This episode's guest is someone that many have known for her longstanding leadership in international education, but some of us might not have known her as a businesswoman, a political leader, a caregiver, and as a newly minted author. Marlene M. Johnson was the Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators for almost two decades and prior to that was Minnesota's first woman Lieutenant Governor. She is co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Minnesota Women's Campaign Fund. She is now on the advisory board of Kakenya's Dream, a board member of the Washington Office on Latin America, and a trustee of the Alexandria Trust. In 1988, she was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by the Kingdom of Sweden. In this episode we go behind the scenes with Marlene about her life and her new book, Rise to the Challenge: A memoir of politics, leadership, and love. Episode highlights: Marlene's reflections about her life's journey and how the book came about. How Marlene's career in politics and business and her early international exposure prepared her to be a non-traditional candidate yet a good fit for the role of NAFSA's CEO and Executive Director. The “ability to punt” and how this attribute served Marlene well while leading NAFSA, whether it was weathering the Asian financial crisis that impacted Asian international students or the impact of 9/11 on the international education sector. Marlene's legacy of calling for a national policy on international education and her thoughts on where we stand now. Is the U.S. poised to have its first woman president and one whose life—coincidentally—reflects the legacy of international education? Marlene weighs in. The poignant love story of Marlene's life with her husband, Peter, and how their relationship influenced her and shaped her as a leader. Marlene's top 2-3 pieces of advice for women leaders. Today we're talking about catapulting your career into unexpected places, driven by self-reflection, self-determinism, and a recognition of your own self-limitations, with change advocate, and Editor in Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine, Jason Feifer.Speaking to a range of successful entrepreneurs is a part of Jason's day job, but he's also a bit of a start-up thinker himself. Aside from his role as editor, Jason is a podcast host, newsletter writer, speaker, start up advisor, book author … and perhaps most importantly, a reinventor, describing himself as an all purpose swiss army knife. Rather than staying in the specialty field he had worked to define himself an expert in, Jason chose to rethink, and reconsider, who he was to people, to live up to the largest opportunity in front of him. Jason says a good starting point is to better understand yourself by creating a mission statement, not for what you do but what you're skilled in and what you can uniquely create. Jo and Jason also discuss working through trepidation that perhaps your success is a fleeting moment in time. That it may be a fluke, specific to the context, or unrepeatable. (A worry many successful people hold.) Jason advocates for sitting with the things you are good at and not discounting and offloading your strengths.Jason also explores the role of nostalgia as a change barrier. The past provides comfort and predictability, but also the false belief that things from our past were better than what the future can bring. He says, “The problem isn't changing but in defining yourself too narrowly" within the comfort of what was. >>>To look outside, Jason leverages his trusted network who he can be vulnerable with. These are people who he can ‘think out loud' with, who give him honest feedback on ideas, and help him get out of his own head.>>>Jason Feifer is the editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, a podcast host, book author, keynote speaker, startup advisor, and nonstop optimism machine. Additionally, Holly explains why the book is arranged into three major sections and why she provides explanations about Catholicism. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ See a video version of this Interview on YouTube (not live-action): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-spYpl8IyI Purchase a copy of Tolkien's Faith (from Amazon) Listen to "Writing Tips from Lewis and Tolkien" (King and Poe) Listen to Other Podcasts with Holly Ordway Other Useful Links: Knowing and Understanding C.S. If you've never heard of Nick Panaseiko, that's entirely understandable. He was a backstage guy, making sure that the act onstage is playing to a full house, making sure their records were on the radio and in record stores. He was a promo man. Kelly Jay of Crowbar referred to the Canadian music industry of the era as a matter of ‘six degrees of Nick Panaseiko'. Taking off from a popular Panasonic ad campaign of the day, legendary rocker Ronnie Hawkins dubbed him, “Nick Panaseiko, a man slightly ahead of his time”. And at his induction into the Jack Richardson Hall of Fame, Alice Cooper, Ronnie Hawkins and Peter Criss of KISS all sent video tributes.“Promo Man” places Nick in the zeitgeist of the music industry in the 60s and 70s and his work with the acts who were - and in some cases still are - the aural soundtrack to our lives. How Nick made his way to the epicenter of the Canadian music industry and made his way out alive is the story of “Promo Man”. It takes the reader from the 17-year-old kid who booked The Supremes to a sold-out show through his success breaking KISS in Canada to his time with Quality Records and WEA in the 70s.While Nick's metier was promoting acts, his other duties as assigned including finding Freddie Mercury and Liberace Toronto gay bars, playing board games with young Marlon Richards, finding cocaine for his father, Keith and Ronnie Wood, having to deal with a racist Bill Cosby, being the de-facto minder for Keith Moon at a party and being an extra in a Van Halen video. This book truly lives in his tales of a breakneck lifestyle, working with and promoting acts including Queen, Liberace, The Cars, Van Halen, and finally The Rolling Stones. This is an insider's look at the freewheeling times of the Canadian music industry as it came into being, told by the consummate insider. Key to the book are the many photographs by acclaimed rock and roll photographer John Rowlands of Nick with artists including Debbie Harry, Donna Summer, KISS, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Johnny Cash, Liberace, Keith Moon, and Freddie Mercury. The fast pace of the narrative coupled with the photos brings to life a much-mythologized time in popular music. To tell Nick Panaseiko's story is author Bob Klanac, a Canadian music journalist who has penned hundreds of reviews and interviews. Among them: Levon Helm, John Mayer, Garth Hudson, Bill Wyman, Chris Cornell, Johnny Winters and many, many more. He was a juror for the Polaris Music Prize and is currently a member of the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize Jury and a Juno Awards juror. Healing From Cancer with Clarita Escalante The day all her fears were confirmed was the beginning of a healing journey she never imagined. Though Clarita quickly had her surgery, the long period of darkness and despair that followed brought her to knees. In the end, the despair gave rise to Clarita's need to understand her body and how it functions so that she would never be in that position again. She went back to school to study nutrition and became a Certified Transformational Nutrition Health Coach …but it wasn't enough for her. As she healed her physical body, deep awarenesses surfaced from within and she began her transformational inner work. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Be inspired by how Clarita turned her cancer scare into a new life and lifestyle that she shares with others. Add yourself to the waiting list for Clarita's LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE RETREAT in breathtaking Sedona, AZ, February 11-13, 2022 Subscribe to Clarita's newsletter. Episode Highlights Life Changing Diagnosis Four years ago Clarita was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. She went in for her annual screening and after an abnormal reading and several follow up tests, she was told she had breast cancer. She was given her diagnosis on Friday and was scheduled for surgery the following Monday. Clarita was in shock and wanted more time to process. Her doctor told her, “(In a month) the cancer might progress to a more serious stage. …you are in a position in which you can have the surgery and move on with your life.” Sitting in Victim Mode For almost year Clarita blamed herself, was in disbelief, and asked herself over and over why this happened to her. She felt the world was against her. She felt the negative thoughts affecting her physically with headaches and discomfort in her body. Clarita had an impactful moment of clarity on a run. She pleaded with the Universe to get her out of this state. Soon after, she went back to school and studied nutrition. Nutrition is Vital But Not Enough “I ate healthy and exercised and yet was still at war within myself. I needed to heal myself from within.” Clarita started her inner healing process with childhood trauma work and therapy. She went on to do many other modalities. “I did a little bit of everything to be honest. And, I believe that's the best way to do it. You'll be surprised by what really speaks to you or really makes a difference for you.” Inner child work, meditation, and journaling have been the most impactful for Clarita. Offerings Clarita offers a motivational and inspirational text every Monday. On Fridays, she offers a newsletter filled with tools that focus on holistic health and nutrition. Throughout the week she posts recipes, updates and offerings, and motivation on her social media. Most recently Clarita published her Wellness Journal. “I couldn't talk about a healthy lifestyle without talking about the journal. This is the most powerful tool that made and continues to make the biggest difference in my life.” Sometimes We Have The Best Intentions… Clarita noticed that most of her clients and community members truly wanted to make changes and new and healthy habits. The challenge is actually understanding that we need to intentionally create space for it. The journey of holistic health begins with dedicating time and space for it instead of waking up and letting the day take you wherever the needs of others and work are. The journal has a planner to help carve out time for ourselves, set intentions, commit to our goals and dreams, and stick to them. “There is a magic that happens when you really put our thoughts into paper. There's a connection that happens within yourself. I started writing and sharing my journey with myself and really looking into my thoughts. I realized that even though I was working on my health journey on the outside, my inner thoughts were so toxic.” “We live busy lives and thoughts just come in. We make decisions every single day based on those thoughts. Sometimes our thoughts are not the reality of who we are.” The Wellness Journal is a tool to have awareness of our thoughts. I Rise, You Rise In the process of publishing her journal, Clarita reached out to them to ask other women who had published books and journals. She was overwhelmed by their willingness to share every bit of their process. After she published, many women who were inspired by her work asked her how she did it. Clarita was able to pay it forward and share her process with them. In her podcast, Clarita shares her journey and knowledge. She also interviews other amazing women who share their journeys and knowledge. “(They) show us, inspire us, motivate us to continue on our journey. I have learned so much from these women.” 1% Better Everyday Clarita was inspired by the book Atomic Habits “We overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can do in a year.” Everyday, her goal is to be 1% better than before. She makes this happen by making space everyday to journal, acknowledge this intention, and recommit to it daily. About Clarita Clarita Escalante lives in Arizona with her husband and she has two daughters in college. She works full time in the mortgage industry while hosting her podcast The Clarita Escalante Show, coaching clients on their health and goals journey, publishing a weekly newsletter and weekly text, and launching her first holistic healing retreat. In 2018, Clarita received a diagnosis for breast cancer and has been sharing her journey since. She had her surgery three days after her diagnosis and screenings every 3 months thereafter. Most recently, she has been cleared to have screenings every 6 months! Clarita attributes her healing to healthy and holistic habits in nutrition, mindfulness, holistic therapies, inner child work, and journaling. The biggest step for her was making her time and needs a priority everyday. Enjoy the Podcast? If you enjoyed today's episode of The Heidi B Show, then hit subscribe, and share it with your friends! The ALL ME® Podcast Suicide Squeeze: Bill Kashatus Did you know that there was a book that was written about Taylor Hooton? In this podcast we had a chance to interview the author, Bill Kashatus, who wrote “Suicide Squeeze: Taylor Hooton, Rob Garibaldi, and the Fight against Teenage Steroid Abuse.” During this interview you're going to learn more about why Bill is so passionate about history, teaching, writing and coaching. He has such an incredible background that his life story which lead to writing a book about Taylor Hooton will keep you captivated. Taylor's brother, Don Jr., hosts this episode and it was the first time he had been part of a book, which he will share his experience with us about what it was like. Bill is going to take us through what it was like meeting the Hooton and Garibaldi family. You will hear him talk about why this was the hardest book he's had to write, and he's written a lot of books. The book is one that all parents and high school students should take a moment to read. Kashatus does a great job of taking a very complex topic and writing in a way that it's understandable to any audience. Below you will find some of the links that were mentioned in this podcast if you'd like to learn how to pick up a copy of “Suicide Squeeze”. Publishers Summary: Appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs - specifically, anabolic steroids (APEDs) - provide a tempting competitive advantage for amateur baseball players. But this shortcut can exact a fatal cost on talented athletes. In his urgent book Suicide Squeeze, William Kashatus chronicles the experiences of Taylor Hooton and Rob Garibaldi, two promising high school baseball players who abused APEDs in the hopes of attracting professional scouts and Division I recruiters. However, as a result of their steroid abuse, they ended up taking their own lives. In Suicide Squeeze - named for the high-risk play in baseball to steal home - Kashatus identifies the symptoms and dangers of steroid use among teens. Using archival research and interviews with the Hooton and Garibaldi families, he explores the lives and deaths of these two young men, the impact of their suicides on MLB, and the ongoing fight against adolescent APED use by their parents. A passionate appeal to prevent additional senseless deaths by athletes, Suicide Squeeze is an important contribution to debates on youth and sports and on public policy. The book is published by Temple University Press. Critic Reviews: “A must-read for all parents and for everyone interested in the integrity of sports.” (Rob Manfred, Commissioner of Baseball) “Every young person who reads this book represents a life potentially saved.” (Randy Levine, president, New York Yankees, and board Member, Taylor Hooton Foundation) “An outstanding book that should be read by anyone who has or will have a connection with young people who play sports. Suicide Squeeze reads like a novel and instructs like a textbook.” (Richard P. Borkowski, Sport and Recreation Safety Consultant) Resource Links: Learn more about William C. In this episode, I interview Blair Baldwin, founder of AgeUp about inter-generational money conversations and why his team decided to develop an innovative insurance product to address longevity risk (aka living into your 90s or 100s!). Discover why talking to your parents about their finances can be so uncomfortable and how AgeUp might be able to help bridge the gap. Blair Baldwin is the founder and general manager of AgeUp, a new financial product that fundamentally reimagines how annuities can both materially help the lives of middle class Americans and solve a looming financial crisis facing our country: how to close the gap between life expectancy and retirement savings. Blair and his team developed AgeUp as a new business unit inside Haven Life, MassMutual's in-house startup. Show Notes: Here are the resources that were mentioned during this podcast. In this episode, I sit down with Nevar Malabre (@_itsnevar) and we discuss his journey from a Chemist to an Author in an unrelated field. Nevar educates me on how the stock market works, why crypto-currency is not dead and the importance of investing. One big take away here was Nevar's perspective on successful individuals. He goes on to name Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Warren Buffet and what they all have in common. Surprisingly, it's not some special gene or something unattainable. It's two things that all of us as humans living in first world countries can achieve. [9:43] Robert breaks down the history of genocide [12:45] The American atrocity that paved the way for abortion [17:29] The recipe for genocide [22:48] Why abortion is genocide [28:24] The part that technology and indifference play in perpetuating genocide [30:00] What is the believer’s role in the midst of the abortion genocide What do you think about when you hear the word genocide? Since the origin of sin, the human race has sought to dehumanize a segment of its population. From the Aztecs to the Holocaust the value of human life has been edited to fit a definition of convenience rather than a universally true one. And while all genocide is an unfathomable tragedy there is no genocide that has claimed more lives than abortion. Join Shawn, Steve, and Robert as they explain why abortion is genocide on this week’s episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast. Abortion is the textbook definition of genocide You don't have to delve too far into the comment sections of the internet to find people who are offended by abortion being defined as a genocide. It seems that the culture’s go-to move to keep from having intelligent arguments in favor of their position is to hide behind that offense like a shield. However, when you look at the U.N. approved definition of genocide it’s hard to see abortion as anything but an act committed with the intent to destroy (in whole or in part) a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Learn more about how the definition of genocide directly applies to abortion on this week’s episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast. The world’s history of genocide paved the way for abortion Since the dawn of time, the devaluation of human life has paved the way for the relatively global acceptance of abortion. Aztecs, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Nazis, and even so-called Christians committed atrocities that left the definition of person hood up to preference instead of the Word of God. Even events as recent as American slavery were instrumental in legalizing abortion. In context, Dred Scott set a dangerous precedent that opened the door for a ruling like Roe V. Wade. This week’s episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast will dive deep into the pages of history to find out how humanity’s past has determined the present. Every genocide needs a scapegoat and abortion is no exception Scapegoating is a tactic used to orchestrate every major genocide in human history. Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s economic decline after World War I. Pol Put used western influence as a reason to murder 25 percent of Cambodia’s population. There is always a reason even if that reason is never good enough to end a human life. What makes the genocide of abortion so unique and terrifying is that you can have any reason to end the life of an unborn child. Economic circumstances, genetic disabilities, or even the child being unwanted are all good enough reasons for places like Planned Parenthood to murder the innocent. Discover why scapegoating is just as effective today with abortion as it has been with genocides of the past on this week’s episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast. Understanding why abortion is genocide is the key to ending it When you look at the numbers alone, abortion is the most horrific genocide in human history. 56 million children lose their lives each year in the name of words like “pro-choice” and “human rights”. The irony of the latter is almost a laughable offense because the main platform in favor of abortion works to dehumanize unborn children with words like “fetus” and “potential life”. However, when the truth is allowed to prevail over propaganda abortion is able to be unmasked as the genocide that it is. Imagine the potential for change if the social justice-minded generation of today was to grasp that reality. That would be the end of abortion. Gain the knowledge you need to define abortion for what it really is on this week’s episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast. Author Platform Rocket: Self Publishing, Marketing & Advertising Advice For Authors
Click Here & Learn How Your Book Can Add 6 Figures To Your Business (Even If You Haven't Written It Yet) In episode 31 of Author Platform Rocket, Jonny Andrews discusses: What happens when authors evolve beyond Amazon? Listen in and find out. (Hint: It's quite shocking) Download PDF Podcast Transcription Addictive nature of social media could potentially make Facebook a target like cigarette companies. Facebook slashed 55 million viewing hours to reduce quantity of time spent on the platform and increase quality time spent. If you are making your living off of book revenue on book publishing sites, the margins are low and you retain no buyer data. You need to run ads if you want a successful business. Tracking pixels placed on websites allow authors to see the results of the ads they are running. Facebook has stated that there is a 00.7% correlation between a click and a sale. CPC is a joke. If you believe it is bringing you sales – you just got lucky. It is untrue that people won’t buy anywhere but Amazon. Amazon’s affiliate program only offers 5% after 60 days. You could set up instant payment on commissions of books from your site for other people promoting the sales of your books. If you are in pre-order, there is no benefit to be on Kindle. The average book buyers are between 35-55 years old. If you can’t tell which ads are working for you – you are flying blind and will be left behind. Download PDF Podcast Transcription 3 Key Points: 1. Facebook reduced 55 million viewing hours to decrease quantity of time spent on the platform. Tracking pixels placed on your author website allows authors you to see the results of the ads that you are running. The average age of book buyers is 35-55. Tweetable Quotes: - “If you were doing Facebook ads in your business, in your author business, or to your book or whatever it is that you are doing, you could see a very rapid, 45% increase in cost across the board.” – Jonny Andrews. - “Facebook announced that they had slashed 55 million viewing hours off of their platform.” – Jonny Andrews. - “You must start selling through your own website.” – Jonny Andrews. Join Chris & Chelsey as they analyze & review (with FULL SPOILERS) Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows! Both Part 1 from 2010 & Part 2 from 2011 of JK Rowling's EPIC fantasy movie franchise are covered in a David Yates-directed saga capper that showcases the brilliance of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes & the late great Alan Rickman. For the 7th & final time we join Harry, Hermione & Ron as they embark on a darkly desperate, cerebral & war-driven journey through gripping tension & world-ending stakes to destroy the 7 horcruxes. Relationships are tested to their limits with character drama & storytelling depth that hit an all-time high for the series. We get the action we wanted from The Half-Blood Prince & indulge in some very special & satisfying moments from the queen of Hogwarts, Professor McGonagall! David Yates proves why he was given the keys to the kingdom with a character death we will never forget in Part 1's setup for the ultimate wizarding war. PLUS! Chris says "teleport" rather than "apparate" at every chance he gets & definitely DO NOT take a shot every time Chelsey says "in the books.." Then The home stretch begins with Part 2's dauntingly high stakes adventure to abolish Voldemort's dark magic leading to - the final battle of Hogwarts! We see shades of Indiana Jones in the act of freeing a dragon & finally resolve our series-long debates with climactic confrontations. The biggest of budget visuals set new fantasy film standards that have yet to be reached again in this ultimate hero's journey. We, of course, dive into that shocking & traumatic revelation that changes the entire saga, Chelsey drops a very interesting fan theory AND we rank the entire series. Have you ever had a time where you saw your Amazon private label product sales drop for a day, or two, or more? What have you done to check on that once you notice it? If you’re not checking on it, you could be missing out on sales because your listing is suppressed by Amazon for not adhering to the terms of service. On this episode Scott shares his own story of how a new product he place onto Amazon was suppressed, why it was suppressed, what he did to fix the problem, and what he suggests you do on a regular basis to monitor your product listings and ensure that your products are always live and ready to get more sales. How Scott discovered that his Amazon listing was suppressed. A normal part of Scott’s day every morning is to log into his Amazon seller account to check the status of his sales, inventory, and products and to check whether any red flags or issues have come up - like returns, seller feedback he needs to respond to, etc. But while he was traveling he was unable to stick to that routine and while he was offline some strange things happened, resulting in one of his listings being suppressed. Essentially, his listing was offline, not allowing anyone to see his listing or purchase the product. How did Scott figure out that the listing was being suppressed by Amazon? Listen to this episode to get all the details. What can you do to unsuppress a suppressed listing? Once you discover that your private label product has been suppressed by Amazon (taken off line) what can you do? First you need to scan through your listing in an effort to identify the things that might be wrong with your listing that is causing the suppression. It’s not always an easy thing to do because Amazon may not always tell you the specifics. You may have to go tab by tab through the back end of your listing to find any warnings or highlighted areas. It’s a tedious process but eventually you’ll find the problem. Listen to this episode to hear how Scott corrected a problem on one of his own listings and what he suggests you do to avoid this problem on yours. Tips on optimizing your private label listing. Scott has talked about this issue quite a bit on previous episodes but since new people are coming into the Amazing Seller community every day, he feels it’s appropriate to repeat some of the most important things. One of those is how to optimize your listing, including your titles, proper keyword formatting and completion, bullet points, images, descriptions, and more. On this episode Scott walks through those basic things again to help you first identify the problems your listing may have and second, to help you correct those problems so you can get your listing running as smoothly as possible, which will result in more eyes on your product and more sales. Adding your primary keywords in your title is a powerful tactic for listing optimization. If you’re trying to optimize your listing you have to start with your title. The title is the main thing that is going to be searched by Amazon to make keyword matches with search queries, so it’s important that you craft a keyword rich but natural title for your product to make the most of the keywords that people are searching for. That’s how you’ll increase your chances of your product being seen by people who are searching for it or something similar. On this episode Scott gives you his best tips for optimizing your titles including the rationale behind them and how you can go about doing them on your listings.
