Please join us as we discuss the long term impact of childhood sexual abuse, institutional coverups and the unwillingness of "bystanders" to take a stand.
If you know - or are the parent or caregiver of a young woman - and you want to help expose them to a world of opportunities, then tune in to hear our latest conversation with one of the top representatives from the Girl Scouts of Connecticut. They've got a free and fun educational event coming up soon in New Haven, so we'll tell you all about it, and why 2025 might be the year to consider getting a young person you know involved with the Girl Scouts of CT. Then - in a special extended segment - we'll be turning to the difficult subject or childhood abuse by previewing an upcoming session of Newtown Talks - an engaging and enlightening series at Edmond Town Hall. On January 16, actor and survivor Anthony Edwards, and author Steven Mills will be on stage discussing this topic - and we'll bring you a preview of that event by welcoming them both to help break down the paralyzing stigmas around reaching out for help.

Trigger Warning: This episode contains descriptions of child sexual abuse. Listener discretion advised. We continue our important conversation with Stephen Mills, author of the memoir “Chosen”, which recounts in excruciating detail the sexual abuse he endured as a child at the hands of a beloved camp director of a prestigious Jewish summer camp. Stephen describes the dissociation he experienced as he tried to cope with what was happening to him. Perhaps even more shocking than the descriptions of the abuse, is Stephen's recounting of his enormous effort to bring this offender to justice, after realizing that this man had potentially abused hundreds of young boys across several states. Stephen's story involves the FBI, and numerous law enforcement departments in New York, Connecticut, Illinois and Pennsylvania….you will not believe this journey for justice. The latest One News/Kantar political poll released last night suggests National and ACT could govern together if support remains the same during the next election. Labour and National were down two percentage points each in the poll, but the ACT Party has done rather well, up four percentage points on its last showing. Political commentators Liam Hehir and Stephen Mills spoke to Guyon Espiner.
Special Guest: Stephen Mills, author of CHOSEN: a memoir of stolen boyhood. "I was sexually assaulted by a highly respected member of the community. My boyhood experience is all too common. The only unusual part is that I decided to write a book about it." —Stephen Mills At thirteen years old, Stephen Mills is chosen for special attention by the director of his Jewish summer camp, a charismatic social worker intent on becoming his friend. Stephen, whose father died when he was four, places his trust in this authority figure, who first grooms and then molests him for two years. Stephen tells no one, but the aftershocks rip through his adult life, as intense as his denial: self-loathing, drug abuse, petty crime, and horrific nightmares, all made worse by the discovery that his abuser is moving from camp to camp, state to state, molesting other boys. Only physical and mental collapse bring Stephen to confront the truth of his boyhood and begin the painful process of recovery—as well as a decades-long crusade to stop a serial predator, find justice, and hold to account those who failed the children in their care. The trauma of sexual abuse is shared by one out of every six men, yet very few have broken their silence. Unflinching and compulsively readable, CHOSEN eloquently speaks for those countless others and their families. It is a rare act of consummate courage and generosity—the indelible story of a man who faces his torment and his tormentor and, in the process, is made whole. Childhood abuse comes in many forms, but sexual abuse is perhaps the most heinous, and it's sadly very common. One out of ten children experience sexual abuse and some numbers suggest it may be as high as one in six for young boys. Yet there is very little written about this, particularly when it comes to men. Stephen Mills has written a detailed and moving story of his experiences. In his case, it was a trusted adult and community leader who groomed and abused him. Stephen's story will resonate with thousands of others. And his path to healing offers possibilities for all of us. #BumpInTheRoad

Today's episode is a conversation with author and survivor Stephen Mills about his recently published memoir, Chosen. For those who haven't yet read his book, which we highly recommend, it recounts Mills' abuse at the hands of a camp counselor over several years, and his long journey towards healing. While many institutional abuse cases involve boys, there are very, very few published accounts of male survivorship. And, if we're to help boys who have been abused, then it's critical for us to understand how this experience may differ from that of female survivorship. Mills' account is deeply moving, and it challenges all of us to better protect boys in the first place, and better help them heal if they have been abused.Topics in this episode:Why we need this story (1:17)Stigma and shame (3:42)Grooming family and community (6:50)Longing for justice (17:34)Pushing institutions to change (26:17)Public policy wishes (29:45)Advice for child abuse professionals (34:39)Learn signs and tactics (41:46)For more information (47:01)Links:Stephen Mills is the coauthor with Roger Fouts of Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees. How is it that democracies can only make big, politically difficult changes when faced with an emergency? We did it last year with Covid-19 – so could we do it again with the climate emergency that is in our faces right now? Bob Hawke was the 23rd prime minister of Australia and the most electorally successful Labor politician in Australian history. He delivered a speech on 9th June 1989, five days after the tanks and 27th Army rolled into Tienanmen Square and massacred students gathered there. Hawke delivered this speech in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra, which was largely written by speechwriter Stephen Mills who is our guest for this episode. In the middle of the prepared remarks, Hawke also read from a diplomatic cable that contained graphic descriptions of what went on in the Square. He wept as he read from the cable, and it became one of the iconic moments of his prime ministership. It's recently been revealed in an ABC podcast, China if You're Listening, hosted by Matt Bevan that the contents of the cable was not accurate in terms of the scale of atrocities or the number of deaths in the square.
