Journalist Michael Edison Hayden has spent years tracking extremism in America. His new book, "Strange People on the Hill," follows what happened when a far-right group moved its headquarters to a small town in rural West Virginia. On today's episode, I talk to journalist and writer Michael Edison Hayden. Originally from Port Washington, Long Island, Michael started out his career as a playwright before transitioning to journalism during a trip to India. This led to becoming one of the few reporters at ABC News covering far-right extremism, and eventually Michael became a Senior Investigative Reporter and Spokesperson for Southern Poverty Law Center, a position he held until 2023. With Jared Holt, he hosts the political podcast Posting Through It, and most recently, his book Strange People on the Hill: How Extremism Tore Apart a Small American Town was published by Bold Type/Hachette, and it is excellent! Michael Edison Hayden, former spokesperson for the Southern Poverty Law Center and author of the new text Strange People on the Hill: How Extremism Tore Apart a Small American Town, tracks the surge of white nationalism from Berkeley Springs, WV, all the way to the White House.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tavis-smiley--6286410/support.
At just 40 years old, Stephen Miller has cemented himself as the most influential policy mind and speechwriter of the MAGA era. Aside from Steve Bannon — and Trump himself — few figures have done more to define what MAGA means in practice. But influence is only part of the story. Miller is also one of the most polarizing figures in American politics. He has spent much of his career focused on restricting immigration, relentlessly pursuing those ideological efforts with striking intensity. To critics, that focus reflects a broader ideological project with profound consequences. In this episode, Posting Through It is joined by two people who knew Miller before he became a national figure: author and intellectual Peter Laufer, and Katie McHugh, the former Breitbart News writer who later released emails from Miller that referenced white nationalist material. They join Jared and Mike in helping trace how Miller rose to power—and what his trajectory reveals about the movement he helped shape.Order your copy of "Strange People on the Hill: How Extremism Tore Apart a Small American Town"Join us in Washington, DC, on April 11 at Politics & Prose (Conn. Politics remains an inherently unpredictable and often bizarre arena, driven by a cast of strange characters whose motivations rarely align with those of the average citizen. This eccentricity is on full display when elected officials like Senator Lindsey Graham prioritize Disney World vacations over urgent legislative duties, or when seasoned figures like Mark Sanford attempt political resurrections. The resulting landscape is a confusing mix of theatrical rallies and unchecked media praise, proving that the world of power operates on a logic all its own, where personal ambition often outweighs public service.
MAGA is at an existential crossroads right now. If that sounds strange to you, you haven't paid much attention to the movement's struggles with antisemitism, which exploded after the assassination of Charlie Kirk at a college speaking event last September. Our guest, investigative reporter and author Art Levine, recently covered the GOP's crisis with antisemitism in the Washington Spectator. It's arguably the biggest issue facing the conservative movement today, and what happens next may determine their future—and ours.Link for Art Levine:Washington Spectator: Inside the MAGA Meltdown Over Antisemitism"Mental Health, Inc.: How Corruption, Lax Oversight and Failed Reforms Endanger Our Most Vulnerable Citizens"Links for us:Join us in Washington, DC, for the release of Mike's first book, "Strange People on the Hill": Politics & Prose, April 11 @ 5pm (Free)Transition Music: "Sway Palms" by High Tides
In this intimate, two-handed edition of Posting Through It, Jared and Mike try to figure out whether the MAGA movement is actually faltering, as some news coverage would suggest. The short answer is yes: poll numbers are sagging, the economy is slumping, influencers are turning on one another, and the rhetoric has grown so absurd that less-online working people can no longer follow it. The more nuanced answer is that while the MAGA movement may be faltering, it could also be more dangerous than ever — precisely because of that chaos. Jared and Mike dive into the growing world of contrarian punditry that seeks to downplay Jeffrey Epstein's child sex abuse and discourage audiences from drawing conclusions about his connections to some of the world's wealthiest and most powerful people. They take a closer look at one online personality, Michael Tracey, to unpack this surreal and alarming trend.Later, they're joined by Ileana Justine, a journalist and content creator whose analysis of how Epstein and his powerful friends shaped the world millennial women were raised in recently went viral on Instagram and TikTok. They discuss the importance of confronting the impact of the Epstein Files on women, the harm encouraged by contrarian punditry that dismisses it, and which children's movies have the best soundtracks.Links for Ileana:Instagram (@ileana.justine) TikTok (@ileana.justine)Links for us:Join us in Washington, DC, for the release of Mike's first book, "Strange People on the Hill": Politics & Prose, April 11 @ 5pm (Free)Transition Music: “Time Capsule” by Fields & Forests
By now, you've probably seen it: someone you follow making a joke about "maxxing" or getting "mogged" on your timeline. These terms come from a terminally online subculture spun off of the so-called "manosphere" known as "looksmaxxing." It's hyper-focused on the shallowest dimension of masculinity: physical appearance.Clavicular, the subculture's breakout star, has been popping up everywhere lately, including in The New York Times. But most of this discourse has overlooked the toxic roots of "looksmaxxing" and the misogynist ideology at its core. This week, researcher Annie Kelly joins Jared and Mike to help fill that gap. MAGA has gone global. What started as an American political movement has evolved into an international force, energizing radical-right groups across the world and creating networks that link European extremists directly to sitting members of the U.S. Congress. Heidi Beirich, one of the leading researchers on the radical right and co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE), joins us to explore how we got here and what the global landscape looks like now.But first, the guys try to make sense of the increasingly bizarre vibes inside MAGA itself. Trump is suddenly praising Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, Marjorie Taylor Greene is rebranding using "woke" language, and no one seems to know what's happening anymore.GPAHE Stories We Discussed:Alleged Jakarta Bomber Leaves Behind Digital Trail Worshiping Past Racist AttackersActive Club Chapters Growing GloballyEurope's White Nationalist Identitarian Movement Ramping Up Fundraising EffortsMapping The Far Right: The Movement's Conferences Illuminate Its Growing Transnational NetworksHow the International Far Right is Getting on Board With Trump's Antifa Terrorist DesignationUsed "STRANGE20" for a discount when you preorder Mike's forthcoming book: "Strange People on the Hill: How Extremism Tore Apart a Small American Town"Transition Music: "Wrong Wire" by MYDGE
Jared and Mike welcome researcher and forthcoming author Madeline Peltz to talk about right-wing female influencer culture and the broader effort to recruit young and “fertile” women into the MAGA movement. The trio unpack the surreal online discourse surrounding Erika Kirk, her appearance alongside JD Vance, and the intense scrutiny of her fashion choices. They also dive into figures like Alex Clark, the influencer who urges young women to have children while remaining child-free herself, and Riley Gaines, best known for losing a race to a transgender swimmer and turning that moment into a political brand.Beyond individual personalities, the conversation explores what the “tradwife” aesthetic really represents — and how it ties into deeper ideological projects on the right. The episode also includes a look at the unfolding scandal at the Heritage Foundation, the latest conservative institution to confront the reality that it has a full-blown Nazi problem. No need to save yourself for marriage, this episode of "Posting Through It" is ready to recieve you!Links for Madeline:Newsletter: Number Two PencilBluesky (@peltzmadeline.bsky.social) / X (@peltzmadeline)Preorder Mike's book, "Strange People on the Hill" with the discount code STRANGE20.Transition Music: “Lucky” by Momma
Online can be a hellish place. In this episode, Jared and Mike dive into the darkest corners of the web with Will Stancil, a civil rights attorney recently turned into a literal cartoon by far-right extremists. After enduring years of online harassment, Stancil became the target of a Hitlerite activist Emily Youcis, whose mocking web animation has found unsettling popularity — even among powerful tech reactionaries like Marc Andreessen.Stancil unpacks what he's been through, reflects on how to stay grounded amid relentless hate, and laughs at himself along the way. Plus: the trio swap thoughts on late-night snacking, favorite music, and disastrous first dates. We are part of a real-life story that is going on around us, but many of us haven't yet realized our role in God's story. To be a holy people is to be an intentional, loving people, with a purpose--to bring others to Him. We are now the place where heaven and earth intersect and from which the glory of God radiates out into the world. We are the people of God.

In a timely sermon titled "Strange Times ...Strange Things, Strange People," Pastor Femi Paul illuminated the challenges of the times we are in, drawing from 1 Peter 4:12 (TPT): "Beloved friends, if life gets extremely difficult, with many tests, don't be bewildered as though something strange were overwhelming you!" The key theme resonated with the congregation, and also echoed in this prayer by Apostle Anselm Madubuko: "May you not be swallowed up by these strange times and this unsettling season as they come, in Jesus' name." In conclusion, Pastor Femi reminded everyone of the reassuring promise found in 1 Peter 4:12-13 (MSG): "When life gets really difficult, don't jump to the conclusion that God isn't on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner!" In these uncertain times, the message inspired faith and resilience, reminding believers that amidst trials and tribulations, God is ever-present, refining and preparing us for the glory that awaits. Let's hold fast to hope, knowing that beyond the challenges lie opportunities for growth and divine breakthroughs.
