What happens when international law exists on paper but not in practice? This week, Fredrik Gertten and Leilani Farha speak with Allegra Pacheco, an American human rights lawyer who has dedicated her career to protecting vulnerable Palestinian communities in the West Bank. As Chief of Party for the West Bank Protection Consortium, Allegra sees the realities of Area C in the West Bank, where over 600,000 Israeli settlers live in communities deemed illegal under international law while Palestinians face severe restrictions on movement, construction, and daily life.Together with Fredrik and Leilani, Allegra discusses what it will take to protect the occupied Palestinian territories. How might private security forces protect Palestinian communities? What leverage does the European Union actually possess? And why has the international community failed to enforce its own legal rulings? As the opportunity to protect a future for Palestine seems to dwindle, Allegra's perspective challenges us to think critically about what it will take to end one of the world's most protracted conflicts, and what it means to have hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.Support the show

In this episode, we get into the military transition of Tami Thacker, a former Navy corpsman whose journey epitomizes the essence of service and resilience. Her story is a profound exploration, from a tumultuous childhood to becoming a trailblazer in the armed forces. Tami's early years were marked by hardship and instability. Despite these challenges, she found her calling in the Navy, a decision that set her on a path of remarkable achievements and personal growth. Tami's spent 12 years in the Navy and got out in 2011 as a Senior Chief. Her naval career is a narrative of breaking barriers. She distinguished herself as the first female corpsman assigned to the Marine Corps Basic Reconnaissance Course, a role that tested her mettle and underscored her commitment to serving alongside the best. Her experiences in the Navy not only shaped her as a service member but also prepared her for the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life. This transition, a journey familiar to many veterans, was a period of adaptation and self-discovery, highlighting the critical need for veteran assistance and support in adjusting to life after the military. Today, Tami is the Veterans Services Coordinator at the University of California – Riverside. She is passionately involved in helping other veterans navigate their post-military lives. Her work focuses on providing guidance in career planning for veterans, advocating for mental health resources, and aiding in adjusting to civilian life. Today we talk with Charley Jordan about making the move from the military into farming. Charley is the owner/operator of Jordan Farms, in Indian Mound, Tennessee. After serving nearly 30 years in the Army, flying Chinook helicopters with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Charley retired in 2017 and found a new mission in agriculture and has devoted himself to helping other veterans and beginning farmers find their purpose in agriculture. Charley was also in the inaugural cohort of a horticulture therapy certificate program launched at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.Jordan Farms specializes in fresh-cut flowers, forest-grown mushrooms, and other farm-fresh products. Charley is a nationally featured advocate for veterans transitioning to agriculture and the mental health benefits of therapeutic horticulture. We think it would be great if we had more farmers in more communities; and at the same time, with over a million people in the active-duty military, when they decide to leave the military, veterans are an important demographic that could contribute to the numbers of farmers. In Shop Talk with Neversink Farm, we chat about new tools, old tools, how they can benefit your farm and tips to use them successfully with Conor Crickmore of Neversink Tools, which manufactures tools for farmers. In this episode of Shop Talk, we discuss soil blocks, what makes them such a good medium for seedlings, their difficulties, and the alternatives with the same benefits and fewer drawbacks, such as Winstrip trays and paper chain pots. Thanks to our collaborator on this podcast Neversink Farm. She is the author of “Beyond ‘Thank You For Your Service,' The Veteran Champion Handbook for Civilians" and has Masters degrees in Nursing and Political Science. Kathy was inspired to equip people who have never served in the military to become Veteran Champions when she noticed how different her life had been from most Americans and that citizens knew little about military culture. As an award-winning businesswoman and the Veteran Hiring Advisor for the Arizona Society of Human Resource Management, Kathy coaches employers on how to excel in hiring and retaining Veteran talent. A highly sought-after talent pool, less than 3% of Veterans are unemployed, while more than 30% are underemployed. No two veteran's stories are the same. But Torie Fisher's life is one that a lot of veterans can probably relate to. After a rough initial exit from the military, Torie re-enlisted, found a job she loved…only to again leave the military under less than ideal circumstances. She founded Backward Flag Brewing Company, but very soon found herself struggling as a new business owner, recent divorcee, newly married – gay – there were a lot of big changes all happening at once. It wasn't long before the temptation to end it all was one trigger squeeze away. Yet Torie dug deeper, quit drinking heavily, focused on her daughter and focused on helping those around her. Arms 2 Artisans, her nonprofit, became a way for her to continue to serve the military community, support her brothers and sisters in arms, and allow her to pave the way for transitioning veterans to become artists, creators, and artisans. Her selfless service extended to becoming a Mental Wellness Director at Recalibrate, pursuing advanced degrees in Psychology and even working as a Veteran Advocate in local law enforcement. I wasn't simply impressed by the strength and resilience Torie continues to show, juggling so many pursuits - all targeting the transitioning/separated veteran – but also by her honesty, her transparency, and her willingness to be an example for other veterans to find their path by helping others find theirs.

A man on a mission. That is this week's Team Never Quit guest, Marine veteran Brian Tally. What started out as sudden, severe back pain quickly became an incredible life-threatening ordeal he endured for years after a bad diagnosis at a VA hospital emergency room. His spine was being eaten alive by what turned out to be a tissue-eating staph infection. Because of a law enacted in 1946, Brian was unable to sue for malpractice as the law did not allow independent contractors at the VA facility to be sued. But by the time the VA suggested he pursue legal action in a state court, the state's statute of limitations had just expired. What to do? If you're Brian Tally - with no legal background - you draft your own legislative bill and go door-to-door on Capitol Hill until the procedural loophole is closed, ensuring that VA is transparent and fully accountable. https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/4526  In this episode you will hear: It was a cold, gloomy morning when I couldn't get out of bed, in severe pain – pain I can't describe - after feeling normal when I went to bed. I'm not anti-VA but I was one of those veterans that slipped through the cracks. The only time I ever saw a doctor was when I was laying open on an operating table four months later, and they found a surprise – my spine was oozing with inflammation. I was so doped up and in so much pain, I didn't even know what was going on. I spent four months in my chair. I became an absolute broken man. The doctor told my wife. “Your husband's spine looks like it's been moth-eaten.” I was being eaten alive for four straight months, before finally having life-saving surgery. By then my physical, mental, and emotional health was gone. I have never slandered anyone. I have only operated in an honorable way. I would never dishonorably yell someone's name. Because we all make mistakes. I had to operate in a different way than I was being treated. Just when I thought they would do the right thing, the VA did an about face, and they left me and my family holding the bag. My wife is the glue that holds everything together. There are tens of thousands of veterans, who have been destroyed by this egregious practice from a 1946 law. The VA is using more and more independent contractors to see their way out of malpractice cases. I went to my bathtub and I knelt down and said “God I'm about to expose made men, and I'm gonna need You for the strength and endurance to draft my own bill – my own solution. I was in a place I knew nothing about. The never quit mentality is what kept me going. I was representing 20.2 million American veterans with my bill. That's what God has led me to be and to do.  You can engage congress and make a difference. I know I'm where God wants me to be.
