Dawn switches topics to the disappointing revelation of some Epstein files by Attorney General Pam Bondi, noting how she expected more in the case than what's been made public. This leads her to welcome in attorney Jennifer Freeman, Chair of CHILD USA representing multiple victims of Jeffrey Epstein, who's unhappy with the continued stonewalling of the FBI as she and her clients seek answers and justice. Freeman tells Maria Farmer's story, noting her role as an 'art scout' for the infamous individual, and explains what she hopes to see from AG PamBondi's release.

Christa Brown is a self-described Baptist clergy sex abuse survivor. But she's so much more. Christa has devoted years of her life to shining a light on the widespread systemic problem of clergy sex abuse and church coverups in what she calls "Baptistland". That's the title of her new book, which was released earlier this week. Christa also wrote "This Little Light", and I had the honor of speaking with her so that we could let more people find ways to make their churches safer physically, emotionally, and spiritually. "According to Child USA, a leading think tank for the rights of children, fifty-two is the average age of a person bringing forward a report of childhood sexual abuse. I was fifty-one. The mental hurdles are huge. Many child sex abuse victims wait until after the perpetrator has died, and many never disclose their childhood abuse. Many never even recognize that what they experienced was abuse." - Christa Brown Highlights from this episode include: Exploding the myth that "that doesn't happen in MY church" Why churches should not try to handle child sexual abuse issues "in-house" Should forgiveness always lead to restoration Visit my website to access more episodes. Trigger Warning: This episode contains descriptions of child sexual abuse. Listener discretion advised. We continue our important conversation with Stephen Mills, author of the memoir “Chosen”, which recounts in excruciating detail the sexual abuse he endured as a child at the hands of a beloved camp director of a prestigious Jewish summer camp. Stephen describes the dissociation he experienced as he tried to cope with what was happening to him. Perhaps even more shocking than the descriptions of the abuse, is Stephen's recounting of his enormous effort to bring this offender to justice, after realizing that this man had potentially abused hundreds of young boys across several states. Stephen's story involves the FBI, and numerous law enforcement departments in New York, Connecticut, Illinois and Pennsylvania….you will not believe this journey for justice. Over the past five years, sexual abuse scandals in sports have continuously been in the news. Whether swimming, tae kwon do, or most famously gymnastics, the variety of sports that have had such scandals point to a very uncomfortable truth that sports has inherent child protection issues, and that these unique vulnerabilities require unique prevention strategies to keep youth athletes safe. Courtney Kiehl, former elite gymnast, abuse survivor, and now an attorney and advocate for child victims and adult survivors of child sexual abuse, joined us to discuss what makes youth athletes so vulnerable, and how we can help. What coaching strategies create toxic cultures, which discourage kids from speaking up about concerns? How does the lack of accountability at the club level allow offenders to move location and keep right on coaching? How does the weight of adult expectations—coaches, parents, and, yes, us, the viewers—make it so very difficult for kids to disclose even the most harrowing abuse? And where is there reason for hope and action to create a future for elite sport, and indeed all sport, that is healthy and safe? Today's episode is a conversation with author and survivor Stephen Mills about his recently published memoir, Chosen. For those who haven't yet read his book, which we highly recommend, it recounts Mills' abuse at the hands of a camp counselor over several years, and his long journey towards healing. While many institutional abuse cases involve boys, there are very, very few published accounts of male survivorship. And, if we're to help boys who have been abused, then it's critical for us to understand how this experience may differ from that of female survivorship. Mills' account is deeply moving, and it challenges all of us to better protect boys in the first place, and better help them heal if they have been abused.Topics in this episode:Why we need this story (1:17)Stigma and shame (3:42)Grooming family and community (6:50)Longing for justice (17:34)Pushing institutions to change (26:17)Public policy wishes (29:45)Advice for child abuse professionals (34:39)Learn signs and tactics (41:46)For more information (47:01)Links:Stephen Mills is the coauthor with Roger Fouts of Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees. Stephen, whose father died when he was four, places his trust in this authority figure, who first grooms and then molests him for two years. Stephen tells no one, but the aftershocks rip through his adult life, as intense as his denial: self-loathing, drug abuse, petty crime, and horrific nightmares, all made worse by the discovery that his abuser is moving from camp to camp, state to state, molesting other boys. Only physical and mental collapse bring Stephen to confront the truth of his boyhood and begin the painful process of recovery--as well as a decades-long crusade to stop a serial predator, find justice, and hold to account those who failed the children in their care. The trauma of sexual abuse is shared by one out of every six men, yet very few have broken their silence. Unflinching and compulsively readable, CHOSEN eloquently speaks for those countless others and their families. It is a rare act of consummate courage and generosity--the indelible story of a man who faces his torment and his tormentor and, in the process, is made whole.

In recent years, how we look at the Olympics and elite sports has begun to change—driven by cases like that of Larry Nassar, the team doctor who for years and years got away with sexually assaulting and sexually abusing girls and young women. Across the U.S., state legislators are implementing new laws to allow survivors of abuse additional time to file lawsuits against abusive authority figures. Unfortunately, the Pennsylvania legislature failed to pass laws extending that state's statute of limitations. In the end, survivors, in Pennsylvania, do not have adequate protection to process abuse and hold perpetrators accountable. On this episode, Alice Bohn, Legal Director at CHILD USA, joins the show to discuss the shortfalls and obstacles survivors will face in Pennsylvania. Ms. Bohn is a graduate of Pepperdine University School of Law, where she oversaw initiatives to prevent child sexual abuse. Before law school, Alice worked in New Delhi, India with International Justice Mission on a national campaign to end bonded labor. Sharing is a Good Thing!!! Tracey sits down with her relative Amelia Thorpe. Amelia is a wife, mother to three daughters, educator, advocate for social justice, childhood sexual abuse survivor and blog author. https://ameliathorpe.blog/Amelia Thorpe, with a profound sense of inner strength, unveils in this episode, her tortuous experience as a mother in this harrowing story of one family's journey to justice following the years of sexual abuse all three of her and her husband Brad's daughters survived in a home day care.Amelia writes:My husband and I have been blessed with three magnificent daughters. For the first ten years of our parenting life, we thought we were nailing it. Our children were polite, respectful, creative, active and well-adjusted. What we didn't know was that they were hiding a deep secret from us, one that would irrevocably change our lives forever. In 2013, my husband and I uncovered the extent of the lie that we had been living for an indeterminate period of our lives as parents. A man whom we trusted had been performing sexual acts on our children for a number of years…and we had no idea. Over the years since, we have tried to create a “new normal” for our family. This “new normal” still consists of work, school and of course being a taxi driver for after school activities. But, it also includes incontinence, nightmares, visits to the police station and court house, weekly counseling sessions, and suicide attempts. It's been a persistent effort to keep upbeat, when at times everything just feels broken. Our “journey to justice” was long and arduous. The trial nearly broke our already broken children. We have a system where everyone is made to be accountable; their character and professionalism questioned; except for the accused. Four weeks and three days after we began in court, the defendant was found guilty. He was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months. Our children are doing life. Whilst life, at times, has been difficult for us to navigate as a family, I do know that my girls will grow up to be strong, resilient and beautiful women. They will continue to feel a sense of solidarity with other survivors who, like them, have given a voice to the voiceless and said no to abuse. I am not happy to let an antiquated legal system continue to perpetuate abuse on the most vulnerable. But trying to affect change has not been easy. I am excited to be part of Open Stance in an effort to highlight the truth, celebrate survivors and remove the shame that has for too long been part of the narrative of abuse survivors. Lots of love, Amelia
Tonight's special guest is John-Michael Lander from Kettering, Ohio, who grew up in a poor family in a small farm community in Ohio. "My parents were barely living from paycheck to paycheck, feeding and raising six children," John-Michael says. "Springboard/platform diving was an expensive sport" he goes on. "When I was fifteen years old, I took eight in the Junior Olympics and dreamed about the Olympics when a lawyer presented my mother an offer she could not refuse. Through the lawyer, I was introduced to my coaches, the medical team, and sponsors who sexually abused me." Now he speaks out about his experiences. "My life was in shambles, filled with secrets, and confusing. I was filled with such shame and continuously berated and blaming myself as being my fault. I had no one to turn to because when I tried to tell my mom, she slapped me and said that it wasn't nice to make up lies about people." John-Michael is getting the word out in many ways. "I have written the serial ''Surface Series based on my traumatic experience, including 'Surface Tension', 'Cracked Surface', and soon to be published, 'Broken Surface'. I have had the honor to speak at the 2019 and 2020 National Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation Global Summit in Washington, D.C.; on the Discussion panel twice for the Netflix film, 'Athlete A'; provided testimony for CHILD USA's End Game and to Maryland Legislation's Statute of Limitation Policy; and I have spoken in England and Canada. I broke my silence in October 2018 when I shared my story on the TEDxDayton stage."

REFORMING FAMILY COURTS There are too many stories about dangerous and ridiculous custody determinations that occur in America’s family courts. From children who are sent to live with abusers to children who are killed because the courts determine their killer should not be kept from seeing the child—the stories abound. So what are we doing about it? And who is doing it? Meet Danielle Pollack, Ambasador, Child USA, Family Court Reform, author of Kayden’s Law, and tireless worker to change what happens to children in family court, and Marcie Hamilton, CEO of Child USA, attorney, and constitutional law professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Whether drafting and promoting new laws in states, to educating judges, to speaking out about legal and systemic changes that are necessary in courts, Pollack is dedicated to making things safer for kids. Join us as Pollack details cases and potential laws, shares the latest thinking about educating judges and other decision makers, and advocates for protective mothers. In this episode of “Deliver Us,” we’re asking what justice looks like for survivors. What does the church need to do? What models of justice can we look to in this unique crisis? We look at the differences between criminal and financial justice, speaking to experts like Marci Hamilton, the founder and CEO of Child USA. We ask Marci how extending the statutes of limitations could help survivors, and we hear from Cardinal Dolan about what a “victim compensation fund” is. Teri Anulewicz, a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, is a lawmaker who has been grappling with these questions of justice as a Catholic mother. She joins this episode to offer her perspective. Justice, transparency and healing are all connected, and we find that current statutes of limitations can work against all three, especially in cases of child sexual abuse.
For years now, survivors of Catholic clergy sexual abuse have sought accountability at the local level, taking claims to their parish or bishop. But the Roman Catholic Church is a global institution, and experts say its cover-up of child abuse reaches the upper echelons of church leadership. What would it take to go after the Vatican?
