Hawkins (guitar), Grahame Leslie (guitar), and Simon Dawson (drums) - this Australian tour is the first time the boys have ever even stood on Australian soil, let alone played here. Of course, Steve has been here a billion times, and assured me that he'd point the fellas in the right direction for any site seeing! Now, we all know what sized arenas/stadiums "Maiden" has played, but as our conversation leaned into discussing British Lion playing more intimate venues, a sense of stepping back in time took hold. But not in the usual way, as Maiden skipped playing a lot of smaller venues due to their sudden rise to fame so in many respects for Steve he is playing venues for the first time all over the world!!Now, if that doesn't grab you, then I don't know what will.Enjoy listening to one of the Godfathers of the heavy metal game, ohh and go check out the almighty British Lion this August/September supported by Tony Moore's Awake - a man that needs no introduction. A man that Steve has had a musical bond with since 1977.All Hail!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Gareth Rhys Owen introduces a celebration of the rugby life of JPR Williams, who has died aged 74. Recorded in 2019 to mark his 70th birthday, this programme hears from those who knew the Wales and Lions full-back best, including the late Phil Bennett, Steve Fenwick, Bob Hiller and Gareth Thomas. With his mutton chops, flowing locks and rolled-down socks he was instantly recognisable. An icon not just of Welsh rugby but of global sport. JPR is one of a select group of six Welshmen who won 3 Grand Slams in an international career that spanned three decades. He won 55 caps for Wales in an era when they reigned supreme – he took to the field 11 times against England and 11 times, he emerged victorious.JPR also toured twice with the British Lions – in 1971 in New Zealand with the series 2-1 in the Lions favour, he dropped a goal from 45 metres that led to a drawn game and meant they still remain the only Lions side to win a test series against the All Blacks. In 1974 he was a key member of the 'Invincibles' who won 21 of their 22 matches, drawing the final test with South Africa.Presenter Ross Harries celebrates John Peter Rhys Williams' life in rugby in the company of some of those who know him best: John Taylor, his teammate at London Welsh, Wales and the Lions and also best man at his wedding; Wales and Lions legends Phil Bennett and Steve Fenwick; former England captain and 71 Lions teammate Bob Hiller; and Wales centurion and Grand Slam-winning captain Gareth Thomas, himself another Bridgend old boy. It's widely accepted that he was one of a kind – unique and singular presence on the rugby field. JPR was fearless, he was peerless - but was he the greatest?

STATUS QUO: Boogie Rock Brilliance with Drummer JOHN COGHLAN

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2023 52:00

Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-running bands, staying together for over six decades. During much of that time, the group was only successful in the U.K., where they racked up a string of Top Ten singles over the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s. Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" Following that single, the group suffered a lean period for the next few years before the band members decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970. The Quo have basically recycled the same simple boogie on each successive album and single, yet their popularity has never waned. If anything, their very predictability ensured the group a large following. The guys started out as The Spectres with Francis Rossi (vocals, guitar) Alan Lancaster (bass) drummer John Coghlan and organist Roy Lynes. The group added Rick Parfitt (guitar, vocals) and changed its name to Status Quo. Throughout the '70s, each album Status Quo released went into the Top Five, while their singles -- including the number one "Down Down" (1974), "Roll Over Lay Down" (1975), "Rain" (1976), "Wild Side of Life" (1976), and a cover of John Fogerty's "Rockin' All Over the World" (1977) - consistently hit the Top Ten. Since they were experiencing a great deal of success, they didn't change their sound at all, they just kept churning out the same heavy boogie. John Coghlan left Status Quo in 1981 – during rehearsals for the band's 20th Anniversary album in Switzerland. Tensions had developed and John left to form his own band. By 1983 his own band featured a selection of respected musicians, comprising; guitarist Ray Majors (ex-Mott and British Lions), bass player Ian Ellis (ex-Savoy Brown and Steamhammer), and keyboard player Jeff Banister. That same year John Coghlan teamed up with a trio of other well-known musicians called the Rockers. The four man line up boasted John on drums, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy's frontman) on bass, guitar and vocals, Chas Hodges (from Chas ‘n' Dave) on keyboards and Roy Wood (ex Wizzard, ELO and The Move) on guitar and vocals. Coghlan continued to tour regularly playing with various musicians. He began working with Alan Lancaster in Australia who was putting together a band with Australian guitarist John Brewster, called the Bombers. John worked with The Bombers for a year but returned to the UK in 1990. John Coghlan started working with his own band, John Coghlan's Quo, during the late 1990s. By that time, Status Quo had scored 50 British hit singles, which was more than any other band in rock & roll history at the time. This week John Coghlan joins us to explain what those heady days were like, why he left the band in 1981and what life holds for him today. It's time again to get into the good stuff from the Iron Maiden camp. In 2012, Steve Harris finally made good on his promise with UK act, British Lion, to make their album. Unfortunately, by this time the band had broken up and he had to step into the bassist's shoes. This should be a problem for the beast of the bass right?

The Wicker Man is a 1973 British folk horror film directed by Robin Hardy and starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Big Chris Lee. In his 7th appearance on The General Witchfinders. The screenplay by Anthony (frenzy) Shaffer, inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual, centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practice a form of Celtic paganism. The movie is well-regarded by critics. Film magazine Cinefantastique described it as "The Citizen Kane of horror movies", and in 2004, Total Film magazine named The Wicker Man the sixth greatest British film of all time, and during the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony the film was included as part of a sequence that celebrated British cinema. In 1989, Shaffer wrote a script treatment for The Loathsome Lambton Worm, a direct sequel with fantasy elements. Hardy had no interest in the project, and it was never produced. In 2006, an ill-received American remake was released, from which Hardy and others involved with the original have dissociated themselves. In 2011, a spiritual sequel directed by Hardy entitled The Wicker Tree, was released and featured Lee in a cameo appearance.Television actor Edward Woodward was cast in the role of Sergeant Neil Howie after the part was declined by both Michael York and David Hemmings. In Britain, Woodward was best known for the role of Callan, which he played from 1967 to 1972. After The Wicker Man, Woodward went on to receive international attention for his roles in the 1980 film Breaker Morant and the 1980s TV series The Equalizer. The film was produced at a time of crisis for the British film industry. The studio in charge of production, British Lion Films, was in financial trouble and was bought by wealthy businessman John Bentley. To convince the unions that he was not about to asset-strip the company, Bentley needed to get a film into production quickly. This meant that The Wicker Man, a film set during spring, actually began filming in October 1972: artificial leaves and blossoms had to be glued to trees in many scenes. The production was kept on a small budget. Christopher Lee was extremely keen to get the film made; he and others worked on the production without pay,(Something he seems very keen to mention at every opportunity). While filming took place, British Lion was bought by EMI Films.Iron Maiden released a single called The Wicker Man from their Brave New World album in tribute to the classic film.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$ Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff.
