She is co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Minnesota Women's Campaign Fund. Today we're talking about catapulting your career into unexpected places, driven by self-reflection, self-determinism, and a recognition of your own self-limitations, with change advocate, and Editor in Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine, Jason Feifer.Speaking to a range of successful entrepreneurs is a part of Jason's day job, but he's also a bit of a start-up thinker himself. Aside from his role as editor, Jason is a podcast host, newsletter writer, speaker, start up advisor, book author … and perhaps most importantly, a reinventor, describing himself as an all purpose swiss army knife. Rather than staying in the specialty field he had worked to define himself an expert in, Jason chose to rethink, and reconsider, who he was to people, to live up to the largest opportunity in front of him. Jason says a good starting point is to better understand yourself by creating a mission statement, not for what you do but what you're skilled in and what you can uniquely create. Jo and Jason also discuss working through trepidation that perhaps your success is a fleeting moment in time. That it may be a fluke, specific to the context, or unrepeatable. (A worry many successful people hold.) Jason advocates for sitting with the things you are good at and not discounting and offloading your strengths.Jason also explores the role of nostalgia as a change barrier. The past provides comfort and predictability, but also the false belief that things from our past were better than what the future can bring. He says, “The problem isn't changing but in defining yourself too narrowly" within the comfort of what was. >>>To look outside, Jason leverages his trusted network who he can be vulnerable with. These are people who he can ‘think out loud' with, who give him honest feedback on ideas, and help him get out of his own head.>>>Jason Feifer is the editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, a podcast host, book author, keynote speaker, startup advisor, and nonstop optimism machine. If you've never heard of Nick Panaseiko, that's entirely understandable. He was a backstage guy, making sure that the act onstage is playing to a full house, making sure their records were on the radio and in record stores. He was a promo man. Kelly Jay of Crowbar referred to the Canadian music industry of the era as a matter of ‘six degrees of Nick Panaseiko'. Taking off from a popular Panasonic ad campaign of the day, legendary rocker Ronnie Hawkins dubbed him, “Nick Panaseiko, a man slightly ahead of his time”. And at his induction into the Jack Richardson Hall of Fame, Alice Cooper, Ronnie Hawkins and Peter Criss of KISS all sent video tributes.“Promo Man” places Nick in the zeitgeist of the music industry in the 60s and 70s and his work with the acts who were - and in some cases still are - the aural soundtrack to our lives. How Nick made his way to the epicenter of the Canadian music industry and made his way out alive is the story of “Promo Man”. It takes the reader from the 17-year-old kid who booked The Supremes to a sold-out show through his success breaking KISS in Canada to his time with Quality Records and WEA in the 70s.While Nick's metier was promoting acts, his other duties as assigned including finding Freddie Mercury and Liberace Toronto gay bars, playing board games with young Marlon Richards, finding cocaine for his father, Keith and Ronnie Wood, having to deal with a racist Bill Cosby, being the de-facto minder for Keith Moon at a party and being an extra in a Van Halen video. This book truly lives in his tales of a breakneck lifestyle, working with and promoting acts including Queen, Liberace, The Cars, Van Halen, and finally The Rolling Stones. This is an insider's look at the freewheeling times of the Canadian music industry as it came into being, told by the consummate insider. Key to the book are the many photographs by acclaimed rock and roll photographer John Rowlands of Nick with artists including Debbie Harry, Donna Summer, KISS, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Johnny Cash, Liberace, Keith Moon, and Freddie Mercury. The fast pace of the narrative coupled with the photos brings to life a much-mythologized time in popular music. To tell Nick Panaseiko's story is author Bob Klanac, a Canadian music journalist who has penned hundreds of reviews and interviews. Among them: Levon Helm, John Mayer, Garth Hudson, Bill Wyman, Chris Cornell, Johnny Winters and many, many more. He was a juror for the Polaris Music Prize and is currently a member of the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize Jury and a Juno Awards juror. Healing From Cancer with Clarita Escalante The day all her fears were confirmed was the beginning of a healing journey she never imagined.  Though Clarita quickly had her surgery, the long period of darkness and despair that followed brought her to knees.  In the end, the despair gave rise to Clarita's need to understand her body and how it functions so that she would never be in that position again.  She went back to school to study nutrition and became a Certified Transformational Nutrition Health Coach …but it wasn't enough for her.  As she healed her physical body, deep awarenesses surfaced from within and she began her transformational inner work.   Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Be inspired by how Clarita turned her cancer scare into a new life and lifestyle that she shares with others. She was given her diagnosis on Friday and was scheduled for surgery the following Monday. Clarita was in shock and wanted more time to process.  Her doctor told her, “(In a month) the cancer might progress to a more serious stage.  …you are in a position in which you can have the surgery and move on with your life.” Sitting in Victim Mode For almost year Clarita blamed herself, was in disbelief, and asked herself over and over why this happened to her.  She felt the world was against her. She felt the negative thoughts affecting her physically with headaches and discomfort in her body. Clarita had an impactful moment of clarity on a run.  She pleaded with the Universe to get her out of this state. Soon after, she went back to school and studied nutrition. Nutrition is Vital But Not Enough “I ate healthy and exercised and yet was still at war within myself.  I needed to heal myself from within.” Clarita started her inner healing process with childhood trauma work and therapy. She went on to do many other modalities. “I did a little bit of everything to be honest.  And, I believe that's the best way to do it.  You'll be surprised by what really speaks to you or really makes a difference for you.” Inner child work, meditation, and journaling have been the most impactful for Clarita.  Offerings Clarita offers a motivational and inspirational text every Monday. On Fridays, she offers a newsletter filled with tools that focus on holistic health and nutrition.  Throughout the week she posts recipes, updates and offerings, and motivation on her social media. Most recently Clarita published her Wellness Journal.  “I couldn't talk about a healthy lifestyle without talking about the journal.  This is the most powerful tool that made and continues to make the biggest difference in my life.” Sometimes We Have The Best Intentions… Clarita noticed that most of her clients and community members truly wanted to make changes and new and healthy habits.  The challenge is actually understanding that we need to intentionally create space for it.   The journey of holistic health begins with dedicating time and space for it instead of waking up and letting the day take you wherever the needs of others and work are.  The journal has a planner to help carve out time for ourselves, set intentions, commit to our goals and dreams, and stick to them. “There is a magic that happens when you really put our thoughts into paper.  There's a connection that happens within yourself. I started writing and sharing my journey with myself and really looking into my thoughts. I realized that even though I was working on my health journey on the outside, my inner thoughts were so toxic.” “We live busy lives and thoughts just come in. We make decisions every single day based on those thoughts. Sometimes our thoughts are not the reality of who we are.” The Wellness Journal is a tool to have awareness of our thoughts.   I Rise, You Rise In the process of publishing her journal, Clarita reached out to them to ask other women who had published books and journals.  She was overwhelmed by their willingness to share every bit of their process. After she published, many women who were inspired by her work asked her how she did it.  Clarita was able to pay it forward and share her process with them. In her podcast, Clarita shares her journey and knowledge. She also interviews other amazing women who share their journeys and knowledge.    “(They) show us, inspire us, motivate us to continue on our journey. I have learned so much from these women.” 1% Better Everyday Clarita was inspired by the book Atomic Habits “We overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can do in a year.”  Everyday, her goal is to be 1% better than before.  She makes this happen by making space everyday to journal, acknowledge this intention, and recommit to it daily. About Clarita Clarita Escalante lives in Arizona with her husband and she has two daughters in college.  She works full time in the mortgage industry while hosting her podcast The Clarita Escalante Show, coaching clients on their health and goals journey, publishing a weekly newsletter and weekly text, and launching her first holistic healing retreat.  In 2018, Clarita received a diagnosis for breast cancer and has been sharing her journey since.  She had her surgery three days after her diagnosis and screenings every  3 months thereafter.  Most recently, she has been cleared to have screenings every 6 months!  Clarita attributes her healing to healthy and holistic habits in nutrition, mindfulness, holistic therapies, inner child work, and journaling.  The biggest step for her was making her time and needs a priority everyday.     Enjoy the Podcast? The ALL ME® Podcast Suicide Squeeze:  Bill Kashatus Did you know that there was a book that was written about Taylor Hooton?  In this podcast we had a chance to interview the author, Bill Kashatus, who wrote “Suicide Squeeze:  Taylor Hooton, Rob Garibaldi, and the Fight against Teenage Steroid Abuse.” During this interview you're going to learn more about why Bill is so passionate about history, teaching, writing and coaching.  He has such an incredible background that his life story which lead to writing a book about Taylor Hooton will keep you captivated.  Taylor's brother, Don Jr., hosts this episode and it was the first time he had been part of a book, which he will share his experience with us about what it was like. Bill is going to take us through what it was like meeting the Hooton and Garibaldi family.  You will hear him talk about why this was the hardest book he's had to write, and he's written a lot of books.  The book is one that all parents and high school students should take a moment to read.  Kashatus does a great job of taking a very complex topic and writing in a way that it's understandable to any audience.  Below you will find some of the links that were mentioned in this podcast if you'd like to learn how to pick up a copy of “Suicide Squeeze”. Publishers Summary: Appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs - specifically, anabolic steroids (APEDs) - provide a tempting competitive advantage for amateur baseball players. But this shortcut can exact a fatal cost on talented athletes. In his urgent book Suicide Squeeze, William Kashatus chronicles the experiences of Taylor Hooton and Rob Garibaldi, two promising high school baseball players who abused APEDs in the hopes of attracting professional scouts and Division I recruiters. However, as a result of their steroid abuse, they ended up taking their own lives. In Suicide Squeeze - named for the high-risk play in baseball to steal home - Kashatus identifies the symptoms and dangers of steroid use among teens. Using archival research and interviews with the Hooton and Garibaldi families, he explores the lives and deaths of these two young men, the impact of their suicides on MLB, and the ongoing fight against adolescent APED use by their parents. A passionate appeal to prevent additional senseless deaths by athletes, Suicide Squeeze is an important contribution to debates on youth and sports and on public policy. The book is published by Temple University Press. Critic Reviews: “A must-read for all parents and for everyone interested in the integrity of sports.” (Rob Manfred, Commissioner of Baseball) “Every young person who reads this book represents a life potentially saved.” (Randy Levine, president, New York Yankees, and board Member, Taylor Hooton Foundation)  “An outstanding book that should be read by anyone who has or will have a connection with young people who play sports. Suicide Squeeze reads like a novel and instructs like a textbook.” (Richard P. Borkowski, Sport and Recreation Safety Consultant) Resource Links: Learn more about William C. If so, this podcast interview with Lauryn Williams is for you! Lauryn is known as a gold and silver Olympic medalist, but like most powerful women that is only one dimension of her true self. Listen in to hear her story, why I was blown away by her keynote presentation, and how you can recognize and overcome stereotypical thinking about women of color and money. Lauryn Williams is a financial planner, author, podcaster, motivational speaker, and volunteer. But that's not why most people recognize her name. Over a period of twelve years, she competed at the elite level in two Olympic sports. Lauryn secured a spot on four US Olympic teams earning one gold and two silver medals. She is also the first American woman to earn medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. While the sports journey has been amazing, Lauryn always wanted to be prepared for a life off  the field of play. To prepare, she earned a BA and an MBA in Finance and Business while competing. After retiring, she was struck with a passion for empowering others with financial literacy and became a Certified Financial PlannerTM. Dear Mom and Dad, please don'trun out of money! Encore Episode This episode is one of the Top 9 Most Popular Breaking Money Silence® podcasts. If you want your mom and dad to live a long, healthy life but fear they may outlive their financial resources, you are not alone. Sixty-two percent of millennials and Gen Xers worry their parents haven't saved enough, yet over half find this money talk taboo. In this episode, I interview Blair Baldwin, founder of AgeUp about inter-generational money conversations and why his team decided to develop an innovative insurance product to address longevity risk (aka living into your 90s or 100s!).  Discover why talking to your parents about their finances can be so uncomfortable and how AgeUp might be able to help bridge the gap.  Blair Baldwin is the founder and general manager of AgeUp, a new financial product that fundamentally reimagines how annuities can both materially help the lives of middle class Americans and solve a looming financial crisis facing our country: how to close the gap between life expectancy and retirement savings. Blair and his team developed AgeUp as a new business unit inside Haven Life, MassMutual's in-house startup. Show Notes: Here are the resources that were mentioned during this podcast.
