Scott DeLuzio is the author of SURVIVING SON: An Afghanistan War Veteran Reveals His Nightmare of Becoming a Gold Star Brother. He owns an e-commerce software development business and is an Army veteran, having served six years with the Army National Guard, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. Scott's brother, Steven, was also deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. Unfortunately, Steven was killed in action on August 22, 2010. After returning home, Scott struggled with PTSD and the loss of his only sibling. Scott started Drive On Podcast to connect with current and prior service members. He interviews veterans and civilians to discuss personal triumphs, life experiences, resources, and emotional hardships to give hope and strength to the military community. Scott lives in Surprise, Arizona, with his wife, Vicki DeLuzio, and their three children. Surviving Son is a compelling true story that provides the reader with an insight into the life of a combat infantryman who fought in Afghanistan at the same time as his younger brother, Steven, who was killed in action just miles away. Scott takes the reader on a journey through his upper-middle-class childhood to his call to service after 9/11. With college degrees and a bright future ahead of them, they left the safety of suburban life to fight on the front lines in Afghanistan. When Scott was asked why he would do this, he responded, “Why not me?” The story provides many details that give the reader a clear picture of what it was like to fight for their country in a hostile war zone. Scott explains with raw emotion how he learned of his brother's death, and minutes later, he was engaged in combat with the Taliban, the same group responsible for his brother's death. He vividly reveals how he continued to struggle with PTSD from the stresses of combat, the loss of his only sibling, and the transition to civilian life. SGT Steven Joseph DeLuzio, 25, of South Glastonbury, CT, died in battle on Sunday August 22, 2010 in Paktia Province, Afghanistan while serving with the Vermont National Guard. Steven was born on February 25, 1985 in Hartford, CT. He was the beloved son of Mark C. and Diane (Lysik) DeLuzio of South Glastonbury where he lived most of his life. Steven graduated from Glastonbury High School in 2003 and was president of his freshman class. He attended Hofstra University in New York, Norwich University in Vermont and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Hartford in 2009 with a degree in accounting. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, he was employed as an accountant at the CPA firm JH Cohn in Glastonbury. Steven belonged to the Co. A-3/172 Infantry 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (MTN) in Jericho, Vermont. This was Steven's second tour of duty as he was deployed in Ramadi, Iraq in 2006 earning the Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy Unit Citation from that deployment. For his service in Afghanistan, Steven was also awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, NATO Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Army Good Conduct Medal.

“You need some help yourself and it's hard to switch to that mindset. But if you don't do that, you can't possibly be the type of person who's going to give your 100% effort to help other people.” -Scott DeLuzio Asking for help doesn't make us weak. It makes us strong! There's a lot to be said for how men can build each other up. But sometimes, some of us men just don't know how to ask for help. It's not that we're trying to be rude or ungrateful—it's just that we've been taught from a young age that it's not polite to ask for help, and so we don't do it. But what if being a man means giving ourselves permission to ask for help?  This week, I got to sit with Surviving Son author Scott DeLuzio to discuss why asking for help is something we should start practicing. Scott is an author, podcast host, and war veteran. He and his brother Steven were deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. Sadly, Scott lost his brother in the war. Following his transition to civilian life, Scott found it hard to overcome his grief and trauma. He almost lost his way, until he decided to man up and do what most of us are afraid to do— ask for help.  Listen in as Scott and I talk about the biggest lesson we can learn about mental health, how we can give voice to the voiceless, why it's necessary that we share our story to the world, and how we can overcome the fear of asking for help.    Connect The Modern Man: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube   Highlights:  03:59 Joining the Military 09:52 The Nightmare of the Surviving Son 14:00 Overcoming PTSD 19:43 The Biggest Lesson on Mental Health  22:38 Ask For Help 27:23 Giving Voice to the Voiceless 31:11 Don't Take Your Story to the Grave 33:00 Recap

On today's episode of From Grief to Gold, I had the honor of hosting Scott DeLuzio on my podcast. We initially connected over social media because we were both writing and publishing around the same time, so I'm really glad to have him as my first guest for this podcast. We talk about: The healing journey he went through from being overseas and losing his brother that was also downrange in Afghanistan, the stresses of combat, and coming back from deployment and readjusting to civilian life. We also dive into the creation of Scott's book, "Surviving Son," and the healing journey he's been on over the last 12 years. He shares about how his book isn't just his story of combat, but his brother's story. What military families go through when deployed, if someone doesn't make it back home, and how it affects everyone. All with a goal of having others be a little more empathetic with one another. We discuss therapy options. How it's okay to ask for help, and continue to ask for help if and when needed. But it's also important to be realistic about the timeframe for healing and growth in mental health, just like with a broken bone or other injury.
