Despite a scintillating first-half display, Forest could not put the ball in the net, and were made to pay in the 97th minute when the second of two late VAR decisions went against them. In truth, it's difficult to know where to start with the late calls. No-one (if any) in the ground expected the first one to be chalked off, but by the letter of the law it was correct. No-one from Forest was disputing the second one, although stills show that Hugo Ekitike was in an offside position, but deemed not to be interfering 🤷♂️ Rich and Baz try and untangle all of that, as well as discussing tactics, subs and confidence. The view from the opposition comes from Neil of The Anfield Wrap. What a win in Vitor Pereira's first match - this was as close to flawless as you could imagine as Forest controlled the match from start to finish, and kept that valuable clean sheet. They even overcame two of their weaknesses, by scoring from a corner, and getting goals (rather than conceding them) either side of half-time. Rich is joined on the line by a rather giddy George Edwards, just back in his hotel room in Istanbul after a long day, to review the goals, the atmosphere, the experience, and what this means for the rest of the Reds' season. The match against Wolves was awful - don't let the stats fool you, as the visitors were actually more likely to score at the end of each half. The game was overshadowed by the news, announced just after midnight, that Sean Dyche had been relieved of his duties as Head Coach, with Forest looking for a fourth incumbent in the managerial hotseat since September. Rich, Baz and Tom talk about the game and the consquences.
It was a bad night for the Reds but a very good one for Leeds United, as they took full advantage of a raucous home crowd and some tactical tweaks, as well as some good old-fashioned hard work. Lorenzo Lucca's goal on début was scant consolation, as Forest are now looking nervously over their shoulders again. Rich is joined by Katie, after a cold wet night in the away section, and we are thankful to Ger from The Leeds United View for sharing an opinion from the home section. Forest would have been hoping to get the win to draw level on points with our beleaguered visitors, and things started well when Morgan Gibbs-White tucked home after five minutes. As is so often the case, we should have got another one, and literally paid the penalty when Neco Williams handled on the line and was dismissed, with Ismaíla Sarr scoring the resulting spot kick. However, in the second half, the ten man team showed no let up with a magnificent battling performance to repel Palace, and still managed to break with numbers, but both teams had to settle for a point in the end. Rich and Baz report on the game, the tactics, the substitutions, and yes, the referee. After the worst game possible last week, Forest went some way to making up to the fans with a goal-fest and clean sheet against Hungarian opposition. Last week's chief antagonist (and there were many) became Forest's chief protagonist as the skipper made two first half goals, contributed to the penalty award at the death, and turned into prime Zidane for about 20 minutes. The headlines went to Igor Jesus for his two goals, and James McAtee and Dan Ndoye had their best games in a red shirt, with the former richly deserving the goal that he scored when Morgan Gibbs-White gave him the opportunity from 12 yards. Rich and Baz report. Oh, what a night. Welcome to YATESY'S ESPRESSO BAR, your weekly roundup of all things Forest from your friends at 1865. In the last week, our usually inspirational skipper caused a fair bit of consternation with his interview after the Braga match - was this delusional or the result of media training? We hear from Matt Turpin with the latest on the Forest Women's team, in the week where Charlie Wellings scored a rather odd goal, and the Reds welcomed two new signings; and we discuss Nick Randall's latest Q&A and Jean-Philippe Mateta with guest pundit Steve Burns. Two strikers, two goals scored, one clean sheet and three points for the Reds. After Thursday's awful game in Portugal, Forest have quietly managed seven points out of the last nine as things tighten up towards the foot of the Premier League. After having no strikers in Braga, Forest had one score 12 minutes after the start, and another 12 minutes from the end, and what goals they were, with sub Awoniyi's particularly reminiscent of a Forest striker of yesteryear. After the Wrexham match, the loyal and long-suffering travelling Reds fans must have been thinking "at least it cannot get much worse than this'. Well, last night, Nottingham Forest missed a penalty, scored an own goal and got a red card, to LOSE TO A TEAM WHO DIDN'T HAVE A SHOT ON TARGET. Baz speaks to George, who was drying off in his hotel room after Storm Ingrid battered the Estádio Municipal, to reflect on a night with no strikers, no urgency, more poor performances from fringe players, and a startling lack of self-awareness. As far as the headline writers were concerned, the big story was the penalty shout for Arsenal, for an apparent handball by Ola Aina. However, for Reds fans, there will be hope that Forest have rediscovered some of the grit and work ethic that was sorely missing for much of the preceding few weeks. Baz is joined by guest pundit Steve Burns to talk about the action, and yes, discuss the penalty shout, contrasted with an opinion from a Gooner. As much as we didn't want to have to talk about this one, here is our match report on a dismal result, after which even the Head Coach went public and berated his players after a spineless first half display in which most of Forest's reserves showed exactly why they aren't in the first team - fans can forgive a bad game, but never a lack of effort. In the end, subs Gibbs-White, Williams and Hudson-Odoi dragged the Reds back into it, with the winger's second goal being particularly tasty, but I don't think anyone would begrudge Wrexham their Hollywood ending in this match. The most important thing is that the record books will show that this was a win for Nottingham Forest. West Ham fans felt aggrieved at referee Tony Harrington and VAR Neil Davies, but Sky Sports and BBC experts alike agree that both controversial moments were correctly awarded, even if they were technical decisions. If Crysencio Summerville's second half effort had stood, then Forest would have been in deep trouble at 2-0 down. Instead, the wind was knocked out of the Hammers' sails and the Reds were galvanised, to equalise, and then when Morgan Gibbs-White withstood the pressure to convert a penalty in the last minute of the 90. Steven Toplis is joined by Tom Newton to discuss the result, refereeing and the team's performance, and what it means for Sean Dyche just over halfway through the season. James Jones joins us from Sports Social stablemates We Are West Ham, with a rant about the ref and despair about the Hammers' prospects. Another defeat for the Reds, making it four in a row and a very Unhappy New Year for Sean Dyche and his men. The first half was a war of attrition, with Forest absorbing Villa pressure, until the inevitable momentary lapse of concentration saw Ollie Watkins' powerful 20 yarder hit the back of the net. Almost straight after half-time, John McGinn scored to end the contest, and although Morgan Gibbs-White pulled one back on the break, just minutes later, Forest threw it away. If John Victor got the benefit of the doubt for the first goal, then there was nowhere to hide for the third as he came racing into no-man's land, and McGinn slotted into an empty net. The Maradona of the Midlands is joined by a despondent and angry George Edwards to conduct a post-mortem, with a view from the home fans provided by Neil of our Sports Social stablemates "For The Love of Paul McGrath". Forest ended the year with a disappointing and flat performance against Everton, just a few weeks after putting in a disappointing and flat performance against Everton. The visitors let Forest have the lion's share of possession, but the Reds were often outmuscled and struggled to penetrate the Toffees' rearguard, despite getting around the full-backs and playing plenty of crosses. With three defeats in a row and tough fixtures to come, we review this game but also ask questions about whether recent optimism was misplaced, and whether Forest really are in a relegation battle. It was a hard-fought match, and one that many Forest fans (and the Forest manager) felt was overshadowed by the performance of referee Rob Jones - rather than playing against ten men, the Reds were up against 12 of them. The match was lively, but most of the action was in the second half, which started when Rúben Días somehow escaped a second booking for bringing down Igor Jesus. City took full advantage of that reprieve through Tijani Reijnders, before a fine counter-attacking equaliser finished off by Omari Hutchinson. The winning goal came late on, as the officials waved away various episodes of wrestling in the box, one of which prevented Morgan Gibbs-White from blocking Rayan Cherki's effort. Despite the victory, you could see that the visitors had put everything into this one, and several players from both teams fell to the ground at full-time. In this report, Rich and Baz embark on an unexpectedly ranty diatribe against the injustice of it all. We'll be back with a tribute to John Robertson very soon, and a report when Everton come to visit on Tuesday - I think - does anyone actually know what day it is? Who scored against Brighton last season? Which potato-based snack has more points than Wolves? All this and more, as Quizmaster Tom grills Rich, Steven, Baz and the Maradona of the Midlands. It was an underwhelming night at Craven Cottage, to put it mildly. Both teams were poor, and chances were few and far between, despite Fulham attempting to score after less than 15 seconds. The Reds never got going and only had Murillo's 30 yarder as an effort on goal. In the meantime, Anthony Taylor proved why he is one of the most well-known refs in Premier League history. Rich is joined by Tom to discuss a bad night at the office, and Sam Dymond joins us from Fulham Focus for a view from the home end. We'll be back on Christmas Eve with Part 2 of our FESTIVE TERRORISTS show, featuring our Forest Festive Quiz. Welcome to 1865, and our FESTIVE TERRORISTS show! This is our monthly game show which also offers a deep dive and reflection into the life of a supporter at Nottingham Forest. There is also a quickfire round asking for thoughts on the best player, and best head coach, of 2025, and more thoughts on the possible City Ground developments. Woof. Part 2 of FESTIVE TERRORISTS will be in your feed on Christmas Eve. In the meantime, we will bring you a match report following the men's visit to Craven Cottage on Monday, and an update on the Women's team following their visit to Charlton. Thanks for listening. This week's visit to Yatesy's Espresso Bar splits into two: Rich is joined by our Women's team correspondent Matt Turpin to review last weekend's FA Cup victory over Wolves - it was a bit squeakier than we would like but Carly employed proper game management tactics to see us over the line and into the next round. Then friend of the podcast Steve Burns joins us to review the progress of the men's team since Sean Dyche took over. If not for the Australian, the Reds would be comfortably in the top half of the table, and Steve shares his thoughts on why it works so well under the gruff-voiced growler. We'll be back before the Fulham match with a Festive edition of Football Terrorists, with some thoughts on Forest's secret weapons and a Christmas quiz! It was a welcome league win after the disappointing defeat at Everton, as Callum Hudson-Odoi scored twice (one of which he DEFINITELY meant) and Ibrahim Sangaré made the first before scoring an absolute belter for the third goal. In truth, Spurs were lacklustre, but as the match went on, the Reds gained in stature and confidence. The importance of Murillo was underlined in both defence and team shape, and Igor Jesus was once again monumental. Baz and Tom report, with the view from the opposition provided by Alfie Nicholson. It was a topsy-turvy affair in the Netherlands, as Forest, resplendent in their navy third kit, dominated the first 25 mins and then retreated for a nervy end to the first half. A double substitution at the break saw the Reds take the lead through Arnaud Kalimuendo's opportunism, but then they conceded a poor goal from a set-piece. Luckily, Forest were able to introduce Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Jesus, and the Brazilian put away a smart finish only 82 seconds after coming on, after a good pass by MGW to allow Callum Hudson-Odoi to create the chance. Steven Toplis is joined by a tired George Edwards, just a few hours after the match, to share thoughts on a game that could have gone wrong but saw the Reds finish the night in 11th place in the Europa League. In an unexpected development, this podcast includes a lengthy rant by Rich about how people in general, but football fans in particular, use social media! The use of such apps provides the basis for much of our discussion, with thoughts from Katie Campbell and Matt Turpin on the Ola Aina debacle, how discourse has changed between football fans in the modern age, and why fans, players and journalists are simultaneously excited and wary of the dopamine hit that social media can provide. Katie and Matt also provide a much more calm and considered opinion about the Forest Women's team, following the weekend's victory against Sunderland, with praise for all positions from Emily Batty in goal, all the way to Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah upfront. That couldn't have gone much worse, could it? From Nicoló Savona's yellow card after 30 seconds, to conceding from the resulting free kick, all the way through poor team defending for the second and third goals, the Reds were rightly punished for a poor display. Sure, there were a couple of decisions that might have made a marginal difference, with Tarkowski's off-the-ball barge on Ndoye going unpunished, and Reds players and management absolutely adamant that the ball hit the ref on the way to goal number 2, but the performance suggested that we are clutching at straws. George Edwards is joined by Katie Campbell for a rant recorded after a long journey back to Nottingham, and the view from the opposition comes from Adam of the Call Of Everton. We'll be back with Yatesy's Espresso Bar in midweek, before another trip to Europe for the game against Utrecht on Thursday. It might not be the last time we use this headline, but Igor Jesus' first Premier League goal was a vital contribution in a game of little quality. The most important thing was to take home the points as Wolves are dire and Forest didn't want to get stranded as teams like Leeds got victories. Baz is joined by Tom to discuss a game in a poor atmosphere, with a mystifyingly long VAR check and little else of note. Dave Azzopardi joins us from the Talking Wolves channel to provide a view from the Molineux. The more eagle-eyed Forest fans will have noticed that Sean Dyche has now surpassed his predecessor's tenure at the City Ground, having completed 40 days in charge. In this special episode of Yatesy's Espresso Bar, Steven Toplis is joined by YouTuber and Reds fan Ray Mundo Futbol, to compare and contrast the gruff man from Kettering with the big Australian. We'll be back later in the week to bring you our reports on Forest's away encounters at Wolves and Everton. It's what we do mate. Forest fans were given a dose of reality after a string of good results, as a goal at the end of each half saw Brighton return to the south coast with all the points. The visitors made a strong start and it was midway through the first period before we saw the Reds gain a foothold, but de Cuyper's late goal saw Brighton lead at half-time. There was no shortage of endeavour from Forest in the second half but also little end product, and Morato's mistake saw Tzimos put the game out of reach. Rich is joined by Tom to talk about the game and what it means ahead of a busy gameweek. We are also joined by Brighton fan Ian Peppiatt with a view from the opposition. A nostalgic night at the WFCG, but also a historic one in its own right as skipper Ryan Yates scored to make him the only player in history to score in the top five divisions of English football, both domestic cups and now the Europa League (and on each day of the week). It was actually fairly routine for the (all) Reds, who despite seven changes were a cut above the Swedish opponents with the noisy fans. Arnaud Kalimuendo will feel much better after scoring a goal, and Jimmy Sinclair made his début. George and Baz report on a night when Yatesy will feel unlucky not to get a hat trick. Some Reds fans may have been confident of getting a result, but I don't think anyone saw that coming. Whatever grumbles that LiVARpool fans may have had about the first goal, they were eclipsed by the injustice of Igor Jesus having an effort chalked off for a non-existent handball that was surely enough to call the ref to the pitchside monitors for a review. Fortunately it didn't matter as Sean Dyche's team put things beyond doubt in the second half; the two full-backs combined as Nicoló Savona hit a striker's finish into the top corner, and supersub Omari Hutchinson forced a save from Alisson, only for Morgan Gibbs-White to decisively stroke home the rebound. George Edwards and Katie Campbell report on their return from Anfield, on a game that saw Arne Slot perplexed, and his skipper Virgil van Dijk take over the role of "sour grapes cheerleader"; luckily we have a magnanimous view from the home end comes from Neil from The Anfield Wrap.
