"Croatan" is a short story by Malcolm Ferguson. First published in Weird Tales in July 1948, Croatan concerns the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony. "Creatures summoned from outer eons, our masters by an eternity of time and progress."
Have I got a treat for you guys!Have you heard of this? I hadn't, but I thought I'd use my powers of logic to try to solve mysteries with Julie, she suggested this.Would love to know your thoughts on it, I think in the end only one solution was left after I went through the story.
This week, we head back to the fabled Age of Exploration, when European monarchs were just catching on to the notion that it might be nice to try and exploit the entire world for financial gain. Using the famed disappearance of the Roanoke Colony as our centerpiece, we will explore the social, religious, and economic circumstances surrounding this time period, before digging in to the actual mystery in Part II next week. WikipediaThe origins of one of the America's oldest unsolved mysteries can be traced to August 1587, when a group of about 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. Later that year, it was decided that John White, governor of the new colony, would sail back to England in order to gather a fresh load of supplies. But just as he arrived, a major naval war broke out between England and Spain, and Queen Elizabeth I called on every available ship to confront the mighty Spanish Armada. It was the second attempt by settlers to create an outpost there, and they were once again met with difficulties. In 1584, Spain dominated the coasts of Central and South America, the Carribean, and modern day Florida. England, under the rule of Elizabeth I, sought to disrupt and overthrow this control by establishing colonies in the New World. Not only would these colonies help provide a buffer against Spain's control, but it also helped set up a home base for England's privateering, which allowed English ships to attack Spanish ships, stealing treasure and gaining control of Spanish trade routes in the region. One of England's most famous privateers, Sir Walter Raleigh, with the blessing of Queen Elizabeth, sent a reconnaissance expedition to the New World in April, 1584, they arrived in present day North Carolina in July of 1584, and would go on to establish the first English colony in the united States, Roanoke Colony, in 1587. At this site today, Fort Raleigh, named after Sir Walter Raleigh, preserved the history of Roanoke Colony and National Park Guide Josh Nelson joins us to today to tell us about the Elizabethan history of Raleigh, North Carolina, and to share some of the archaeological finds still there today that you can see from Shakespeare's lifetime. Cheryl Hole and Nikki Druce are turning back the clock to the 1500s, to travel to the “new world” (see: America). After a previous failed attempt, Queen Elizabeth the 1st was hell bent on colonising as much of the world as possible, and so, under the guidance of John White, 120 volunteers travelled 3,795 miles across the choppy Atlantic to create their new home… it was the last journey they would ever take, as just a few years later they would mysteriously vanish off the face of the Earth. Who were the lost colony of Roanoke, and what actually happened? Cheryl and Nikki are about to find out. Historian and author Scott Dawson joins Tim to talk about his team's discovery of what actually happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks. He has spent the past 11 years working with a team of archaeologists, historians, botanists and geologists to try to uncover the truth behind the story of the Lost Colony. This episode was first released on September 20, 2020. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Lost_Colony.mp3 It was August of 1590, and Englishman John White was about to return to the Roanoke Colony in the Americas, where he had been named governor three years earlier. John was among 115 English settlers who landed at Roanoke Island off the coast of what we now know as North Carolina in the Outer Banks region. After the group settled in Roanoke, John had sailed back to England to collect a load of supplies the settlers would need. He would have returned to Roanoke Island sooner, but England's war with Spain complicated things. So, now, three years later, John is about to return to Roanoke, where he last saw his wife and daughter, along with his granddaughter, and the other settlers. Then something unexpected happens. When John White arrives at the colony, he finds no one. Not a single person is there to greet him. Not a trace. One clue, however, would prove to be the key to unlocking this mystery over 400 years later. On a wooden post, one word was carved. It said “Croatoan,” which is the name of a local native American tribe, and the name of an island south of Roanoke where the Croatoans lived. Those are the facts we've known until now. Scott Dawson has studied this mystery more than most and decided to get some answers for himself. Dana talks about the difference between bees, and wasps, while Ashley dives into the mystery of the lost Roanoke colony.
Aah, Croatoan. The midseason finale of s2. There's just... too much in this episode to sum it up tidily in a little synopsis like this. I really tried to keep the podcast under an hour and a half and came SO CLOSE but still failed (don't worry, it was over two hours before I edited it >.>). So instead, I'm just gonna cackle about the fact John had a crackpot theory about the Roanoke Colony disappearance that Azazel probably laughed his ass off over as he planned out this whole test for the Winchesters. Is Sam immune to the weirdo demon virus? (yes) Do people who have the demon virus behave as expected? (yes) Can the demons control the situation once everyone is infected, manipulating them not just to become ravening monsters who kill everything but who are still capable of manipulation to follow a specific agenda and accomplish complex tasks? (yes) (i mean the croatoan infected were methodical and not mindless, yet still followed multi-step orders like “guard the bridge” and “do not let the Winchesters leave town” and specifically isolating Sam so that he a) understood that he had been specifically and directly infected with the virus and b) could be proven to have been immune to the virus all along. MULTIPLE infected people had an opportunity to infect him and chose not to. He could've been infected without even knowing it, surreptitiously, and yet no, they specifically wanted him to KNOW he was being deliberately targeted and infected. SINISTER! and PURPOSEFUL!) This is s2′s “it's all about the blood” that functions like s6′s “it's all about the souls.” Because yeah, it's all about the blood-- from Sam's demon blood infection to the blood bowl phone demons use. Because that's exactly what Azazel did to Sam by feeding him his blood. He turned him into a phone receiver for manipulative visions. OKAY. On a misty August day in 1590, John White disembarked from a perilous voyage across the Atlantic ocean. White and his crew had come to America to check on a settlement, but as they approached the Roanoke colony, they realized that something was very wrong: the people of Roanoke had disappeared without a trace. On this episode of "Yesterday's News," Dancy and Veronica explore one of America's most famous vanishing acts: the mystery of "The Lost Colony." This podcast is brought to you by Factinate.com. It's an episode of disappearances here. First Jen takes us into South America with Percy Fawcett... never to return. Then Fraser returns to colonial America to wrap up the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. For this week's Creepy Cocktail, we present another favorite of the American colonial days - the Stone Fence. Or more specifically, Martha Stewart's Apple Brandy and Cider, which is a sort of riff on the Stone Fence. Drink up! In 1590, an English colony on Roanoke Island disappeared without a trace. The only clue was a message carved on a fence post. While some think the settlers integrated with a local tribe, multiple leads suggest otherwise. To view this episode's full list of sources, please visit parcast.com/supernatural Learn more about your ad choices.
