Ian welcomes back one of his very first podcast guests, filmmaker Sean Fahey, for a look at the life-changing new documentary, For Kicks--which will have its world premiere this weekend at the Chicago Underground Film Festival! The film centers on Chicago security specialist and musician Eugene Thomas who, back in the 1980s had a wild career in Taiwanese martial arts movies. After learning self-defense from watching Kung Fu movies, Thomas took formal Tae Kwon Do lessons, and traveled East to find his true calling. Through a series of chance encounters, he rose to prominence as one of the genre's few Black superstars--along with Ron Van Clief, who Fahey also profiles in the doc.In this interview, Sean talks about what he's been up to since making his first feature film, Bailout (For Kicks is his second); the unexpected circumstances under which he learned about his friend's secret life as a movie star; and how he found cosmic parallels between Thomas' life story and his own as a filmmaker. He also talks the possible future of For Kicks--i.e. where folks might see the movie outside of a handful of upcoming festivals. The film will screen as the Closing Night event at CUFF's 30th anniversary celebration this Sunday, with shows at 5pm and 8:30pm (with appearances by Sean and Eugene Thomas!).Show LinksGet your tickets for CUFF's September 17th Closing Night event, featuring For Kicks, with Sean Fahey and Eugene Thomas! For more information about the Chicago Underground Film Festival's 30th anniversary celebration, check out the fest's website and their full schedule.Keep up with Sean's film and video work at Vimeo.Learn more about Eugene Thomas at his website. And listen to Ian and Sean's first interview from waaaay back in Episode 5 of the Kicking the Seat Podcast, discussing the documentary Bailout!Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

“Martial Arts is a people building device, it teaches you how to live in a chaotic world and be happy.  If we make the best of our lives by doing our best in life, we can create the life that we want.  And that's really what life is about, being kind, courteous, respect, and respect for yourself.  Do things that make you feel good and help people to be kind.” – Ron Van CliefMy guest this episode is Ron Van Clief, The Black Dragon.  Mr. Van Clief is a multi-style Martial Arts Pioneer, a decorated Marine Corps and Vietnam Veteran, and an actor in Hollywood and Hong Kong Films.  He has competed in over 900 tournaments, a 5-time world Karate/Kung Fu Champion and a 15 time All American Champion.  At the age of 51 he competed in UFC 4 against at that time the Undefeated Royce Gracie.  In 2023 at the age of 80 he received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt and is actively competing in BJJ Competitions.  He is the 2002 Black Belt Magazine Instructor of the Year and has taught over 200,000 students over his career.  His extensive experience in Martial Arts covers Goju Ryu Karate, Wing Tsun, Modern Arnis, and BJJ.  This episode was all about the love of martial arts and how to stay young in the body, mind, and spirit.  We dive deep into Mr. Van Clief's story, starting from his early beginnings with Grand Master Moses Powell, to his Military Service, to his Hong Kong Films, to his UFC Fight against Royce Gracie, to his current quest of earning a BJJ Black Belt.  His story is one of great inspiration and mental fortitude.  We discuss his bouts with Racism and PTSD, he was lynched in the 1960's and his Helicopter was shot down in Vietnam.  My Key Take away is that martial arts can be used as a vehicle to heal from unimaginable traumatic experiences and live a life filled with great joy, happiness, and kindness.  We will all be faced with challenges, how we face these challenges is what will determine the quality of our lives.  We have to be strong enough to forgive and make the best of our lives by doing the best in our lives.  Life is really about respect, for yourself and for others.  The ultimate purpose of martial arts is to be kind, courteous, and help others by first helping ourselves.  We also dive deep into his training experience in many different styles, and his realization that no one style has it all, and that through extensive research and study we get to the point of finding our own unique style.  This is a special martial arts lifestyle episode that will inspire you to train and redefine your concept of aging and what is possible.

Martial arts legend Ron Van Clief never wanted to be a movie star. Known as the 'Black Dragon' - a name originally given to him by Bruce Lee and adopted as his screen persona in a series of Hong Kong kung fu movies in the 1970s - Ron was dismayed at the lack of genuine martial artists he met when working in action movies. For the Brooklyn-born former US Marine and New York City cop, Ron's passion for the fighting arts was formed from an early age in real-life combat situations - the trauma of which still remain with him to this day. He fought in the Vietnam War where he lost his younger brother; in the early 1960s, he narrowly survived a lynching at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan. The attack inspired the name of his autobiography, 'The Hanged Man', which has been made into a documentary by the martial artist and filmmaker, Robert Parham. In spite of this - and his continuing battle with PTSD - Ron remains steadfastly dedicated to developing his skills in the martial arts, with accolades too numerous to mention - five-time world karate and kung fu champion, 15-time All American champion, a New York Times bestselling author, and the founder of his own combat system, Chinese Goju-Ryu Karate. Ron was the first Black action star to lead a Hong Kong film, and although he may not have enjoyed the fame, it has assured his reputation as one of the most iconic and important figures in martial arts cinema. Now, aged 78, it is encouraging to hear that he still shows no sign of slowing down. Rico Guy (Corinthians Asheman Guy) was born in 1943. Both his Father and his Grandfather were Jewish rabbis. At the age of 11, Rico Guy began studying martial arts with Grandmaster Billy Davis, Jiu jitsu master from Staten Island. Rico wore and old suit coat rather than a gi top and his obi (belt) was a men's necktie. A couple of years later, GM Davis brought him to Sensei Conrad where he began the study of Ishin Ryu karate. After a few years Rico began his studies with Bill DeMonte and later, Chris DeBaise, studying Japanese Goju Karate along which included sparing, katas, and weaponry. Louie Delgado and Chuck Merriman were also students there. Rico and Louie Delgado, along with Owen Watson practiced Goju-ryu Karate at the “University Of The Streets” on 7th St, East Village in Manhattan. They wanted to upgrade their ranking system so they invited Frank Ruiz, a substantially rated Black Belt under Peter Urban. The four discussed opening a Goju dojo. Ruiz was teaching goju in the Bronx at the Nisei Judo school. They decided to borrow the name of “Nisei” from that school. The new school would be called Nisei Goju. Owen Watson, Louie Delgado and Rico Guy were hardcore fighters, but they agreed to teach the katas, since katas were not Frank Ruiz's forte. Besides the original 4, Rico Guy, Louie Delgado, Owen Watson and Frank Ruiz, many interesting martial artists came to learn at Nisei Goju including Ron Van Clief, Aaron Banks, Chuck Azulu, Malachi Lee, Skipper Ingram, Tony Zuzio, and Tom Lapuppet to name a few. The dojo's good reputation began to spread. At the height of the school's success, Rico Guy and Tony Zuzio left to open their Green Beret Goju School. From there, Rico was invited to teach at Yoshiteru Otani's Japan Cultural Center. He was the Master teacher for karate and also became a student of Kendo and Iaido and Shorinji Kempo. Hanshi Rico Guy received dan ranking in all those arts and became the 1st black American male to receive Dan ranking in Kendo. After several years, Rico Guy went on to open his own school, US Budo Kai Kan in New York City, NY. He and his highly trained Black Belts teach Rico Guy's Goju Karate, Iaido, Kendo, and the art he developed, Go Kempo-Jitsu. This wonderful school is the longest running school in New York City. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martial-maze/support

Star of the 1985 Motown-produced cult classic, The Last Dragon, we welcome Taimak to our first podcast of 2018. Taimak Guarriello was only 19 when he made his starring-role debut as the wise kung fu kid 'Bruce' Leroy Green in Berry Gordy's weird and wonderful action fantasy. It's a fun mix of martial arts and music, but the shoot wasn't always smooth, and Taimak explains some of the on-set disputes, rivalries and relationships which fuelled the production. He discusses working with legendary music mogul, Berry Gordy, and his co-stars Julius Carry and Vanity. But we also talk about his tough upbringing in New York and London, where his bohemian parents introduced him to many of the major celebrities of the time, including the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol and David Bowie. He was inspired by Bruce Lee and Shaw Brothers films, and even trained under the legendary 'Black Dragon' himself, Ron Van Clief. Taimak has remained true to the martial arts ever since, and he continues to train all the time as well as make his own movies, including a pseudo-sequel to The Last Dragon, called Master. You can read more about Master on the film's Indiegogo page. You can also keep up-to-date with all of Taimak's activities by following him on Instagram and Twitter. Also on this episode, I spend a bit of time chatting to the actor, fitness trainer and filmmaker, Daniel Lue, who has just made his own kung fu movie, called Kung Fu Theatre. Its a zero-budget tribute to the old-school kung fu movies he loved in his youth, and you can watch it for free on Amazon.
