Read transcriptAbout This Episode: Kathleen Welch is a playwright, composer, director, and actor, and one of the founding members of The Spindle Collective; the Toronto-based company making some of the most compelling horror theatre in Canada right now. She joined Phil to talk about Siofra, Spindle Collective's latest show, which opens at the Red Sandcastle Theatre on June 17th. Rooted in the Irish mythology of changeling babies, Siofra is the second in a trilogy of folklore-inspired horror plays that Kathleen has written with Spindle Collective co-founder Natalia Bushnik. The conversation moves through the rich terrain of folklore and what makes it such fertile ground for original storytelling — from Romanian demons to Germanic winter witches, and now to the west of Ireland in the 1860s. Kathleen talks about the collaborative writing process she and Natalia developed during COVID, why writing with a trusted partner makes all the difference, and how Siofra surprised even its own creators when the humor started emerging in rehearsal. Kathleen also talks about the Dead of Winter Festival, the horror theatre festival she and Natalia launched in partnership with Eldritch Theatre, why genre theatre is a powerful way to bring new audiences into the room, and what she believes makes horror such a naturally feminist form of storytelling. This episode explores: The mythology of Irish changeling babies and how it shapes the story of Siofra How The Spindle Collective was born during COVID from a shared love of folklore and horror The Dead of Winter Festival: what they learned in year one, including surviving a polar vortex Why horror is uniquely suited to feminist storytelling and bringing new audiences to theatre And much more! Picture this—It's 1,000 years into the future, and Earth is a dying world. The ocean itself has become The Caul, a predator that lures in and devours anyone that goes near it. Humanity has fled the planet, and few people dare to return. Mae Jameson is an octogenarian former Service agent who arrived on Earth 30 years ago to find her lover. When she encounters Siofra, a mute girl, wandering alone by the shore and returns home, they discover the girl's father, rogue scientist Carl Magellan, hanging from a noose. Unwilling to leave the matter in the hands of the facility Carl abandoned years ago, Mae takes Carl's journals—which detail his obsession with the Caul and its mysteries—and sets about investigating. That's the story of “Exo,” the debut sci-fi novel by Colin Brush, out on Nov. 18. In this episode, Colin talks about what the Caul is and what inspired its creation. He and I discuss protagonist Mae Jameson and the quest before her, and the role tat Siofra plays in the book. We go into his lengthy background in literature and how that helped, and look at the possibility of a second book.

Having experienced a very traumatic childhood of mental, physical, and sexual abuse she says she is no longer a victim or a survivor but a warrior! She has been helping others with spellwork, healing, and paranormal investigations for many years and now shares her knowledge on her YouTube Channel "Siofra's Magic Alcove" which is a treasure trove of magical experiences and practical solutions, as well as a place for people to feel at home. This episode is also on YouTube so you can see Siofra's wands and staff! https://youtu.be/6RF1jZE_IoEYou can find Siofra's videos at https://www.youtube.com/@siofrasmagicalcove7293She also has a Patreon group https://www.patreon.com/user?u=44713153and an Etsy Shop with her beautiful creations https://www.etsy.com/shop/SiofrasMagicAlcove........................Follow Wendy on IG: @light.alwayswinsWatch LAW Youtube videos @lightalwayswins33I am now offering Akashic Readings.
