Silas Farley, former New York City Ballet dancer and current Dean of the Colburn School's Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, explores the profound connections between classical ballet, Christian worship, and embodied spirituality. From his early exposure to liturgical dance in a charismatic Lutheran church to his career as a professional dancer and choreographer, Farley illuminates how the physicality of ballet can express deep spiritual truths and serve as an act of worship.Episode Highlights from Silas Farley“The physicality of ballet is cruciform. The dancer stands in a turned-out position... the body becomes the intersection of the vertical and the horizontal plane.”“Sin makes the soul curve in on itself, whereas holiness or wholeness in God opens us up.”“We are Christian humanists. We don't need to be intimidated by beauty.”“There's knowledge and insight in all the different parts of our bodies, not just in our brain.”“The mystery of the incarnation is that when the creator of all things wanted to make himself known to his creation, he didn't come as a vapor or as a mountain or as a bird. Because if our toes are straightforward, like the way we're designed, you only see a certain amount of the leg. Whereas if the body stands turned out, you see the whole inside of the musculature of the leg. It's a more complete revelation of the body.”Creates more complete revelation of body's musculaturePhysicality conveys “spiritual turnout” - openness/receptiveness“Spiritual turnout: that you are open and receptive and generous. And that's embodied in the physicality of ballet.”“So much of what developed as ballet as we know, it happened at the court of Louis the XIV in the 1660-1670s.”“It's not artificial, it's actually supernatural.”Physical & Spiritual Connections in Ballet“Our walk with God is that he's defining us so that we are becoming open. And that's enough.”Arvo Part: “Music is white light, and the prism is the soul of the listener.”“The musical ideas are refracted through the hearer.”“The audience is always in my heart and mind.”“I always think of the artwork as an act of hospitality. … I'm just setting the table.”What's Unique about Ballet as a Physical ArtformBeautiful interconnectednessAsking the body to reach to its limits“The Infinite Line” in BalletRadiating out into multiple eternal lines at the same timeConstant reaching in many directions at onceCruciform positioning: intersection of vertical and horizontal planes“The body becomes radiant”Use of “épaulement”—spiraling of body around spine's axisReveals pulse points (neck, wrists) creating vulnerable energy exchange with audienceOpening up the life force of the dancerNo separation between dancer and instrument (“I am the work of art”)Cruciform physicalityContemporary Cultural ContextModern culture increasingly disembodied due to screens/digital media“We live in an increasingly disembodied culture, we are absorbed with screens two dimensional, uh, highly edited and curated, mediated self presentation as opposed to like visceral nitty gritty blood, sweat, tears, good, bad, and ugly of life itself. So we get insulated from the step that makes life what it is.”Education often treats people as “brains on sticks”“The Christian life is a lifestyle of in embodied discipleship to the God man, Jesus Christ. And he's not a brain on a stick. He's the God man. He has a jawbone and he went through puberty and he has wounds like the beautiful hymn. It says, rich wounds, yet visible and beauty glorified. The mystery of the incarnation is that when the creator of all things wanted to make himself known to his creation, he didn't come as a vapor or as a mountain or as a bird, but he came as a man. And so he sublimates and affirms the glory of his creation, the materiality of his creation and the body as the crown of his creation by coming as a man.”Church needs more embodied practicesBallet offers counterpoint to disembodied tendenciesImportance of physical discipline in spiritual formationRomans 12:1 and making our bodies as living sacrificesHow to Experience Ballet“There's nothing you need to know before going to experience ballet. You have a body, you have eyes, you have ears. That's all you need. Just let it wash over you.Let it work on you in its own kind of visceral way, and let that be an entry point to not be intimidated by the, the music, or the wordlessness or the tutu's or the point shoes or whatever. There's so many different stylistic manifestations of ballet. But just go experience it.And if you can, I would really encourage people almost as much or more than watching it go see if like your local YMCA or something has an adult ballet class, or if you're a kid, maybe ask your parents to sign you up to go try a class and just feel what that turned-out physicality feels like in your own body. It's so beautiful. It's very empowering.”Production NotesThis podcast featured Silas Farley and Macie BridgeEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Macie Bridge, Alexa Rollow, Zoë Halaban, Kacie Barrett & Emily BrookfieldA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/give

My guests this week are Dustyn Martincich & Phoebe Rumsey who have edited and authored (along with a number of other contributors) a recent book titled Dance In Musical Theatre — A History of the Body in Movement. As anyone who has listened to this podcast regularly knows, much like the authors of this book, I believe that dance has always been one of the most important and key elements of musical theater—from Oklahoma! and West Side Story to Spring Awakening and Hamilton. By pulling together a range of diverse authors and perspectives, this book not only tracks the emergence of the dancer as a key figure in the genre, it also connects the contributions of past and present choreographers from the beginning of the 20th century and right up to today. Dustyn Martincich is a Professor of Theatre and Dance at Bucknell University. Her research interests involve investigating narrative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary possibilities in theatre and dance performance and musical theatre dance studies that focuses on the work of the ensemble. She has movement directed, choreographed, and performed for concert dance and theatrical stages. She has been recently published in Studies in Musical Theatre, and in edited collections like Gender Sex, and Sexuality in Musical Theatre (edited by Kelly Kessler), Dueling Grounds: Revolution and Revelation in the Musical Hamilton (edited by Paul Laird and Mary Jo Lodge), and Toni Morrison: Forty Years in The Clearing (edited by Carmen Gillespie). Phoebe Rumsey is a Senior Lecturer in Musical Theatre and Course Leader of the BA (Hons) Musical Theater degree at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. She received her PhD from The Graduate Center, CUNY, and holds an MA in Performance Studies from NYU, an MA in Theatre from UNLV, and a BFA in Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University. A scholar and practitioner, her research has been published in The Routledge Companion to Theatre and Politics, Studies in Musical Theatre, The Routledge Companion to the Contemporary Musical and Reframing The Musical: Race, Culture, and Identity (Palgrave). She is the author of Embodied Nostalgia: Social Dance, Communities and the Choreographing of Musical Theatre (Routledge). Along with her engagement in academic studies Dr. Rumsey has worked extensively as a performer and choreographer. How to become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! Across a variety of artistic genres, we see persistent gender imbalances among the creatives and leaders who make the art possible. That's especially true for dance, where women continue to hold fewer artistic director positions and receive fewer choreographic opportunities than men despite making up a significant majority of the dance workforce overall. As full-blown data nerds here at CI, we believe you can't change what you don't measure. So we sat down with the team at Dance Data Project® to discuss the latest industry stats and consider how to carve a path forward for gender equity in dance. Dance Data Project® promotes gender equity in the dance industry through metrics-based analysis. In this interview, they overview their latest research, programming, and advocacy work to showcase and uplift women across the dance industry—from artistic and executive leaders, to lighting designers and commissioned composers. Veteran hip-hop choreographer Fatima Robinson talks about her legendary career, from working with Michel Jackson, Aaliyah and Dr. Dre, to choreographing two Super Bowls, and her latest project — choreographing the dance numbers in the film “The Color Purple.”
“What is essential is the hosting, is how you meet your guests, like having a dinner party. Either you set up the date, you buy the food and serve it, or you take days in preparing how the flowers are going to be, how the music is going to sound. Seeing that whole little journey of senses and touch points. And that for me is completely the same as staging a production in a theater.” As we celebrate the festivities of the holidays with family and friends, we're in great company with Alexander Kølpin, Founder, Owner and Creative Director of Kølpin Hotels, a collection of 3 bespoke boutique hotels in and near Copenhagen, Denmark, where he choreographs a musicality amongst his team and his guests while the hotels themselves, with their history, artistry and ambiance serve as the perfect backdrop for their experience. Helenekilde Badehotel, a historic gem and Tisvildeleje Strandhotel, a romantic gem, are both nestled along the beautiful Danish coastline in Tisvilde, encompassing a rich history filled with charm and elegance at what were once private residences. Hotel Sanders, an award winning, intimate and bespoke luxury hotel, stands with poise and grace in the historic part of Copenhagen. In this episode, Alexander showcases how his past experience in the performing arts transcended into his passion for staging experiences for his guests, his audience as he sees it, and how each moment of their stay is similar to an act in a show, ending in an anticipatory grand finale. Top Takeaways [1:45] Surrounded by creativity from an early age, Alexander Kølpin became infatuated with dancing ballet over playing ball. Given his natural talent, he studied at the Royal Danish Ballet School which transpired into a storied career as classical ballet dancer, theater director, producer & performer, and film & documentary actor & choreographer. [5:20] How Alexander's past creative experience in the performing arts transferred across different mediums into the musicality of the hospitality experience he provides today. [10:00] Why Alexander approaches the design of his hotels with a “high end yet low key” aesthetic and atmosphere - to pay homage to their original intent as homes, inviting people to come as guests and leave as friends. [12:50] As if writing a ballet, play or movie script, Kølpin Hotels follows a dramaturgical technique when crafting the guest journey following Acts 1, 2 and 3 to build the story. [17:30] Entering Hotel Sanders is like stepping into a theater. Guests will always remain center stage, but the scenography and carefully curated interiors are the elegant and exquisite backdrop for their experience. [21:00] A hidden gem in the historic center of Copenhagen neighboring the Royal Theater and Royal Family's residences, where guests can take a dip in the canal or stroll the neighborhood's cobbled lanes to find countless quality restaurants, contemporary art galleries, museums, and world class shopping. [23:00] Coined the “Hampton's of Copenhagen”, Denmark's coastal and charming town, Tisvilde, is home to Kølpin Hotel's sister properties in Helenekilde Badehotel and Tisvildeleje Strandhotel. How does a Grease loving, teenage aerobic instructor from humble beginnings in his beloved Cali, Colombia, end up living out the ‘American Dream' as the ‘Father' of an international fitness craze, and the Co-founder of a $500M exercise class company? Today, Sandra and Sandy sit down with a true fitness visionary and the creator of the Zumba phenomenon, Beto Pérez, who shares his whirlwind journey from the vibrant streets of Colombia to the sizzling energy of Miami, and how he fused fitness and Latin music, turning exercise into an exhilarating party. His truly remarkable story, as shared here today, highlights the transformative power of happiness, the courage to chase your dreams, and the creative spark that has fuelled this passionately determined innovator's journey each energetically choreographed step of the way. Raised in Cali, Colombia, by a single mother, where he worked 3 jobs by age 14 to support his family, Beto Pérez 's passion for dance eventually led him to Miami, where he invented ‘Zumba', a fitness craze that absolutely broke the mold of what gym-goers had ever experienced before. In collaboration with Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion, he established Zumba Fitness LLC as an organization that sells Zumba content and products. Today, 15 million people in more than 200,000 locations in 186 countries take Zumba classes every week, and Zumba Fitness LLC is worth an estimated $500, 000, 000.
