Dave Rubin of "The Rubin Report" talks to Winston Marshall and Sean Spicer about CNN's Abby Phillip getting uncomfortable as Batya Ungar-Sargon calmly debunks the entire "war Crimes" narrative concerning Pete Hegseth's orders regarding a second strike on a Venezuelan drug boat with a series of facts that Democrats would like to continue to ignore; Jesse Watters and Stephen Miller getting a huge laugh as ABC News' host of "This Week" Martha Raddatz reveals new details of the drug boat strike that backs up Pete Hegseth and the Trump administration's version of events; a resurfaced clip of Joe Biden from 1989 that is going viral where he pushed for more aggressive tactics to fight narco terrorists in the war on drugs; Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's pathetic response to getting grilled about his lack of concern of the shocking amount of teenage shootings occurring in the downtown Chicago area; Donald Trump's brutally honest response to being told that Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is proud of the Minnesota Somali community after allegations of massive fraud against the state;a CNN host by New Orleans City Councilwoman Lesli Harris refusing to accept any help from ICE to handle violent criminals who target minors; and much more. Rev. Jesse Jackson is well-known as an icon of the American Civil Rights Movement, a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr., and a steadfast activist — but he has quite a past in electoral politics, too. A Dream Deferred charts Jackson's rise to political prominence during his 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns, as the first major Black candidate for U.S. president. In today's episode, author and CNN anchor Abby Phillip talks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about her debut biography, and how Jackson himself approached politics and activism with separate mindsets. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Dave Rubin of "The Rubin Report" talks about White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stunning the mainstream media and Trump's critics with his plan to not back down on his strikes on Venezuelan drug boats; Marco Rubio issuing a chilling warning to the European Union if it gets in the way of America's attacks on Venezuelan drug boats trafficking illegal drugs into the country; "The View's" Sunny Hostin admitting she knows nothing about international law before accusing Pete Hegseth of war crimes for allegedly saying "kill them all" regarding the survivors of a Venezuelan drug boat strike; Scott Jennings pointing out to CNN's Abby Phillip that her math doesn't prove her point that Americans are against Trump's mass deportations and ICE raids; Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders looking clueless for supporting the Starbucks Workers United strike while seemingly unaware of Starbucks launching fully automated stores with barista robots; Elon Musk sharing the real secret to building wealth and success and it's not what you think; and much more. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader, activist, raconteur, and political candidate, finally gets a book worthy of his stature courtesy of CNN anchor Abby Phillip. Focusing on his presidential runs in 1984 and, especially, 1988, Phillip highlights how Jackson built an unlikely coalition that showed how Black political power could be consolidated. His experience working under Martin Luther King; his organizing the SLCC's Operation Breadbasket in Chicago and beyond; and his roots in the deep South combined into two astonishingly impactful presidential campaigns. Appealing to the working people of urban enclaves like that of Chicago, young people on college campuses, and Black people across the South, he created the modern Democratic coalition-one that has been used by all major Democrats seeking national success from With her expert reporting, natural storytelling skills, and a story so full of humanity, politics, and hope, Abby Phillip has written a rousing popular history that sheds new light on an American icon."Jesse Jackson's presidential campaigns showed America that leadership could look different, that power could be shared, and that more voices deserved to be heard," said Phillip. "His movement laid the foundation for the coalitions that define our democracy today. This book is my effort to capture the urgency, the messiness, and the possibility of that era, and what it still has to teach us now." At a time when questions of representation, democracy, and belonging are once again at the forefront of American life, A Dream Deferred offers urgent lessons from a leader who pioneered modern coalition politics. The battles Jesse Jackson fought in the 1980s, over voter access, multiracial coalition-building, and the visibility of Black political leadership, mirror the very debates shaping our politics today. By revisiting Jackson's story, Phillip not only restores him to his rightful place in history, but also reminds us that the struggles of the past are inseparable from the challenges of the present.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Mike Pesca is joined by CNN anchor and author Abby Phillip to discuss her new book, A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power. They explore Jackson's soaring, sermon-like rhetorical style and the hubris of the "tree shaker, not a jelly maker" philosophy. The conversation traces how Jackson's push to change delegate rules made the path possible for Barack Obama, even as the Obama campaign intentionally created contrast with Jackson's image. We dive into Jackson's unique brand of populism—more Bernie Sanders than Obama—and his surprising, Trumpian anti-globalist instincts regarding Japan and Germany. Plus, we discuss how his rhetorical style, while rousing, could also be exhausting, and why the most heartbreaking part of the world's chaos is the people who are okay with it. Dan Driscoll made history earlier this year when, at 38, he was sworn in as the youngest Army secretary in U.S. history. And he just made news again this week when he became the highest-level Trump administration official to visit Kyiv for the White House's secret peace talks in effort to end Russia's war on Ukraine. Driscoll joined high-level talks with Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as news broke about a potential peace deal on the horizon. Driscoll is a veteran of the Iraq War, and as a result, has felt the effects of Pentagon decisions firsthand. He's set out to reshape the U.S. Army and the Pentagon into an agile institution that can make better use of existing resources and channel the best practices of the private sector. “When you are creating defensive and offensive solutions, you have to think even 10 years out when the war really gets to its most catastrophic moment, ‘What are the very basic tools of warfare that can't be impacted by the enemy,” Driscoll said. In this week's episode of The Conversation, Driscoll sits down with POLITICO's Dasha Burns to delve into the future of warfare, his plans for reinvigorating the Army's technology and the innovation spurred by conflict. “I think the best guess is if the United States entered a conflict with a peer in a couple of years, it would be a hybrid war where nearly every human being on the battlefield would be empowered and enabled with a digital tool,” Driscoll said. “I think we believe every infantryman in the United States Army will carry a drone with them into battle.” CNN "NewsNight" host Abby Phillip also joined Dasha to chat about her new book, “A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power,” Jackson's influence on today's political landscape and Phillip's approach to her own roundtable show.

In this incisive episode of Backstage Pass with Gentry Thomas, CNN anchor Abby Phillip joins us to discuss her powerful new book, A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power. Dive deep into the extraordinary story of civil‑rights leader Jesse Jackson, his historic presidential campaigns in the 1980s, and how his vision reshaped American politics. Buy the book here: A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power Abby and Gentry explore how Jackson’s strategies—and his underrated influence—mirror present‑day dynamics with figures across the political spectrum. They analyze how extremists and politicians alike believe they’re right in their missions, and why understanding that truth is critical. The conversation also tackles one of the most critical issues of our time: evolving diplomacy between the U.S., Israel and Palestine, and the high‑stakes role debate and the free press still play in democracy. Abby reflects on her role at CNN, the responsibility of journalism in today’s polarized climate, and how the integrity of the story matters now more than ever. Tune in for an in‑depth, thought‑provoking discussion on power, politics, race, and media—only on Backstage Pass with Gentry Thomas.

From the jump, the administration has been all about the memes, owning the libs, and pissing people off. But Abby says she wants Trump's supporters to have a chance to share their points of view on her show—and be challenged in real time. Meanwhile, during the weirdest shutdown ever, Republicans are at risk on SNAP and Obamacare subsidies. And policing the Caribbean and the Pacific to commit summary executions is not America First. Plus, the roots of Bernie Sanders's populist campaigns were planted by Jesse Jackson's runs for the presidency in ‘84 and ‘88. But Trump too also echoes Jackson as a political figure—through their use of celebrity, personality, and similar outsider populist messaging. Israel has President Trump to thank for getting their people back. They couldn't do this on their own. While I hold out little hope for Hamas in becoming civilized, this is the best-case scenario for it to potentially happen. The only man who could even get this deal going is President Trump. Recently even CNN's Abby Phillip noted that Barack Obama issued a statement about the peace deal in Iran, yet didn't thank President Trump. Democrats hate President Trump because he shows the dichotomy between effective leadership and Democrats.
