Former Governor, Congressman, and Presidential Candidate Mark Sanford joins me this week to discuss resilience, leadership, and lessons from his dynamic political journey. A prominent Republican figure, Sanford rose to national attention in 1994 as South Carolina's Congressman, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most fiscally conservative members of Congress. He later served two terms as Governor, implementing policies aimed at improving the state's business climate and job prospects. However, his career faced a turning point in 2009 due to a widely publicized affair that led to the end of his marriage and seemingly his political future. In a remarkable comeback, Sanford reclaimed his congressional seat in 2013 and became one of President Trump's few vocal Republican critics, a stance that ultimately led to his 2018 primary defeat. In his memoir, Two Roads Diverged, Sanford reflects on the defining moments of his public life, sharing candid insights on his mistakes, growth, and the lessons learned in maintaining integrity even when it's challenging. Sanford's story is a compelling look at resilience, redemption, and the complexity of American politics._______________________More about Mark SanfordSanford burst onto the national stage in 1994 when he was elected to represent South Carolina's 1st congressional district. A fiscally conservative Republican, Sanford quickly gained a reputation as Congress's most fiscally conservative member, known for his unwavering commitment to reducing government spending. His political star continued to rise as he was elected Governor of South Carolina, serving two terms and accomplishing a long list of firsts designed to better people's lives and make the state more inviting for businesses and entrepreneurs. However, Sanford's life took a major turn in his sixth year as Governor. In 2009, a well-chronicled affair brought about the collapse of his 20-year marriage and what seemed to be the end of his political career. Yet, in a remarkable display of political resilience, Sanford made a comeback in 2013, winning a special election to reclaim his old congressional seat and serving until 2019.During his second stint in Congress, Sanford became known as one of President Trump's most vocal Republican critics, a stance that ultimately contributed to his primary defeat in 2018. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Sanford briefly threw his hat into the ring for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination, positioning himself as a voice for fiscal responsibility.Discover more about Mark Sanford at https://www.marksanford.com/_______________________Connect with Whitney McDuffAttribution Link: Whitney's Website Attribution Link: The Dames Group Attribution Link: Standing Ovation Society –––––––––––––––––––––––––––Track: Welcome — Declan DP [Audio Library Release]Music provided by Audio Library PlusWatch: • Welcome — Declan DP | Free Background... After Eric unleashes a tirade against Pinterest, his winner for Most Homophobic Social Media Platform In Existence, he and Christopher kick off the next chapter of Sex Scandal Summer by serving up an hour of television that makes its host look worse than the scandalous subject. In episode 2, season 1 of THE UNITED STATE OF SCANDAL, entitled “Mark Sanford”, the notoriously unfaithful conservative Southern politician pales in comparison to host Jake Tapper, who, while making the story largely about himself, reveals distressing political biases hiding behind a strange soft-pedaled apology. In the end, Christopher and Eric are left craving some real journalism on this iconic political sex scandal — or maybe just a long hike on the Appalachian Trial with their favorite international reporters.

This episode for our Host Randal Wallace may be the most fun of any we have done. It tells the story of the life of the Congressional District and region of South Carolina that was the 6th District of South Carolina. It opens after ABSCAM has ended John Jenrette's career and everyone involved is moving on from the scandal. The District was represented by John Napier for a single term, then by a Florence , South Carolina Democrat named Robin Tallon for a number of years. But after the 1990 census the former 6th District is divided up geographically and its political strength evaporates. Tallon steps down as James Clyburn is elected to serve the new 6th District which engulfs Florence County. While Horry County is placed in the South Carolina First District where it is dominated by Charleston S.C. Over the next twenty years the region has several different Congressman all but one of which is from Charleston County with various interest levels for what is happening in Horry and Georgetown Counties. We are represented by Tommy Hartnett, Arthur Ravenell, Mark Sanford, Henry Brown (Berkely County) , and Tim Scott. Then in 2010 everything changed. A new census led to a big fight in the South Carolina State House as the state was awarded a new 7th Congressional District. We will see the maneuverings by the man who could rightfully be called the Father of the 7th district, Alan Clemmons, lead to the South Carolina Pee Dee Region finally getting its seat back in which the region was represented together. That is where the fun part for our Host begins as we relive that very first race for Congress and the election of that first 7th district Congressman ensues. which eventually led to the election of Tom Rice. A race in which our host, Randal Wallace, was a small part as a candidate for Congress. We will also see the rise of our new Congressman Russell Fry, who attained the office just at the beginning of this year , 2024, after his endorsement by former President Donald Trump, and his historic election victory. All of which will lead us back to a final look at the remarkable life and contributions to our region of our first, and until this year, only Horry County native Congressman John Jenrette. His career was a rollercoaster ride of wild excess, historic success, and an enormously dramatic and historic fall, all of which happened in a pivotal 6 year period that laid the foundation for a region of the country that can now lay claim to the title the fastest growing area in the nation. Comets have staying power because they orbit the sun, while shooting stars burn up as they crash through the Earth's atmosphere. The early take on Nikki Haley, who made her GOP presidential primary debut yesterday with a speech in Charleston, S.C., is that she's more likely to shine brightly for a moment and then fall to Earth. “[H]ers will be a highly conventional campaign,” wrote Rich Lowry after watching her announcement video, and “there will be a number of other candidates with as strong or a stronger case to represent generational change.” In a pretty brutal editorial this morning, the Wall Street Journal says there is “no clear rationale for her candidacy.” Over at the Times, they assembled 10 pundits to assess Haley's candidacy, and the majority opinion was that the two-term governor and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations shouldn't be taken very seriously. “Nikki Haley Will Not Be the Next President,” reads the headline. We are old enough to remember when pundits in 2015 declared that Donald Trump would never be president, and we can recall nights in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada in late 2019 and early 2020 when the same was said about Joe Biden. Haley acknowledged the low expectations set by the nattering nabobs. “I've been underestimated before,” she said. She entered politics in 2004 by defeating South Carolina's longest-serving House member. In 2010, she leapt from the statehouse to the governor's mansion after defeating a field of seasoned politicians in a GOP primary and overcoming her close association with disgraced Gov. Mark Sanford. Subscribe to the POLITICO Playbook newsletter Raghu Manavalan is the host and senior editor of POLITICO's Playbook Daily Briefing. South Carolina senators rejected a ban on almost all abortions Thursday in a special session called in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Although Republicans had a majority of votes to pass the ban, Republican Sen. Tom Davis threatened to filibuster and proponents of the ban could not get the extra votes to stop him. Davis, the chief of staff for former Gov. Mark Sanford before being elected to the Senate in 2009, was joined by the three Republican women in the Senate, a fifth GOP colleague and all the chamber's Democrats to oppose the proposed ban. Davis opposes a blanket ban on abortions in South Carolina and said he would argue against the bill until the 46-member Senate mustered the 26 votes required to end the filibuster. That appeared unlikely to happen, as only after 24 senators voted for an amended bill that included exceptions for pregnancies cause by rape or incest up to 12 weeks after conception. Twenty senators were opposed and two were absent. After a recess to work through their options, Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey conceded the abortion ban likely couldn't pass, although a vote to end debate had not been taken. ”This is a math question, you have to have the votes to pass it - and we do not,” Massey said. Davis said he promised his daughters he would not vote to make South Carolina's current six-week abortion ban stricter because women have rights, too. Remember that time in the bible when Jesus was getting divorced, and his ex-wife didn't want the kids to sleep over at his house with any paramours about? Former Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, does! Or rather, he tried to imagine what Jesus would do if HE had been caught having an adulterous affair with a hot Argentinian mistress and not hiking the Appalachian Trail. Apparently it's exactly the same thing that Governor Sanford did so everything turned out peachy. Mr. Sanford was quick to impeach Bill Clinton for having an affair and even quicker to forgive himself for the same transgression. But it was a forgiveness that came after several very public apologies and some help from his political-religious group, The Family. The good news is that The Family (aka The Fellowship) has a lot of experience helping politicians deal with infidelities, they really understand politics, and religion, and exactly how Heaven wants things ordered on Earth. From C Street to your street, the Apologists tackle Apocalyptic Christianity's influence in 21st Century politics.
National Debt is the Impending Crisis America Doesn't Want to Talk About (0:30)Guest: Mark Sanford, former Republican Congressman and South Carolina GovernorIn the last year, the US Government spent nearly one trillion dollars more than it brought it. That's what's known as the federal deficit, and it's been growing steadily for the last four years, even though the economy has been doing well. Normally, you'd expect to go deeper into debt during hard economic times. But the US Government is doing the opposite and Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell recently warned the financial path we're on as a country is unsustainable. Mark Sanford calls it “the most predictable financial crisis in the history of man.” He's a Republican, a former Congressman and Governor from South Carolina. And he just ended what turned out to be a pretty short bid to challenge President Trump. Retail Stores Aren't Dead, They're Just Different Now (21:04)Guest: Barbara Kahn, professor of marketing, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, author of “The Shopping Revolution: How Successful Retailers Win Customers in an Era of Endless Disruption” The biggest shopping season of the year is upon us. Will you battle the crowds on Black Friday or be at your computer early Monday snagging cyber-deals? Probably both because we shop in all the places now - websites, apps, stores. Catalogs are even making a comeback, which you know if your kids have been poring over the toy catalog Amazon sent out this year. An honest-to-goodness, glossy-paged magazine of toys for sale on Amazon. What will they think of next? Wharton School marketing professor Barbara Kahn has some ideas. She's author of The Shopping Revolution: How Successful Retailers Win Customers in an Era of Endless Disruption. Ask An Expert: Preparing a Great Thanksgiving Feast (35:47)Guest: Chef Todd Leonard, Associate Professor -- Culinary Arts, Utah Valley UniversityOur listeners have all sorts of Thanksgiving Dinner questions. Nonprofit Teaches Kids to Write and Produce Music in Exchange for Good Grades (51:11)Guest: Brandon Steppe, Founder and Executive Director at The David's Harp FoundationThere was a point about 15 years ago when Brandon Steppe set out to become a rapper and music producer. He even built a recording studio in his garage. And then a visit from a neighbor kid, changed everything. Today, Steppe runs a nonprofit called the David's Harp Foundation in San Diego. He mentors disadvantaged young people and gives them free access to his recording studio. But to earn studio time, kids have to get good grades. This Thanksgiving, Rediscover How America's Indigenous People Ate Before the Colonists Came (1:10:38)Guest: Sean Sherman, Founder, CEO, The Sioux Chef, author of “The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen”Thanksgiving is a fraught holiday for many Native Americans. In Massachusetts at the site of the alleged First Thanksgiving, descendants of the indigenous people who were murdered and displaced by the Colonists mark the fourth Thursday of November as a “National Day of Mourning.” Many find the warm-fuzzy Pilgrims and Indians school pageants deeply offensive for perpetuating stereotypes and giving the impression that America's native inhabitants were treated well by European colonists. They were not. Is there a better way to think about Thanksgiving? Lakota Sioux Chef Sean Sherman has some ideas. How Do Alternative Approaches to Grading Affect Learning? (1:27:35)Guest: Jesse Stommel, PhD, Senior Lecturer of digital studies and digital learning fellow at the University of Mary WashingtonStudents across the country are barreling toward final exams before the holiday break, hoping for As and Bs. In Jesse Stommel's courses at the University of Mary Washington, the students will be grading themselves. Stommel doesn't believe in giving letter grades and he's managed to avoid doing it the 20 years he's been a college professor. More high school and college professors are joining him, of late. Hear why Stommel is so committed to “ungrading.”

Isaiah 61 – rebuilding ancient ruins These devastations are in existence partly because of American public policy to concentrate poverty, largely poor black people. If God built a new humanity which overcame divisions, should we not be continuing in that work? Mark Sanford and Jason watched Selma. Large scale brutality. There were people fighting and dying for freedom they're already supposed to have. We have all inherited this history of oppression and have a responsibility to undo it. Today, the Gospel is largely self-centered. But the Gospel of the Kingdom is one of togetherness, which overcomes differences and knits a new humanity. The state of most inner cities was primarily caused by racism. Policing, politics, empowerment cannot wholly solve these problems and heal these wounds. The Gospel of the Kingdom goes beyond salvation, and creates a new humanity living a new life with a new set of values. Are you walking in the privilege you've inherited? Whose Gospel did you believe? Two gospels John's gospel addressed elemental things to prepare for what was coming. More personal, and this “personal savior”, sin-focused gospel became the driving force in modern American Christianity. John's Gospel is not false, simply not full. Jesus Gospel – The Gospel of the Kingdom. This is outwardly focused because what God is doing is so much bigger than you. The Gospel does not mean all YOUR problems go away. Simply look at the people in the Bible. Our emphasis must be on the BRIDE of Christ. This is a much bigger picture, and cannot be self-focused. We cannot force freedom of the Holy Spirit upon someone. Jesus Gospel brings healing and reconciliation. Jesus' Gospel requires us to steward this world with humble service. Sun Ministries Leadership CenterNot just a big big house with lots and lots of rooms. The aspect of the ministry which relocates and trains missionaries. Facilitating a missionary movement to the inner cities of America, building faith communities from a position of reformations, utilizing the other tools in the ministry, the Opportunity Center and the Narrow Gate. Isaiah 58 – The Gospel has been lost, and if you live the lifestyle of fasting, you will repair the path to the true Gospel. Those in the Urban Missions Training work in the ministry and engage in teaching, training, and testing. If Jesus has not transformed you, it will be very hard to make disciples. How is satan holding this community down? Engage in prayer, spiritual warfare, and utilizing resources to meet needs of the afflicted. Utilizing existing services so we don't have to recreate things and can build partnerships. Being an ambassador of Christ. Leadership Center also leads in the community to equip and organize. Where you are not consecrated, you leave yourself at risk of being attacked and wounded by the enemy. Caring for each other, our community, and doing it through service, and not for attention.
