Nick Cohen talks to author, intelligence expert & one-time career diplomat Arthur SnellDonald Trump appears to have unequivocally sided with Vladamir Putin's malignant regime in Moscow and has made clear his intention to fuck over Ukraine, Europe and the UK - jeopardising the security of all and making World War 3 much more likely? How can the West react? It's not too late for Europe & Canada to re-tool but action to boost defence spending needs to happen straight away.A Europe in-denial caught on the hop - Trump pulls the security blanket despite warningsArthur, a one-time career diplomat with the Foreign Office, said the UK was nervous about how EU membership where it impacted the UK's relationship with the U.S before Brexit. This was before the UK was eventually dragged out of the EU together - with Brexiter nutjobs insisting on the hardest separation terms possible. Now brexiter dreams of a transatlantic 'Anglo-sphere' love-in that would replace EU membership has collapsed.Arthur says, "I would say we were warned. Now, what I think what we weren't warned about was we were warned that America was losing interest in Europe, becoming frustrated with the Europeans unwillingness to spend money to defend themselves, and also America realising it had its own fish to fry, if you like, in the Pacific."Of course, what we were not warned, because it really is the most mind boggling aspect of all of this, is having an American president who basically sides with Russia on the big geopolitical issues when it pertains to Europe, and that is the, the sort of utterly horrifying element of, of what's unfolded really in the last few days."Need to act now in Europe's defence before it's too lateNick asks Arthur how he'd be advising Sir Keir Starmer. Arthur says, "I would be advising is that we need to rip up a lot of the basic tenets that underpin our defence and security structures and think very hard and very fast about European security as a single entity. And this isn't about the EU or about NATO. It's about a continent that's called Europe that is geographically pretty distinct."Read all about itArthur Snell's substack column is Not all doom & his regular inciteful podcast is Behind the Lines. Nick Cohen gets The Lowdown on the Putin lie machine from well-renowned Kremlin disinformation expert and author Peter Pomerantsev. Earlier this month, the US seized Kremlin-run websites and charged two Russian state employees - of the TV channel Russia Today with conspiracy to commit money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The pair remain at large. Peter's first book, the best-seller Nothing is true and Everything is possible broke new ground by exposing the inner workings of Russia's misinformation and disinformation armoury. His third book is How to win an information war: The propagandist who outwitted Hitler. Peter talks about the growing sophistication of Putin's disinformation machine which he is using in his war against Ukraine and in his attempts to influence elections, including the United States where his favoured candidate and convicted felon Donald Trump is hoping for re-election. Peter says the Kremlin's best foreign agents are the so-called "useful idiots" in influential positions who are not even aware that they are being manipulated into helping Putin and his various plots.Donald Trump may worship at the altar of his hero Vladimir Putin. But both men have a strikingly similar tone of discourse - epic mendacity and disinformation snarled sneeringly and sarcastically at anyone seeking to hold them to account. I stumbled onto the writing of David Grayson as I reflected on my (sometimes) daily reading of The University Library. Grayson's way of seeing the good in people and letting curiosity turn his feelings of urban oppression into natural wonder were inspiring. Open, curious conversations with people are kind of what this podcast is about.  So, I went on the hunt for someone to talk to about the guy whose method of talking to people was so inspiring.  And I found Nick Grabbe (grab-AY). Nick worked for decades as a journalist in Amherst, Massachusetts. Born in Washington, D.C., and custom-built to work as a big-city journalist, Grabbe turned to what he calls “simple living” in the small Massachusetts town he moved to. That's what Grayson himself extolled for many years in his columns written for newspapers in the early 20th century.  But, it turns out … there was no David Grayson. It was a pseudonym. Who was this Grayson guy? Grabbe will explain. And along the way he'll tell us about journalism and the appeal of a less hectic way of life—both of which held Grayson's attention, too, as you'll discover ...  More to see:  Want to learn more about a simple-living, small-town-focused journalist's career? Buy Nick's self-published Print and Privilege: Newspaper Writer Tells His Story (2021, Off the Common Books).  Do you want to try out a David Grayson book, or an essay or character study or two? Gutenberg's offerings (website) Internet Archive's offerings; just ignore the ones that look newer (website) Read more from David and his wife on the simple-living blog Adventures in the Good Life. If we have titillated your curiosity, you can learn more from an online exhibit about Grayson and an event Nick spoke at. The website features photos and letters like the ones Grabbe references in this podcast. Read Nick's entire essay/speech/presentation on Grayson he delivered at the event referenced above.

In this episode of Object Matters host Dr Craig Barker is joined by art historian and author Nicholas Croggon. They speak on the Power Institute, the Power Collection and the Light and Darkness exhibition. Nick discusses a work in the Power Collection by American artist Alan Sonfist. Sonfist is a US based artist most often associated with the birth of the Land or Earth Art movement. Crystalline enclosure was created in 1970, early in Sonfist's career. The work features a glass globe with a mineral compound inside. As the air around it heats up, the compound sublimes into a gas eventually crystallising on the curved walls of the globe. When the crystal lattice increases its density, parts of the compound drop back down to pile again in the neck, whereupon the cycle begins again. We are invited by Sonfist to observe a process. Nick explains how the work in Sydney was part of Sonfist's broader project of making visible our entanglement in the processes of the natural world. Nick also explores his interest in the language of visual culture and its relationship with human psychology through the work in the Chau Chak Wing Museum.   Guest: Nick Croggon is Events and Programs Officer at The Power Institute. NBA fans were treated to one of stranger and more hilarious moments of the season earlier this week, when Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker took exception to the actions of the opposing team's mascot, The Raptor. Welcome to But Where Are You From?... A podcast by a late 20-something millennial learning about life as a British Born Chinese. I’m Viv, the host of the podcast. I talk about life being a British East Asian; from family life, to work, dating, relationships, food, racism, and general culture. In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Nick. We talk about finding your community as a gender fluid person. What gender fluidity means, being Chinese, how LGBT is STILL illegal in Malaysia (WTF), how genderising starts from a very young age, from phrases such as ‘boys will be boys’. How terms like ‘man up’, ‘being a pussy’ harms us all, unpicking habits in our daily life that harm LGTBQ+ people, I found out that Miley Cyrus is gender fluid, JK Rowling’s rhetoric on the trans community, mental health, similarities between being a painter decorator and makeup, and most importantly, celebrating being gender fluid. Nick also gives great advice that applies to all of us: be kind and listen. Nick Santonastasso is a medical miracle and a truly wonderful human. He is one of four people alive with the rare genetic condition, Hanhart Syndrome, and has overcome incredible  odds to not only survive but thrive. Nick has gone on to become an inspirational keynote speaker, an internationally known bodybuilder, and a fitness model – despite missing both his legs and one arm since birth. In today's episode of the Daily Helping, this high-energy youth shares his amazing story, showing people that anyone can thrive if they have the determination and willpower to go after what they want. He has made cameos on TV shows like “The Walking Dead” and has become a social media sensation, gaining more than 1 million followers on “Vine” in less than a year. Now, Nick is sharing his experience with people all over the world as a keynote speaker at schools, universities, nonprofits as well as Fortune 500 companies. He is using his challenges to inspire others to push beyond their suffering and live a life that has NO LIMITS. Nick has already helped to inspire such giants as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tony Robbins, and Gary Vaynerchuk. Nick's book, Victim to Victor: How to Overcome the Victim Mentality To Live The Life You Love includes twelve personal stories from Nick's journey, each followed with actionable strategies to consider and apply to your life.   “Your authentic self is the sexiest, most beautiful thing you can be.”   Nick's thoughts on the power of reframing: In your life, are you going to be the victim in each situation, or will you be the victor? It's up to you to decide how each event affects you and how you react. Consider that things are happening for you, not to you.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   People need to do more things that they love. They need to do more things that make them feel good, and they need to realize: success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure. You can have all the money in the world, but if you aren't doing something that fulfills you and makes you feel good, there will always be an emptiness there. Life is all about perspective, and the more perspective you can gain, the more easy and simple your life is. The things that we complain about on a day to day basis - in the grand scheme of life, they aren't problems or challenges.   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. It's easier than ever to become a terrible husband. Our connected world has caused the outside world of news, work and friends to compete for the limited attention we have when we're at home.  If you're not careful e-mails, status updates and the internet can rob your wife of her rightful place as the center of your life. This year my wife and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I'm happy to say our relationship has never been stronger. This wasn't always so. For much of our marriage, I was a terrible husband. I allowed the pressures of work and the outside world to dominate my attention at the expense of my wife. Luckily, I woke up, got my priorities straight and can now say we have an awesome marriage. I want this for you too. In this week's episode, Nick Pavlidis shares his journey from terrible husband to husbandly awesomeness (He wouldn't say this, but I will).  We discuss: Signs you could be a terrible husband. The importance of taking inventory of your actions and priorities. How to apply workplace leadership skills at home. Ways to make your wife your top priority. Why it all starts with you. How to walk your talk. The benefits of investing in your marriage. The magic of continually asking yourself,  "What is the next right thing?" Join Nick in Becoming a Better Husband Nick is, admittedly, a work in progress.
