She shares her concerns that ideological messaging is eclipsing artistic and historical exploration, and questions whether a heavy-handed approach to inclusion is putting off audiences.Plus, pop star Katy Perry has made history by joining Blue Origin's first all-female crewed space flight. Rosie Kay is an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer whose career has taken her across the world, using the power of movement to explore deep societal issues. She's the founder of K2CO and Freedom in the Arts, a vital organization dedicated to protecting artistic freedom and defending artists against cancel culture.Rosie is also a fellow board advisor for the ProHuman Foundation, where we work alongside other thought leaders to push back against the growing culture of division. Her own journey in the arts has come with its challenges—particularly as political ideologies and conformity have taken hold in creative spaces. She's been at the center of debates on gender ideology, free expression, and the role of self-discipline in art, and today, we're diving into all of it.We'll explore how self-censorship is creeping into the arts, why gender ideology is impacting women's rights and spaces, and why open debate is essential for understanding one another. Rosie's perspective is a powerful reminder that courage, resilience, and a return to shared humanity are more important than ever.TakeawaysDance is a powerful medium for expressing societal issues.Artists often face pushback for challenging the status quo.The arts have become increasingly conformist in recent years.Self-discipline is essential for artists alongside self-expression.Political alignment in the arts can lead to self-censorship.Fear and loathing have created a hostile environment for artists.Gender ideology impacts women's rights and spaces.Art connects the body, mind, and spirit in profound ways.Open debate is crucial for understanding differing viewpoints. The Pro Human Foundation promotes shared humanity and diverse beliefs.photo credit ~ Brian SlaterLearn more about and connect with Rosie Kay by getting the full show notes What have you done today to make your life a better life? Rosie Kay is a dancer, choreographer, “old-school feminist”, and co-founder of Freedom In The Arts in the UK. Both cancelled and resurrected, she's also a fascinating and articulate speaker. She joined the Dorx back in November to talk about dance, brains, arts organizations, making controversial work, the “theater of dehumanization,” liberal values and their discontents, artificial intelligence, Choreography 101, pattern recognition, awkwardness, the decline of physical culture, disembodiment, COVID, dance vs. visual art, arts education, physical education, soldiering, tennis, walking, cycling, and the taboo of excellence. It took us a while to release this episode because at least one of us was paralyzed in a winter slough of despond, but it was worth the wait. In the spring of 2021, award-winning dancer and choreographer Rosie Kay performed a solo show to wide acclaim. The show included three pieces addressing women's experiences in life and dance, with the final piece, “Adult Female Dancer,” serving as Rosie's memoir. Just a few months later, she resigned from her own dance company following accusations of transphobia. In the fall of 2021, Rosie invited dancers from her production of “Romeo + Juliet” to her home for a dinner party. A late-night conversation about an upcoming production of Virginia Woolf's “Orlando” revealed Rosie's support for women-only spaces and her acknowledgment that biological sex is real. A handful of her dancers reported this “transphobia” to the Rosie Kay Dance Company board of directors, initiating investigations. The board wanted Rosie to be “re-educated.” Rosie resigned from the company she ran for nearly 20 years and launched a new company, K2CO. She only employs dancers who are committed to freedom of speech and artistic expression. Rosie Kay graduated from the London Contemporary Dance School in 1998. She performed internationally and founded The Rosie Kay Dance Company in 2004. She was the Leverhulme Artist in Residence at the University of Oxford, the choreographer for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and received Special Commendation from the Royal Society of Public Health. Awards from Stuttgart's International Solo Dance Festival, The Queen, and Bonnie Bird are among her many accolades. Her work has been featured on stage and in film. Today we speak with Rosie Kay. Rosie is a British choreographer, best known for her shows 5 Soldiers, MK Ultra, and choreographing the handover in the 2018 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony. In 2019 Rosie resigned from her dance company following an investigation after claims were made by her dancers regarding her views on gender and biological sex. In 2022 she launched the K2CO dance company, where company members are asked to sign a commitment to freedom of expression, the charter of creation, affirming that the workplace will be a safe space, where we will be free to express our thoughts and feelings without fear of being silenced, shut down, or canceled. In this episode, we discuss her background as a dancer and choreographer, the discourse around representation and marginalized groups in the arts, gender ideology and the importance of biological sex, the role of art in human connection, FAIR in the arts, and Rosie's plans for the future.

"I didn't know what personal persecution felt like before. I could imagine, of course. But there is something very physical about those experiences of being hounded or being piled on by a mob that feels very visceral." Rosie Kay talks to FiLiA's Raquel Rosario Sánchez about how she came to be forced out of the dance company that she founded after bullying from inside the organisation and a targeted campaign to ruin her reputation. The controversy arose from opinions, expressed inside her own home, that biological sex is real, material to dance and that these conversations must be had openly and without abuse. She will not go quietly. On the contrary, she has decided to push back bolder and louder than ever before. Rosie Kay is an experienced choreographer and accomplished dance professional. She graduated from the London Contemporary Dance School in 1998, founded the Rosie Kay Dance Company in Birmingham in 2004. Her productions have been acclaimed for their creativity and their sensitive treatment of topics such as sexual violence, conspiracy theories and military intervention. Since leaving the Rosie Kay Dance Company Rosie has launched a new dance company called K2Co, which is preparing to delve into the sex and gender debate, exploring it through dance. “K2CO will create, produce and tour three new works over three years as a ‘Trilogy of Sex' exploring themes and ideas around sex, identity, technology, bodies, women's history and literature,” the company states in its mission statement. You can read her first-person essay ‘My body will not be erased', which she wrote for UnHerd. Rosie Kay aka Thiskindagirl is an ethical non monogamy educator based in the UK. Her story of discovery and her mission to remove the stigma from and swinging and ENM is an inspiring one.
In the first episode of Later Dater, Lucy is getting stuck right in and learning all about swinging. For many people, the term 'swinging' conjures images of car keys in a bowl at a dinner party and partner swapping - but is that actually the case? (Has it ever been?) To find out, Lucy's talking to Non-Monogamy Coach Rosie Kay AKA This Kinda Girl. After navigating the swinging lifestyle herself for the last ten years, Rosie works with people to explore ways they can open up their relationships, as well as to banish the stigma and myths associated with the lifestyle. Lucy and Rosie discuss the ways that swinging and ethical non-monogamy can lead to more satisfying and fulfilled relationships, her own journey into the lifestyle, and the judgements she's faced as an ENM person. In this week's episode, Alice and Nicolas interview dancer and choreographer Rosie Kay. Rosie began dancing at the age of three, founding the Rosie Kay Dance Company in 2004. With multiple award winning shows to her name, Rosie suffered a serious knee injury in 2006, and this got her thinking about other jobs which involve bodily risk. She ended up embedding with an infantry battalion to research the risks that soldiers take, and this led to her development of the dance show 5 Soldiers: the Body is the Frontline, which has since toured the UK to critical acclaim. 5 Soldiers is an incredible piece of physical theatre which captures the experiences of one woman and four men as they train, prepare for war and eventually deploy to Afghanistan. It gives audiences a glimpse of modern military culture, of how women fare in the army, and of what it is like to be at war, both mentally and physically. Focused on bodily experiences in particular, it visualises war in really powerful and thought-provoking ways, so we were excited to ask Rosie how it came about, what she was trying to communicate with it, and how it has impacted on audience's perceptions of soldiering and warfare. Among other questions, we asked Rosie:What can dance as a form of storytelling bring to representations of war?How did her experience of embedding with an infantry battalion shape her understanding of soldiering and combat, and how did it influence the way she decided to represent war on stage? Why did she decide to focus attention on the human body, as the frontline of military conflict? What did she want to communicate to audiences about the emotional side of soldiering? What does 5 Soldiers reveal about gender dynamics in the military? How have audiences reacted, and how might watching 5 Soldiers influence people's habits of visualising war? We hope you enjoy the episode! For a version of our podcast with close captions, please use this link.
