I hope you're having a great week so far. We're currently on a little podcast break at Working Hard, Hardly Working whilst we work on something hugely exciting which is coming very soon and I focus on opening the first ever TALA store which I still cannot believe is happening! But you know I would never leave you without inspiring content on a monday morning! So I've picked my absolute favourite episodes from the nearly 130 we've released. Today's is with the man with the most soothing voice in the world (who also happens to be a world renowned psychologist) Professor John Amaechi. Not only is he an Organisational Psychologist, an OBE, a New York Times Bestselling Author, a Fellow of the Institute of Science and Technology, a Professor of Leadership, a non-executive director of an FTSE 250 company and the founder of organisational psychology consultancy APS. He was also, more surprisingly, the first Briton to play professional basketball in the NBA league, a move which saw him leave his hometown of Stockport for the world of professional basketball aged just 18. And whilst playing, he was the first NBA player to come out as gay. Never afraid to stand up and speak out, his book made me question a lot of things I thought I knew about myself and the way I live and work. +JOHN'S LINKS: LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/amaechiInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/johnamaechiobe/?hl=enAPS: https://www.apsintel.com/ +MY LINKS: https://gracebeverley.komi.io/+SHREDDY, TALA and THE PRODUCTIVITY METHOD are my own brands, therefore any mention of them - whilst not being a sponsorship - is monetarily endorsed. Today I'm joined by Monique Carayol, a leadership coach and consultant, who will be discussing the concept of being a brave leader. Monique starts off by explaining that being a brave leader goes beyond just being fearless. It means practicing authentic, compassionate, and inclusive leadership. Her vision is to create a global movement of brave leaders who empower others to reach their full potential. One of the key points Monique highlights is the importance of teaching and supporting leaders on their journey. She believes that by challenging negative thoughts and intentionally catastrophising, leaders can overcome their fears and become more courageous in their decision-making. Monique shares a powerful tool that she uses with her clients - asking the question, "Is it true?" This simple question helps challenge false beliefs and allows leaders to see situations from a different perspective. By questioning the validity of their thoughts, leaders can make more informed and rational decisions. Understanding the emotions and thoughts of team members is another crucial aspect of being a brave leader. Monique emphasises the value of active listening and creating a safe space for open communication. By truly understanding their team members, leaders can build trust and foster a positive work environment. Seeking advice from senior leaders is another valuable tip she shares. Monique believes that learning from those who have already walked the path of leadership can provide valuable insights and guidance. By seeking advice and mentorship, leaders can continue to grow and develop their own leadership skills. If you want to connect with Monique and learn more about her work, you can find her on LinkedIn. She is also a co-founder of the Bravery in the Boardroom movement, which aims to inspire and empower leaders to be brave in their decision-making. The power of catastrophizing [00:10:35] Discusses how humans tend to catastrophize situations and make irrational decisions based on false assumptions. Last week, Andrew attended the #Solacesummit2023 in Birmingham. In collaboration with the Solace team, he recorded a podcast episode to try and capture some of the key themes and takeaways from the day. Regular listeners will know we did something similar at the New Local #Strongerthings conference earlier in the year (you can find that episode on the podcast site). As then, the result is a series of mini-interviews with some of the stars of the day and provides a great summary of the main discussion points. Solace Summits are focused on personal development so there is a lot on how leaders make time for reflection and development. But we also get into some of the challenging issues of the day including playing a leadership role in a council which is under intervention and supporting local residents with the cost-of-living crisis. Interviewees include: - Adele Taylor, Executive Director of Finance and Commercial, Slough Borough Council - Sophie Hosking, Strategic Director – Neighbourhoods, Cornwall Council - Hal Khanom, Head of Strategy and Community Participation, London Borough of Barnet - Ruth Du Plessis, Director of Public Health, St Helen's Council - Rob Powell, Executive Director for Resources, Warwickshire County Council - Allison Thomas, Chief Executive, North West Leicestershire District Council Finally, Andrew spent some time with Solace Managing Director, Graeme McDonald reflecting on the conference and what he hopes people took away from it. One immediate reflection was that despite all the pressure the local government sector is under, the leaders and future leaders at the summit were resilient and determined to do the best they can for the communities they serve. We owe them all a debt of gratitude. It's all very inspiring stuff. Speaking of inspiring, one of the keynote speakers on the day was the inspiring John Amaechi. So as well as reflecting on the discussions with the interviewees, Andrew also talks about on the important messages from John on equality and diversity. I hope you enjoy it!

This guy. John Amaechi is fantastic. The psychologist and former NBA star sits down with Danny & Phil to discuss what it is to be a broad, powerful, 6’9” Black man in a world of tiny people. He talks with great care about the responsibilities his body brings with it, standing out, and having incredible physical power but being careful never to use it. As the first openly gay player in the NBA, he’s a man who can talk openly and wisely about almost anything - and we certainly learned a lot. As ever, email us on hello@assemblehere.co.uk, find us on Twitter @assemblehere or Insta on @manatomypod and please consider leaving a review (sadly we can only accept glowing ones at this point). Don’t forget you can subscribe to our twice-weekly newsletter, packed with stories and useful stuff, at assemblehere.co.uk. Photo courtesy of APS.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
'The most unlikely of people, in the most improbable of circumstances, can become extraordinary.' The Promises of Giants is an exploration of the practices and behaviours that define transformational leadership. It is a challenge, not only to those in named positions of power but to anyone who aspires to make a difference in their environment. A challenge to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way. From socio-political chaos and workplace disruption to the climate change crisis, we have never needed people with the skill and will to collaborate to create a better world more than now. We need people who are willing to fill the leadership void. People who will embrace the influence they have. People who believe in improving society and workplace culture - not only because it makes life better, but because it is proven to yield positive results. We need more leaders. The Promises of Giants is a challenge to anyone who aspires to make a difference in their environment. Over 14 promises, it seamlessly intertwines personal anecdotes and workplace and social observation with the latest research, to provide practical, proven tips and strategies to empower you to maximize your own potential and inspire others. It is not a self-help book. It is a how-to guide for winning, rooted in the belief that the most unlikely of people, in the most improbable of circumstances, can become extraordinary. John Amaechi well understands the responsibilities and potential that come with being a giant. The Promises of Giants is the product of a lifetime spent observing and studying effective leadership - from accompanying his mother's visits to her dying patients to competing at the highest levels of professional sport, through two decades of management consulting with multinational corporations. These experiences have shown that everyone has the ability to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way. Everyone is a giant to someone.
