133. How Should We be Judging Political Candidates?

Lawyer Up! Podcast

Today we discuss the tension between social justice and politics by examining whether voters expect too much honesty from politicians or tolerate too much dishonesty. When we hear that a candidate hasn't accurately presented his background, are we hearing a simple mistake as to the facts or an intentional misrepresentation? And if it was an intentional misrepresentation, what do we do about it? Balance that misrepresentation with the candidate's qualities? Reject him outright? How much of a misrepresentation is required before we reject a candidate?Maryland Governor Wes Moore claimed in 2006 to have received the Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan, when he actually received the less prestigious Army Commendation Medal. Other questions arose about how much combat time he had. Oddly, a Bronze Star was awarded in 2024, well after he resigned from the Army. Do these inconsistencies evidence a character flaw and lack of fitness for higher office, or should they be overlooked?U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner, who was very popular with those who saw him as a way to help counter President Trump, was able to attribute to PTSD his offensive social media posts and ignorance about a prominent tattoo being a Nazi symbol. Platner's story seemed to make sense until it didn't—when credible allegations about sexual assault hit the news. Now that Platner is out of the picture, the Democratic Party has to examine how virtue, or lack of it, should be balanced against electability, as well the risk that comes with inadequate vetting, and the notion that the “ends justify the means” politics.

What if greatness isn't about the rank you achieve... but the lives you leave behind? In 2004, Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Sheila Baxter became the first African American woman in the history of the Army Medical Service Corps to achieve the rank of Brigadier General. But that's not the story that stayed with me. The story that stayed with me was the young basketball player from Franklin, Virginia who simply loved serving people. The lieutenant whose commander challenged her to write a 20-year career plan. The officer who almost left the Army... ...and didn't. The leader who discovered that the higher you rise, the more humble you should become. And the retired general who could have spent retirement anywhere but instead chose to serve unhoused veterans, build affordable housing, and continue changing lives. In this conversation, we talk about:▪️ Why passion matters more than titles▪️ The mentors who changed the course of her life▪️ How to stay humble while leading at the highest levels▪️ What it really feels like to carry the weight of being "the first"▪️ Why she believes Army leadership prepares you for anything in life▪️ The importance of listening before making life-changing decisions▪️ The transition from commanding thousands of Soldiers to serving veterans on the streets of AtlantaOne quote I haven't stopped thinking about:"The higher you go, the more humble you should become."This isn't just an episode for Army leaders. It's for anyone trying to become a better leader, mentor, parent, teammate, or human being.I left this conversation inspired and I think you will too. Sheila R. Baxter is a native of Franklin, Virginia. She was born on 4 April 1955 to the proud parents of (late) John and Mary Baxter. She is one of five children and credits her parents for providing a loving home and family. In 1973, she graduated from Franklin High School. She completed her undergraduate education at Virginia State (now University) in 1977, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1978 after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corps, and she earned recognition as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Virginia State University. She holds a master's degree in health services management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia. In May 2024, Baxter completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from the ITC.Her doctoral qualitative research focused on creating access to services for women and men experiencing homelessness in Forest Park, Georgia.     Baxter's military experience began in 1978 as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps. Throughout her 30 year career, she enjoyed a variety of command and staff assignments including Chief of Staff, Medical Research and Materiel Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland; Logistics Officer for 1st Medical Group, Fort Hood, Texas; Commander, 226th Medical Logistics Battalion in Pirmasens, Germany; Commander, United States Medical Materiel Center, Europe; Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics for the Army Surgeon General and Commanding General, Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington.  In 2004, Baxter became the first African American woman to achieve the rank of Brigadier General in the Army Medical Service Corps. From 2004-2008, she served as Chief of the Medical Service Corps for approximately 9,000 active and Reserve Medical Corps officers. From 2005 to 2008, as Commanding General of Madigan Army Medical Center, she oversaw medical care for more than 40,000 Soldiers and 100,000 beneficiaries across Alaska, California, and Washington. She oversaw a $300 million budget. A screening and health assessment program for returning deployed Soldiers implemented at Madigan during her tenure became a model for the Army.      Brigadier General (Retired) Baxter is a Veteran of the first Gulf War (1990-1991) and has led thousands of Soldiers throughout her 30-year career.      Among her awards, decorations, and badges are the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with 4 (OLC), the Army Commendation Medal with 2 (OLC), the Army Achievement Medal with 2 (OLC), the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Staff Badge, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Expert Field Medical Badge.  She is a member of the Military Medical Merit. In July 2002, she received the Honorary Silver Award for excellence in community service from the Lord Mayor of Pirmasens, Germany. In the October 2005 issue of Newsweek magazine, she was recognized as one of the 20 Most Powerful Women in America. In 2009, she became a lifetime member of the National Scholars Honor Society, recognized for her outstanding academic achievements and personal excellence. Baxter's accomplishments as a leader have been highlighted in magazines such as Jet, Ebony, and Charisma. In 2015, she was chosen as one of Virginia's Strong Women in History by the Library of Virginia. From 2011 to 2021, Baxter served as a staff chaplain for unhoused Veterans at the Atlanta VA Healthcare System in Decatur, Georgia. In 2025, Baxter was honored with the Presidential Award for Community Service by President Joe Biden.     She actively serves as a committee member for the Trustee Board of the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia. She is an Executive Board member for the National Board for Occupational Therapists. She serves in ministry as a District Missionary, Living Word District COGIC, Forest Park, Georgia under the leadership of Superintendent, Dr. Kenneth Paden. This isn't left versus right—it's empire versus truth. From Iraq and Libya to Ukraine, Goyette argues modern power survives not by winning wars, but by erasing them—burying catastrophe beneath slogans and manufactured consensus. A former Armed Forces Radio anchor who once helped tell the official story, he now exposes the machinery behind it: a compliant press, a political class addicted to conflict, and a public conditioned to forget. What happens when the lies multiply… and belief finally collapses? GUEST: Charles Goyette is a veteran broadcaster, former Armed Forces Radio news anchor, and New York Times bestselling author of Empire of Lies: Fragments from the Memory Hole. A recipient of the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, Goyette spent years inside the media and military information apparatus before breaking ranks to expose what he calls the “engineered forgetting” that sustains modern empire. Blending investigative rigor with historical analysis, his work examines war propaganda, media complicity, and the psychology of power—arguing that today's global conflicts are sustained as much by narrative control as by military force. Around the time of his death she also felt a call to service, and while visiting a military base on a recruiting trip she was inspired to first serve her country in uniform in the United States Army. Alllison ended up earning an ROTC scholarship to college and joined active duty during the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars in 2004. She served two combat tours in Iraq, including a deployment during the surge, and achieved the rank of Captain. She served honorably and earned a Bronze Star Medal for service, and also earned an Army Commendation Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster before leaving active duty. She then continued her service on Capitol Hill, in the White House and in leadership roles in the nation's leading post-9/11 veterans advocacy organization. In her role as CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, she drove conversations about the issues that the nation's newest generation of war veterans care about, including the need to modernize the VA, put an end to the veteran suicide crisis, and for Congress to reclaim it's War Powers' authority. Now, Allison is running for Congress so that everyday North Carolinians have a voice they can count on in Congress to represent them in Washington. Mike Durant is a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 and Master Black Hawk pilot with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Night Stalkers). Inspired by his father, a First Sergeant in the Army National Guard, and a family friend's helicopter flight, Durant enlisted in 1979. After studying Spanish at the Defense Language Institute and serving as a voice intercept operator in Panama, he graduated from flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama, becoming a Warrant Officer in 1983. He flew over 150 medical evacuation missions in South Korea with the 377th Medical Evacuation Company and later served as an instructor pilot with the 101st Aviation Battalion. Joining the elite 160th SOAR in 1988, Durant flew in Operations Prime Chance, Just Cause, Desert Storm, and Restore Hope. It's essentially the opposite of artificial intelligence — the innate, deeply human abilities we're all born with but often lose touch with over time. U.S. Army Special Operations has been studying it, along with my guest, Angus Fletcher. He's a professor of story science at Ohio State's Project Narrative and was awarded the U.S. Army Commendation Medal in 2023 for his groundbreaking research into primal intelligence. In this fascinating conversation, Angus shares how we can reclaim and strengthen this natural gift to solve problems, adapt faster, and think more creatively. He's the author of Primal Intelligence: You Are Smarter Than You Know (https://amzn.to/3HvfeMi). Humans are wired to both compete and cooperate. While we evolved to survive in groups, we have our own self-interests and desires. So how do we strike the right balance between cooperation and competition? Jonathan Goodman, social scientist at the University of Cambridge, unpacks this age-old tension — revealing how it shapes our relationships, workplaces, and even our evolution. He's the author of Invisible Rivals: How We Evolved to Compete in a Cooperative World (https://amzn.to/45QBrh1), and his insights might change how you see human nature itself. The number of overweight pets in the U.S. continues to escalate. Well over half of the dogs and cats in this country are overweight or obese.
