Hooo there peeps, we got another killer ep coming at you this week! MC Gage figured out how to hook up the audio to the computer so we could interview a real legend - Mike Hutchinson! We talk about Space Gits, how Mike comes up with ideas for games, how he creates interesting mechanics as well as a fair share of goofin' around. On top of that, Steve probes about how to run a kickstarter on the eve of his own Flames of Orion campaign, Terry bugs Mike about movies, music and playing games with kids, and Gage is stoked to hear about Mike's Vampire the Masquerade LARP days. Short one today, punctuated by some longer music clips, including the last(???) track to be released by The Smudge. He kept it going for 25 years and, as he noted in one of our last episodes, he just wants to shut the fuck up and pump gas for a while. Though I did see he's got some other gigs coming up as Cop Corpse or something. I dunno, keep up with his goings on at his Instagram @wjmartmke, unless he's currently threatening to delete it as you read this, in which case wait a few days and he'll be back. The majority of this episode is dedicated to his thesis art exhibit in Milwaukee, opening tomorrow, Friday 3/28/2025. If you're in the area, go check it out. It genuinely sounds like a great and thoughtful experience. More on that at the Peck School of the Arts website. He's listed as, William Justice “Bucko Crooks” Mueller II.He also notes that he'll be playing a bunch of footage we shot in Milwaukee and Fargo last summer. More on that and our corresponding zine, The Arbitrary Art, at my gumroad, which is what this long hyperlink you're currently still reading goes to. Or you can check the trailer first here.We love Bucko, don't we folks? Go check out thesmudge.bandcamp.com for more. Hopefully his retirement is brief and he has hundreds of more albums for us before 2026.And, of course, thank you, New Zealand.

I meant to upload this last week but I was in Australia losing my mind crossing the outback like the narrator of What's Rangoon to You Is Grafton To Me (which no one out there seems to know, let alone have any interest in ABC radio, TISM, Wake in Fright, Ozploitation cinema, that guy that walked around talking to people on the street on TV, or even the morning show I turned on upon arrival at my airbnb that was referring to orange and ham pizza as "Christmas Pizza" before segueing into cockroach milk). So anyway, here it is now.President Crooks continues to go Bucko wild, necessitating at least one well meaning bleep from me and making Jennifer uncomfortable. He talks a bit about the history of noise, the types of noisers, Milwaukee's wild rap scene, and some other bits (Australians and their oppressively close sun got me calling everything "bits" now). Pulled a couple of really old Smudge tracks from Bucko's Bandcamp, at least one dating back to the Galactic Intolerance Records days on archive.org. Check out the rest of what remains of his discography over at http://thesmudge.bandcamp.comAlso, check out the zine/documentary-ish thing we made about his Milwaukee Noise Fest and our trip to Fargo, the Arbitrary Art. Be the first to download or buy a copy at my gumroad http://thearbitraryart.gumroad.com or glance at the unlisted video Bucko put up that I generally pretend does not exist. Or if you're in Philly look for an unmarked DVD in a yellow sleeve that I occasionally drop in Little Free Blockbusters.

Today we have part one of our talk with Milwaukee's iconoclastic POTUS of Noise, Bucko Crooks aka the Smudge aka Billy War Haul and member of too many recording and performing projects to fit within the 4,000 character limit here.Bucko comes out roaring, but he softens up a bit as we go along and Tells Us About His Work™ and how much he loves/hates academia and the liberal establishment. I actually forget what's in this episode vs. the second one, so you'll have to see for yourself. I don't even know what the purpose would be of describing it here. But you can hear more of Bucko's music at his bandcamp. Also, we touch on it very lightly here, but we made a movie together last year. It's part of a larger zine, but you can see the "documentary" on his Milwaukee Noisefest and our trip up to Fargo Noise Fest at my gumroad page. The feature is free/pay what you wish, the whole DVD will cost you a few bucks and will probably take a couple weeks to get to you because I'll be in Australia for the week following me posting this. Also I'm out of copies and need to build more of the whole fry container thing.

When the world gets chaotic and uncertain, we need spiritual practice more than ever—not just to sustain our souls and restore our inner peace, but to recharge and prepare ourselves to take on challenges with effective action. A few years ago, Philip Goldberg, the author of “Spiritual Practice in Crazy Times” and host of the Spirit Matters podcast. interviewed twelve spiritual leaders to help us get through the pandemic. How can we stay open to, and perhaps even become curious about, our rough edges? Today we delve further into the themes of Richard Rohr's book, 'Eager to Love,' focusing on the integration of the negative and the spirituality of imperfection. We're joined by very special guests Adam Bucko and Kaira Jewel Lingo, who share personal stories of their encounters with St. Francis and discuss the value of suffering, the Bodhisattva path, and the importance of accepting one's imperfections as a means to spiritual growth. Both share stories about the importance of feedback within community settings, as well as the integration of external practices with internal spiritual journeys. The conversation concludes with practical advice on how to approach life's challenges with joy and acceptance, noting that we're all on the road together, and everything belongs. Kaira Jewel Lingo is a Dharma teacher with a lifelong interest in spirituality and social justice. Her work continues the Engaged Buddhism developed by Thich Nhat Hanh, and she draws inspiration from her parents' lives of service and her dad's work with Martin Luther King, Jr. After living as an ordained nun for 15 years in Thich Nhat Hanh's monastic community, Kaira Jewel now teaches internationally in the Zen lineage and the Vipassana tradition, as well as in secular mindfulness, at the intersection of racial, climate and social justice with a focus on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and activists, as well as artists, educators, families, and youth. Based in New York, she offers spiritual mentoring to groups and is author of We Were Made for These Times: Ten Lessons in Moving through Change, Loss and Disruption and co-author of Healing Our Way Home: Black Buddhist Teachings on Ancestors, Joy and Liberation. Adam Bucko is an Episcopal priest, teacher of contemplative spirituality, spiritual director, and activist. Born and raised in Poland under a totalitarian regime, his early exposure to spiritual activism deeply shaped his life's orientation. A committed voice in the renewal of Christian contemplation and new monasticism, he authored Let Your Heartbreak Be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation and co-authored Occupy Spirituality: A Radical Vision for a New Generation and The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living. Currently, he directs The Center for Spiritual Imagination in New York, dedicated to democratizing monastic spirituality and teaching contemplative prayer in response to the cries of the poor and the earth. He also serves as a priest at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, New York.  Together, Kaira and Adam lead The Beloved Community for Engaged Spirituality, inspired by the social vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thich Nhat Hanh, and the Buddhist-Christian teachings of Engaged Contemplation.   Hosted by CAC Staff: Mike Petrow, and Paul Swanson Resources: A PDF of the transcript for this episode can be found here. Over one-third of the world's food is lost or wasted, undermining efforts to end hunger and malnutrition while contributing 8 to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In low- and middle-income countries, over 40 percent of food loss occurs before a crop even makes it to market, whether due to inadequate storage, pests or microbes, spoilage, spillage in transport or otherwise. Eliminating food loss and waste (FLW) would provide enough food to feed two billion people, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing FLW is critical to global food security, nutrition and climate change mitigation, with food rescue playing an important role in these efforts. In order to raise awareness, exchange information and share success stories, USAID's Food Loss and Waste Community of Practice created the USAID Kitchen Sink Food Loss and Waste Podcast. Our goal is to share monthly, bite-sized episodes that highlight the approaches USAID and the U.S. government are taking to address FLW. We hope these episodes provide a valuable resource for those interested in why we should care about FLW and how we can reduce it. Our latest episode is with Marie Bucko, National Chair of the 2024 Feds Feed Families Campaign, which collected over 12 million pounds of food donations in order to tackle food insecurity and nourish our neighbors. Feds Feed Families helps food pantries and food banks stay stocked during the summer months when they traditionally see a decrease in donations and an increase in need. By promoting volunteerism and collaboration among US Government employees, Feds Feed Families aims to raise awareness of hunger and combat food insecurity. Together, Marie and Nika, who served as the Deputy National Chair, reflect on the success of the 2024 campaign and share how to get involved in opportunities to glean excess food to reduce food loss and waste while increasing access to safe, nutritious food. You can subscribe to receive the latest episodes of USAID's Kitchen Sink and listen to our episodes on the platform of your choice: Apple, Spotify, and more! Video recordings of the episodes are available on YouTube. Check in every month for new episodes as global experts discuss a range of issues about FLW and methane emissions - from the critical role of youth to the staggering economic costs - and learn about specific ways that USAID is tackling FLW around the world. If you have an idea for an episode topic you'd like to see featured or if you would like to participate in an episode of USAID's Kitchen Sink, please reach out to Nika Larian (nlarian@usaid.gov).There's no time to waste!

Stay in touch and sign up for Paco's weekly email newsletter, The Nerdletter.  In this episode of Weird Finance, host Paco de Leon, along with Stephanie Bucko and Cristina Livadary from Mana Financial Life Design (@manafld), dive into the essentials of thinking like a financial planner. They discuss targeting clients with growth mindsets, particularly those in helping professions and the sandwich generation. Stephanie explains the trade-offs for business owners aiming to keep taxes low versus paying more into Social Security and retirement plans. Christina shares insights on mastering personal finance and emphasizes the importance of understanding financial numbers.  Cristina is a Certified Financial Planner® and Registered Life Planner®. Before Mana, she led sales and consulting efforts as a Regional Director with Russell Investments, where she consulted for and worked with over 10,000 financial advisors. After years of experience in the industry she grew dissatisfied with the wide disparities in knowledge, empathy, and skill within the advisor population. Cristina is a Bucknell University graduate, with a BA in Political Science and Spanish. She launched Mana with Stephanie in 2018 based on the belief that even greater success can be achieved by solving issues holistically - with individuals and their families. Since founding Mana, Cristina has been recognized for her accomplishments within the industry by leading organizations such as Investment News' 40 under 40 in 2020 and Investopedia's Top 100 Advisors in 2023. Cristina is living her own life plan, working in her dream career as a business owner and a financial life planner who does everything in her power to positively impact the lives of her clients. When she's not hard at work, you can find Cristina in the great outdoors. She is passionate about surfing and adventuring around the world with her family and friends. Stephanie is a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst®. She graduated from Bucknell University with a BSBA in Accounting. Following her undergraduate education, she audited hedge funds in New York City with PricewaterhouseCoopers during the 2008 financial crisis, and then joined Man Group, the world's largest publicly traded hedge fund. At Man Group she served as a risk manager for six years, handling $15 billion in hedge funds. After years of serving banks, pensions and endowments, Stephanie became interested in bringing institutional quality services to a broader population. In 2018, Stephanie launched Mana with Cristina out of the realization that investment management is only a small piece of the services that individuals truly need in a financial advisor. Since founding Mana, Stephanie has been recognized for her accomplishments within the industry by leading organizations such as Investopedia's Top 100 Advisors of 2023. She is also a regular contributor to MyStockOptions.com, the financial advice industry's premier site for equity compensation. When Stephanie isn't educating herself on the markets or building complex spreadsheets, you can find her outside. Her favorite days are spent on the ski slopes, riding horses, and bird watching. Myk was born in Queens, New York, and moved with his family to Southern California just before Neil Armstrong did his "One Giant Leap for Mankind" bit.   Somewhat of a musical prodigy, he earned a music scholarship at the age of ten for a private school in Northridge, California, where he learned the majority of his musical instruments and vocal training.  As a singer, Myk has performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, as well as an instrumentalist and singer for an A&E documentary on the Titanic. Myk was Associate Conductor for the New Valley Symphony Orchestra, the San Fernando Valley Master Chorale, and co-creator of the Celtic international music group, Sheer Pandemonium.   Currently, Myk is the Board of Directors President and performer for the Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra, based in Mar Vista, and as of 2022, has been performing across the country as a professional Santa Claus. As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs on your heart-strings and/or I hope you laugh. Music by Prymary: Sean Entrikin (my hot husband) on guitar, Chris Quirarte on drums, Smiley Sean on keyboards, Rob Young on bass, and Jaxon Duane on vocals Connect with Myk: https://linktr.ee/blacksantamyk Where can you find me?  Father Adam Bucko in conversation with RLC'S Mary Grace Puszka to discuss “Let Your Heartbreak Be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation” (Orbis Books, 2022). Written against the backdrop of the pandemic and America's reckoning with growing poverty, injustice and systemic racism, this book is uniquely positioned to accompany us through the disillusionment and violence of trying times. It offers reflections, stories, and insights from Adam Bucko's years of prayer and activism, including in the streets with homeless and LGBTQ youth, in new monastic communities across the world, and as an Episcopal priest in an engaged contemplative community. Indeed, Father Adam Bucko has been a committed voice in the movement for the renewal of Christian Contemplative Spirituality and the growing New Monastic movement. He has taught engaged contemplative spirituality in Europe and the United States and has authored “Let Your Heartbreak be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation” and co-authored “Occupy Spirituality: A Radical Vision for a New Generation” and “The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living.” Committed to an integration of contemplation and just practice, he cofounded an award-winning non-profit, the Reciprocity Foundation, where he spent 15 years working with homeless youth living on the streets of New York City, providing spiritual care, developing programs to end youth homelessness, and articulating a vision for spiritual mentoring in a post-religious world. He currently serves as a director of The Center for Spiritual Imagination at the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, New York, and is a member of “The Community of the Incarnation,” a ‘new monastic' community dedicated to democratizing the gifts of monastic spirituality and teaching contemplative spirituality, in the context of hearing and responding to the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth. Join Swami Padmanabha and Father Adam Bucko, a contemplative author, Episcopal priest, founder of the Reciprocity Foundation and The Center for Spiritual Imagination, and committed voice in the movement for renewal of Christian Contemplative Spirituality and the growing New Monastic movement, come together to share their experiences of Radical Activism. Quote From Radical Personalism that opens the discussion:“In connection to the above point, social action and involvement should be encouraged in the Gaudiya community for those so inclined, and they should be properly educated by the elders as to how to engage in compassionate social action. We call this Radical Activism…'A spirituality that is only private and self-absorbed, one devoid of an authentic political and social consciousness, does little to halt the suicidal juggernaut of history. On the other hand, an activism that is not purified by profound spiritual and psychological self-awareness and rooted in divine truth, wisdom, and compassion, will only perpetuate the problem it is trying to solve, however righteous its intentions.'* Properly executed and complemented, every action can become prayer and every prayer can become action that influences the world in ways beyond our imagination.”* (Andrew Harvey) Adam shares what Radical Personalism is to him: that each and every one of us should respond to the cry of the world - whether that is people struggling with housing insecurities or people who are being oppressed—that we need to respond in a personal way and not wait for institutions. It also points to the Ultimate Reality, a reality that personally loves us. As discussed in Adam's latest book, Let Your Heartbreak Be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation, he brings to question WHAT HAS FOLLOWING OUR BLISS resulted in? Instead FOLLOW OUR HEARTBREAK. Continuing to go deeper into this, they discuss the profound relationship between joy and suffering; not the kind of joy that encourages us to avoid life, but the kind of joy that can face the difficulties and the suffering and still survive. Allowing the pain of others to touch of deeply (this was also spoken about during Ilia Delio and Swami Padmanabha's conversation of Ilia's podcast, Hunger for Wholeness), gives the space for the spirit of god to flow thru us and leads us into a life of compassionate service. Approaching people in need as if they are a project to be solved was not working for Adam. He realized that he needed to show up for people as he shows up in prayer. Being receptive and breaking with people, accompanying them through their suffering reveals the healing presence. Both Adam and Swami share how their traditions speak of praying as not limited to one act, but that every action can be prayer. Action not just RELATED to contemplation, but action AS contemplation. The paradox of Individuation in Service: on one hand, the goal is to find your purpose and mission in life and on the other hand, becoming an empty vessel in which God can live. It is our conception of ourselves, even our specialness, that has to die and in the process we discover the most of ourselves we have ever been. Swami asks Adam to share his experience in transitioning from monastic life to married life for him and his wife, who was a Buddhist nun for 15 years. Adam shares his profound response about love, vows, and reflecting god's unconditional acceptance. and much much more… ▶ WATCH ON FACEBOOK ▶ WATCH ON YOUTUBE ▶ PURCHASE RADICAL PERSONALISM: Revival Manifesto for Proactive Devotion in hardcover, paperback, and/or Kindle formats on Amazon ▶ WRITE your REVIEW of RADICAL PERSONALISM ▶ CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION: Gaudiya Reform Forum on Facebook. ▶ FOR MORE INFO: SwamiPadmanabha.com
