Episode 296: Léo Terrando from Studio Terrando on choreographing interiors for timeless residential and hospitality spaces

In this episode of Talking Architecture & Design, Clémence Carayol sits down with Interior Designer Léo Terrando to explore how hospitality thinking is reshaping the way we design and live. With over two decades of experience across hotels and high-end homes, Terrando brings a perspective grounded in how spaces are actually used, how people move through them, and how they feel along the way. He explains that hospitality design has taught him to think beyond aesthetics. In that world, every detail contributes to an experience, from the first impression on arrival to the transitions between rooms. That same mindset now informs his residential work, where flow, comfort and atmosphere are just as important as how a space looks. The conversation also touches on the idea of timelessness. Rather than following fast-moving trends, Terrando focuses on creating interiors that feel relevant for years to come. For him, it's about balance, combining contemporary elements with materials and layouts that can age gracefully. Simplicity, quality and a clear sense of purpose tend to outlast anything overly decorative. As the lines between hospitality and residential design continue to blur, clients are increasingly looking for homes that offer more than just a place to live. There's a growing appetite for spaces that feel considered and experience-driven, with touches that echo the comfort and ease of a well-designed hotel. Looking ahead, Terrando sees this overlap only deepening, especially as developments bring together private living with shared amenities. For designers, that means thinking carefully about how different spaces connect and support modern lifestyles. As he suggests, good design today isn't just about creating beautiful interiors—it's about shaping the way people live in them.

Professional dancer Sharna Burgess joins The Neil Haley Show to discuss her recovery from a serious knee injury sustained during Dancing with the Stars dress rehearsal. In a candid conversation, Burgess explains how a seemingly minor wardrobe malfunction—an overly long skirt—led to a grade two MCL tear when she stepped on the fabric and her knee bent unnaturally. The injury is particularly significant given her medical history: 16 years earlier, she suffered an ACL tear that she danced on too soon, ultimately rupturing it completely. This painful lesson has informed her current decision-making process about when to return to the competition floor. Burgess shares that former dance partner and Pittsburgh Steelers player Antonio Brown reached out with support, physical therapy recommendations, and encouragement to prioritize her health, demonstrating the lasting friendships formed through the show.Despite being sidelined from performing, Burgess remains deeply involved with her celebrity partner James, serving as his choreographer and teacher while a replacement partner handles the on-floor dancing duties. She expresses complete confidence in James's talent and work ethic, predicting he'll reach the finals and deserves to be there. Burgess emphasizes that her true passion lies in creating choreography and telling stories through dance, making each day at work a pleasure despite the occasional creative blocks. She acknowledges the difficult balance between her desire to return immediately and the necessity of protecting her long-term career—rushing back could sideline her for six months, affecting not only the current season but potentially the next one as well. Looking ahead, Burgess discusses the upcoming Dancing with the Stars Live tour launching immediately after the season concludes, which she describes as refreshing and liberating since it features professional dancers performing without judges, celebrities, or teaching responsibilities. Raised in the Bronx, Darrin opens up about growing up alongside Latinos in his neighborhood and how Latino culture, friendships, and community played a lasting and positive role in his upbringing. He also opens up about being first cousins with Taraji P. Henson and how talent, faith, and perseverance run deep in his family. One of the most jaw dropping moments of the interview is when Darrin reveals why he walked away from choreography at the height of his career, right after winning a VMA for *NSYNC’s iconic “Bye Bye Bye” routine, a dance he owns as his intellectual property. The very choreography later appeared in the film Deadpool, and for which the production had to properly compensate him for its use. Darrin also breaks down his transition into acting, starring in beloved series like Soul Food and The Family Business, along with his evolution into an author and motivational speaker focused on purpose, ownership, and spiritual alignment. This is a must listen conversation about culture, creativity, faith, and knowing when to pivot.

Discussions cover the role of risk managers, transparency benefits, the emergence of DeFi as backbone infrastructure for fintechs, and how platforms like Coinbase now use Morpho behind the scenes.Paul reflects on how Morpho enables global liquidity, allows businesses and individuals to create custom lending markets, and how DeFi's open competition leads to better rates and more efficient markets. Alfonso Cervera and Irvin Gonzalez, two of the founding members of Primera Generación Dance Collective, both grew up in Southern California households where dancing was a vital part of family life, though neither was encouraged to pursue it professionally. Alfonso's first training was in ballet folklórico, a form he embraced as a child largely thanks to his own curiosity and insistence. Irvin, inspired by early seasons of “So You Think You Can Dance,” taught himself pirouettes in secret in his parents' garage. Both men eventually studied dance at UC Riverside (UCR), where they also first came out to their families, not only as queer but also as dancers. UCR is also where the two met and fell in love.It was during graduate school that Alfonso and Irvin, along with fellow dancers Rosa Rodriguez-Frazier and Patty Huerta, realized the creative power of coming together. Each brought a unique movement background and a shared desire to explore and celebrate their Mexican American identities on the concert stage. The resulting collective, Primera Generación, now almost ten years strong, continues to challenge conventional notions of contemporary dance with work that is joyous, confrontational and often intentionally messy. That messiness is key. The collective embraces the concept of “desmadre,” a Spanish term that can refer to disorder, exuberance or both, as both a choreographic strategy and a call to reflection and social change. In this interview, Alfonso and Irvin, now professors at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, discuss the origins of Primera Generación Dance Collective, how they've navigated nearly a decade of creative collaboration and why their messiest pieces are often their most meaningful. They also reflect on what it means to be first-generation artists in the Midwest today and how they hope the next generation of dancers can shape the collective's future.https://www.instagram.com/primerageneraciondance/

Silas Farley, former New York City Ballet dancer and current Dean of the Colburn School's Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, explores the profound connections between classical ballet, Christian worship, and embodied spirituality. From his early exposure to liturgical dance in a charismatic Lutheran church to his career as a professional dancer and choreographer, Farley illuminates how the physicality of ballet can express deep spiritual truths and serve as an act of worship.Episode Highlights from Silas Farley“The physicality of ballet is cruciform. The dancer stands in a turned-out position... the body becomes the intersection of the vertical and the horizontal plane.”“Sin makes the soul curve in on itself, whereas holiness or wholeness in God opens us up.”“We are Christian humanists. We don't need to be intimidated by beauty.”“There's knowledge and insight in all the different parts of our bodies, not just in our brain.”“The mystery of the incarnation is that when the creator of all things wanted to make himself known to his creation, he didn't come as a vapor or as a mountain or as a bird. It's a more complete revelation of the body.”Creates more complete revelation of body's musculaturePhysicality conveys “spiritual turnout” - openness/receptiveness“Spiritual turnout: that you are open   and receptive and generous. And that's embodied in the physicality of ballet.”“So much of what developed as ballet as we know, it happened at the court of Louis the XIV in the  1660-1670s.”“It's not artificial, it's actually supernatural.”Physical & Spiritual Connections in Ballet“Our walk  with God is that he's  defining us so that we are becoming open. And he's not a brain on a stick. He's the God man. He has a jawbone and he went through puberty and he has wounds like the beautiful hymn. It says, rich wounds, yet visible and beauty glorified. The mystery of the incarnation is that when the creator of all things wanted to make  himself known to his creation, he didn't come as a  vapor or as a mountain or as a bird, but he came as a man. And so he sublimates and affirms the glory of his creation, the materiality of his creation and the body as the crown of his creation by coming as a man.”Church needs more embodied practicesBallet offers counterpoint to disembodied tendenciesImportance of physical discipline in spiritual formationRomans 12:1 and making our bodies as living sacrificesHow to Experience Ballet“There's nothing you need to know before going to experience ballet.  You have a body, you have eyes, you have ears. But just go experience it.And if you can, I would really encourage people almost as much or more than  watching it go see if like your local YMCA or  something has an adult ballet class, or if you're a kid, maybe ask your parents to sign you up to go try a class and just feel what that turned-out physicality feels like in your own body. It's so beautiful. My guests this week are Dustyn Martincich & Phoebe Rumsey who have edited and authored (along with a number of other contributors) a recent book titled Dance In Musical Theatre — A History of the Body in Movement. As anyone who has listened to this podcast regularly knows, much like the authors of this book, I believe that dance has always been one of the most important and key elements of musical theater—from Oklahoma! and West Side Story to Spring Awakening and Hamilton. By pulling together a range of diverse authors and perspectives, this book not only tracks the emergence of the dancer as a key figure in the genre, it also connects the contributions of past and present choreographers from the beginning of the 20th century and right up to today.  Dustyn Martincich is a Professor of Theatre and Dance at Bucknell University. Her research interests involve investigating narrative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary possibilities in theatre and dance performance and musical theatre dance studies that focuses on the work of the ensemble. That's especially true for dance, where women continue to hold fewer artistic director positions and receive fewer choreographic opportunities than men despite making up a significant majority of the dance workforce overall.  As full-blown data nerds here at CI, we believe you can't change what you don't measure. So we sat down with the team at Dance Data Project® to discuss the latest industry stats and consider how to carve a path forward for gender equity in dance.
