Dr. Daniel Hale Williams is often described as the first person to successfully perform an open-heart surgery. That's not entirely accurate, but he was still a surgical innovator, and he was also a huge part of the Black Hospital Movement. Research: "Daniel Hale Williams." This story really tugs at your heart!
On this day in 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams made history as a pioneering open-heart surgeon. Williams began his medical journey as an apprentice under the esteemed surgeon Dr. Henry Palmer, which paved the way for his admission to the prestigious Chicago Medical School at Northwestern University. After earning his M.D. in 1883, Williams became one of the few Black physicians in Chicago. Motivated by the plight of a Black woman who was denied entry to nursing school due to her race, Williams co-founded the Provident Hospital and Nursing Training School. On July 9, 1893, he performed the first open-heart surgery, demonstrating his exceptional medical intuition and surgical prowess. That night, James Cornish arrived at Provident Hospital with a deep stab wound near his heart, setting the stage for Williams' groundbreaking achievement. Learn more about your ad choices. Today we're all saddened to hear that Daniel Ellsberg had died. Ellsberg's life is well-known, and he's one of the more important figures in the history of American dissent and radicalism. In February 2003, Green and Red co-host Bob Buzzanco was really lucky, and honored, to host Dan Ellsberg in Houston, where he talked about the Vietnam War, nuclear weapons, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the coming war against Iraq, and he finished by talking about his case and the need for whistleblowers in government. And so, as we remember Dan Ellsberg's magisterial contribution to the causes we care about, here are his words from 2003. Daniel Ellsberg, Presente . . . ———————— About Daniel Ellsberg// Daniel Ellsberg was a Marine in the 1950s, took a Ph.D. at Harvard, and then joined the RAND corporation as an analyst. In 1964, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara brought in Ellsberg as an advisor and he was assigned to study pacification in Vietnam along with the legendary General Edward Lansdale. Ellsberg concluded that the war was not going well and would continue to deteriorate with the possibility of a victory for the northern, Communist forces quite possible. In 1967, McNamara included Ellsberg in a group he had created to do a comprehensive study of the entire history of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, a role that would lead him to become one of the more dangerous men in that era, according to US government officials. After completing the study (in which Ellsberg didn't have a huge role) he returned back to the RAND Corporation and became immersed in antiwar work. By 1971, with the war still going on despite significant public opposition, Ellsberg made copies of the 7000-page report, known as "The Pentagon Papers," and leaked it to the media. The Nixon administration immediately acted and charged Ellsberg with espionage, conspiracy and other crimes. The White House also tried to prevent publication of the Pentagon Papers but the Supreme Court upheld the right of the press to publish them. By the time Ellsberg went to trial, Nixon's attempts to discredit and ruin Ellsberg--including illegal wiretapping of Ellsberg, a government break-in of his psychiatrist's office to steal his files, and an offer to the trial Judge to become director of the FBI if he found Ellsberg guilty--were so egregious that the judge threw the charges against him out. From then on, Daniel Ellsberg was a constant presence when Americans protested against wars, nuclear power and nuclear weapons, wars and interventions, and many other issues. His legacy as a defender of press freedom and a voice for peace and justice won't be forgotten, and we've seen his influence on the likes of Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning, Daniel Hale, Reality Winner, and others who've tried to warn us about the malignant actions of the state. --------------------------- Outro- "The Ballad of Daniel Ellsberg" by Rulie Garcia Links// + Daniel Ellsberg, Who Leaked the Pentagon Papers, Is Dead at 92 (https://nyti.ms/3Nx0EEe) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +G&R's Website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. A conversation with Becky Yates and Rev. Paul Craig from Matthews United Methodist Church, on how they are responding to mental health in the church through the ministry of "For Minds and Hearts." Take a listen to how they are equipping communities through education, resources and developing mental health toolboxes in the local church context. May is Mental Health Awareness month. On May 7, 2023 Matthews UMC is presenting "Depression: Out of the Darkness and Into the Light" featuring Dr. Daniel Hale, psychologist at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Hale will share personal and professional insights on the intersection of the faith community and mental health. Dr. Hale and his colleagues have developed a program called the Congregational Depression Awareness Program for utilization by faith communities. Dr. Hale will speak at the 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., services followed by a free lunch (registration required) and another presentation by Dr. Hale. Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 21% of Americans (52.6 million people) experienced a mental illness in 2020; however, less than half of them received treatment. A 2022 CDC report showed that 37% of high school students reported experiencing poor mental health, 44.2% reported feelings of sadness and hopelessness, and 19.9% reported seriously considering suicide. Mental Health America's research shows that North Carolina ranks 39th in access to mental health care. [00:30] Election ‘Day' in Arizona Enters Day Three (7 minutes) Maricopa County is somehow still not finished counting votes from the Arizona Republican primary. What is going on? [7:55] The Investigation Is the Cover-up (12 minutes) The Justice Department has subpoenaed White House Counsel Pat Cipollone as part of its investigation into the January 6 “insurrection” and “efforts to overturn the 2020 election.” In reality, the investigation into the “insurrection” is meant to cover up the real insurrection: the 2020 election steal. [20:20] Salon's Truth Bomb (12 minutes) Left-wing Salon published an article titled “When Whistleblowers Go to Prison, We're on the Road to Tyranny.” The article describes the case of Daniel Hale, who is serving a 45-month sentence in a maximum-security prison for blowing the whistle on Barack Obama's drone strikes. The Obama White House routinely used the Espionage Act to treat whistleblowers like spies. This is why James Risen called the Obama administration “the biggest threat to freedom of the press in a generation.” [32:00] Orwellian Doublespeak (5 minutes) Guy Reffitt, the first January 6 protester to stand trial, has received a seven-year sentence for “threats of violence” and entering restricted grounds—another example of America's lopsidedly biased administration of justice. [37:00] Will Garland's DOJ Prosecute Donald Trump? (9 minutes) Earlier this week, American Spectator noted that the White House would love to arrest and prosecute Donald Trump because he gets in the way of their fundamental transformation of America. If this happens, however, it would tear the country apart. The Bible does prophesy of another civil war in the United States, and we must be spiritually sobered and emotionally prepared for what is coming. [46:25] E-Mail Feedback (9 minutes)

Real Estate News Brief - Week Ending April 16, 2022;Inflation Hits 40-Year-High, Double-Digit Rent Growth, Rising Cost for New HomesIn this Real Estate News Brief for the week ending April 16th, 2022... the latest surge in consumer prices, where rents are growing the fastest, and the high cost of building new homes.Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review.Economic NewsWe begin with economic news from this past week, and another alarming report on inflation. The consumer price index jumped 1.2% last month to a 40-year high of 8.5%. The increase was mostly driven by higher prices for gas, food, and housing. If you eliminate gas and food you get a core rate of 6.5%. Some economists believe that inflation will ease up soon, when the price of oil stabilizes and some of the supply chain issues clear up. But other economists worry that we might continue to see prices going higher. (1)Wholesale prices are also surging. The producer price index was up 1.4% in March to an annual rate of 11.2%. That's the highest it's been in almost 40 years and likely a sign of continued inflation. Economist Kurt Rankin of PNC Financial Services says: “Producer prices are an early warning sign of what households can expect in terms of consumer price inflation.” (2)There was a slight rise in new jobless claims, but that's off a 54-year low just last week. The Labor Department reported an 18,000 increase in applications, to a total of 185,000. Meanwhile, the number of continuing claims went down 48,000 to a total of 1.48 million. (3)Mortgage RatesMortgage rates hit the 5% mark for the first time in more than 10 years. Freddie Mac says the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was up 28 basis points to exactly 5%. The 15-year was up 26 points to 4.17%. High home prices combined with higher mortgage rates are making it a lot harder for many Americans to become homeowners. (4)In other news making headlines…Rents Hit Double-Digits in Many AreasRents are also moving higher in step with home prices. Many landlords are playing catch-up with rent levels after the pandemic. Realtor.com says that average rents are up almost 20% since 2020. The research covered March of 2020 to March of this year. (5)Among the areas with the fastest rent growth are Miami; Riverside County, California; and Tampa, Florida. Orlando and Jacksonville are also both in the top 10 for rent growth.Realtor.com economist Daniel Hale says that rents are creating affordability issues for some renters. She also says there are signs that rent growth is slowing down but it's hard to predict if the trend will continue. She says: “The jury is still out on whether rent growth will hit single digits by the end of 2022.”Property Taxes Heading HigherHome values appear to be rising much faster than property tax, which suggests that tax assessors have some catching up to do. ATTOM Data Solutions says the average property tax on single-family homes rose 1.8% nationwide last year. That's the slowest pace of tax growth in five years. (6)ATTOM's Rick Sharga says it's surprising that property taxes have gone up more because home values are up 16% for last year. That likely means that homeowners can expect to see higher tax bills as homes are reassessed. Some areas have already increased property taxes. In Nashville, Tennessee, they went up an average of 27% last year. Milwaukee homeowners are paying about 18% more on property taxes. Baltimore and Grand Rapids, Michigan, are third and fourth for the highest recent tax increases. Surprisingly, tax rates actually went down in some areas including Houston, Dallas, and Austin, Texas.Prices Keep Rising for Building MaterialsThe cost of building a new home keeps going up, although lumber prices just came down a little. The National Association of Home Builders says building material prices have gone up 20.4% year-over-year and 33% from the beginning of the pandemic. (7)Additional costs have added 31% to the cost of a new home. Realtor.com reports the average sales price of a new home was $511,000 in February. Insider attributes the drop in lumber prices to improvements in the supply chain and a softening of demand for lumber. It says lumber prices have fallen 39% from a March high and are now 52% lower than they were in May of last year. That's when they peaked at $1,733 per one thousand board feet. That's it for today. Is US Drone Warfare an Illegal & Immoral Extension of a Bellicose US Foreign Policy that Demands Ethical Accountability? Our guest Nick Mottern is a Vietnam veteran and has worked as a reporter, researcher, writer, and political organizer over the last 30 years. He manages a website devoted to education and organizing to stop drone warfare and surveillance www.KnowDrones.com. He was director of the 2012 national ‘Know Drones Tour' and was an organizer of the 2013 April Days of Action and 2014 Spring Days of Action, and he publishes “The Drone Organizers Bulletin”. He provides stunning revelations & concerns. Our show focus includes the immorality of drone warfare, the psychological trauma associated with drone operators, and the US public that is so abstracted from the realities of the victims and communities worldwide that are subject to such attacks. The Afghan War our guest argues would have been over a long time ago if it had not been for drones. The prosecution and inhumane conditions now facing Daniel Hale who despite the presiding judge recommendation resulted in him being sent to a supermax Marion prison. The prison conditions he faces is not commensurate with his ‘crime'. Daniel Hale is a whistleblower who did not put at risk US national security by releasing ‘confidential' papers. He revealed to the US public: 1. for the first time the “kill chain,” the bureaucratic process by which targets are selected to be summarily executed. 2. information that helped to expose the existence of the secret programs & that drone strikes killed many more innocent people than their supposed “targets”, & 3. that US citizens have been killed extrajudicially by drone strikes in violation of their constitutional rights to a trial. The reason Hale cited for pleading guilty is because the Espionage Act charges prevent a public interest defense. In other words, Hale's lawyers were barred from arguing that the need of the public to be made aware of the criminal activities of the US government was more important than his obligation not to disclose classified information to anyone. Essentially Hale was forced to plead guilty in order to avoid potentially spending decades in federal prison. Whistleblowers are gagged from explaining their actions. Defense attorneys are barred from uttering the words “whistleblower” or “First Amendment” within earshot of the jury. Since all that matters for sustaining a conviction is that a defendant gave classified information to someone not entitled to receive it, that's all the jury is allowed to hear. The result is often absolutely no accountability of US foreign policy crimes against humanity. Pgatos pgatos00@gmail.com 10/25/2021
Today we turn to Philip Agee, ex-CIA Case Officer from 1957 to 1969. After a series of short extraordinary excerpts from interviews with Philip Agee, featured in the classic documentary history of the CIA entitled “On Company Business," David Giglio goes in-depth with Louis Wolf and Chris Agee discussing Phil and the history of CovertAction Magazine. Philip Agee was stationed in various parts of Latin America including Ecuador, Uruguay and Mexico throughout the 1960s. As one of the first ex-CIA whistleblowers to go public in 1975, Agee not only exposed the covert activities of the U.S. government but provided the critical analysis including political economy to contextualize the mechanics of U.S. imperialism. In addition to writing his tell-all book in 1975 entitled CIA Diary: Inside the Company, where he named all the actual names and operations, Agee started CovertAction Magazine (originally named CovertAction Information Bulletin) in 1978 with Louis Wolf, William Schaap, Ellen Ray, James and Elsie Wilcott, William Kunstler, and Michael Ratner. The Magazine was created in order to carry on the work of the preceding publication called CounterSpy, which had been shut down as a result of CIA harassment. Over the years, contributors to the Magazine have included critics of U.S. foreign policy such as Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Michael Parenti, Philip Wheaton, Sean Gervasi and Christopher Hitchens. By the printing of the second issue, eleven bookstores promoted the stapled newsletter. And by issue #3, the official library of the CIA had actually sent in its subscription request which was then posted on the cover. You can read these and all the back issues in the archives of CovertActionMagazine.com. The publication became of interest to Congress in 1982 with the passage of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, which made the practice of revealing the names of undercover officers illegal under U.S. law—even if derived from public unclassified sources. Over the years, the magazine worked with and supported whistleblowers like John Stockwell, Ralph McGehee, David MacMichael, Jennifer Harbrury, Ambassador/Colonel Ann Wright, Christopher Simpson, and Wayne Madsen, publishing hundreds of articles on CIA covert operations and intelligence-related disclosures including undercover NSA and FBI operations in the U.S. and around the world. When you think of the more recent whistleblowers including Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, John Kiriakou, Jeffrey Sterling, and Daniel Hale, we are talking about a long history of whistleblowers going back to Philip Agee, Daniel Ellsberg, Anthony Russo and more… As covered in earlier episodes, CAM played a important role in the making of Oliver Stone's JFK in the early 1990s. Ellen Ray and Bill Schaap encouraged, edited and published Jim Garrison's book entitled “On the Trail of the Assassins.” They then handed it to Oliver Stone in an elevator at the Havana Film Festival in the late 80s and he was quickly convinced to make the film.In 1992, with issue #43, the magazine was renamed as CovertAction Quarterly and won awards from organizations including Project Censored for stories like "Phi Beta Capitalism", about corporate influence on universities. CovertAction Quarterly ceased publication of its print magazine in 2005 with issue #78, and later relaunched online as CovertAction Magazine in 2018. Numerous articles from CovertAction Quarterly were collected in two anthologies, CovertAction: The Roots of Terrorism and Bioterror: Manufacturing Wars The American Way, both by Ellen Ray and Bill Schaap and published by Ocean Press in 2003. Agee and Louis Wolf also published Dirty Work: The CIA in W

The U.S. is ending its 20-year war in Afghanistan and conventional wisdom now holds that it was largely a failure and a waste of more than $2.5 trillion and countless lives. In 2010, Wikileaks published a massive trove of classified documents that exposed the American government's lies about the war. It was a colossal brief against the war state, but instead of thanking Assange for his service to the truth, he remains imprisoned in London, fighting extradition and prosecution in the U.S. Kelley and Dan talk to journalist and Shadowproof managing editor Kevin Gosztola about the current state of the case against Julian and the press freedoms at stake as the government is determined to make him an example. We also talk about the role of whistleblowers during the post-9/11 wars, as well as the crisis surrounding the current withdrawal of Afghanistan. There has never been a more dangerous time to be a whistleblower. Western governments are working in concert to enact legislation that conceals their wrongdoing. Ten days ago, during sentencing, drone whistleblower Daniel Hale said, “I am here because I stole something that was never mine to take – precious human life.” Hale was sentenced to 45 months in prison. He joins a growing list that includes Jeffrey Sterling. Mr Sterling, a former CIA agent who was sentenced to 42 months in prison under the Espionage Act, joins Ross Ashcroft on Renegade Inc to tell his story…
“Enemies of the State” looks at the strange case of Matt DeHart, a member of the hacktivist group Anonymous who was prosecuted for child pornography. He claimed the charges were a cover up to seize his computers containing government secrets. Director Sonia Kennebeck and producer Ines Hoffman Kanna spent years trying to untangle the knotty mysteries of his case. Their previous film National Bird (2016) won the Ridenhour Documentary Film Prize for its profile of three people who worked on the U.S. military's drone program and became whistle blowers. One of the film's subjects Daniel Hale was recently convicted under the Espionage Act. Sonia discusses his case recently covered in The Washington Post. Pure Nonfiction host Thom Powers interviews Sonia about both films.Enemies of the State is now available on VOD from IFC Films.Warning: this episode reveals details from “Enemies of the State” that might be considered spoilers if you haven't seen the film.On Twitter: @soniakennebeck @c_odebreaker @thompowers @PureNonfiction
Mary Dudziak, the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law at Emory University and co-editor of Making the Forever War: Marilyn B. Young on the Culture and Politics of American Militarism, joins Dan and Kelley this week to talk about the late historian Marilyn Young and her decades-long research into the pathologies of American war-making. We zero in on the popular support for wars, the integration of romantic mythology, and the country’s inability to learn the lessons from each previous conflict. In the first segment, Dan and Kelley talk about the growing national security bureaucracy under Biden, whistleblower Daniel Hale, Israeli nukes, and the troop shell game in Iraq.Read More Mary Dudziak here.
