This week, The Daily is revisiting some of our favorite episodes of the year and checking in on what has happened in the time since they first ran. With most natural disasters, the devastation is immediately apparent. The storm in February left their homes barely habitable, with collapsed ceilings and destroyed belongings, and it disrupted their children's learning. While the state investigated widespread blackouts from the storm, looking for accountability, the three women grappled with a more pressing question: How am I going to move forward with my life?Today, we return to their stories.Guest: Jack Healy, a Colorado-based national correspondent for The New York Times.Sign up here to get The Daily in your inbox each morning. If recent events have shown us anything, it's that Australian small businesses are resilient and have a fighting spirit in challenging times. Having the right online setup for your business shouldn't be daunting, it should be simple and accessible so that anyone can feel confident to set it up themselves. My guest Suzanne Mitchell is the Marketing Director for GoDaddy Australia and knows a lot about building online success for everyday entrepreneurs. I ask Suzanne about the essential tools and services all businesses need to build an online presence, attract customers and manage their work, and how small businesses have had to adapt and pivot during Covid19 to not only remain operational but transform and thrive. Join me for the career story reflections of Suzanne Mitchell, President of Zamar Screen Printing, Inc. Her dream is to be a stay at home mom, but that all changes when she and her husband decide to start their own printing company after the one, he was working for, burns to the ground and the owner decides not to rebuild. Tapping into her natural gatherer of people and leadership gifts she discovers an entrepreneurial spirit that fuels her and provides a flexible schedule to home school her two boys. She finds her way by doing, trying new things, leveraging resources and adjusting as she goes. While college was not for her, she’s huge on education – business coaches, seminars, finding resources when needed, and asking people she admires for help. Suzanne’s words of wisdom: “Ask for help when you’re struggling with something. It’s not a sign of weakness or failure, it’s learning. People want to help, so if you admire someone for any reason, ask them for their thoughts.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 28 January 2020 One of the main hurdles to starting any business these days is a website and the whole process of going online. We all know it has to happen but it can be long and onerous and expensive if you don’t have the time or expertise to do it yourself. It can also be daunting if you have no experience with digital marketing and a brand new idea where there are no examples to follow. But here to help is Suzanne Mitchell, the Marketing Director from GoDaddy who will give us some inside knowledge on navigating the maze of online marketing, discuss the changing patterns of behaviour of Australian small business online and share with us some interesting facts from their recent research into a growth sector in small businesses - the disgruntled employee... Welcome to the show Suzanne. Topics we’ll be covering: The website landscape is evolving, what has GoDaddy noticed about the changing patterns of behaviour in small business in Australia over the last 5 years? Are entrepreneurs still “buying up” multiple domains as a form of protecting their name and IP or are they using other marketing tools to own their name? In your opinion are small businesses better at positioning themselves online as the experts, or do we still have more to learn from corporates? What are your top tips to improve the functionality of a small business website and accessing your ideal clients? What about the tools available to improve digital marketing? Tell us about the recent white paper which explored the entrepreneurial spirit of Aussie workers & what does this mean for small businesses? One third of workers were interested in setting up their own businesses Is there a correlation between this and the likelihood of these workers becoming entrepreneurs? (there was a distinct shift towards a younger demographic) But 62% said it was too expensive to start a new business - why do you think this was? What can we do to support our employees’ who are dissatisfied? To find out more go to their website: https://au.godaddy.com/

In special bonus episode, I present a full hour's presentation of a panel discussion I recently chaired at the ECI Impact 2019 conference. The panel consisted of Steve Scarpino, Director, Ethics and Compliance at BP; Suzanne Mitchell, CCO at US Foods; and Karen Clapsaddle, Ethics Director Lockheed Martin. They were all involved in the design and creation of the ECI High Quality Program and had experience with the Framework Assessment. It was a great review of the HQP and discussion of not only the design of the Framework Assessment but how your company might use it going forward. Some of the highlights included:The five elements of the HQP;What are the Framework Assessment maturity curves; What level of optimization should companies aspire to'Can the Framework Assessment be used as internal measure; How much is the Framework Assessment quantitative v. qualitative driven?Does a company need to meet all the supporting objectives to be assessed as optimizing? How should you use and communicate maturity levels within your organization? Is backsliding possible? Is there a 'one-size-fits-all'?For additional resources: Check out the ECI website here. The Mantz and Mitchell radio partnership has evolved over the years just like the format of the show and the topics they cover. In March of 2007, they opened the microphone for the first time with a program on Tuesdays at noon called Give and Take with Gary Mantz. The show topics revolved around negotiations and conflict resolution, discussing how to get the best deals and how to work toward solutions in adversarial situations. Through a series of events, Gary co-hosted another show in that timeslot and looked for the opportunity to get his own show on the weekends. http://mantzandmitchell.com
