Henry Beam Piper was born in 1904 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was largely self-educated. He developed a fascination with history as a boy—several of his ancestors had fought in the Civil War—and by his teens he had decided he wanted to become a writer. Around that time he discovered speculative fiction through H. G. Wells, Bram Stoker, Edgar Rice Burroughs and A. Merritt. At 18, Piper went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, where he worked as a laborer and later a night watchman while writing and submitting stories in his spare time. Remarkably, he spent about 26 years trying to make his first sale before John W. Campbell bought “Time and Time Again,” which appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1947. His deep knowledge of history became one of the signatures of his fiction, particularly in his Paratime stories and alternate-history tales like “Crossroads of Destiny.” Piper went on to write more than two dozen short stories and roughly a dozen novels and book-length works, depending on how collaborations and posthumously published books are counted. His best-known books include Little Fuzzy, Space Viking, Four-Day Planet and The Cosmic Computer. Little Fuzzy was nominated for the 1963 Hugo Award for Best Novel. Writer Jerry Pournelle recalled that Piper once told him, apparently with a straight face, that he believed he had been born in another timeline. Kendell Foster Crossen was born in 1910, in Albany, Ohio, the only child of farmers Sam and Clo Crossen. He attended Rio Grande College in Ohio on a football scholarship, was an amateur boxer, and before becoming a professional writer held a variety of jobs, including carnival barker and working as an insurance investigator. And today Kendell Foster Crossen makes his debut on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Crossen knew crime fiction from the inside. He moved to New York in 1935 and became editor of Detective Fiction Weekly in 1936. He later created the Green Lama and, writing as M. E. Chaber, created insurance investigator and occasional intelligence operative Milo March. Crossen was also one of the founders of the Mystery Writers of America. Interestingly, Crossen was already an established professional writer before he ever tried science fiction. His first two published science fiction stories appeared in February 1951, one in Amazing Stories and the other in Thrilling Wonder Stories. He soon became a familiar name in Thrilling Wonder Stories and Startling Stories. Crossen later said that he started writing science fiction because it gave him the opportunity to write satire and a certain kind of humor that was difficult to sell elsewhere. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Winston Marks was a Wisconsin-born science fiction writer who became remarkably prolific in the 1950s, publishing nearly 60 stories in just a few years. Before making his living as a writer, Marks claimed an extraordinary assortment of jobs—including aircraft pilot, soldier, sailor, bellhop, advertising man, electronics technician, political campaign manager, linoleum layer, and sugar loader—which probably gave him plenty of material for his often humorous, slightly offbeat fiction. Don Hartley has stumbled upon an invention that could make him fabulously wealthy—and give anyone who controls it the power to watch anyone, anywhere. Before he cashes in, he must decide whether some discoveries are simply too dangerous to share. The Vidiot by Ib Melchior. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Another day, another author making his debut on the podcast. Ib Melchior was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1917. His father was a celebrated opera singer who performed throughout Europe and the Americas from the 1920s through the 1940s, including appearances with the Chicago Opera, San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Near the end of his career, he also appeared in character roles in MGM musicals. Ib spoke six languages, and his fascination with movies began when he was only 11 years old. He saw the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs, featuring Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, whose striking appearance later helped inspire the visual creation of the Joker. Melchior walked away from the movie knowing exactly what he wanted to do—direct films. In the late 1950s, Melchior met producer Sidney W. Pink, who told him he could direct a movie if he wrote the screenplay. There was just one problem: Melchior had never written a screenplay. But he wanted to direct, so he wrote one, and the result was The Angry Red Planet. That launched a career in science fiction movies that would last for years. Melchior went on to write and direct science fiction films including Reptilicus, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, and The Time Travelers. He also wrote for television, including an episode of The Outer Limits. Before his movie career took off, Melchior wrote three science fiction short stories. Later, he added two science fiction novels to a remarkably varied career that began with an 11-year-old boy sitting in a movie theater, already dreaming about getting behind the camera. We've featured George O. Smith five times on the podcast, but despite the very similar names, the two writers were not related. George Henry Smith was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1922. I had never heard of him before discovering today's story, which is one of the things I love about digging through old science fiction magazines. There are always authors waiting to be discovered. Smith began publishing science fiction in the early 1950s and went on to write 15 novels and around 40 short stories during a career that stretched from 1953 to 1985. Published in March 1954 in the fourth issue of Universe Science Fiction, a magazine that lasted for only 10 issues from 1953 to 1955, turn to page 118 for The Watchers by George H. Author James Edwin Gunn makes his debut on the podcast today. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1923, Gunn was a science fiction writer, editor, scholar, and anthologist whose remarkable career spanned decades. Gunn wrote about 20 novels and more than 100 short stories. One of his novels, The Immortals, became the basis for the television series The Immortal, starring Christopher George. If you loved the show as much as I did, you might be interested to know that some episodes of The Immortal can be found on YouTube. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to science fiction, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named Gunn its 24th Grand Master in 2007. He was the youngest in a family of eleven children. Barker worked as a Spanish teacher, high school principal, forest ranger, sergeant of the 502nd Engineers in France in World War I, trombone player in Doc Patterson's Cowboy Band, and newspaper correspondent. From 1924 to 1926 he was a member of the New Mexico house of representatives. Although the story you are about to hear is his only science fiction short story he estimated he wrote more than 1,500 short stories and novellas and more than 2,000 poems. His work appeared in pulp magazines and prestigious publications too, including the Saturday Evening Post. Perhaps his best known work was "A Cowboy's Christmas Prayer," which has been printed more than one hundred times, and recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford and Jimmy Dean. It's not sci-fi but we will record it too in a few months and put it on our Facebook page. He won the Western Writers of America Spur Award twice, in 1978 he was the first living author to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of Great Westerners in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. It appears to be Stuart McIver's only published science fiction story. His spacefaring sci-fi, The Stainless Steel Rat and The Misplaced Battleship are two of my favorites. And I enjoy his robot stories too, Arm of the Law, The Robot Who Wanted to Know and others. However, this Harry Harrison story isn't like the others. Perhaps that's because of his co-author Hubert Pritchard. This is the first Pritchard story on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast and there won't be many more, if any. Hubert Pritchard wrote only two science fiction stories that were published. So how did he and Harry Harrison team up? They were friends in high school and reconnected in New York after World War II. As the story goes Pritchard was training to be a doctor but ill health prevented him from continuing his medical education. The more of his work I narrate, the more I appreciate his knack for blending clever ideas, sharp dialogue, and just the right amount of humor into unforgettable science fiction. I'm not going to spoil it but there is humor near the end that goes by fast and it took a few takes to narrate it without laughing. Robert Silverberg is one of our absolute favorites here on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. I'm not even sure how many of his stories we've featured so far, but it's probably getting close to twenty. The really exciting part is that we've identified more than fifty Robert Silverberg stories that are now in the public domain. That means there are plenty more adventures waiting for us, and we won't be running out of Silverberg stories anytime soon. The October 1958 issue of Super-Science Fiction featured three stories by Robert Silverberg, although you wouldn't know it just by looking at the bylines. Two of those stories even made the cover. The Fight with the Gorgon appeared under Silverberg's own name, while The Untouchables was credited to Calvin M. Knox. And today's story, Castaways Of Space, was published under yet another Silverberg pseudonym, Dan Malcolm. Of course, we know who really wrote all three. Another day and another author new to the podcast. Charles Vincent De Vet was born in 1911 in Fayette Michigan, a town that had almost disappeared by then, but had once been a bustling iron smelting town. It would later become a ghost town and in 1959 the State of Michigan bought the townsite and surrounding land and made it a state park. Charles V. De Vet enjoyed a productive run in the 1950s and 1960s, publishing 35 science fiction short stories. He stepped away from the genre for nearly a decade. He eventually returned, adding nine more stories during the 1970s and 1980s. Charles V. The Angry Mammoth is a different experience altogether—an exuberant wilderness adventure filled with impossible claims, towering beasts, and Jack London's unmistakable storytelling. The Angry Mammoth was first published in 1901 and shows a playful side of Jack London that listeners may not expect. London uses the frozen North, where he set many of his best-known stories, as the backdrop for an outrageous campfire tale supported by one very curious piece of evidence. Today's story has one of the most unusual publishing histories we've ever featured. Heroes Die Hard first appeared in the December 1943 issue of Fantastic Adventures magazine—but if you looked at the byline, you wouldn't have seen Leroy Yerxa. Instead, the story was credited to Henry Gade, one of several pseudonyms used by Yerxa during his remarkably productive career. Here's the incredible part. That December 1943 issue contained ten stories… and every single one of them was written by Leroy Yerxa. Some carried his real name, while others appeared under pen names, but the entire issue came from one writer. In all the years we've been exploring vintage science fiction, we've never come across another magazine issue quite like it. Yerxa was one of the most prolific contributors to the Ziff-Davis magazines. His first published story, “Death Rides at Night,” appeared in the August 1942 issue of Amazing Stories when he was just twenty-seven years old. Over the next four years, before his tragic death in 1946 at only thirty years of age, he sold more than seventy stories to Amazing Stories and Fantastic Adventures, many of them under assumed names. Like so many writers from the pulp magazine era, he left no personal history behind. We don't know where he was born, what he did outside of writing, or any details about his life. What we do know is that Farrell published sixteen science fiction short stories between 1943 and 1962, carving out a small but memorable place in vintage science fiction. From Beyond the Stars by Murray Leinster. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. One of the questions we hear quite often is, Why did so many science fiction authors use pen names? There were actually several reasons. Magazine editors usually didn't want a single issue to look as though it had been written by just one person, even if one author had supplied several excellent stories. Writers also sold stories to competing magazines, experimented with different styles, or simply wanted the flexibility of publishing under multiple names. Today's story is a perfect example. If you pick up the June 1947 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories, you'll see that From Beyond the Stars is credited to Will F. Jenkins, one of the many pen names used by William Fitzgerald Jenkins—the author we know today as Murray Leinster. So why didn't he simply use Murray Leinster? Because the same issue already featured another Murray Leinster story, The Boomerang Circuit. Publishing both stories under the same byline would have made it obvious that one writer dominated the magazine. But there's another twist. A third story in that very issue, The Nameless Something, is credited to William Fitzgerald, another variation of his own name. The result? Of the seven stories published in the June 1947 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories, three were written by the same man—William Fitzgerald Jenkins. By using three different bylines, the magazine appeared to showcase a wider range of authors, while readers unknowingly enjoyed three stories from one of science fiction's most prolific and influential writers. He graduated from CalTech, worked at Bell Labs, came up with the term transistor and according to the National Inventors Hall of Fame Pierce invented the first communications satellite. He was granted over 90 patents, and was awarded the Edison Medal, and the National Medal of Science. Henry Hasse has appeared on the podcast before, but today marks the Lost Sci-Fi Podcast debut of Albert dePina. Albert Robert dePina was born in 1901 in Havana, Cuba. Like many writers from the pulp science fiction era, very little is known about his life. Between 1943 and 1954, he published just ten stories, four of them co-written with Henry Hasse. dePina passed away in 1956 at the age of 55, less than two years after the publication of his final story.
