This episode, we tackle a story that has been in the bottom quartile in both DWM's Mighty 200 and 50th Anniversary polls – it's Four to Doomsday! But, what will the Watchers think? This one goes probably as well as you'd expect… Join us as we discuss how this story is built like a Hartnell story, Adric turning into an incel, what the guts of the androids are made from, how Monarch is the most affable fascist dictator ever (even being reminiscent of Stephen Fry!), and Julie shows her ignorance of Greek city states (for shame!). Additionally, Diana confesses her immense disgust of the term “flesh time!” If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Back in N-Space, we find ourselves in the very odd (but apparently extremely harmonious) society of Traken, ruled over by an apparently all-powerful Keeper in The Keeper of Traken! All is not as it seems, as an old, kinda crispy enemy lurks in the background, ready to steal all of our bodies in his quest to keep living… Join us as we discuss the clear influences of Shakespeare, how the Trakenites were able to procure weapons so quickly, the rampant use of ring tropes, how Adric calls the Doctor out on his nonsense, the issues with Trakenite architecture not being load-bearing, and the interesting story parallels between The Keeper of Traken and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Introduction God the Creator (v1-4). Heaven and Earth are Full of His Glory (v5-30). The Waters and the Dry Land (v5-13). Plants for Food (v14-18). Sun, Moon and Stars (v19-23). All Creatures Great and Small (v24-32). God the Redeemer (v33-35). Conclusion Things to keep in mind about Creation: This is our Father's world – Creation is essentially good. Life is meant to be enjoyed (under God). Don't confuse the Creator and Creation. Don't worship created things. Sin is real, but God has set a limit to it. This world is not beyond redemption. Look to Jesus as our Redeemer. Be a good steward of creation (read Ecclesiastes!)

In this episode of the Greta Eskridge podcast, I get to talk to the queen of books herself, Sarah Mackenzie. Sarah is a wife and a homeschooling mom to six kids. Three are in college and 3 are still at home. In her spare time (ha!) she is also the creator of the fabulous Read Aloud Revival podcast, the author of two beloved books, Teaching From Rest and The Read Aloud Family, the founder of the boutique publishing house Waxwing Books and author of three children's books. This is why I say she had a reading empire! Sarah is an amazing lady and just so much fun to talk to. True to form, I get teary eyed in this episode. But talking books and connection will do that to me. Also, in this episode you can hear Sarah and I not able to do math. We talk about books, not math problems, so what do you expect? This episode is chock full of so many great book titles with you. We like to say we sling around book titles like ninjas. Get ready! Here's some more of what we talked about: Sarah tells us she loves roller coasters. She recently rode one 6 times in a row and read her kindle while in line. This quote by Andrew Pudewa launched Sarah deep into the world of reading aloud with her kids: the best way to help kids become better communicators is to read aloud a ton and memorize poetry. Sarah noticed that reading aloud didn't just make a positive impact on her kids academically, but there was a relational impact happening too. She noticed as her kids were growing up and sometimes she and they were at odds with each other, reading aloud put her and her kids on the same side of the fence. Sarah says: reading aloud is a powerful way to connect with our kids in a really noisy world. Its simple, free, quick: that's a lot of dividends from a small investment. We learn that audio books count every bit as much as reading a book with pages. And we learn that data says whether they read early or late, by 8th grade most kids are at about the same reading level if kids are being exposed to good books all along. No need to fear if you have a late reader! I've had 3 myself. And here is the list of all the books we discussed together. Each one is linked so you can see the cover and even put it in your cart if you want to! For the younger kids: Buffalo Fluffalo Jonas Hanway's Scurrilous, Scandalous, Shockingly, Sensational Umbrella Sheep in a Jeep Morris the Moose Goes to School For the middle grades: Umbrella Mouse Note: there is some mild language in this book and the ones below. Sarah and I both feel that mild curse words said in a British accent don't feel troubling to us, but handle it as you wish. All Creatures Great and Small (children's version and beloved by my kids) All Creatures Great and Small (book for middle grades and up) All Creatures Great and Small (show) Adventures with Waffles Astrid the Unstoppable Pipi Longstocking Chronicles of Narnia (a must have for every library) Tuesdays at the Castle Vanderbeekers Penderwicks For the teens: Glitch Screwtape Letters Surprised by Joy Find out more about book clubs for kids and grownups in Greta's book: Adventuring Together Sarah tells us she is chasing joy by playing a new board game with her family called : Seven Wonders You can find all of Sarah's endeavors in the links at the top of these show notes. You'll want to follow her and glean all the book goodness she has to share! Don't forget to like and subscribe to this podcast, and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a review of the podcast on iTunes. Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. Thank you for listening and being part of my team. I love you guys! Greta

Valentine's Day comes and goes every year and it's easy to either dismiss it as a commercialized event or to get swept up in the sentimentality depending on one's disposition, but we wanted to avoid both extremes and try to focus on true, genuine love. And we do, buuuut take quite an enjoyable detour on to topics of art, commerce, comic books, and more! We are joined by artist, curator, and author Ned Bustard. Ned is a longtime artist and printmaker who has been on a run the last few years with children's books at IVP. His book on Saint Nicholas launched IVP Kids two years ago and last year he came out with one on Saint Patrick (a favorite in the Marinello house) and now we have Saint Valentine. As you may know, every year I offer two episode replays over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. These are always two of my favorite interviews from the year—conversations that stuck with me and are worth a second listen (though, in honesty, they're all worth a second listen!). This year, Thanksgiving in the US falls on November 23, 2023—60 years to the day since the premiere of Doctor Who. What could be more fitting, then, than to revisit my conversation with Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor and brought us one of the most beloved Doctor Who anniversary specials of all time ten years ago? I hope you enjoy the episode! *** I'm absolutely thrilled to be talking this week with actor Peter Davison, star of All Creatures Great and Small, Doctor Who, At Home with the Braithwaites, West End musicals like Spamalot and Gypsy, and much more. He's also the author of a delightful memoir, Is There Life Outside the Box: An Actor Despairs, and Doctor Who fans also know him as the creator of the 50th anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Peter talks with me about many of those things, plus how he came to write his book, the "rise of the nerds," and more. Episode breakdown: 00:01:10 Childhood creativity, music, becoming an actor. 00:10:08 Taking on Doctor Who, and being unsure how to approach the character. 00:17:03 Doctor Who, and playing unpleasant characters well. 00:24:54 All Creatures Great and Small and the lessons learned from Robert Hardy. 00:35:18 Actors fear of being replaced, and the difference between US and UK actors. 00:42:13 Acting as the best job. 00:50:28 Writing his memoir. 00:55:34 The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. 01:03:07 Doctor Who fandom and the "rise of the nerd." Please leave a review and in it, tell us your favorite Doctor Who experience or memory. Want more? Here are some handy playlists with all my previous interviews with guests in theatre and Doctor Who. This bonus episode was recorded live at the Global Bird Fair, and is a conversation with the Actor, Director, RSPB Ambassador and Trainspotter-turned-Birder, Samuel West. Samuel talks about his recent experiences shooting the Channel 5/PBS Masterpiece remake of “All Creatures Great and Small” in the Yorkshire Dales; how the rural connection to nature and community helped him and many of its viewers through the pressure of the COVID lockdowns, and how the production team had to wrestle with some unique anachronistic wildlife - Swifts appearing in the June-shot Christmas special, Collared Doves appearing in a drama set in 1940 (despite not reaching Yorkshire until 1958), and extinct Red Kites obsessed with photobombing! Samuel's love of birds began upon a visit to his grandfather in Kenya, has taken him to film “Death in Paradise” in no small part because of the endemic Guadalupian avifauna on set, and helped him with the pressures of running the Sheffield Crucible Theatre. To Sam, nature is key to contentment: “No matter how nice the person is you might be in bed with, it's worth getting up and getting out at first light, some of the time…” As an RSPB Ambassador, he takes particular relish in raising a placard board; speaking out against environmental concerns such as the construction of the Nuclear Plant, Sizewell C; but also believes British Wildlife easily competes with the impressive sights of the African savannah having seen 4,500 waders take to the air in one bound at RSPB Snettisham.
