In this episode I'm chatting to Rochelle about her second birth which took place just 2 weeks before recording! Her pregnancy differed in so many ways from her last; she suffered with terrible morning sickness for the first 5 months, had the added worry of a subchorionic haematoma and found at 20 weeks that her baby had a ventricular septal defect. Despite all the extra tests and complications, Rochelle was able to go ahead with the homebirth she hoped for and - after what she describes as an extreme dress rehearsal the day before - she birth her daughter in the water at home with her membranes still intact. Sheree takes us through her first pregnancy, her choice to have a termination for medical reasons (TFMR) at 20 weeks and the grief that followed. She admits that she has always been in denial when discovering that she's pregnant, a response that's actually quite common for so many women who experience more overwhelm and doubt than they do immediate joy. She opted for private obstetric care, educated herself and was intent on avoiding the cascade of intervention. Her second birth was incredibly positive, so much so that when she was preparing for her third, she doubted whether it could be as empowering. She decided to go right back to the beginning and embraced all the birth education to better understand labour and get herself in a strong and stable mindset. How do we move through the discomforts of pregnancy and birth? This comes up in today's interview with Melanie Meador. Melanie shares her journey with both of her home birth experiences.  Melanie had hyperemesis gravidarum with both pregnancies (extreme and persistent nausea during pregnancy, often with frequent vomiting).  With her first birth experience, she was feeling a little rushed going into the process, because her midwifery practice was going to close 3 days after her due date. Plus she was working full-time. The birth lasted 34 hours with her waters broken. This is a stark contrast from her second birth, 6 hours and baby was born en caul (waters still intact).  Melanie is the only person in her group of friends to have had a home birth. And with her mother and almost all of her aunts having cesarean births, this was something unique. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Fiona Fiona is an actor and a mama of two from the UK. Today we will hear about how she had her daughter at home in a birth pool as her son slept upstairs. It was calm, beautiful and even pleasurable!  Her baby girl was born en caul, which is when the amniotic sac is intact and has been believed throughout the ages to be a sign of luck, and her daughter also had a true knot in her umbilical cord. Something that is feared but most of the time totally fine.  She had a doula and an NHS midwife as well as her husband with her.  This birth was the complete opposite to when she had her son in the height of covid, where they threatened her with induction and where she ended up having loads of interventions like forceps and an episiotomy, even though she'd wanted as natural a birth as possible.
